RESUMO
In this research, the use of a three-component nanocomposite of graphene oxide-methyl methacrylate and copper(II) oxide (PMMA-GO-CuO) was investigated. The aim of synthesizing this nanocomposite is to removal dye pollutants, specifically methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), which are commonly used in dyeing industries, through adsorption. The study focuses on creating GO-CuO and PMMA-GO-CuO nanocomposites as effective adsorbents. A simple and quick method led to the development of the PMMA-GO-CuO nanocomposite, which shows enhanced physical and chemical properties. Key materials include graphene oxide, methyl methacrylate, and copper(II) oxide nanoparticles. Characterization techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, and TGA were used to analyze the nanocomposite. Results indicate that dye adsorption is more effective at lower pH levels, suggesting that the PMMA-GO-CuO nanocomposite can efficiently remove dyes from industrial wastewater. The experimental data showed that the Langmuir isotherm model accurately represented the equilibrium adsorption, with maximum capacities of 285.71 mg g-1 for methylene blue and 256.41 mg g-1 for methyl orange, indicating a single layer of adsorption. The kinetics followed a pseudo-second order model, suggesting that the adsorption process involves chemical bonding. Additionally, thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) indicated that the adsorption is spontaneous. The adsorption mechanism involves hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, and electrostatic interactions. This study investigates how factors like pH, temperature, contact time, and dye concentration affect the adsorption of methyl orange and methylene blue dyes. A PMMA-GO-CuO nanocomposite was used, achieving 84% removal of MB and 35% removal of MO from industrial wastewater. This study highlights the promising potential of PMMA-GO-CuO nanocomposite as an effective material for the removal of dye pollutants from industrial wastewater. The results showed that the graphene oxide in the composite is effective for removing cationic dyes due to its negative charge. Further research will focus on the optimization of the synthesis process with the aim of achieving competitive performance of this nanocomposite on a large scale. These findings not only advance the field of nanocomposite materials but also provide a practical solution to an important environmental issue, demonstrating the innovation of the present study in the literature.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: In this manuscript, we report a case of tacrolimus-associated hepatotoxicity in a kidney transplant recipient. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, a 56 years old Arab male patient who received a kidney transplant presented with icterus, weakness, and lethargy two weeks after transplantation and tacrolimus initiation. In laboratory analysis hyperbilirubinemia and a rise in hepatic enzymes were observed. All possible causes of hepatotoxicity were examined. The panel for infectious causes was negative. Drug-induced liver injury was diagnosed. The patient's immunosuppressive regimen was changed to a cyclosporine-based regimen and after this change bilirubin and hepatic enzymes decreased and the patient was discharged without signs and symptoms of hepatitis. CONCLUSION: It seems that the patient's hyperbilirubinemia was due to tacrolimus, and the patient's bilirubin decreased after stopping tacrolimus.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia is associated with the coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines. It has been reported by vector-based vaccines. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report about vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia in whole-virus vaccines. We are presenting the first case of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia with this type of vaccine. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old male Caucasian patient with complaints of severe abdominal, low back, and lower extremity pain presented to the medical center. He received the first dose of the Sinopharm (HB02) vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 10 days before hospital attendance. In the laboratory examination, decreased platelet count and increased D-dimer were observed. During hospital admission, the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism was reached. He received vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia therapy consisting of intravenous immune globulin and direct oral anticoagulant. Platelet count increased and he was discharged after 1 month. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the possibility of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia occurrence by whole-virus coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines. Compared with vector-based vaccines, this phenomenon is rare for whole-virus vaccines. More studies on this type of vaccine regarding thrombotic thrombocytopenia should be considered.

Curcumin (CUR) is among the most natural and effective antitumor drugs for cancer treatment. These drugs have low solubility and short half-lives that reduce their effectiveness in drug release systems. Herein, a hydrogel nanocarrier containing chitosan (CS), alumina (γ-Al2O3), and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) was prepared by the water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double nanoemulsion method. DLS revealed a nanocarrier size of 227 nm, with a zeta potential of -37.8 mV, which corroborates its stability. FE-SEM showed its quasi-spherical shape, FT-IR and XRD confirmed the presence of all the components in the nanocomposite and gave information about the intermolecular interactions between them and the crystalline nature of the nanocarrier, respectively. The drug loading (48 %) and entrapment efficiency (86 %) were higher than those reported previously for other CUR nanocarriers. The drug release profile revealed a controlled and stable release, and a pH-sensitive behavior, with faster CUR release in an acid environment. The breast cancer cell line was examined by cytotoxicity and cell apoptosis analyses. The results showed that the slow release over time and the programmed cell death were due to interactions between CUR and the nanocarrier. Considering the results obtained herein, CS/γAl2O3/CQDs/CUR can be considered as a promising new nanosystem for tumor treatment.
RESUMO
A bio-inspired strategy has recently been developed for camouflaging nanocarriers with biomembranes, such as natural cell membranes or subcellular structure-derived membranes. This strategy endows cloaked nanomaterials with improved interfacial properties, superior cell targeting, immune evasion potential, and prolonged duration of systemic circulation. Here, we summarize recent advances in the production and application of exosomal membrane-coated nanomaterials. The structure, properties, and manner in which exosomes communicate with cells are first reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of the types of exosomes and their fabrication methods. We then discuss the applications of biomimetic exosomes and membrane-cloaked nanocarriers in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, imaging, and the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Finally, we appraise the current challenges associated with the clinical translation of biomimetic exosomal membrane-surface-engineered nanovehicles and evaluate the future of this technology.

This research aimed to evaluate the clinical features and computed tomography (CT) scans associated with poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). A total of 351 COVID-19 patients (100 AKI, 251 non-AKI) hospitalized at Imam Hossein Teaching Hospital affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences were included. To investigate the factors associated with in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients developing AKI, COX univariate and multivariate regression models were applied after controlling other confounding variables. C-reactive protein CRP, lactate, and procalcitonin levels were significantly higher in AKI patients than in non-AKI patients (P < .05). In addition, AKI patients had higher frequencies of lymphopenia and leukocytosis (P < .05). The troponin levels and WBC were the most significant factors for predicting mortality in patients with AKI. Our findings showed that AKI per se is much more important than any other prognostic factor affecting non-AKI patients. However, AKI patients with higher CRP, PCT, and lactate levels had a poor prognosis. DOI: 10.52547/ijkd.7241.

In this research, Hydroxyethyl cellulose - graphene oxide HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn mole ratio (2:1) nanocomposite as adsorbents were fabricated by crosslinking ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) to study the thermodynamic, kinetic and isotherm of doxycycline antibiotic adsorption. The morphology and structure of the adsorbents were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (FE-SEM- EDX), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The adsorption behavior of doxycycline (DOX) was studied with different parameters including doxycycline concentration, pH, the dose of adsorbent (HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn, mole ratio (2:1)), contact time, and temperature. The optimal conditions for the removal of DOX are pH = 3.0, contact time 100 min, and 20 min for HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn mole ratio (2:1). The removal percentage for HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn mole ratio (2:1) was 97% and 95.5%, respectively. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms such as the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models were analyzed according to the experimental data. Also, four adsorption kinetics were investigated for removing DOX. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models provided the best fit for experimental data for HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn mole ratio (2:1). Thermodynamic data showed that negative values of Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) and the negative value of enthalpy (ΔH°) of the adsorption process for adsorbents. It means that DOX removal was a spontaneous and exothermic reaction.

Tetracycline (TC) as an antibiotic with high consumption causes the spread of contamination in an aqueous solution. In recent decades, antibiotics are the main cause of hindering the growth of microorganisms. Also, they are one of the important groups of pharmaceuticals with extensive usage in human and veterinary medicine. In the first work of its kind, we used a suitable adsorbent of biodegradable hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) with graphene oxide (GO) by crosslinking ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and the Fe/Zn with mole ratio 1:1 bimetallic nanoparticles with HEC-GO support. The materials were identified using FTIR, FE-SEM, EDX, TEM, and TG- DSC analyses. The factors affecting the adsorption process (contact time, initial concentration of TC, solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and reaction temperature) were evaluated in a series of batch systems. The adsorption data showed that the high adsorption capacity was obtained on the HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn (mole ratio 1:1) nanocomposites at pH 3. Also, the contact time as the main factor affecting the adsorption process by adsorbents was investigated and the best contact time was 100 and 20 min. The TC removal percentages of both adsorbents were 85% and 95% for HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity for TC was evaluated by the isotherm models. The experimental data fitted well with the Langmuir model. In addition, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and the Elovich models were applied to kinetic data. The data indicated that TC adsorption on HEC-GO and HEC-GO/Fe-Zn (mole ratio 1:1) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters implied that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. Nano-biocomposite (HEC-GO/Fe-Zn) can be used as an adsorbent to remove water pollutants.

RESUMO
Herein, with using graphene oxide (GO), agar and ZnO NPs was synthesized as nanocomposite to removal of dyes contaminants from food industry effluents. Synthesis and characterization of the nanocomposite adsorbent were carried out by FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDX and DLS analyses. The effects of various parameters such as pH, initial dye concentration, contact time and temperature on the removal of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) as azo dyes were investigated. The used nanocomposite can be effective in the adsorption of dyes due to their different functional groups. The Freundlich and Langmuir models were used to investigate the isotherm of contaminants removal. The results showed that the removal of methylene blue and methyl orange dyes followed the Freundlich isotherm, and the values of the R2 correlation coefficient for agar/GO, and agar/GO/ZnO nanocomposites for MB dye was 0.9640 and 0.9977, respectively, and for dye MO, 0.9918 and 0.9683, respectively. The maximum removal percentages for MB and MO dyes were 88% and 91%, respectively.

Non-healing wounds have long been the subject of scientific and clinical investigations. Despite breakthroughs in understanding the biology of delayed wound healing, only limited advances have been made in properly treating wounds. Recently, research into nucleic acids (NAs) such as small-interfering RNA (siRNA), microRNA (miRNA), plasmid DNA (pDNA), aptamers, and antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) has resulted in the development of a latest therapeutic strategy for wound healing. In this regard, dendrimers, scaffolds, lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, hydrogels, and metal nanoparticles have all been explored as NA delivery techniques. However, the translational possibility of NA remains a substantial barrier. As a result, different NAs must be identified, and their distribution method must be optimized. This review explores the role of NA-based therapeutics in various stages of wound healing and provides an update on the most recent findings in the development of NA-based nanomedicine and biomaterials, which may offer the potential for the invention of novel therapies for this long-term condition. Further, the challenges and potential for miRNA-based techniques to be translated into clinical applications are also highlighted.

Herein, the porous metal-organic framework (MIL-88B: Materials Institute Lavoisier) was synthesized and identified by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), EDS (Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy), and XRD (X-ray powder diffraction) analyses. Then MIL-88B was modified using 3-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane and presented as NH2-MIL-88B. The synthesized materials were used to separate direct red dye 23 (DR23) as an organic contaminant from water. The effect of various important factors such as the amount of adsorbent, initial concentration of contaminants, and pH was investigated. The results showed that the modified adsorbent (NH2-MIL-88B) had a higher adsorption capacity than the row adsorbent (MIL-88B). The amount of dye adsorption is high at lower pH values. The percentage of DR23 dye removal was complete under optimal conditions. Increasing the amount of adsorbent (0.001-0.003 g) and decreasing the pH (2.1-8.1) increases the percentage of dye removal and increasing the concentration of contaminant (50-125 mg/L) reduces the dye removal in the process. Isotherm data showed that the adsorption process followed the Langmuir model. Also, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models were used to investigate the adsorption kinetics. Dye adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with correlation coefficient (0.99 <). The results showed that the modified adsorbent could be used as a suitable adsorbent with a high adsorption capacity for dye removal from water.

Vanillin is an organic compound that not only acts as a flavoring and fragrance enhancer in some foods, but also can have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-depressant effects. Nevertheless, its excessive use can be associated with side effects on human health. Consequently, there is a need to achieve a rapid vanillin determination approach to enhance food safety. The diversity and high sensitivity of analytical approaches has led researchers to use more advanced and efficient methods providing quantitative and qualitative outcomes in complex matrices. Among these, prominent attention has been drawn to electrochemical sensors for reasons such as reliability, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, portability, selectivity, and ease of operation, especially for the determination of vanillin. Nanomaterials are a good candidate for sensor construction due to their commendable physicochemical attributes. Some advanced nanostructures with promising platforms for high-sensitivity, highly selective, and long-lasting electrochemical sensors include graphene (Gr) and its derivatives, graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), metal nanoparticles, metal organic frameworks, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and quantum dots. Study about sizes, dimensions, and morphologies of nanomaterials makes strong candidates for improving sensitivity or selectivity according to electrocatalytic abilities. The low LOD and wide linear range of samples demonstrated an excellent catalytic performance towards the vanillin oxidation. Some investigations have reported the synergistic effects like great conductivity of carbon nanomaterials which improved the electrocatalytic performance of nanocomposites which demonstrated the estimable sensitivity of nanomaterial-supported electrochemical sensors for determination of vanillin concentrations. The sensors which have reported have a commendable response to practical potential and evaluated in biscuit, pudding powder, chocolate, custard specimens and etc. sensitivity, stability, reproducibility and repeatability of suggested sensor were investigated. The present review article scrutinizes recent advances in the fabrication of nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors to detect vanillin in various food matrices.

In this study, graphene oxide and amine graphene were studied by binding to dextrin and zirconium oxide nanoparticles as adsorbent nanocomposites to the removal of dye. Identification and characterization of the synthesized materials were examined using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and BET analyses. Adsorption tests between adsorbents and green malachite (MG) dye solution for the synthesized nanocomposites were performed by considering parameters such as contact time, solution pH, and adsorbent dosage. The data indicated that dye removal increased with increasing the amount of adsorbent dosage. Increased dye removal by increasing the adsorbent dosage can be attributed to the increase of availability of the number of active sites. The active adsorption sites are saturated during the adsorption process, by the molecules of the adsorbate and filled over time. The results showed that the synthesized bio-composite had malachite green removal ability from aqueous media.

Introduction: Mucormycosis as a rare but life-threatening disease with 46-96% mortality, which challenged the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to compare the characteristics of mucormycosis between cases with and without COVID-19. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in two referral hospitals, Imam Hossein and Labbafinezhad Hospitals, Tehran, Iran, between 21 March to 21 December 2021. Data related to all hospitalized adults subject with the diagnosis of mucormycosis during the study period was collected from patients' profiles and they were divided into two groups of with and without COVID-19 based on the results of real time PCR. Then demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings as well as outcomes were compared between the two groups. Results: 64 patients with the mean age of 53.40±10.32 (range: 33-74) years were studied (53.1% male). Forty-three (67.2%) out of the 64 subjects had a positive COVID-19 PCR test. The two groups had significant differences regarding some symptoms (cough (p < 0.001), shortness of breath (p = 0.006)), acute presentation (p = 0.027), using immunosuppressive (p = 0.013), using corticosteroid (p < 0.001), and outcomes (mortality (p = 0.018), need for intubation (p < 0.001)). 22 (34.3%) patients expired during hospital admission. Univariate analysis showed the association of in-hospital mortality with need for ventilation (p < 0.001), sinus involvement (p = 0.040), recent use of dexamethasone (p = 0.011), confirmed COVID-19 disease (p = 0.025), mean body mass index (BMI) (p =0.035), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) (p = 0.022), and median of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (p =0.034). Based on the multivariate model, confirmed COVID-19 disease (OR = 5.01; 95% CI: 1.14-22.00; p = 0.033) and recent use of dexamethasone (OR= 4.08, 95% CI: 1.05-15.84, p = 0.042) were independent predictors of mortality in this series. Conclusion: The mucormycosis cases with concomitant COVID-19 disease had higher frequency of cough and shortness of breath, higher frequency of acute presentation, higher need for immunosuppressive, corticosteroid, and ventilator support, and higher mortality rate. The two groups were the same regarding age, gender, BMI, risk factors, underlying diseases, symptoms, and sites of involvement.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Leukopenia, a rare adverse effect of Fingolimod therapy, paves the way for opportunistic infections. In this study, we reported rare fingolimod associated cryptococcal meningitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old woman with RRMS was referred to the emergency department. The patient's major complaints were headache, fever, weakness, and progressive loss of consciousness within the last two days prior to the referral. The patient had a history of hospitalization due to RRMS [two times]. In the second hospitalization, interferon Beta-1a was replaced with Fingolimod. Using polymerase chain reaction, Cryptococcus neoformans was detected in CSF. Liposomal amphotericin B and fluconazole [800 mg per day] were started. Six weeks later, the patient was discharged without any major complaints. CONCLUSION: Albeit fingolimod associated cryptococcal meningitis is a rare event, Fingolimod therapy in patients with MS should be performed cautiously. Regular follow-ups may give rise to a timely diagnosis of probable fingolimod associated cryptococcal meningitis. Fingolimod therapy can lead to lymphocytopenia and various infections. We, therefore, suggest that intermittent blood lymphocyte counts as well as monitoring of clinical manifestations among MS patients treated with Fingolimod to avoid additional neurological and physical disabilities in these patients.

Developing new and efficient technologies for environmental remediation is becoming significant due to the increase in global concerns such as climate change, severe epidemics, and energy crises. Air pollution, primarily due to increased levels of H2S, SOx, NH3, NOx, CO, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, has a significant impact on public health, and exhaust gases harm the natural sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon cycles. Similarly, wastewater discharged to the environment with metal ions, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, dyes, and aromatics/organic compounds is a risk for health since it may lead to an outbreak of waterborne pathogens and increase the exposure to endocrine-disrupting agents. Therefore, developing new and efficient air and water quality management systems is critical. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel materials for which the main application areas include gas storage and separation, water harvesting from the atmosphere, chemical sensing, power storage, drug delivery, and food preservation. Due to their versatile structural motifs that can be modified during synthesis, MOFs also have a great promise for green applications including air and water pollution remediation. The motivation to use MOFs for environmental applications prompted the modification of their structures via the addition of metal and functional groups, as well as the creation of heterostructures by mixing MOFs with other nanomaterials, to effectively remove hazardous contaminants from wastewater and the atmosphere. In this review, we focus on the state-of-the-art environmental applications of MOFs, particularly for water treatment and air pollution, by highlighting the groundbreaking studies in which MOFs have been used as adsorbents, membranes, and photocatalysts for the abatement of air and water pollution. We finally address the opportunities and challenges for the environmental applications of MOFs.

The release of pharmaceuticals into the environment induces adverse effects on the metabolism of humans and other living species, calling for advanced remediation methods. Conventional removal methods are often non-selective and cause secondary contamination. These issues may be partly solved by the use of recently-developped adsorbents such as molecularly imprinted polymers. Here we review the synthesis and application of molecularly imprinted polymers for removing pharmaceuticals in water. Molecularly imprinted polymers are synthesized via several multiple-step polymerization methods. Molecularly imprinted polymers are potent adsorbents at the laboratory scale, yet their efficiency is limited by template leakage and polymer quality. Adsorption performance of multi-templated molecularly imprinted polymers depends on the design of wastewater treatment plants, pharmaceutical consumption patterns and the population serviced by these wastewater treatment plants.
RESUMO
The poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based nanoparticle was synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization method and then post modified with Calixarene using (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane organo-silane as a linker after OH-treatment. The prepared structure was applied for efficient adsorption of Vanadium ions in the aqueous solution after characterization by FT-IR, SEM, TEM, DLS, and EDX. Additional investigations discovered that the prepared adsorbent has a good capacity to adsorb vanadium ions. The effect of key experimental factors was studied to find the optimal point of adsorbent efficiency including the initial concentration of analyte, sorbent dosage, pH of the solution, contact time, and type/quantity of the eluents. It was specified, the maximum adsorption capacity for the synthesized nanoparticles was obtained about 322 mg g-1. The adsorption mechanism was revealed that the model of Langmuir isotherm well-matched compared to the others due to the calculated equilibrium data. Besides, the kinetics of the adsorption process was fitted with pseudo-second-order. Eventually, the prepared adsorbent was successfully applied in vanadium adsorption from real water media.

New developments require innovative ecofriendly materials defined by their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and versatility. For that reason, the scientific society is focused on biopolymers such as chitosan, which is the second most abundant in the world after cellulose. These new materials should show good properties in terms of sustainability, circularity, and energy consumption during industrial applications. The idea is to replace traditional raw materials with new ecofriendly materials which contribute to keeping a high production rate but also reducing its environmental impact and the costs. The chitosan shows interesting and unique properties, thus it can be used for different purposes which contributes to the design and development of sustainable novel materials. This helps in promoting sustainability through the use of chitosan and diverse materials based on it. For example, it is a good sustainable alternative for food packaging or it can be used for sustainable agriculture. The chitosan can also reduce the pollution of other industrial processes such as paper production. This mini review collects some of the most important advances for the sustainable use of chitosan for promoting circular economy. Hence, the present review focuses on different aspects of chitosan from its synthesis to multiple applications.
