This experiment aimed to evaluate the beneficial and toxic properties of synthetic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on the liver of normal and high-fat diet (HFD) fed-rats. The ZnO NPs were synthesized and, its characterizations were determined by different techniques. Effect of ZnO NP on cell viability, liver enzymes and lipid accumulation were measured in HepG2 cells after 24 h. After that, rats orally received various dosages of ZnO NPs for period of 4 weeks. Toxicity tests were done to determine the appropriate dose. In the subsequent step, the hepatoprotective effects of 5 mg/kg ZnO NPs were determined in HFD-fed rats (experiment 2). The oxidative stress, NLRP3 inflammasome, inflammatory, and apoptosis pathways were measured. Additionally, the activity of caspase 3, nitric oxide levels, antioxidant capacity, and various biochemical factors were measured. Morphological changes in the rat livers were also evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin (H & E) and Masson trichrome. Liver apoptosis rate was also approved by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Treatment of animals with 5 mg/ZnO NPs revealed potential hepatoprotective properties, while ZnO NPs at the doses of above 10 mg/kg showed toxic effects. Antioxidant enzyme gene expression and activity were significantly augmented, while apoptosis, NLRP3 inflammasome, and inflammation pathways were significantly reduced by 5 mg/kg ZnO NPs. Liver histopathological alterations were restored by 5 mg/kg ZnO NPs in HFD. Our study highlights the hepatoprotective effects of ZnO NPs against the HFD-induced liver damage, involving antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic pathways, indicating their promising therapeutic potential.

Aging is a time-dependent progressive physiological process, which results in impaired immune system function. Age-related changes in immune function increase the susceptibility to many diseases such as infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Different metabolic pathways including glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, amino acid metabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, fatty acid oxidation and fatty acid synthesis regulate the development, differentiation, and response of adaptive and innate immune cells. During aging all these pathways change in the immune cells. In addition to the changes in metabolic pathways, the function and structure of mitochondria also have changed in the immune cells. Thereby, we will review changes in the metabolism of different innate immune cells during the aging process.

The Monkeypox virus, an Orthopoxvirus with zoonotic origins, has been responsible for a growing number of human infections reminiscent of smallpox since May 2022, as reported by the World Health Organization. As of now, there are no established medical treatments for managing Monkeypox infections. In this study, we used machine learning to select conserved epitopes. Proteins were determined using Reverse Vaccinology and Gene Ontology subcellular localization, and their epitopes were predicted. NextClade was used to calculate the number of mutations in each amino acid position using 2433 Monkeypox sequences. The Unsupervised Nearest Neighbor machine learning algorithm and ideal matrix [0 0] were used to calculate the conservancy score of epitopes. Six proteins were determined for epitope prediction. Finally, 47 MHC-I epitopes, 5 MHC-II epitopes, and 10 Linear B cell epitopes were discovered. Our method can select epitopes for vaccine design to prevent viruses with accelerated evolution and high mutation rate.

BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure poses a significant threat to reproductive health, particularly the male reproductive system. The testes, being highly sensitive to radiation, are susceptible to damage that can impair fertility and overall reproductive function. The study aims to investigate the radioprotective effects of apigenin on the testis through histopathological evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research involved utilizing a total of 40 mice, which were randomly divided into eight groups of five mice each. The groups were categorized as follows: A) negative control group, B, C, and D) administration of apigenin at three different doses (0.3 mg/kg, 0.6 mg/kg, and 1.2 mg/kg) respectively, E) irradiation group, and F, H, and I) administration of apigenin at three different doses (0.3 mg/kg, 0.6 mg/kg, and 1.2 mg/kg) in combination with irradiation. The irradiation procedure involved exposing the mice to a 2Gy X-ray throughout their entire bodies. Subsequently, histopathological assessments were conducted seven days after the irradiation process. RESULTS: The findings indicated that radiation exposure significantly impacted the spermatogenesis system. This research provides evidence that administering apigenin to mice before ionizing radiation effectively mitigated the harmful effects on the testes. Apigenin demonstrated radioprotective properties, positively influencing various parameters, including the spermatogenesis process and the presence of inflammatory cells within the tubular spaces. CONCLUSION: Apigenin can provide effective protection for spermatogenesis, minimize the adverse effects of ionizing radiation, and safeguard normal tissues.

RouteNav is an iOS app designed to support wayfinding for blind travelers in an indoor/outdoor transit hub. It doesn't rely on external infrastructure (such as BLE beacons); instead, localization is obtained by fusing spatial information from inertial dead reckoning and GPS (when available) via particle filtering. Routes are expressed as sequences of "tiles", where each tile may contain relevant points of interest. Redundant modalities are used to guide users to switching goalposts within tiles. In this paper, we describe the different components of RouteNav, and report on a user study with seven blind participants, who traversed three challenging routes in a transit hub while receiving input from the app.

AIM: This study investigated the protective effects of three antioxidants on radiationinduced lung injury. BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is one of the key outcomes of radiotherapy in normal tissues. It can induce severe injuries in lung tissue, which may lead to pneumonitis and fibrosis. Recently, interest in natural chemicals as possible radioprotectors has increased due to their reduced toxicity, cheaper price, and other advantages. OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the radioprotective effect of Alpha-lipoic Acid (LA), Resveratrol (RVT), and Apigenin (APG) against histopathological changes and oxidative damage and survival induced by ionizing radiation (IR) in the lung tissues of rats. METHODS: First, the lung tissue of 50 mature male Wistar rats underwent an 18 Gy gamma irradiation. Next, the rats were sacrificed and transverse sections were obtained from the lung tissues and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) and Mason trichrome (MTC) for histopathological evaluation. Then, the activity of Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), and Malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured by an ELISA reader at 340, 405, and 550 nm. RESULTS: Based on the results of this study, IR led to a remarkable increase in morphological changes in the lung. However, APG, RVT, and LA could ameliorate the deleterious effects of IR in lung tissue. IR causes an increase in GPX level, and APG+IR administration causes a decrease in the level of GPX compared to the control group. Also, the results of this study showed that RVT has significant effects in reducing MDA levels in the short term. In addition, compared to the control group, IR and RVT+IR decrease the activity of SOD in the long term in the lung tissues of rats. Also, the analysis of results showed that weight changes in IR, LA+IR, APG+IR, and control groups were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: APG and RVT could prevent tissue damage induced by radiation effects in rat lung tissues. Hence, APG, LA, and RVT could provide a novel preventive action with their potential antioxidant anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their great safety characteristic.

BACKGROUND: The notion of "burden" has taken a key place in the evaluation of care, particularly in the case of rare diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the burden of neurofibromatosis 1 questionnaire (BoN) and to determine the perceived disease burden. RESULTS: The 15-item BoN was translated into Persian, and no items were removed based on content validity. The adequacy of the sample was acceptable (KMO = 0.902), and Bartlett's test of sphericity revealed statistically significant results (P < 0.001). Exploratory factor analysis revealed three factors. The reliability of the scale was good (Cronbach's alpha: 0.90), and the intraclass coefficient was 0.85. The severity of the burden of neurofibromatosis was moderate, and the total mean burden score was 33.12 ± 16.12. CONCLUSIONS: The Persian version of the BoN is an acceptable tool in terms of structure and content, and it specifically assesses the practical aspects of daily activities for patients with neurofibromatosis.

Background: Ionizing radiation (IR) is widely used in the treatment of cancer in radiotherapy. One of the main concerns of patients with gastrointestinal cancers undergoing radiotherapy is the harmful side effects of IR on normal tissues. The liver, kidney, and duodenum are usually exposed to high doses of radiation in the treatment of some cancers in abdominal region radiotherapy. We aimed to assess the radioprotective effects of Malva sylvestris L. against IR damages to the abdominal region. Materials and methods: This current study was conducted on 45 rats divided randomly into nine groups of five: A) negative control group, B) sham group, C) irradiation group, D) mallow treatment-1(200gr/kg), E) mallow treatment-2(400gr/kg), F) mallow treatment-3(600gr/kg), G) mallow treatment-4(200gr/kg) plus irradiation, H) mallow treatment-5(400gr/kg) plus irradiation, I) mallow treatment-6(600gr/kg) plus irradiation. Irradiation was performed with a 6Gy x-ray. Histopathological evaluations were performed 10 days after irradiation. Results: The histopathological examination results confirmed that preventive therapy with the effective dose of mallow reduced the liver, kidney, and intestine damage induced by radiation. The dose of 400 mg/kg was more effective than other selected dose in improving the damage caused by irradiation in the studied tissues. Conclusion: This study concludes that Malva sylvestris L. contributed to significant improvements in radiation-induced histological parameters of the liver and kidney and, to a lesser extent, in the intestine. These results collectively indicate that mallow is an effective radioprotective agent.

Background: Available data suggest inhibition of the pancreatic local-renin-angiotensin system (RAS) reduces tissue complications of diabetes. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of hydroalcoholic seed extract of Securigera securidaca (S. securidaca) (HESS) on the pancreatic local-RAS and its alternative pathway. Methods: Three doses of HESS were orally administered to three groups of diabetic male Wistar rats, and the results were compared with both diabetic and healthy control groups. After 35 days of treatment, the groups were assessed for the levels of pancreatic local-RAS components, including renin, angiotensinogen, ACE, and Ang II, as well as ACE2 and Ang-(1-7) in the alternative pathway. The effect of herbal medicine treatment on tissue damage status was investigated by evaluating tissue levels of oxidative stress, proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and through histopathological examination of the pancreas. Results: HESS showed a dose-dependent palliative effect on the tissue oxidative stress profile (P < 0.05) as well as the levels of pancreatic local-RAS components (P < 0.05), compared to diabetic control group. Considering the interrelationship between tissue oxidative stress and local-RAS activity, the moderating effect of HESS on this relationship could be attributed to the increase in total tissue antioxidant capacity (TAC) and pancreatic Ang-(1-7) concentration. Decrease in local-RAS activity was associated with decrease in the tissue levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL1, IL6, and TNFα) (P < 0.05) and increase in the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine of IL-10 (P < 0.05). In addition, histological results were consistent with tissue biochemical results. Conclusions: Due to the reduction of local pancreatic RAS activity as well as oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines following treatment with HESS, S. securidaca seed can be proposed as a suitable herbal supplement in the drug-treatment of diabetes.

In forensic medicine, it is important to identify whole or fragmented bodies. This aim can be particularly challenging in mass disasters. Palatal rugae patterns can be used as a surrogate parameter in forensic medicine. This stems from the difficulty in falsifying these patterns, their resistance to trauma, to decomposition for several days postmortem, and to combustion under high-temperatures, as well as being distinguishable among different races. The present study aimed to analyze the differences in the palatal rugae patterns among three Iranian ethnicities (Fars, Turkmen, and Sistani). This retrospective study involved the use of archived materials. The study casts were selected from the database of patients who visited a private orthodontics clinic. A total of 309 dental casts (103 Fars, 103 Turkmen, and 103 Sistani) were assessed, which belonged to 181 females and 128 males aged between 12 and 30 years (mean: 16.86 ± 3.18 years). The difference in the mean number of palatal rugae in women between the three ethnicities was statistically significant. Also, the differences in the total number of straight rugae were significant between the three ethnic groups. The most common rugae shapes in the three ethnic groups were the straight and wavy shapes. The length of the palatal rugae in the primary and secondary rugae among the study subjects younger than 18-years-old was significantly different between the three ethnic groups. Thus, the present research highlighted the differences in palatal rugae patterns among three Iranian ethnicities. Therefore, palatal rugae can be used in forensic medicine as a complementary approach to human identification.

BACKGROUND: During a radiological or nuclear disaster, exposure to a high dose of ionizing radiation usually results in cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, attack, and ischemia. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the mitigation effects of Spirulina in comparison to Metformin's. METHODS: 25 male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to five groups (5 rats in each): for the control group, rats did not receive any intervention. In group 2, spirulina was administered orally to rats. In group 3, rats were irradiated to the chest region with 15 Gray(Gy) x-radiation. In groups 4 and 5, rats were irradiated in the same way as group 3. Forty-eight hours after irradiation, treatment with Spirulina and Metformin began. All rats were sacrificed after ten weeks, and their heart tissues were removed for histopathological and biochemical assays. RESULTS: Results showed an elevation in Malondialdehyde (MDA) and decreasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Moreover, pathological changes of radiation were irregularities in the arrangement of myofibrils, proliferation, migration of mononuclear cells, vacuolation of the cytoplasm, and congestion. Administration of spirulina enhanced the SOD activity while did not affect MDA level and pathological change in heart tissue. Despite spirulina, metformin had a considerable effect on pathological lesions and decreased the level of MDA. CONCLUSION: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be involved in the late effects of radiationinduced heart injury, and scavenging these particles may contribute to reduced radiation side effects. Based on these results, Spirulina had no effect on radiation-induced cardiac damage, while metformin did. Higher Spirulina doses given over a longer period of time will likely have a greater heart-mitigate effect.

BACKGROUND: Some compounds have been investigated to mitigate the effect of radiation on the lung, such as pneumonitis and fibrosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the mitigation efficiency of Spirulina compared to the effect of Metformin. METHODS: 25 male Wistar rats were allotted in five groups: control, Spirulina, Radiation, Radiation plus Spirulina, and Radiation plus Metformin. Rat chest regions were irradiated by 15 Gray (Gy) xradiation using aLINAC. Forty-eight hours after irradiation, treatment with Spirulina and Metformin began. Eighty days after irradiation, all rats were sacrificed, and their lung tissues were removed for histopathological, and biochemical assays. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that irradiation increased MDA (Malondialdehyde) levels while suppressing the SOD (superoxide dismutase) and GPx(glutathione peroxidase) activity in the irradiated group. MDA levels in lung tissues were reduced with Metformin but not with Spirulina. Both Metformin and Spirulina increased the SOD and GPx activity in lung tissue. Moreover, histopathological evaluations showed extensive changes in the lung tissue including infiltration of lymph cells around the bronchioles and blood vessels, thickening of the alveolar wall, and the disruption of the alveolar structure, as well as accumulation of collagen fibers. Administration of Spirulina and Metformin significantly reduced pathological changes in lung tissue, although the effect of Metformin was greater than that of Spirulina. CONCLUSION: Spirulina could mitigate radiation-induced lung injury moderately, although Metformin is more effective than Spirulina as a mitigator agent.

Mucormycosis has a significant impact on patients' standard of living and, therefore, a high clinical suspicion, prediagnosis, and rapid treatment are critical in easing patients' suffering and fast recovery. Our focus is to conduct an organized review based on various variables on the patients' characteristics having mucormycosis in severe novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We examined Embase, PubMed-Medline, LitCovid, Web of Science, Scopus, and the reference lists of included case reports up to September 20, 2021, using the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) phrases and other keywords related to this topic. Subsequently, we investigated associated comorbidities, patient characteristics, position of mucormycosis, steroids use, body involvements, and outcomes. Overall, 77 studies were conducted and among these, 72 studies mentioned that the patients' age to be 48.13±14.33 (mean±standard deviation [SD]) years. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was reported in 77.9% (n=60) of cases. Studies showed that central nervous system (CNS) and bone involvement were reported in 62.3 (n=48) and 53.2% (n=41), respectively. More fatalities were observed in patients with mucormycosis with the active form of COVID-19. Also, men infected with mucormycosis significantly affected by COVID-19. In the end, mortality was higher in males with mucormycosis. As a result, a solid investigation into the root cause of mucormycosis, especially in COVID-19, should be included in the study plan. If the patient is COVID-19-positive and immunosuppressed, this opportunistic pathogen diagnostic test should not be overlooked.

It is strongly believed that aluminum is one of the insalubrious agents because of its neurotoxicity effects and influences on amyloid ß (Aß) production and tau protein hyperphosphorylation following oxidative stress, as one of the initial events in neurotoxicity. The autophagy process plays a considerable role in neurons in preserving intracellular homeostasis and recycling organelles and proteins, especially Aß and soluble tau. Thus, autophagy is suggested to ameliorate aluminum neurotoxicity effects, and dysfunction of this process can lead to an increase in detrimental proteins. However, the relationship between aluminum neurotoxicity and autophagy dysregulation in some dimensions remains unclear. In the present review, we want to give an overview of the autophagy roles in aluminum neurotoxicity and how dysregulation of autophagy can affect aluminum neurotoxicity.

Statement of the Problem: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a serious public health concern in the world. Motivational interviewing (MI) has been used to prevent ECC as a scientifically tested method for advising patients. Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of MI on prevention of ECC and identify factors shaping outcomes. Materials and Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted using MI as the intervention and the decay-missing-filled index (dmfs) report as result. Databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and Cochrane Library were systematically searched to recognize relevant RCTs evaluating the effects of MI on prevention of ECC from the beginning of 1989 to April 2020. Mean difference and 95% confidence intervals were summarized using a fixed-effect model. Visual inspection of Egger's test was used for potential publication bias in this study. Results: Six studies comprising 2776 contributors showed that MI had a significant effect on preventing ECC. There was no significant publication bias in the meta-analysis. A sensitivity analysis demonstrated that deleting any of the studies could not affect the significance of pooled results. This meta-analysis showed that MI might prevent ECC. Conclusion: MI will be effective at any age, whether it is a baby or a child, and more than the number of interview sessions, the quality of the sessions should be considered. Moreover, follow-up for at least 3 years will be very effective.

The ongoing multi-country human monkeypox (HMPX) outbreak was declared as a public health emergency of international concern. Considering the key role of healthcare workers (HCWs) in mitigating the HMPX outbreak, we aimed to assess their level of knowledge and their confidence in diagnosis and management of the disease, besides the assessment of their attitude towards emerging virus infections from a conspiracy point of view. An online survey was distributed among HCWs in Jordan, a Middle Eastern country, during May−July 2022 using a questionnaire published in a previous study among university students in health schools in Jordan. The study sample comprised 606 HCWs, with about two-thirds being either physicians (n = 204, 33.7%) or nurses (n = 190, 31.4%). Four out of the 11 HMPX knowledge items had <50% correct responses with only 33.3% of the study respondents having previous knowledge that vaccination is available to prevent HMPX. A majority of study respondents (n = 356, 58.7%) strongly agreed, agreed or somewhat agreed that the spread of HMPX is related to a role of male homosexuals. Confidence in the ability of diagnosis based on the available monkeypox virus diagnostic tests was reported by 50.2% of the respondents, while the confidence levels were lower for the ability to manage (38.9%) and to diagnose (38.0%) HMPX cases based on their current level of knowledge and skills. Higher confidence levels for HMPX diagnosis and management were found among physicians compared to nurses. The endorsement of conspiracy beliefs about virus emergence was associated with lower HMPX knowledge, the belief in the role of male homosexuals in HMPX spread, and with lower diagnosis and management confidence levels. The current study highlighted the gaps in knowledge regarding HMPX among HCWs in Jordan as well as the lack of confidence to diagnose and manage cases among physicians and nurses. Raising the awareness about the disease is needed urgently considering the rapid escalation in the number of cases worldwide with reported cases in the Middle East. The attitude towards male homosexuals' role in HMPX spread necessitates proper intervention measures to prevent stigma and discrimination among this risk group. The adoption of conspiratorial beliefs regarding virus emergence was widely prevalent and this issue needs to be addressed with proper and accurate knowledge considering its potential harmful impact.

Statement of the Problem: As a stimulant drug of the central nervous system, methamphetamine reduces salivary secretion by stimulating inhibitory α2-receptors in the sympathetic system. The acidity of this substance reduces the salivary pH and causes severe dental caries and erosion in the cervical region of teeth, appearing as "meth mouth". Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effects of methamphetamine withdrawal on the volume and pH of stimulated saliva in patients under treatment at rehabilitation centers. Materials and Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 20 individuals at the rehabilitation centers of Gorgan, Iran. The volume and pH of stimulated saliva were measured at three intervals: before withdrawal, four days after withdrawal, and 30 days after withdrawal. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA test in SPSS. Results: The results showed a significant difference in the mean volume of saliva before and after withdrawal (p< 0.05). Thirty days after withdrawal, the mean volume of saliva was significantly different from the mean volume after four days (p< 0.05). Moreover, the mean pH of saliva after withdrawal was significantly different from the mean pH before withdrawal (p< 0.001). On the other hand, the mean salivary pH at 30 days after withdrawal was not significantly different from the mean pH on the fourth day after withdrawal (p> 0.05). Conclusion: It seems that methamphetamine withdrawal influences the volume and pH of stimulated saliva in patients under treatment at rehabilitation centers.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Faces considered attractive tend to possess a general harmony; however, scientific studies on the quantitative basis of human facial attractiveness are still sparse. The golden proportion has been the most documented ratio, but the actual existence of codified facial ratios in facially attractive individuals remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the deviation from the golden proportion in the measurements of different natural vertical facial ratios. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of the electronic databases that included PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Scopus Secondary documents, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was conducted using the terms "golden proportion", "golden proportions", "golden ratio", "golden ratios", "golden number", "golden section", "divine proportion", "divine proportions", "divine ratio", "divine ratios", and "Fibonacci" in combination with 1 or more of the ensuing terms: "facial proportion", "facial proportions", "facial measurement", and "facial measurements". Deviation of the facial proportions from the golden proportions was further analyzed by using a 1-sample t test (α=.05). RESULTS: The 1-sample test showed no significant difference among the means of each variable (P>.05), suggesting that the golden proportion is found in natural facial esthetics. CONCLUSIONS: No significant association was found between the golden ratio and facial evaluation scores among all ethnicities. The measurements and proportions for facial balance in the study population showed that the participant's facial height proportions did not follow the golden proportion.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Nanoparticles could represent a therapeutic approach for the treatment of various diseases. It has been reported that cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) have potential useful effects. Therefore, we aimed to examine the protective effects of the CeO2 NPs in two models of liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis, in rats. METHODS: In this experimental study, male rats were randomly divided into different experimental groups including: Experiment 1; group1: healthy rats received normal saline, 2: CCl4 group, 3: CCl4 + nanoparticle. Experiment 2; group1: healthy rats received chow diet, 2: NAFLD group, 3: NAFLD + nanoparticle. The oxidative stress markers were determined in the liver and intestine. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels were measured by ELISA. Histopathological changes of liver and intestine were evaluated by light microspore. RESULTS: Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and glutathione (GSH) levels significantly decreased, while malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant status (TOS) were significantly increased in the liver, and intestine of the NAFLD and CCl4 group compared with control rats. However, the use of nanoparticles significantly normalized these markers. The levels of the TNF-α were significantly reduced in the nanoparticle group as compared with NAFLD model and CCl4-treated rats. CeO2 NPs also normalized the liver and intestinal histological changes. CONCLUSIONS: Our finding revealed that CeO2 NPs has potential protective effects by increasing antioxidant activity, and reducing inflammation.
