INTRODUCTION: The assessment of hemodynamic status in polytrauma patients is an important principle of the primary survey of trauma patients, and screening for ongoing hemorrhage and assessing the efficacy of resuscitation is vital in avoiding preventable death and significant morbidity in these patients. Invasive procedures may lead to various complications and the IVC ultrasound measurements are increasingly recognized as a potential noninvasive replacement or a source of adjunct information. AIMOF THIS STUDY: The study aimed to determine if repeated ultrasound assessment of the inferior vena cava (diameter, collapsibility (IVC- CI) in major trauma patients presenting with collapsible IVC before resuscitation and after the first hour of resuscitation will predict total intravenous fluid requirements at first 24 h. PATIENTS & METHODS: The current study was conducted on 120 patients presented to the emergency department with Major blunt trauma (having significant injury to two or more ISS body regions or an ISS greater than 15). The patients(cases) group (shocked group) (60) patients with signs of shock such as decreased blood pressure < 90/60 mmHg or a more than 30% decrease from the baseline systolic pressure, heart rate > 100 b/m, cold, clammy skin, capillary refill > 2 s and their shock index above0.9. The control group (non-shocked group) (60) patients with normal blood pressure and heart rate, no other signs of shock (normal capillary refill, warm skin), and (shock index ≤ 0.9). Patients were evaluated at time 0 (baseline), 1 h after resucitation, and 24 h after 1st hour for:(blood pressure, pulse, RR, SO2, capillary refill time, MABP, IVCci, IVCmax, IVCmin). RESULTS: Among 120 Major blunt trauma patients, 98 males (81.7%) and 22 females (18.3%) were included in this analysis; hypovolemic shocked patients (60 patients) were divided into two main groups according to IVC diameter after the first hour of resuscitation; IVC repleted were 32 patients (53.3%) while 28 patients (46.7%) were IVC non-repleted. In our study population, there were statistically significant differences between repleted and non-repleted IVC cases regarding IVCD, DIVC min, IVCCI (on arrival) (after 1 h) (after 24 h of 1st hour of resuscitation) ( p-value < 0.05) and DIVC Max (on arrival) (after 1 h) (p-value < 0.001). There is no statistically significant difference (p-value = 0.075) between repleted and non-repleted cases regarding DIVC Max (after 24 h).In our study, we found that IVCci0 at a cut-off point > 38.5 has a sensitivity of 80.0% and Specificity of 85.71% with AUC 0.971 and a good 95% CI (0.938 - 1.0), which means that IVCci of 38.6% or more can indicate fluid responsiveness. We also found that IVCci 1 h (after fluid resuscitation) at cut-off point > 28.6 has a sensitivity of 80.0% and Specificity of 75% with AUC 0.886 and good 95% CI (0.803 - 0.968), which means that IVCci of 28.5% or less can indicate fluid unresponsiveness after 1st hour of resuscitation. We found no statistically significant difference between repleted and non-repleted cases regarding fluid requirement and amount of blood transfusion at 1st hour of resuscitation (p-value = 0.104). CONCLUSION: Repeated bedside ultrasonography of IVCD, and IVCci before and after the first hour of resuscitation could be an excellent reliable invasive tool that can be used in estimating the First 24 h of fluid requirement in Major blunt trauma patients and assessment of fluid status.

A mechanistic connection between aging and development is largely unexplored. Through profiling age-related chromatin and transcriptional changes across 22 murine cell types, analyzed alongside previous mouse and human organismal maturation datasets, we uncovered a transcription factor binding site (TFBS) signature common to both processes. Early-life candidate cis-regulatory elements (cCREs), progressively losing accessibility during maturation and aging, are enriched for cell-type identity TFBSs. Conversely, cCREs gaining accessibility throughout life have a lower abundance of cell identity TFBSs but elevated activator protein 1 (AP-1) levels. We implicate TF redistribution toward these AP-1 TFBS-rich cCREs, in synergy with mild downregulation of cell identity TFs, as driving early-life cCRE accessibility loss and altering developmental and metabolic gene expression. Such remodeling can be triggered by elevating AP-1 or depleting repressive H3K27me3. We propose that AP-1-linked chromatin opening drives organismal maturation by disrupting cell identity TFBS-rich cCREs, thereby reprogramming transcriptome and cell function, a mechanism hijacked in aging through ongoing chromatin opening.

Precise modeling of weighted mean temperature (Tm) is essential for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) meteorology. In retrieving precipitable water vapor (PWV) from GNSS, Tm is a crucial parameter for the conversion of zenith wet delay (ZWD) into PWV. In this study, an improved Tm model, named EGWMT, was developed to accurately estimate Tm at any site in Egypt. This new model was established using hourly ERA5 reanalysis data from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) covering the period from 2008 to 2019 with a spatial resolution of 0.25° × 0.25°. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated using two types of data sources, including hourly ERA5 reanalysis data from 2019 to 2022 and radiosonde profiles over a six-year period from 2017 to 2022. The accuracy of the EGWMT model was compared to that of four other models: Bevis, Elhaty, ANN and GGTm-Ts using two statistical quantities, including mean absolute bias (MAB) and root mean square error (RMSE). The results demonstrated that the EGWMT model outperformed the Bevis, Elhaty, ANN and GGTm-Ts models with RMSE improvements of 32.5%, 30.8%, 39% and 48.2%, respectively in the ERA5 data comparison. In comparison with radiosonde data, the EGWMT model achieved RMSE improvements of 22.5%, 34%, 38% and 19.5% against Bevis, Elhaty, ANN and GGTm-Ts models, respectively. In order to determine the significance of differences in means and variances, statistical tests, including t-test and F-test, were conducted. The results confirmed that there were significant differences between the EGWMT model and the four other models.

OBJECTIVES: The molecular mechanisms behind orthodontic tooth movements (OTM) were investigated by clarifying the role of chemical messengers released by cells. METHODS: Using the Cochrane library, Google scholar, and PubMed databases, a literature search was conducted, and studies published from 1984 to 2024 were considered. RESULTS: Both bone growth and remodeling may occur when a tooth is subjected to mechanical stress. These chemicals have a significant effect on the stimulation and regulation of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes during alveolar bone remodeling. This regulation can take place in pathological conditions, such as periodontal diseases, or during OTM alone. This comprehensive review outlines key molecular mechanisms underlying OTM and explores various clinical assumptions associated with specific molecules and their functional domains during this process. Furthermore, clinical applications of certain molecules such as relaxin, prostaglandin E (PGE), and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) in accelerating OTM have been reported. Our findings underscore the existing gap between OTM clinical applications and basic research investigations. CONCLUSION: A comprehensive understanding of orthodontic treatment is enriched by insights into biological systems. We reported the activation of osteoblasts, osteoclast precursor cells, osteoclasts, and osteocytes in response to mechanical stress, leading to targeted cellular and molecular interventions and facilitating rapid and regulated alveolar bone remodeling during tooth movement. Despite the shortcomings of clinical studies in accelerating OTM, this review highlights the crucial role of biological agents in this process and advocates for prioritizing high-quality human studies in future research to gain further insights from clinical trials.

The complex interactions between bacterioplankton and phytoplankton have prompted numerous studies that investigate phytoplankton microbiomes with the aim of characterizing beneficial or opportunistic taxa and elucidating core bacterial members. Oftentimes, this knowledge is garnered through 16S rRNA gene profiling of microbiomes from phytoplankton isolated across spatial and temporal scales, yet these studies do not offer insight into microbiome assembly and structuring. In this study, we aimed to identify taxa central to structuring and establishing the microbiome of the ubiquitous diatom Asterionellopsis glacialis. We introduced a diverse environmental bacterial community to A. glacialis in nutrient-rich or nutrient-poor media in a continuous dilution culture setup and profiled the bacterial community over 7 days. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing showed that cyanobacteria (Coleofasciculaceae) and Rhodobacteraceae dominate the microbiome early on and maintain a persistent association throughout the experiment. Differential abundance, co-abundance networks, and differential association analyses revealed that specific members of the family Rhodobacteraceae, particularly Sulfitobacter amplicon sequence variants, become integral members in microbiome assembly. In the presence of the diatom, Sulfitobacter species and other Rhodobacteraceae developed positive associations with taxa that are typically in high abundance in marine ecosystems (Pelagibacter and Synechococcus), leading to restructuring of the microbiome compared to diatom-free controls. These positive associations developed predominantly under oligotrophic conditions, highlighting the importance of investigating phytoplankton microbiomes in as close to natural conditions as possible to avoid biases that develop under routine laboratory conditions. These findings offer further insight into phytoplankton-bacteria interactions and illustrate the importance of Rhodobacteraceae, not merely as phytoplankton symbionts but as key taxa involved in microbiome assembly. IMPORTANCE: Most, if not all, microeukaryotic organisms harbor an associated microbial community, termed the microbiome. The microscale interactions that occur between these partners have global-scale consequences, influencing marine primary productivity, carbon cycling, and harmful algal blooms to name but a few. Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in the study of phytoplankton microbiomes, particularly within the context of bloom dynamics. However, long-standing questions remain regarding the process of phytoplankton microbiome assembly. The significance of our research is to tease apart the mechanism of microbiome assembly with a particular focus on identifying bacterial taxa, which may not merely be symbionts but architects of the phytoplankton microbiome. Our results strengthen the understanding of the ecological mechanisms that underpin phytoplankton-bacteria interactions in order to accurately predict marine ecosystem responses to environmental perturbations.

Objective: To study the clinical characteristics and therapeutic means of primary atrophic rhinitis. Method: We present 4 cases of atrophic rhinitis caused by Klebsiella ozaenae observed in our hospital over a period of 5 years. Results: All patients presented the clinical triad: mucosal atrophy, presence of crusts, and cacosmia. Treatment was medical in 3 patients and surgical in 1 patient. We used rifampicin and sulfamethoxazole as antibiotics as well as trimethoprim for a period of 4 months. The surgical treatment consisted of recalibration of the nasal cavities by placing 2 silicone sticks in the subperiosteum. The evolution was marked by obstruction and cacosmia in 3 out of 4 patients. Conclusion: The treatment of primary atrophic rhinitis poses a problem for the clinician in terms of means and therapeutic effectiveness given that it is a chronic pathology requiring regular monitoring.

The objective of the current study was to explore the correlation between repeated sprint sets (RSS) ability and several physical attributes, including maximum sprint speed, maximal aerobic speed, maximal anaerobic speed, aerobic capacity, and explosive strength. Moreover, the aim was to assess the suitability of RSS as a comprehensive evaluation tool for physical qualities and to determine which physical field tests most accurately predict RSS in elite young male soccer players. A total of thirty-two young elite male soccer players (mean age 14.6 ± 0.3 years; predicted years from peak height velocity (PHV): - 0.4 ± 0.3; years in training: 3.7 ± 0.5) voluntarily participated in the study. The players participated in eight consecutive specific physical tests, with a minimum 72-h recovery between each session to minimize the impact of fatigue during the second trial. The participants completed the tests in the following order: RSS test, Vam-Eval test, a constant velocity test performed until exhaustion at 100% of vVO2max (tlim100), 20-m Multi-Stage Shuttle Run test (VMSRT), Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1), Maximal Anaerobic Shuttle Running Test (VMASRT), Maximal Sprinting Speed Test (20-m flying sprint), Countermovement Jump (CMJ), and Standing Long Jump test (SLJ). The results of the study showed that there were very large negative correlations between tlim100 and SST (sum of sprint times), and large negative correlations between Yo-Yo IR1, Vam-Eval, and SST during RSS in young elite male soccer players (p < 0.05). Additionally, VMASRT and SLJ demonstrated a moderate negative correlation with SST (p < 0.05). In contrast, significant positive correlations were found between 20-m flying sprint and the SST (p < 0.05). According to the stepwise multiple linear regression analysis, the primary predictors of SST, ranked by importance, were tlim100 and Yo-Yo IR1. These two predictors collectively accounted for 72% of the variance in players' SST (p < 0.0001). Due to the importance of aerobic capacity and short repeated accelerations/sprint sets for overall competitive performance in soccer, in conclusion, our results suggest that elite young male soccer players should perform both high intensity interval training and aeorobic capactity exercises as part of soccer training if the primary outcome is to improve repeated sprint ability performance.

Stony corals, the engines and engineers of reef ecosystems, face unprecedented threats from anthropogenic environmental change. Corals are holobionts that comprise the cnidarian animal host and a diverse community of bacteria, archaea, viruses and eukaryotic microorganisms. Recent research shows that the bacterial microbiome has a pivotal role in coral biology. A healthy bacterial assemblage contributes to nutrient cycling and stress resilience, but pollution, overfishing and climate change can break down these symbiotic relationships, which results in disease, bleaching and, ultimately, coral death. Although progress has been made in characterizing the spatial-temporal diversity of bacteria, we are only beginning to appreciate their functional contribution. In this Review, we summarize the ecological and metabolic interactions between bacteria and other holobiont members, highlight the biotic and abiotic factors influencing the structure of bacterial communities and discuss the impact of climate change on these communities and their coral hosts. We emphasize how microbiome-based interventions can help to decipher key mechanisms underpinning coral health and promote reef resilience. Finally, we explore how recent technological developments may be harnessed to address some of the most pressing challenges in coral microbiology, providing a road map for future research in this field.

The aim was to investigate the effect of breathing conditions and swimming pace on the relationships between the impairment, the breathing laterality and motor coordination symmetry in elite front crawl Para swimmers. Fifteen elite Para swimmers with unilateral physical impairment or with visual impairment and unilateral breathing preference performed eight 25 m using four breathing conditions (every three strokes, every two strokes on preferred and non-preferred breathing side and apnea) at slow and fast paces in a randomized order. Multicamera video system and five sensors have been used to assess arm and leg stroke phases and to compute symmetry of arm coordination (SIIdC) and of leg kick rate (SIKR). Our findings emphasized motor coordination asymmetry whatever the breathing conditions and swimming paces, highlighting the influence of impairment. Multinomial logistic regression exhibited a high probability for motor coordination asymmetry (SIIdC and SIKR) to be present in categories of Para swimmers with impairment and breathing laterality on the same side, suggesting the joined effect of unilateral impairment and unilateral breathing. Moreover, unilateral physical impairment and breathing laterality could also occur on different sides and generate motor coordination asymmetry on different sides and different levels (arms vs. legs). Finally, visual impairment seems amplify the effect of unilateral breathing on motor coordination asymmetry.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Liver dysfunction is a common manifestation of the COVID-19 infection. We aimed to study transaminase abnormalities through different waves of COVID-19 and their relations to disease severity or mortality. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study included 521 Egyptian patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Data was retrieved from the medical records of patients who were admitted from April 2020 to October 2021 in Kasr Al-Ainy Hospitals, Cairo University, with categorization according to disease severity in correspondence to the four waves. RESULTS: The median age was lower in the first wave compared to other waves, with male predominance across all waves. The most commonly encountered comorbidity overall was hypertension, followed by diabetes mellitus. White blood cells, ferritin, and interleukin-6 showed the highest median values in the second wave, with significantly higher median C-reactive protein on day 1 in the first wave. Forty percent of the patients showed elevated hepatic transaminases on admission in four waves, with no statistically significant difference between waves. On day 5, around half of the patients had elevated transaminases, with no significant difference between waves. Most CT findings were of moderate severity. Clinical severity was higher in the second wave. It was observed that the higher the disease severity, the greater the proportion of patients with elevated hepatic transaminases. The mortality rate was markedly high in cases who had elevated ALT or AST on day 5. The association between elevated enzymes on admission and mortality was seen in the first wave only, with a fatality rate of 22.5% in cases with increased baseline ALT and AST versus 5% in those with normal baseline enzymes. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in transaminases between the four waves. Elevated transaminases were positively associated with increased mortality and severity, reflecting their prognostic value.

Photosynthetic eukaryotes, such as microalgae and plants, foster fundamentally important relationships with their microbiome based on the reciprocal exchange of chemical currencies. Among these, the dicarboxylate metabolite azelaic acid (Aze) appears to play an important, but heterogeneous, role in modulating these microbiomes, as it is used as a carbon source for some heterotrophs but is toxic to others. However, the ability of Aze to promote or inhibit growth, as well as its uptake and assimilation mechanisms into bacterial cells are mostly unknown. Here, we use transcriptomics, transcriptional factor coexpression networks, uptake experiments, and metabolomics to unravel the uptake, catabolism, and toxicity of Aze on two microalgal-associated bacteria, Phycobacter and Alteromonas, whose growth is promoted or inhibited by Aze, respectively. We identify the first putative Aze transporter in bacteria, a 'C4-TRAP transporter', and show that Aze is assimilated through fatty acid degradation, with further catabolism occurring through the glyoxylate and butanoate metabolism pathways when used as a carbon source. Phycobacter took up Aze at an initial uptake rate of 3.8×10-9 nmol/cell/hr and utilized it as a carbon source in concentrations ranging from 10 µM to 1 mM, suggesting a broad range of acclimation to Aze availability. For growth-impeded bacteria, we infer that Aze inhibits the ribosome and/or protein synthesis and that a suite of efflux pumps is utilized to shuttle Aze outside the cytoplasm. We demonstrate that seawater amended with Aze becomes enriched in bacterial families that can catabolize Aze, which appears to be a different mechanism from that in soil, where modulation by the host plant is required. This study enhances our understanding of carbon cycling in the oceans and how microscale chemical interactions can structure marine microbial populations. In addition, our findings unravel the role of a key chemical currency in the modulation of eukaryote-microbiome interactions across diverse ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive, cureless disease, characterized by increased pulmonary vascular resistance and remodeling, with subsequent ventricular dilatation and failure. New therapeutic targets are being investigated for their potential roles in improving PAH patients' symptoms and reversing pulmonary vascular pathology. METHOD: We aimed to address the available knowledge from the published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding the role of Rho-kinase (ROCK) inhibitors, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) inhibitors, estrogen inhibitors, and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activators on the PAH evaluation parameters. This systematic review (SR) was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (CDR42022340658) and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. RESULTS: Overall, 5092 records were screened from different database and registries; 8 RCTs that met our inclusion criteria were included. The marked difference in the study designs and the variability of the selected outcome measurement tools among the studies made performing a meta-analysis impossible. However, the main findings of this SR relate to the powerful potential of the AMPK activator and the imminent antidiabetic drug metformin, and the BMP2 inhibitor sotatercept as promising PAH-modifying therapies. There is a need for long-term studies to evaluate the effect of the ROCK inhibitor fasudil and the estrogen aromatase inhibitor anastrozole in PAH patients. The role of tacrolimus in PAH is questionable. The discrepancy in the hemodynamic and clinical parameters necessitates defining cut values to predict improvement. The differences in the PAH etiologies render the judgment of the therapeutic potential of the tested drugs challenging. CONCLUSION: Metformin and sotatercept appear as promising therapeutic drugs for PAH. CLINICAL TRIALS REGISTRATION: This work was registered in PROSPERO (CDR42022340658).

The emergence of modern prosthetics controlled by bio-signals has been facilitated by AI and microchip technology innovations. AI algorithms are trained using sEMG produced by muscles during contractions. The data acquisition procedure may result in discomfort and fatigue, particularly for amputees. Furthermore, prosthetic companies restrict sEMG signal exchange, limiting data-driven research and reproducibility. GANs present a viable solution to the aforementioned concerns. GANs can generate high-quality sEMG, which can be utilised for data augmentation, decrease the training time required by prosthetic users, enhance classification accuracy and ensure research reproducibility. This research proposes the utilisation of a one-dimensional deep convolutional GAN (1DDCGAN) to generate the sEMG of hand gestures. This approach involves the incorporation of dynamic time wrapping, fast Fourier transform and wavelets as discriminator inputs. Two datasets were utilised to validate the methodology, where five windows and increments were utilised to extract features to evaluate the synthesised sEMG quality. In addition to the traditional classification and augmentation metrics, two novel metrics-the Mantel test and the classifier two-sample test-were used for evaluation. The 1DDCGAN preserved the inter-feature correlations and generated high-quality signals, which resembled the original data. Additionally, the classification accuracy improved by an average of 1.21-5%.

Burkitt Lymphoma (BL) is a highly aggressive B-type non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It rarely develops at the level of the sinonasal cavities, especially in young children. We present the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with a 2-month history of nasal obstruction, snoring, and epistaxis followed by a recent dyspnea. Examination revealed a protruding tissue mass in the left nasal cavity. Computed tomography scan showed a homogenous soft-tissue mass in the left nasal cavity extending toward the ipsilateral orbit, infratemporal fossa, nasopharynx, as well as the ethmoid and maxillary sinuses. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a homogenous infiltrating mass with a hypo-intense signal on T2-weighted images reaching the infratemporal fossa and oropharynx. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of BL. The patient was referred to the clinical hematology department and received complex chemotherapy. Following chemotherapy, imaging revealed significant regression of the mass. We performed a nasopharyngeal biopsy which confirmed the absence of any persistent disease. This case report highlights a rare case of an extensive sinonasal BL emphasizing the importance of a high level of suspicion to ensure an early diagnosis and treatment.

Introduction: Despite recognition that health research is an imperative to progress toward universal health coverage, resources for health research are limited. Yet, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, more than 85% of the resources available for health research are spent on answering less relevant research questions. This misalignment is partially due to absence of locally determined health research priorities. In this study, we identified health research priorities which, if implemented, can inform local interventions required to accelerate progress toward universal health coverage in Somalia. Methods: We adapted the child health and nutrition research initiative method for research priority setting and applied it in 4 major phases: (1) establishment of an exercise management team, (2) a web-based survey among 84 respondents to identify health research questions; (3) categorization of identified health research questions; and (4) a workshop with 42 participants to score and rank the identified health research questions. Ethical approval was received from ethics review committee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (Ref:26524) and the Somali Research and Development Institute (Ref: EA0143). Results: Two hundred and thirty-one unique health research questions were identified and categorized under health systems, services and social determinants (77), communicable diseases (54), non-communicable diseases (41) and reproductive, maternal, new-born, child, adolescent health and nutrition (59). A priority score ranging from 1 to 9 was assigned to each of the questions. For each category, a list of 10 questions with the highest priority scores was developed. Across the four categories, an overall list of 10 questions with the highest priority scores was also developed. These related to bottlenecks to accessing essential health services, use of evidence in decision making, antimicrobial resistance, distribution and risk factors for non-communicable diseases, post-traumatic stress disorder and factors associated with low antenatal care attendance among others. Conclusion and recommendations: The developed priority research questions can be used to focus health research and to inform appropriation of health research resources to questions that contribute to generation of local health system knowledge which is required to accelerate progress toward universal health coverage in Somalia. The Somalia national institute of health should set up a consortium for provision of technical and financial support for research addressing the identified priority research questions, establish a mechanism to continuously monitor the extent to which new health interventions in Somalia are informed by knowledge generated through conducting prioritized health research and prioritize interventions aimed at strengthening the broader national health research system for Somalia.

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) TUG1 acts as a proto-oncogene, allowing the proliferation of tumor cells, and it has been related to inflammation. Therefore, we aimed in this study to investigate for the first time the role of TUG1 gene polymorphism and the TUG1 level as biomarkers in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and their link to lupus nephritis 145 SLE. A total of 145 healthy controls were subjected to clinical and laboratory evaluation. The disease activity was assessed by the SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) score. SLE patients were divided into two subgroups according to the presence of lupus nephritis. The TUG1 gene polymorphisms rs5749201 and rs886471 were determined by Sanger sequencing, and TUG1 expression was assessed by qRT-PCR. There was a significant increase in the risk of SLE AA, TA, dominant genotypes, and the A allele of rs5749201 (p < 0.001) by 4.9-, 10.1-, 6.5-, and 2.5-fold in comparison to the relative control. GG and TG, dominant genotypes and the G allele of rs886471 (p < 0.01) increased the risk by 5.09-, 11.9-, 6.5-, and 2.6-fold. AA, A allele, dominant and recessive rs5749201genotypes increased the risk of lupus nephritis by 16.6-, 7.4-, 7.1-, and 12.2-fold, respectively (p < 0.05). GG, dominant and recessive genotypes, and the G allele of rs886471 increased the risk of lupus nephritis by 17.04-, 7.8-, 9.4-, and 6.08-fold, respectively (p < 0.05). Additionally, the AG haplotype increased the risk of SLE and lupus nephritis by 2.7- and 7.8-fold, respectively. The AA rs5749201 and GG rs886471 variants are significantly associated with more severe disease (p < 0.001). TUG1 expression was significantly higher in SLE than in the control and in the lupus nephritis than in non-lupus nephritis cases (p < 0.05). Interestingly, AA rs5749201 and GG rs886471 were significantly associated with higher TUG1 levels (p < 0.001). It was also found that AA rs5749201 and high SLEDAI were predictors of lupus nephritis. Overall, our findings illustrated for the first time that TUG1 gene rs5749201 and rs886471 variants were associated with increased risk of SLE, more severe disease, and lupus nephritis, and the TUG1 level could be used as a diagnostic biomarker of SLE and lupus nephritis.

The present study developed the formulation of active bionanocomposites films endowed with the abilities of high biodegradability and antimicrobials for active packaging applications. The aim of this work was to prepare poly (lactic acid)/poly (butylene succinate) (PLA/PBS) blended films reinforced with different concentrations of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and 9 % of thymol essential oil (EO) using the casting method. The active films were further evaluated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); as well as mechanical, physical, water vapour permeability (WVP), thermal analysis (TGA), biodegradation, morphological, and antimicrobial (% reduction of bacteria) testing. The tensile strength (TS) of PLA/PBS blend films increased by 12 % with the incorporation of 2 wt% of NFC. The PLA/PBS/NFC with 9 % thymol EO has a good water barrier performance with its tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus was 13.2 MPa, 13.1 %, and 513 MPa respectively. The presence of NFC promoted the disintegration of PLA/PBS films by 70.5 %. These films promoted the antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The study demonstrates that the developed films improved the qualities of chicken fillets and have great potential to be used as active bionanocomposites in food packaging applications.

Salivary gland tumors in children are rare; involvement of accessory salivary glands is exceptional. We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the palate in a child (an 8-year-old girl) addressed by her dentist for discovering a swelling in the palate. Clinical examination revealed a firm, non-tender, nodular swelling in the left hard palate, measuring 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm, situated adjacent to the upper left second molar. Physical examination did not show signs of inflammation or surface ulceration. Oral cavity computed tomography scan did not show bone lysis. The tumor was removed with negative margins. No recurrence was noted. We aim to describe the clinical, radiological features, as well as the management of this rare localization of pleomorphic adenoma.

Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is associated with cardiovascular diseases. Mean platelet volume has emerged as a marker of prothrombotic conditions and cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the mean platelet volume and cardiovascular diseases in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Methods: The medical records of 207 patients were analyzed. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was diagnosed by polygraphy, and patients were classified according to apnea-hypopnea index: control group: individuals with simple snoring (apnea-hypopnea index < 5), mild obstructive sleep apnea syndrome group (5 ⩽ apnea-hypopnea index < 15), moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome group (15 ⩽ apnea-hypopnea index < 30), and severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome group (apnea-hypopnea index ⩾ 30). Mean platelet volume was obtained from medical records. Cardiovascular diseases were defined if patients had hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, or arrythmia. The independent predictors related to cardiovascular diseases in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were determined by using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Of the patients, 175 were included in the analysis. Sixty-three (36%) were males and 112 (64%) were females. The mean age was 51.85 ± 11 years. There were, 26 (14.9%), 53 (30.3%), 38 (21.7%), and 58 (33.1%) participants in the simple snoring, mild, moderate, and severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome groups, respectively. Cardiovascular diseases were significantly different between the four groups (p = 0.014). Mean platelet volume in severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome group was significantly higher than in mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome group and simple snoring group (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a positive correlation between mean platelet volume levels and apnea-hypopnea index (r = 0.424; p < 0.001). The independent predictors of cardiovascular diseases in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were age (p < 0.001; odds ratio = 1.134; confidence interval: 1.072-1.2), body mass index (p = 0.012; odds ratio: 1.105; confidence interval: 1.022-1.194), and mean platelet volume (p < 0.001; odds ratio: 2.092; confidence interval: 1.386-3.158). Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that there is an association between mean platelet volume levels and cardiovascular diseases in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
