RESUMO

Since the late 2000s, cities have emerged as the primary human habitat across the globe, and this trend is anticipated to continue strengthening in the coming decades. As we increasingly inhabit human-designed urban spaces, it becomes crucial to understanding better how these environments influence human behavior and how individuals perceive the city. In this chapter, we begin by examining the interplay between urban form and social behavior, highlighting key indicators of urban morphology, and presenting state-of-the-art methodologies for data collection. Subsequently, we harness the computational capability of foundation models, the latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) generation, to simulate interactions between individuals and urban built environments in a diverse group of 21 cities across the globe. Through this exploration, we scrutinize the models' capacity to encapsulate the intricate complexities of how individuals behave and perceive cities. These examples demonstrate the potential of advanced AI systems to assist urban scientists in understanding cities, emphasizing the necessity for a meticulous evaluation of their capabilities and limitations for the optimal application of Generative AI in urban research and policymaking.

The cleavage of the C-N bonds of aromatic heterocycles, such as pyridines or quinolines, is a crucial step in the hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) industrial processes of fuels in order to minimize the emission of nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Due to the harsh conditions under which these reactions take place (high temperature and H2 pressure), the mechanism by which they occur is only partially understood, and any study at the molecular level that reveals new mechanistic possibilities in this area is of great interest. Herein, we unravel the pyridine ring-opening mechanism of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ligands coordinated to the cis-{Re(CO)2(N-RIm)(PMe3)} (N-RIm= N-alkylimidazole) fragment under mild conditions. Computational calculations show that deprotonation of the pyridine ring, once dearomatized, is crucial to induce ring contraction, triggering extrusion of the nitrogen atom from the ring and cleavage of the C-N bond. It is noteworthy that different products (regioisomers) are obtained depending on whether the ligand used is bipy or phen due to the additional rigidity and stability conferred by the central ring of the phen ligand, an issue also addressed and clarified computationally. Strong support for the proposed mechanism is provided by the characterization and isolation, including three single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures, of several of the proposed reaction intermediates.

INTRODUCTION: Controversy exists in the literature about the best treatment for type III acromioclavicular dislocations. The aim of this study is to compare functional results between surgical and conservative treatment in type III acromioclavicular joint dislocations. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We retrospectively evaluated the records of 30 patients from our area with acute type III acromioclavicular dislocations that were treated from January 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2020. Fifteen patients were treated surgically and 15 conservatively. Follow-up mean time was 37.93 months in operative group and 35.73 months in non-operative group. Results obtained on the Constant score was the main variable analysed and results obtained on the Oxford score and the Visual Analogue Scale for pain were the secondary variables. Epidemiological variables were analysed, as well as range of mobility in injured shoulder and subjective and radiological variables (distance between the superior border of the acromion and the superior border of the clavicle's distal end and presence of osteoarthritis in the acromioclavicular joint). RESULTS: Functional evaluation scores did not show differences between the two groups (Constant: operative 82/non-operative 86.38, p 0.412; Oxford: operative 42/non-operative 44.80, p 0.126) nor did Visual Analogue Scale (operative 1/non-operative 0.20, p 0.345). Subjective evaluation of the injured shoulder was excellent or good in 80% of the patients in both groups. Measurement of the distance between the superior border of the acromion and the superior border of the clavicle's distal end were significantly higher in non-operative group (operative 8.95/non-operative 14.21, p 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Although radiographic results were better in the surgical treatment group, functional evaluation scores did not show significant differences between the two groups. These results do not support the routine use of surgical treatment for grade III acromioclavicular dislocations.

The O(3P) + D2 → OD(2Π) + D reaction presents the peculiarity of taking place on two different potential energy surfaces (PESs) of different symmetry, 3A' and 3A'', which become degenerate for collinear configurations where the saddle-point of the reaction is located. The degeneracy is broken for non-collinear approaches with the energy on the 3A' PES rising more abruptly with the bending angle, making the frequency of this mode higher on the 3A' state. Consequently, the 3A' PES should be less reactive than the 3A'' one. Nevertheless, quantum scattering calculations show that the cross section is higher on the 3A' PES for energies close to the classical reaction threshold and rotationless reactant. It is found that the differences between the reactivity on the two PESs are greater for low values of total angular momentum, where the centrifugal barrier is lower and contribute to the higher population of the Π(A') Λ-doublet states of OD at low collision energies. At high collision energies, the Π(A') Λ-doublet state is also preferentially populated. Analysis of the differential cross sections reveals that the preponderance for the Π(A') Λ-doublet at low energies comes from backward scattering, originating from the reaction on the 3A' PES, while at high energies, it proceeds from a different mechanism that leads to sideways scattering on the 3A'' PES and that populates the Π(A') manifold.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to analyse the indications, complications, survivorship and clinical/functional outcome of metaphyseal sleeves as a treatment option in revision total knee arthroplasty. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A systematic review was made following the PRISMA recommendations on the use of metaphyseal sleeves for revision total knee arthroplasty. We included prospective and retrospective studies published in the last 10 years looking at implant survivorship, clinical and functional outcome with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. RESULTS: The included studies showed good both functional and clinical outcomes. The overall reoperation rate was 16.2%, with an overall survival rate of 92.2% and aseptic survivorship of 98.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Metaphyseal sleeves are a good treatment option for this surgery, especially in AORI II or III type bone defects, achieving good intraoperative and primary stability of the implant, with good and rapid osseointegration.

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in the fish gastrointestinal tract has been documented in several studies. However, it is unclear whether this ingestion is active or passive and whether it affects feeding activity in natural environments. In this study, three sites with different anthropogenic pressure were selected from the Bahia Blanca estuary, Argentina, and the small zooplanktivorous pelagic fish Ramnogaster arcuata was used to evaluate MP ingestion and its effect on specie's trophic activity. We analyzed the zooplanktonic composition, levels, and types of MPs in both the environment and the stomach contents of R. arcuata. Moreover, we assessed the trophic behavior of R. arcuata to determine electivity, stomach fullness, and vacuity indexes. The results showed that despite the availability of prey in the environment, 100 % of the specimens ingested MPs, and their levels and characteristics were different according to the site. Stomach contents at sites related to harbor activities presented the lowest MPs concentrations, most of them were paint fragments, with the smallest sizes and a low diversity of colors. The highest MP ingestions were found near the principal sewage discharge, being mostly microfibers, followed by microbeads, and with a greater variety of colors. Electivity indices showed that R. arcuata has a passive or active ingestion according to the size and shape of MPs. In addition, the lowest stomach fullness index and the highest vacuity index values were associated with the highest level of MP ingestion near the sewage discharge. Altogether, these results demonstrate a negative effect of MPs in the feeding activity of R. arcuata and help to elucidate some mechanisms by which these particles are ingested by a bioindicator fish used in South America.

This study explores the effect of different wind events (direction and duration) on the surf zone zooplankton community in a temperate sandy beach. Samplings were realized on the surf zone of Pehuen Co sandy beach during 17 wind events from May 17th, 2017, to July 19th, 2019. Biological samples were taken before and after the events. The identification of the events was realized using recorded high-frequency wind speed data. General Linear Model (LM) and Generalized linear models (GLM) were employed to compare physical and biological variables. We observed that the wind direction unequally altered the ecosystem along with its duration, modifying the composition and abundance of zooplankton communities. Short-duration wind events were associated with an increment in the zooplankton abundances, being Acartia tonsa and Paracalanus parvus dominant. Within the short-duration cases, winds from the W sector were identified with the inner continental shelf species' presence, such as Ctenocalanus vanus and Euterpina acutifrons, and to a lesser extent, Calanoides carinatus, and Labidocera fluviatilis, together with surf zone copepods. Long-duration cases were associated with a significant decrease in the zooplankton abundance. Within this group, SE-SW wind events were identified with adventitious fraction taxa. Considering that the occurrence of extreme events is growing because of climate change, affecting the frequency and intensity of storm surges, the knowledge of the responses of biological communities to these events is necessary. This work provides quantitative evidence on a short-time scale of the implications of the physical-biological interaction during different strong wind cases in surf zone waters of sandy beaches.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The gold standard of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) treatment is the section of the transverse carpal ligament, the most common technique being the palmar cutaneous incision. Percutaneous techniques have been developed, although their risk/benefit ratio remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the functional outcome of patients undergoing CTS percutaneously ultrasound-guided and compare it with those of open surgery. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Prospective observational cohort study of 50 patients undergoing CTS (25 percutaneous with WALANT technique and 25 by open surgery with local anaesthesia and tourniquet). Open surgery was performed using a short palmar incision. The percutaneous technique was performed anterograde using the Kemis H3® scalpel (Newclip). A preoperative and postoperative assessment was performed at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months. Demographic data, presence of complications, grip strength and Levine test score (BCTQ) were collected. RESULTS: The sample consists of 14 men and 36 women with a mean age of 51.4 years (95% CI: 48.4-54.5). Percutaneous technique was performed anterograde using the Kemis H3® scalpel (Newclip). All patients improved from their CTS clinic without obtaining statistically significant differences in BCTQ score, nor in the presence of complications (p>0.05). Patients operated on percutaneously recovered faster grip strength at 6 weeks, but it was similar in the final review. CONCLUSIONS: In view of the results obtained, percutaneous ultrasound-guided surgery is a good alternative for the surgical treatment of CTS. Logically, this technique requires its learning curve and familiarisation with the ultrasound visualisation of the anatomical structures to be treated.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate p16, p53, EGFR, pEGFR protein expression and HPV infection as possible markers of tumor progression in a series of sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) and sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC). METHODS: A series of 49 SNIP, 11 SNSCC associated with SNIP (SNIP-SNSCC) and 52 SNSCC not associated with SNIP were analyzed for p16, p53, EGFR, and phosphorylated EGFR (pEGFR) expression by immunohistochemistry. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection status was evaluated by DNA-PCR. Results were correlated to clinical and follow-up data. RESULTS: Reduced or loss of p16 expression was observed in 18% SNIP, 64% SNIP-SNSCC and 87% of SNSCC. Reduced or loss p16 staining in SNIP correlated with shorter recurrent SNIP-free follow-up. In contrast, p16 expression was not predictive of recurrent SNSCC in cases with SNIP-SNSCC and SNSCC. P53, EGFR, and pEGFR expression did not differ between the tumor groups, nor were they related to recurrent SNIP-free follow-up or recurrent SNSCC. Oncogenic HPV types 16 and 18 were detected in 5% of SNIP and 18% of SNIP-SNSCC, but not in SNSCC. There was no correlation between HPV infection and >70% p16 immunostaining. CONCLUSIONS: HPV infection appears to play a minor role in SNIP and SNSCC and p16 immunostaining does not appear a valid surrogate marker for HPV. However, reduced or loss p16 expression may have prognostic value as a risk marker for recurrent SNIP.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of this study was to conduct an epidemiological study of hand fractures in adult population. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective observational study in a population of 470,000 habitants was performed. Over the course of three years, all patients over 16 years of age who were diagnosed with fracture or fracture-dislocation at the level of a carpal bone, metacarpal and/or phalange were included. These fractures were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases 10th edition (ICD-10). Incidence rates, along with gender and age distribution were also studied. RESULTS 1,267 patients with a total of 1,341 hand fractures were included. They represented 29.7% of all upper limb fractures and 7.6% of all traumatological emergencies involving a bone fracture during that period. The most frequent ICD-10 group was S62.3, with the fifth metacarpal as the most often affected bone (39.7%). The most frequent location at the level of the phalanges (S62.5) was the proximal third of the proximal phalanx of the fifth radius. The global incidence rate was 99 fractures per 100,000 persons/year. No seasonal variation was observed. Only 10.2% of hand fractures received surgical treatment. DISCUSSION Several epidemiological studies have been published on fractures in the hand, but none have used the ICD-10 classification. Although the distribution of our stratified sample by age and gender was similar to those previously published, the incidence rate in our study was much lower. We may possibly extrapolate our results to the rest of the Spanish population and even to the rest of the population of southern Europe, given the scarcity of epidemiological studies on this matter in these geographical areas. CONCLUSIONS The ICD-10 classification is useful for the description and classification of hand fractures. The most often affected group is that including metacarpals of the long fingers (S62.3), being the distal level of the fifth metacarpal in young male patients the most frequent one. Most fractures are treated conservatively and in case of surgical treatment, the preferred surgical techniques include K-wire fixation, interfragmentary compression screws and plate osteosynthesis. We described clinical characteristics and outcome of 160 patients over 65 years (01 September to 31 August 2021) who had a first positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR- test more than 14 days after full vaccination and were hospitalized with COVID-19. Median age of included patients was 84 years, 61.2% were over 80 years; 50.6% were male and most (82.5%) has at least one comorbidity. Up to 84% received specific treatment against COVID-19, including 76.9% low-flow oxygen therapy. We found that overall mortality was 25.6% and 30.6% in those older than 80 years. A higher mortality was significantly associated with older age and treatment with tocilizumab. Our data showed that although COVID-19 vaccines continue protecting elderly patients against hospitalization and death and might improve the prognosis after hospitalization in patients with breakthrough infections, mortality in this population -especially in those older than 80 years- remains very high.

INTRODUCTION: The fifth metacarpal neck fracture is traditionally treated with closed reduction and intrinsic plus cast immobilization. Another alternative and more functional treatment is the syndactylia. The aim of our study is to compare both treatments searching for any differences in their functional outcomes. METHOD: We did a prospective, controlled, masked, randomized cohort study with patients over 18 years old attended from May 2019 to May 2020 in Vigo's Sanitary Area with this injure and an angle below 40°. The collected data was: sex, age, fracture angle, range of motion of the metacarpophalangeal articulation (MCFA), grip strength, pain, fracture consolidation, Quick DASH and comfort 4 and 6 weeks after the injury. RESULTS: 39 men and 1 woman were included in the sample. 36.1 years old as the age average. 90% of the injuries affected the right hand, being all the patients right-handed, finding statistically significant differences in MCFA flexion within 4 weeks and in grade of discomfort, both in favour of the syndactylia (p<0.05). Any of the other collected data was statistically significant. Every fracture achieved consolidation at the end of the follow-up. CONCLUSION: Following the results, we consider both immobilizations good treatment options of these fractures; nevertheless, syndactylia has proven an earlier MCFA flexion recovery and a better tolerance.

The worldwide spread of the SARS-CoV-2 caused an unprecedented lockdown measures in most countries with consequences on the world society, economy, and sanitary systems. This situation provided an opportunity to identify the effects of human confinement on natural environments, like touristic sandy beaches, which are stressed due to anthropogenic pressures. Based on previous articles about heavy metals sources and levels in these ecosystems, this paper discusses the dynamic of these pollutants and a regulatory scenario associated with COVID-19 sanitation policies. The main findings suggest that 39% of the studies were on Asian sandy beaches, 16% from Europe, while America and Africa with 23% each. Also Co, Cd, Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, Ni, Fe and Mn were the most frequently analyzed metals in sediments and in several cases their concentrations exceed international guidelines assessment. Finally, even though beaches are under several metals inputs, tourism plays a key role in these ecosystems quality. After analyzing the potential indirect effect of COVID-19 measures on metals dynamics, we propose some key recommendations and management strategies to mitigate heavy metal pollution on sandy tourist beaches. These proposals are useful for decision-makers and stakeholders to improve sandy beach management, mainly those beaches not addressed from a management perspective; and their implementation should be adapted according to the regulations and legislation of each country.

New Re(I) carbonyl complexes are proposed as candidates for photodynamic therapy after investigating the effects of the pyridocarbazole-type ligand conjugation, addition of substituents to this ligand, and replacement of one CO by phosphines in [Re(pyridocarbazole)(CO)3(pyridine)] complexes by means of the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT. We have found, first, that increasing the conjugation in the bidentate ligand reduces the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gap of the complex, so its absorption wavelength red-shifts. When the enlargement of this ligand is carried out by merging the electron-withdrawing 1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione heterocycle, it enhances even more the stabilization of the LUMO due to its electron-acceptor character. Second, the analysis of the shape and composition of the orbitals involved in the band of interest indicates which substituents of the bidentate ligand and which positions are optimal for reducing the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. The introduction of electron-withdrawing substituents into the pyridine ring of the pyridocarbazole ligand mainly stabilizes the LUMO, whereas the HOMO energy increases primarily when electron-donating substituents are introduced into its indole moiety. Each type of substituents results in a bathochromic shift of the lowest-lying absorption band, which is even larger if they are combined in the same complex. Finally, the removal of the π-backbonding interaction between Re and the CO trans to the monodentate pyridine when it is replaced by phosphines PMe3, 1,4-diacetyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (DAPTA), and 1,4,7-triaza-9-phosphatricyclo[5.3.2.1]tridecane (CAP) causes another extra bathochromic shift due to the destabilization of the HOMO, which is low with DAPTA, moderate with PMe3, but especially large with CAP. Through the combination of the PMe3 or CAP ligands with adequate electron-withdrawing and/or electron-donating substituents at the pyridocarbazole ligand, we have found several complexes with significant absorption at the therapeutic window. In addition, according to our results on the singlet-triplet energy gap, all of them should be able to produce cytotoxic singlet oxygen.
