RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Myopia has recently emerged as a significant threat to global public health. The high and pathological myopia in children and adolescents could result in irreversible damage to eye tissues and severe impairment of visual function without timely control. Posterior scleral reinforcement (PSR) can effectively control the progression of high myopia by limiting posterior scleral expansion, improving retrobulbar vascular perfusion, thereby stabilizing the axial length and refraction of the eye. Moreover, orthokeratology and low concentrations of atropine are also effective in slowing myopia progression. CASE PRESENTATION: A female child was diagnosed with binocular congenital myopia and amblyopia at the age of 3 and the patient's vision had never been rectified with spectacles at the first consultation. The patient's ophthalmological findings suggested, high refractive error with low best corrected visual acuity, longer axial length beyond the standard level of her age, and fundus examination suggesting posterior scleral staphyloma with weakened hemodynamics of the posterior ciliary artery. Thereby, PSR was performed to improve fundus health and the combination of orthokeratology and 0.01% atropine were performed to control the development of myopia. Following up to 8 years of clinical treatment and observations, the progression of myopia could be well controlled and fundus health was stable. CONCLUSION: In this report, 8-year of clinical observation indicated that PSR could improve choroidal thickness and hemodynamic parameters of the retrobulbar vessels, postoperative orthokeratology combined with 0.01% atropine treatment strategy may be a good choice for myopia control effectively.

RESUMO

Qaidam cattle (CDM) are indigenous breed inhabiting Northwest China. In the present study, we newly sequenced 20 Qaidam cattle to investigate the copy number variants (CNVs) based on the ARS-UMD1.2 reference genome. We generated the CNV region (CNVR) datasets to explore the genomic CNV diversity and population stratification. The other four cattle breeds (Xizang cattle, XZ; Kazakh cattle, HSK; Mongolian cattle, MG; and Yanbian cattle, YB) from the regions of North China embracing 43 genomic sequences were collected and are distinguished from each of the other diverse populations by deletions and duplications. We also observed that the number of duplications was significantly more than deletions in the genome, which may be less harmful to gene formation and function. At the same time, only 1.15% of CNVRs overlapped with the exon region. Population differential CNVRs and functional annotations between the Qaidam cattle population and other cattle breeds revealed the functional genes related to immunity (MUC6), growth (ADAMTSL3), and adaptability (EBF2). Our analysis has provided numerous genomic characteristics of some Chinese cattle breeds, which are valuable as customized biological molecular markers in cattle breeding and production.

RESUMO

Background: Notch signaling played a critical role in promoting breast tumorigenesis and progression. However, the role and prognostic value of Notch3 combined with DLL4 expression in breast carcinoma had not been explored. Methods: The retrospective study enrolled 90 breast cancer tissues and 60 noncancerous tissues from (conceal). The expression and prognostic value of Notch3 and DLL4 in patients with breast carcinoma were investigated using Oncomine and UALCAN database. Notch3 and DLL4 expression levels were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. We analyzed the correlation between both proteins expression and clinicopathological parameters and survival data, respectively. Results: The expressions of Notch3 and DLL4 were increased, and Notch3 expression was significantly positively associated with DLL4 in breast carcinoma. The 2 proteins dramatically correlated with advanced stage, high grade and negative Her2 status. The overexpressing of single or both Notch3 and DLL4 resulted in shortened survival of breast cancer patients. And Notch3 overexpression was one of independent risk predictors to poor prognosis. Conclusion: The interaction of Notch3 receptor and DLL4 ligand accelerates oncogenesis, progression, and poor prognosis of breast cancer patients. Notch3 protein may serve as one of biomarker to independently predict prognosis of patients.

RESUMO

Nitrogen (N) deposition significantly affects the growth and the function of invasive clonal plants. However, the effects of heterogeneous N supply with different frequencies on the growth and the potential contribution of clonal integration in invasion plants are still unclear, especially in the complex environment considering ramet damage. To address this question, apical and basal ramets of the clonal invader Hydrocotyle vulgaris were connected or disconnected, N was added to the basal ramets with a high frequency, a low frequency, or no supply, and the total N quantity was the same for the different frequency. Furthermore, 8 aphids were placed on the apical ramets, and 30% of each leaf was cut off to cause damage. The connection between ramets significantly increased the biomass, total carbon (C), and total N of the basal and apical ramets. Higher frequency N supply significantly increased the biomass, total C, and total N of the basal ramets and the entire clonal fragment biomass. The damage had no significant effect on the growth of basal and apical ramets. Especially, under the high N frequency and ramet damage condition, the connection between ramets more significantly increased the biomass, total C, and total N of the apical ramets and the entire clonal fragment biomass. In addition, the uptake rates of 15 NH 4 + and 15 NO 3 - in H. vulgaris had no significant difference, and N supply increased the uptake rates of 15 NH 4 + and 15 NO 3 - of the basal ramets. Our results suggest that both higher frequency N supply and clonal integration are beneficial to the growth of H. vulgaris. Moreover, the heterogeneous N supply with high frequency and ramet damage increases the benefits of clonal integration in H. vulgaris. These findings improve our understanding of the response of clonal invader H. vulgaris to nitrogen deposition and ramet damage.

RESUMO

Dry eye disease is a common and frequently occurring ophthalmology with complex and diverse causes, and its incidence is on the upward trend. The pathogenesis of DED is still completely clear. However, the immune response based on inflammation has been recognized as the core basis of this disease. In this review, we will systematically review the previous research on the treatment of DED in immune inflammation, analyze the latest views and research hotspots, and provide reference for the prevention and treatment of DED.

RESUMO

The biofilm culturing device fixed on the slides was vertically placed in the commonly called small Li Lake of Jiangnan University. The adsorption experiment of Cu2+ was carried out by mature biofilm. Besides, scanning electron microscope (SEM), polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy-energy spectrum (SEM-EDX) were used to analysis the effect of Cu2+ on the morphological structure of biofilm. The result indicated that when the initial concentration of Cu2+ was 5 mg·L-1, the absorption capacity of Cu2+ by unit mass biofilm is the maximum. More extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were released by biofilm due to the stimulation of Cu2+. EPS was beneficial to the adsorption of Cu2+ by biofilm. After the adsorption of Cu2+, the bacterial diversity index decreased, while there were no significant differences in microbial communities on biofilm. Moreover, the main groups combining Cu2+ were the hydroxyl groups and amide groups in S-EPS and B-EPS. Ion exchange is a mechanism of the adsorption of Cu2+ by EPS.
