BACKGROUND: This crossover clinical study aimed to evaluate and compare masticatory performance and patient satisfaction for patients rehabilitated with conventional heat-cured acrylic resin and 3D-printed mandibular implant overdentures retained with bar attachment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen completely edentulous healthy participants received new conventional dentures. In the mandible, four interforaminal implants were inserted. Following the stage of osseointegration, the bar was constructed in a trapezoidal configuration. Each patient randomly received the following overdentures using a crossover design: (1) conventional heat-cured acrylic resin overdenture and (2) 3D-printed overdenture (developed by scanning of mandibular conventional overdenture). The masticatory performance was assessed by conducting a two-colour mixing ability test at 5, 10, 20, 30, and 50 masticatory cycles. Moreover, the McGill Denture Satisfaction Questionnaire (MDSQ) was employed to assess patient satisfaction. Evaluation was performed after 3 months of using each overdenture. Paired sample t tests were used to compare the masticatory performance and MDSQ scores of patients for both prostheses. RESULTS: No significant difference in masticatory performance was reported between the two types of overdentures. Regarding patient satisfaction, only the esthetic aspect was significantly better for conventionally processed overdentures than for printed overdentures. Insignificant differences were observed regarding other MDSQ items between the two overdentures. CONCLUSION: Within this clinical study, 3D-printed implant overdentures showed promising results in terms of chewing efficiency and patient satisfaction compared to conventionally fabricated implant overdentures. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the interobserver agreement for the features of natal cleft pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and propose a standardized checklist for reporting PSD on MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty MRI studies of 39 discrete patients with PSD were retrospectively evaluated by five independent radiologists using a standardized checklist. Fleiss' Kappa (k) coefficients of agreement were used to test the agreement between categorical variables. The MRI features of the natal cleft sepsis associated with PSD were classified into four main categories: morphology, branching and extensions, external skin openings, and the relationship of the PSD to the coccyx. A survey was created and disseminated online among general surgeons who treat patients with PSD to assess the relevance of the MRI features proposed in the standardized checklist. RESULTS: The overall agreement regarding the identification of morphology of the natal cleft sepsis was moderate (k = 0.59). Lateral and caudal extensions interobserver agreement was substantial (k = 0.64 and 0.71, respectively). However, the overall agreement regarding the individual parts of anal sphincter involved was moderate (k = 0.47). Substantial interobserver agreement was found in assessing the proximity of the PSD to the coccyx (k = 0.62). CONCLUSION: Preoperative MRI can delineate the extensions and branching of PSD with substantial agreement. MRI is superior in describing the deep extensions of PSD with better reliability than assessing the number and locations of the external openings. Expert consensus agreement is needed to establish the MRI features necessary for optimal reporting of PSD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: MRI can offer valuable information about the extent of sepsis associated with pilonidal sinus disease, particularly in cases with involvement of critical anatomical structures such as the coccyx and anal triangle. MRI can potentially contribute to more accurate patient stratification and surgical planning. KEY POINTS: • The interobserver agreement for assessing PSD's lateral and caudal extension on MRI is substantial. • MRI can describe deep extensions and branching of PSD with superior reliability than assessing the number and site of external openings. • Reporting the relationship between natal cleft sepsis in PSD and the anal region may influence the surgical approach and postoperative healing.

AIM: The aim of this present study was to compare two placement designs of four implants used to support a telescopic mandibular overdenture regarding the marginal bone height changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each patient received four implants. Two anterior implants were installed vertically in the canine area. Patients were randomized into two groups according to the direction of posterior implants installed in the premolar area. Group I: where the implants were installed vertically parallel to the anterior implants and group II: where the implants were installed 30º distally. The implants were delayed loaded with a telescopic mandibular overdenture. The implant's marginal bone changes were evaluated after 6 and 12 months of overdenture insertion. RESULTS: Mean marginal bone loss of anterior implants showed a statistically significant difference between both groups. The vertically parallel posterior implants in group I showed statistically significant higher marginal bone loss than posterior implants in group II after follow-up periods. The 30º distally tilted posterior implants maintained the implant marginal bone after 12 months of overdenture insertion. CONCLUSION: Rehabilitation of the edentulous mandible with telescopic overdenture supported by four parallel implants is a promising successful treatment option. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Tilting the posterior implants will improve the anteroposterior spread that in turn increases the support and the survival rate of the implants. Also, using this technique gives us an opportunity to use fewer implants.

BACKGROUND: A thorough understanding of root and canal anatomy is crucial for successful root canal treatment outcomes. This systematic review aims to explore the published micro-CT studies investigated the anatomy of root and canal system in permanent mandibular first molars. METHOD: An electronic search was performed on Web of science, PubMed, and Scopus. Micro-CT journal studies investigated the root and canal anatomy of permanent double-rooted mandibular first molars were included. Data on study characteristics, objectives of interest, specifications of the studies, and micro-CT specifications were extracted. Risk of bias assessment (ROB) of the included studies was performed using Anatomical Quality Assessment (AQUA) tool. The extracted data were presented in tables and figures to present and synthesise the results. A meta-analysis was performed for the studies related to the prevalence of Vertucci's canal configurations, middle mesial canal (MMC) configurations, and Fan's isthmus types. RESULTS: Amongst 1358 identified studies, thirty met the inclusion criteria. In terms of the objectives, the selected studies showed high anatomical variability in mandibular first molars. Twenty-two (73%), 25 (83%), and 12 (40%) of the studies reported the population/ethnicity, micro-CT specifications, and ethical approval, respectively. 28 (93%) studies did not disclose the method of sample size estimation. In only 6 (20%) of the studies, the authors had calibrated the assessment approaches. Mostly, a potential ROB was reported in domain 1 (objective(s) and subject characteristics) and domain 3 (methodology characterization). Whilst, low risk was reported in domains 2 (study design), 4 (descriptive anatomy), and 5 (reporting of results). The overall ROB was reported to be ''moderate'' in the vast majority of the studies (27/30). Meta-analysis results showed high levels of heterogeneity among the studies related to MMCs (I2 = 86%) and Fan's isthmus (I2 = 87%). As for the root canal configuration, pooled prevalence showed that Vertucci type IV and type I were the most prevalent in mesial and distal root canals, respectively. CONCLUSION: Based on moderate risk of bias level of evidence, micro-CT studies have shown wide range of qualitative and quantitative data presentations of the roots and canals in mandibular first molars. The feeling of self-movement that occurs in the absence of physical motion is often referred to as vection, which is commonly exemplified using the train illusion analogy (TIA). Limited research exists on whether the TIA accurately exemplifies the experience of vection in virtual environments (VEs). Few studies complemented their vection research with participants' qualitative feedback or by recording physiological responses, and most studies used stimuli that contextually differed from the TIA. We investigated whether vection is experienced differently in a VE replicating the TIA compared to a VE depicting optic flow by recording subjective and physiological responses. Additionally, we explored participants' experience through an open question survey. We expected the TIA environment to induce enhanced vection compared to the optic flow environment. Twenty-nine participants were visually and audibly immersed in VEs that either depicted optic flow or replicated the TIA. Results showed optic flow elicited more compelling vection than the TIA environment and no consistent physiological correlates to vection were identified. The post-experiment survey revealed discrepancies between participants' quantitative and qualitative feedback. Although the dynamic content may outweigh the ecological relevance of the stimuli, it was concluded that more qualitative research is needed to understand participants' vection experience in VEs.

This systematic review evaluated the effects of nano-sized cement particles on the properties of calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs). Using defined keywords, a literature search was conducted to identify studies that investigated properties of nano-calcium silicate-based cements (NCSCs). A total of 17 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Results indicated that NCSC formulations have favourable physical (setting time, pH and solubility), mechanical (push out bond strength, compressive strength and indentation hardness) and biological (bone regeneration and foreign body reaction) properties compared with commonly used CSCs. However, the characterization and verification for the nano-particle size of NCSCs were deficient in some studies. Furthermore, the nanosizing was not limited to the cement particles and a number of additives were present. In conclusion, the evidence available for the properties of CSC particles in the nano-range is deficient-such properties could be a result of additives which may have enhanced the properties of the material.

The mismatch in signals perceived by the vestibular and visual systems to the brain, also referred to as motion sickness syndrome, has been diagnosed as a challenging condition with no clear mechanism. Motion sickness causes undesirable symptoms during travel and in virtual environments that affect people negatively. Treatments are directed toward reducing conflicting sensory inputs, accelerating the process of adaptation, and controlling nausea and vomiting. The long-term use of current medications is often hindered by their various side effects. Hence, this review aims to identify non-pharmacological strategies that can be employed to reduce or prevent motion sickness in both real and virtual environments. Research suggests that activation of the parasympathetic nervous system using pleasant music and diaphragmatic breathing can help alleviate symptoms of motion sickness. Certain micronutrients such as hesperidin, menthol, vitamin C, and gingerol were shown to have a positive impact on alleviating motion sickness. However, the effects of macronutrients are more complex and can be influenced by factors such as the food matrix and composition. Herbal dietary formulations such as Tianxian and Tamzin were shown to be as effective as medications. Therefore, nutritional interventions along with behavioral countermeasures could be considered as inexpensive and simple approaches to mitigate motion sickness. Finally, we discussed possible mechanisms underlying these interventions, the most significant limitations, research gaps, and future research directions for motion sickness.

Background: Accurate and repeatable measurement of high-grade glioma (HGG) enhancing (Enh.) and T2/FLAIR hyperintensity/edema (Ed.) is required for monitoring treatment response. 3D measurements can be used to inform the modified Response Assessment in Neuro-oncology criteria. We aim to develop an HGG volumetric measurement and visualization AI algorithm that is generalizable and repeatable. Methods: A single 3D-Convoluted Neural Network, NS-HGlio, to analyze HGG on MRIs using 5-fold cross validation was developed using retrospective (557 MRIs), multicentre (38 sites) and multivendor (32 scanners) dataset divided into training (70%), validation (20%), and testing (10%). Six neuroradiologists created the ground truth (GT). Additional Internal validation (IV, three institutions) using 70 MRIs, and External validation (EV, single institution) using 40 MRIs through measuring the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of Enh., Ed. ,and Enh. + Ed. (WholeLesion/WL) tumor tissue and repeatability testing on 14 subjects from the TCIA MGH-QIN-GBM dataset using volume correlations between timepoints were performed. Results: IV Preoperative median DSC Enh. 0.89 (SD 0.11), Ed. 0.88 (0.28), WL 0.88 (0.11). EV Preoperative median DSC Enh. 0.82 (0.09), Ed. 0.83 (0.11), WL 0.86 (0.06). IV Postoperative median DSC Enh. 0.77 (SD 0.20), Ed 0.78. (SD 0.09), WL 0.78 (SD 0.11). EV Postoperative median DSC Enh. 0.75 (0.21), Ed 0.74 (0.12), WL 0.79 (0.07). Repeatability testing; Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.95 Enh. and 0.92 Ed. Conclusion: NS-HGlio is accurate, repeatable, and generalizable. The output can be used for visualization, documentation, treatment response monitoring, radiation planning, intra-operative targeting, and estimation of Residual Tumor Volume among others.

The TGMD (i.e., Test of Gross Motor Development) has been considered as one of the gold standards of assessment tools for analysis of motor competence in children. However, it is rarely used by teachers in schools because the time, resources, and expertise required for one teacher to assess a class of students is prohibitive in most cases. A potential solution may be to automate the testing protocol using objective measures and inertial measurement unit sensors. An accurate method using 17 sensors to capture full body motion profiles and machine learning methods to objectively assess proficiency has been developed; however, feasibility of this method was low. Subsequently, a simplified method using four sensors (i.e., attached to wrists and ankles) was found to be effective, efficient, and potentially highly feasible for use in school settings. For some skills, however, not all skill criteria could be assessed. Additionally, misclassification on occasion, marred results. In the present paper we consider a previous experiment that used wireless motion capture to assess criteria from the TGMD-3. We discuss the advantages alongside the disadvantages of testing motor competence in children using sensors and consider the question-Can a compromise be struck between accuracy and feasibility?

Vection is classically defined as the illusory perception of self-motion induced via visual stimuli. The utility of vection research lies in its potential to enhance simulation fidelity, as measured through presence, and reduce the probability that motion sickness symptoms occur. Studies have shown a multimodal interaction of various sensory systems in facilitating vection, and the utility of co-stimulating some of these sensory systems along with the presentation of visual stimuli have been reviewed. However, a review on the use of tactile stimulation in vection research appears to be missing from literature. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the current methodologies, and outcomes, of tactile stimulation in vection research. We searched for articles through EBSCOHost, Scopus and Web of Science. Studies were included only if they detailed an experiment on the effect of tactile stimulation on vection. Twenty-four studies were obtained and distilled in tabular form. Eighteen studies contained sufficient information to be included in a meta-analysis. We identified that tactile stimulation has mostly been applied in the form of vibrational stimulation to the feet. Furthermore, tactile stimulation is most effective when it is presented in a temporally congruent manner to other sensory cues, whereas tactile stimulation as a unisensory stimulus does not appear to be effective in eliciting vection. We discuss the need for more qualitative research to reduce methodological inhomogeneities and recommend future research in tactile-mediated vection to investigate stimulation to the torso and investigate the use of forces as a tactile stimulus.

OBJECTIVES: To assess related studies and discuss the clinical implications of endodontic access cavity (AC) designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of studies comparing the fracture resistance and/or endodontic outcomes between different AC designs was conducted in two electronic search databases (PubMed and Web of Science) following the PRISMA guidelines. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed. Meta-analyses were undertaken for fracture resistance and root canal detection, with the level of significance set at 0.05 (P = 0.05). RESULTS: A total of 33 articles were included in this systematic review. The global evaluation of the risk of bias in the included studies was assessed as moderate, and the level of evidence was rated as low. Four types of AC designs were categorized: traditional (TradAC), conservative (ConsAC), ultraconservative (UltraAC), and truss (TrussAC). Their impact on fracture resistance, cleaning/disinfection, procedural errors, root canal detection, treatment time, apical debris extrusion, and root canal filling was discussed. Meta-analysis showed that compared to TradAC, (i) there is a significant higher fracture resistance of teeth with ConsAC, TrussAC, or ConsAC/TrussAC when all marginal ridges are preserved (P < 0.05), (ii) there is no significant effect of the type of AC on the fracture resistance of teeth when one or two marginal ridges are lost (P > 0.05), and (iii) there is a significantly higher risk of undetected canals with ConsAC if not assisted by dental operating microscope and ultrasonic troughing (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Decreasing the AC extent does not necessarily present mechanical and biological advantages especially when one or more surfaces of the tooth structure are lost. To date, the evidence available does not support the application of TrussAC. UltraAC might be applied in limited occasions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Maintaining the extent of AC design as small as practical without jeopardizing the root canal treatment quality remains a pragmatic recommendation. Different criteria can guide the practitioner for the optimal extent of AC outline form which varies from case to case.

The study purpose was to use Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) to objectively assess children's motor competence in seven movement skills. Fourteen children aged from seven to 12 years (M = 9.64) participated. Children were asked to perform up to 10 trials of each skill. Children performed the skills, which were captured by XSENS MVN Awinda wireless motion capture, and video. Skills were assessed from video as per the criteria from the Test of Gross Motor Development 3. Initially, 17 IMU sensors were used for signal processing, but this was restricted to four sensors (wrists and ankles) to be more feasible for field assessment. Results of the signal testing against its modelled "Good" signal, showed the skip was classified correctly each time, as was the sidestep. Accuracy % rates for each skill were: kick (95.2), catch (95.0), throw (80.5), jump (78.9), and hop (76.9). Using signal processing-based methods via four sensors was a reliable and feasible way to assess seven motor skills in children. This approach means monitoring and assessment of children's skills can be objective, which will potentially reduce the time involved in motor skill assessment and analysis for research, clinical, sport and education purposes.

This systematic review assessed the effect of different root canal instrumentation systems on endotoxin reduction from the root canal system. The literature search was conducted in two electronic databases (PubMed and Scopus) using specific key words. The search strategy followed the PRISMA guidelines. Qualitative synthesis and quantitative synthesis of the data were performed and data interpretation was done based on the guidelines in the Cochrane Handbook. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane criteria. The initial search yielded 600 citations, of which three papers met the criteria for inclusion in this review. Studies showed a significant reduction in endotoxin following rotary and reciprocating instrumentation, with no significant differences between them. The meta-analysis showed no statistical significant difference between reciprocation and rotary files (P > 0.05). In conclusion, the instrumentation techniques compared in this review decrease endotoxin content from root canals, with no significant difference between them.

Driving simulators are effective tools for training, virtual prototyping, and safety assessment which can minimize the cost and maximize road safety. Despite the aim of a realistic motion generation for the impression of real-world driving, motion simulators are bound in a limited workspace. Motion cueing algorithms (MCAs) aim to plan an acceptable motion feeling for drivers, without infringing the simulated boundaries. Recently, model predictive control (MPC) has been widely used in MCAs; however, the tuning process for finding the best weights of the MPC optimization is still a challenge. As there are several objectives for the optimization without any standard weighting for solution evaluations, a nonbiased scalarization of solutions for the purpose of comparison is impossible. In this paper, a clear method for obtaining the best MPC weighting has been proposed. This method searches for the best tune of MPC cost function weights, reduces the user burden for weight tuning while receiving feedback from the user satisfaction. The MPC-based MCA weights are optimized using a multiobjective genetic algorithm (GA) considering objectives, such as minimization of motion inputs (linear acceleration and angular velocity), input rates, output displacements and the sensed motion errors. Any process based on trial-and-error has been omitted. The adjusted weights have to satisfy a set of predefined conditions related to maximum tolerated error and maximum displacement. The obtained Pareto-front is used for decision making via an interactive GA (IGA), aiming for maximization of the decision maker's satisfaction. A Web interface is developed to interact with the IGA and to influence the region of searching. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed method compared with the previous empirical tuning method. The sensed motion error is minimized using the proposed method and with the same available workspace, a more realistic motion can be rendered to the driver.

The human vestibular system is a sensory and equilibrium system that manages and controls the human sense of balance and movement. It is the main sensor humans use to perceive rotational and linear motions. Determining an accurate mathematical model of the human vestibular system is significant for research pertaining to motion perception, as the quality and effectiveness of the motion cueing algorithm (MCA) directly depends on the mathematical model used in its design. This paper describes the history and analyses the development process of mathematical semicircular canal models. The aim of this review is to determine the most consistent and reliable mathematical semicircular canal models that agree with experimental results and theoretical analyses, and offer reliable approximations for the semicircular canal functions based on the existing studies. Selecting and formulating accurate mathematical models of semicircular canals are essential for implementation into the MCA and for ensuring effective human motion perception modeling.

The vestibular system, which consists of semicircular canals and otolith, are the main sensors mammals use to perceive rotational and linear motions. Identifying the most suitable and consistent mathematical model of the vestibular system is important for research related to driving perception. An appropriate vestibular model is essential for implementation of the Motion Cueing Algorithm (MCA) for motion simulation purposes, because the quality of the MCA is directly dependent on the vestibular model used. In this review, the history and development process of otolith models are presented and analyzed. The otolith organs can detect linear acceleration and transmit information about sensed applied specific forces on the human body. The main purpose of this review is to determine the appropriate otolith models that agree with theoretical analyses and experimental results as well as provide reliable estimation for the vestibular system functions. Formulating and selecting the most appropriate mathematical model of the vestibular system is important to ensure successful human perception modelling and simulation when implementing the model into the MCA for motion analysis.

Recently effective connectivity studies have gained significant attention among the neuroscience community as Electroencephalography (EEG) data with a high time resolution can give us a wider understanding of the information flow within the brain. Among other tools used in effective connectivity analysis Granger Causality (GC) has found a prominent place. The GC analysis, based on strictly causal multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) models does not account for the instantaneous interactions among the sources. If instantaneous interactions are present, GC based on strictly causal MVAR will lead to erroneous conclusions on the underlying information flow. Thus, the work presented in this paper applies an extended MVAR (eMVAR) model that accounts for the zero lag interactions. We propose a constrained adaptive Kalman filter (CAKF) approach for the eMVAR model identification and demonstrate that this approach performs better than the short time windowing-based adaptive estimation when applied to information flow analysis.

Hemodynamic models have a high potential in application to understanding the functional differences of the brain. However, full system identification with respect to model fitting to actual functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data is practically difficult and is still an active area of research. We present a simulation based Bayesian approach for nonlinear model based analysis of the fMRI data. The idea is to do a joint state and parameter estimation within a general filtering framework. One advantage of using Bayesian methods is that they provide a complete description of the posterior distribution, not just a single point estimate. We use an Auxiliary Particle Filter adjoined with a kernel smoothing approach to address this joint estimation problem.
