RESUMO

ABSTRACT Introduction: Tapering is a decisive phase in planning a young swimmer's preparation for competition. During this period, not only training loads, but also recovery, which includes sleep quality, must be constantly monitored. Objective: This study aims to investigate sleep behavior as a variable directly influenced by training load during the tapering phase of training for young swimmers. Methods: A polysomnography test was performed at the beginning of the tapering phase, as a baseline for sleep variables. In each daily training session, the overload and recovery variables were measured. The internal training load was evaluated in the PSE session and the external load by quantifying the training. The recovery variables were divided into the recovery variable, assessed using the TQR questionnaire, and sleep variables, which included sleepiness, scored using the Karolinska scale, and sleep behavior, using an actigraph and a sleep diary. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is no significant influence between training loads and sleep variables. However, a strong association was observed between TST and EL (External load), in the irregular sleep group. Level of evidence III, Study of behavior.

Cervical relaxation (CR) was performed in ewes during diestrus, to prospect a feasible protocol for non-surgical embryo transfer (NSET). In Trial 1, naturally mated ewes (n=13) received CR protocols with estradiol benzoate (EB, 1 mg on D6) and oxytocin (OT, 50 IU on D7) only (G-EB+OT) or associated with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG, 300 IU on D7, G-EB+OT+hCG) and were compared to non-hormonally treated (G-control) ewes. Estradiol concentration increased (P<0.05) from D6 to D7 in G-EB+OT and G-EB+OT+hCG, then decreased (P<0.05) on D8. The G-EB+OT had reduced (P<0.05) progesterone on D8, and 0% (0/5) pregnancy, while G-control had 100% (3/3) conception rate. The treatment with hCG mitigated the progesterone drop on D8 and resulted in 50% (2/4) conception rate. In Trial 2, cervical transposing success after treatment with EB, OT, and hCG on D6 and D7 was assessed in nulliparous (n=25) and multiparous (n=30) ewes. The EB+OT+hCG protocol allowed efficient cervical transposition (~78% of cervical transposition success into ~5 min) in nulliparous and multiparous females and did not alter total and blood perfusion areas of corpora lutea (CL). The use of EB+OT+hCG was efficient to ensure effective cervical transposing in nulliparous and multiparous ewes, with no apparent deleterious effect on CL function, and may contribute to animal welfare, allowing a less invasive NSET procedure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sleep quality is an essential component of athlete's recovery. However, a better understanding of the parameters to adequately quantify sleep quality in team sport athletes is clearly warranted. OBJECTIVE: To identify which parameters to use for sleep quality monitoring in team sport athletes. METHODS: Systematic searches for articles reporting the qualitative markers related to sleep in team sport athletes were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science online databases. The systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. For the meta-analysis, effect sizes with 95% CI were calculated and heterogeneity was assessed using a random-effects model. The coefficient of variation (CV) with 95% CI was also calculated to assess the level of instability of each parameter. RESULTS: In general, 30 measuring instruments were used for monitoring sleep quality. A meta-analysis was undertaken on 15 of these parameters. Four objective parameters inferred by actigraphy had significant results (sleep efficiency with small CV and sleep latency, wake episodes and total wake episode duration with large CV). Six subjective parameters obtained from questionnaires and scales also had meaningful results (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (sleep efficiency), Likert scale (Hooper), Likert scale (no reference), Liverpool Jet-Lag Questionnaire, Liverpool Jet-Lag Questionnaire (sleep rating) and RESTQ (sleep quality)). CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that sleep efficiency using actigraphy, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Likert scale, Liverpool Jet-Lag Questionnaire and RESTQ are indicated to monitor sleep quality in team sport athletes. RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate yield, fatty acid profile, physical, chemical and sensory composition of Minas fresh cheese made with milk from cows fed diets containing different sources of nitrogen compounds (soybean meal, urea, sunflower meal and detoxified castor bean meal). Eight F1 Holstein/Zebu cows with average production of 20 kg milk corrected to 3.5% fat day-1 were distributed in two 4 × 4 Latin squares, consisting of four treatments (diets), four animals and four experimental periods. Cheese was produced on the last day of each experimental period. The physical and chemical composition, yield and texture of cheese were similar between diets. The used diets influenced the concentration of fatty acid C11:0, which was higher for diets with soybean meal and sunflower meal; C18:2 C9-T11 (CLA) was higher for diets with urea, soybean meal and sunflower meal and C20:3 for diets with soybean meal and urea. For the other saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, differences were not detected. Different sources of nitrogen compounds in the diet for cows with average production of 20 kg milk corrected to 3.5% fat day-1 have no effect on the physical or chemical composition, yield, as well as acceptance of Minas fresh cheese. However, it can influence the fatty acid profile in the cheese fat.(AU)

The prevalence of people who are overweight or obese has increased dramatically in highincome countries over the past 20 years. There is a strong association between obesity and infertility, and weight loss can increase fecundity in obese women. Reproductive age women comprise the majority of bariatric patients, and many may be interested in conceiving after surgery. Bariatric surgery has been shown to improve menstrual cyclicity in anovulatory women. Moreover, the increased risk of miscarriage in obese women may decline after bariatric surgery. However, little is published on the impact of surgical weight loss on spontaneous or in vitro fertilization (IVF)treatmentrelated pregnancy rates. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the recent literature on bariatric surgery and fertility to help on patient counseling.(AU)

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The surgeon's formation process has changed in recent decades. The increase in medical schools, new specialties and modern technologies induce an overhaul of medical education. Medical residency in surgery has established itself as a key step in the formation of the surgeon, and represents the ideal and natural way for teaching laparoscopy. However, the introduction of laparoscopic surgery in the medical residency programs in surgical specialties is insufficient, creating the need for additional training after its termination. OBJECTIVE: To review the surgical teaching ways used in services that published their results. METHODS: Survey of relevant publications in books, internet and databases in PubMed, Lilacs and Scielo through july 2014 using the headings: laparoscopy; simulation; education, medical; learning; internship and residency. RESULTS: The training method for medical residency in surgery focused on surgical procedures in patients under supervision, has proven successful in the era of open surgery. However, conceptually turns as a process of experimentation in humans. Psychomotor learning must not be developed directly to the patient. Training in laparoscopic surgery requires the acquisition of psychomotor skills through training conducted initially with surgical simulation. Platforms based teaching problem solving as the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery, developed by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery and the Laparoscopic Surgical Skills proposed by the European Society of Endoscopic Surgery has been widely used both for education and for the accreditation of surgeons worldwide. CONCLUSION: The establishment of a more appropriate pedagogical process for teaching laparoscopic surgery in the medical residency programs is mandatory in order to give a solid surgical education and to determine a structured and safe professional activity.

Physical exercises can result in tissue damage on the muscular system, including during the preseason, which is a period of physical training aiming subsequent competitions. The aim of this study was to analyze the behavior of plasma CK as a marker of muscle damage during preseason of a professional soccer team; determine when preseason CK levels reach their peak value; and verify CK concentration on preceding moment to the first official match of the season. Professional soccer players (n = 31) attended this study (24.3 ± 3.9 years, 181.0 ± 7.0 cm, 9.1 ± 1.3%GC and 66.0 ± 4.5 mLO2/kg/min). The plasma concentration of CK was determined at the beginning of the preseason (M1), 4 (M2), 10 (M3) and 15 (M4) days after. We identified CK values of 178.2 ± 12.0, 540.0 ± 59.1, 389.8 ± 49.5, 408.7 ± 45.0 U/L for M1, M2, M3 and M4 respectively. The peak concentration of CK occurred on M2 (p<0.05). The analysis of the behavior of plasma CK revealed increased levels throughout the preseason of a professional soccer team compared to the holiday period. The peak value of CK was reached on the 4th day of preseason. The concentration of CK on the day prior to the first official match of the season proved to be in the range of values recommended for professional players.

The objective of this study has been to evaluate the essential oil production of Melissa officinalis L. with irrigation blade in the North of Minas Gerais as a measure of water rational use. The experimental design has been completely randomized in subdivided plots in the time with six treatments, defined by irrigation blade (T1=0,50xET0; T2=0,75xET0; T3=1,0xET0; T4=1,25xET0; T5=1,5xET0 e T6=1,75 x ETO), and four replications. The study has been conducted at the micro lysimeter. Based on regression analysis, it has been observed that the fitomass production and growth was influenced by water availability. The production and content of the essential oil are inversely proportional to the increase in the irrigation blade. The production of biomass has been obtained from the smaller blade and the evaluation times did not influenciate on their blades.

RESUMO

Mucositis affects about 40 % of patients undergoing chemotherapy. Short chain fatty acids (SCFA), mainly butyrate, are claimed to improve mucosal integrity, reduce intestinal permeability and act as anti-inflammatory agents for the colon mucosa. We evaluated the effects of oral administration of SCFA or butyrate in the 5FU-induced mucositis. Mice received water, SCFA or butyrate during all experiment (10 days) and a single dose of 5FU (200 mg/kg) 3 days before euthanasia. We evaluated inflammatory and histological score by morphometry, and by activity of enzymes specific to neutrophil, eosinophil and macrophage and TLR-4, TNF-alpha and IL6 expressions. Intestinal permeability and tight junction protein ZO-1 expression were evaluated. Mice from the 5FU (5-Fluorouracil) group presented weight loss, ulcerations and inflammatory infiltration of neutrophils and eosinophils, increased expression of IL6 and TNF-alpha and increased intestinal permeability. SCFA minimized intestinal damage, reduced ulcerations without affecting intestinal permeability. Butyrate alone was more efficient at improving those parameters than in SCFA solution and also reduced intestinal permeability. The expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and ZO-1 tended to be higher in the SCFA supplemented but not in the butyrate supplemented group. We showed the beneficial effects of butyrate on intestinal mucositis and its promising function as an adjuvant in the treatment of diseases not only of the colon, but also of the small intestine.

RESUMO

The purpose of the present study was to assess the bond strength of composite resin repairs subjected to different surface treatments and accelerated artificial aging. 192 cylindrical samples (CSs) were prepared and divided into 24 groups (n = 8). Half of the CSs were stored in water for 24 h, and the other half were subjected to C-UV accelerated aging for non-metallic specimens. The treatments were phosphoric acid + silane + adhesive (PSA); phosphoric acid + adhesive (PA); diamond bur + phosphoric acid + silane + adhesive (DPSA); diamond bur + phosphoric acid + adhesive (DPA); air abrasion + phosphoric acid + silane + adhesive (APSA); and air abrasion + phosphoric acid + adhesive (APA). The repair was performed and the specimens were again aged as described above. A control group (n = 8) was established and did not receive any type of aging or surface treatment. The specimens were loaded to failure in shear mode with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until fracture. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found among DPSA, DPA, APSA, APA, and the control group. The aged PSA and PA achieved low bonding values and were statistically different from the control group, whereas the non-aged PSA and PA presented no statistically significant difference from the control group. Repairs with the proposed surface treatments were viable on both recent and aged restorations; however, phosphoric acid + adhesive alone were effective only on recent restorations.

Serum creatine kinase (CK) concentration has been widely used as an indicator of skeletal muscle damage in sports. However, there are no studies on post-game CK kinetics in soccer during a competitive season. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum CK kinetics in professional soccer players at different post-game times during a competitive season without training interruption. Seventeen professional soccer players (age: 22.2±3.1 years, height: 179±6.0 cm, body fat percentage: 9.5±1.1, and 67.0±3.5 mL O2/kg/min) were evaluated over a period of 3 months of the national championship. Serum CK concentration was measured before the beginning of the season (baseline) and at four different times after a soccer game(post-1: 12-20 h, post-2: 36-48 h, post-3: 60-65 h, and post-4: 90-110 h). Plasma CK concentrations were higher at all times when compared to baseline (p<0.05). Post-2 CK concentration was lower than post-1 and higher than post-3 and -4 (p<0.05), with no significant differences between post-3 and post-4. In conclusion, serum CK kinetics was influenced by the training routine of the soccer players, witha peak between 12 and 20 h after the game, returning to normal within 60 65 h. This procedure can be used to monitor the recovery state of athletes and game and training intensities.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether luteal phase endometrial transcriptome is altered in obese women during the window of implantation (WOI), considering the presence of infertility, fat distribution and association with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: University-affiliated infertility clinic, between May 2007 and March 2009. PATIENT(S): One control group of women with normal weight (n=4), and four study groups of obese women (n=6 each one) according to the association with infertility, PCOS, and ovarian stimulation. INTERVENTION(S): The endometrium was biopsied 7 days after LH surge or hCG administration in 28 women. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Endometrial gene expression during the WOI. RESULT(S): One hundred and fifty-one genes were dysregulated in obese groups compared with controls. This dysregulation was more pronounced when infertility was associated. The biologic processes of these genes belonged mainly to development and regulation of different biological functions such as transcription and biosynthesis. The molecular functions overrepresented were transcription and peptide receptor activity. The endometrium of obese women with PCOS showed dysregulated genes related to biologic processes such as development, morphogenesis, and the immune system, as well as different molecular functions such as protein binding, binding, growth factor activity, and carboxylic acid transmembrane transporter activity. Some of these genes have been previously related to implantation and unexplained infertility. CONCLUSION(S): Obese women present a different endometrial gene expression than controls during the WOI, which is more pronounced when infertility or polycystic ovary syndrome are associated.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ovarian stimulation regimens for in vitro fertilization seem to have a deleterious effect on oocyte quality and embryo aneuploidy in a dose-dependent manner. This study aims to test the influence of gonadotrophin doses on embryo aneuploidy rates. METHODS: A total of 32 young oocyte donors with a high response to ovarian stimulation, were included in the study. Two subsequent stimulation treatments were performed in each donor: first, a standard dose cycle using a 225 IU starting dose of recombinant FSH (r-FSH) and secondly, a reduced dose cycle with a starting dose of 150 IU r-FSH. In both cycles, GnRH agonist co-treatment was used for down-regulation. Ovarian response, embryo development and aneuploidy for chromosomes 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, X and Y were the main outcomes of the study. RESULTS: A total of 22 donors completed both treatments with different gonadotrophin doses. In the remaining 10 donors, the reduced dose cycle was cancelled due to low ovarian response. In those donors who completed both regimens, significant increases in rates of fertilization and chromosomally normal blastocysts were observed in the reduced dose cycle. No differences were observed in pregnancy and implantation rates in recipients who received oocytes from standard and reduced doses cycles. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the limited numbers in our study, we can conclude that in high responder donors, a decrease in the gonadotrophin dose could improve fertilization rates and embryo quality. However, due to the reduced oocyte numbers with lower doses, a similar reproductive outcome in terms of live births would be expected.
