RESUMO

Code- and meaning-related emergent literacy skills of autistic children were compared to those of non-autistic children who did not differ on age and full-scale IQ (FSIQ). The associations between joint attention skills and early literacy abilities were of interest. Seventeen autistic and 20 non-autistic children (48 to 72 months) participated. Parents completed a joint attention measure and children completed code- and meaning-related emergent literacy skills measures. Findings showed that autistic and non-autistic children did not differ on code-related emergent literacy skills, letter knowledge and phonological awareness, but autistic children scored lower on print conceptsand name writing. Autistic children also scored lower on meaning-related skills assessing the comprehensive and quality of oral narratives. FSIQ predicted print concept knowledge in all children. Receptive vocabulary was a significant predictor of meaning-related skills in autistic children and the quality of oral narratives in non-autisticchildren. Joint attention was also a significant predictor of oral narrative quality in autistic children. Recommendations for promoting emergent literacy skills using a strength-based approach are discussed.

The use of high-strength steel (HSS) is a current trend of the construction industry. Tubular profiles are widely used in various structural applications because of their high stiffness-to-weight ratio, exceptional resistance to torsion, and aesthetic appearance. However, the increase of the strength for the same elastic modulus of the material and geometry of tubular profiles is often not proportional to the rise of the load-bearing capacity of the structural element. The obtained experimental results support the above inference. The study was based on the flexural test results of two groups of HSS and normal-strength steel (NSS) tubular specimens with a 100 × 100 × 4 mm (height × width × thickness) cross-section. Numerical (finite element) simulation results demonstrated that the shape of the cross-section influenced the efficiency of utilisation of HSS. The relationship between the relative increase of the load-bearing capacity of the beam specimen and the corresponding change of the steel strength determined the utilisation efficiency.

Many adolescents fall asleep too late to get enough sleep (8-10 h) on school nights. Morning bright light advances circadian rhythms and could help adolescents fall asleep earlier. Morning bright light treatment before school, however, is difficult to fit into their morning schedule; weekends are more feasible. We examined phase advances in response to morning light treatment delivered over one weekend. Thirty-seven adolescents (16 males; 14.7-18.0 years) who reported short school-night sleep (≤7 h) and late bedtimes (school-nights ≥23:00; weekend/non-school nights ≥24:00) slept as usual at home for ∼2 weeks ("baseline") and then kept a fixed sleep schedule (baseline school-night bed and wake-up times ±30 min) for ∼1 week before living in the lab for one weekend. Sleep behavior was measured with wrist actigraphy and sleep diary. On Saturday morning, we woke each participant 1 h after his/her midpoint of baseline weekend/non-school night sleep and 1 h earlier on Sunday. They remained in dim room light (∼20 lux) or received 1.5 or 2.5 h of intermittent morning bright light (∼6000 lux) on both mornings. The dim light melatonin onset (DLMO), a phase marker of the circadian timing system, was measured on Friday and Sunday evenings to compute the weekend circadian phase shift. The dim room light and 1.5-h bright light groups advanced the same amount (0.6 ± 0.4 and 0.6 ± 0.5 h). The 2.5-h bright light group advanced 1.0 ± 0.4 h, which was significantly more than the other groups. These data suggest that it is possible to phase advance the circadian clock of adolescents who have late bedtimes and short school-night sleep in one weekend using light that begins shortly after their sleep midpoint.

In this study, monolingual (English) and bilingual (English/Spanish, English/Urdu) five- and six-year-old children completed a grammaticality judgment test in order to assess their awareness of the grammaticality of two types of syntactic constructions in English: word order and gender representation. All children were better at detecting grammatically correct and incorrect word order constructions than gender constructions, regardless of language group. In fact, bilingualism per se did not impact the results as much as receptive vocabulary range. For example, children with the highest receptive vocabulary scores were more accurate in detecting incorrect word order constructions (i.e., word order violations, semantic anomalies) and incorrect gender agreement than children in the lower receptive vocabulary ranges. However, no differences were found between the ranges for ambiguous gender constructions. These results highlight the importance of receptive vocabulary ability on syntactic awareness performance, regardless of language group.

Self-conscious emotions (e.g., guilt, shame, and pride) are complex emotions that require self-reflection and self-evaluation, and are thought to facilitate the maintenance of societal norms and personal standards. Despite the importance of self-conscious emotions, most research has focused on basic emotion processing in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Therefore, in the present study, we used the Test of Self-Conscious Affect for Children (TOSCA-C) to assess proneness to, or propensity to experience, the self-conscious emotions guilt, shame, and pride in children with ASD and neurotypical children. The TOSCA-C is designed to capture a child's natural tendency to experience a given emotion across a range of everyday situations [Tangney, Stuewig, & Mashek, 2007]. We also assessed how individual characteristics contribute to the development of proneness to self-conscious emotions, including theory of mind (ToM) and ASD symptomatology. In comparison to neurotypical children, children with ASD showed less proneness to guilt, although all children showed relatively high levels of proneness to guilt. Greater ToM ability was related to more proneness to guilt and authentic pride in children with ASD. Additionally, we found that children with ASD with more severe symptomatology were more prone to hubristic pride. Our results provide evidence of differences in proneness to self-conscious emotions in children with ASD, as well as highlight important mechanisms contributing to how children with ASD may experience self-conscious emotions. LAY SUMMARY: This research examined proneness to guilt, shame, and pride in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and neurotypical children. We found that children with ASD showed less proneness to guilt than neurotypical children. Better understanding of theory of mind was related to greater proneness to guilt and pride, but only for children with ASD. These findings are important because these complex emotions are linked with both positive and negative social behaviors towards others and oneself.

This study investigates the mechanical behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams internally reinforced with steel bars and externally bonded with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets fixed by adhesive and hybrid jointing techniques. In particular, attention is paid to the load resistance and failure modes of composite beams. The steel fibers were used to avoiding the rip-off failure of the concrete cover. The CFRP sheets were fixed to the concrete surface by epoxy adhesive as well as combined with various configurations of small-diameter steel pins for mechanical fastening to form a hybrid connection. Such hybrid jointing techniques were found to be particularly advantageous in avoiding brittle debonding failure, by promoting progressive failure within the hybrid joints. The use of CFRP sheets was also effective in suppressing the localization of the discrete cracks. The development of the crack pattern was monitored using the digital image correlation method. As revealed from the image analyses, with an appropriate layout of the steel pins, brittle failure of the concrete-carbon fiber interface could be effectively prevented. Inverse analysis of the moment-curvature diagrams was conducted, and it was found that a simplified tension-stiffening model with a constant residual stress level at 90% of the strength of the SFRC is adequate for numerically simulating the deformation behavior of beams up to the debonding of the CFRP sheets.
