RESUMO

Dispersal shapes population connectivity and plays a critical role in marine metacommunities. Prominent species for coastal socioecological systems, such as jellyfish and spiny lobsters, feature long pelagic dispersal phases (LPDPs), which have long been overlooked. Here, we use a cross-scale approach combining field surveys of these species with a high-resolution hydrodynamic model to decipher the underlying mechanisms of LPDP patterns in northwestern Mediterranean shores. We identified basin-scale prevailing dispersal routes and synchronic year-to-year patterns tightly linked to prominent circulation features typical of marginal seas and semienclosed basins, with an outstanding role of a retentive source area replenishing shores and potentially acting as a pelagic nursery area. We show how the atmospheric forcing of the ocean, a marked hydrological driver of the Mediterranean Sea, modulates dispersal routes and sources of LPDP at interannual scales. These findings represent a crucial advance in our understanding of the functioning of metapopulations of species with LPDP in marginal seas and may contribute to the effective management of coastal ecosystem services in the face of climate change.

Abstract The work presented shows the results of a study carried out on the process of psychopedagogical orientation in the basic Spanish subject that students of the Degree in Physical Culture, from "Nancy Uranga Romagoza" Faculty of the University of Pinar del Río "Hermanos Saíz Montes de Oca", receive. The methods were used for the historical study of how the psycho-pedagogical orientation has been approached in the context of the Physical Culture career. Surveys, interviews, observation and analysis of documents were carried out to diagnose the current situation of the process. It was found that the teachers of the subject do not conceive the educational psychology orientation as part of the teaching work, in addition the students of the career show little interest in the subject and do not know the use of study techniques that contribute to their self-management of learning. A didactic strategy was designed based on the redimensioning of the didactic components in the subject's program, the design of an improvement course for the subject's teachers and the elaboration of a study techniques manual for the students.

RESUMO

Crustaceans suffer from diseases that can alter their survival and ecology with additional economic consequences for fisheries and aquaculture. Many parasites have been described from crustaceans and with the advent of novel technologies such as next generation sequencing, the discovery of novel parasites has become increasingly efficient. Molecular techniques are beginning to surpass more conventional tools for parasite discovery, but they typically do not provide information on pathology. Histopathology remains one of the least expensive methods for parasite discovery and allows for both detection of parasites and descriptions of the pathology they cause. When used in concert with modern molecular and electron microscopy techniques, the approach is powerful; however, there are few informational tools for the interpretation of histological slides from crustaceans. Those available do not provide comprehensive images of all organs and early works were limited to lower resolution than currently available. More recent texts provide in-depth details of infection in histological section, but few provide images of healthy material or describe a baseline from which to compare. Here, we provide a series of image plates derived from histologically processed tissues from three palinurid lobsters: Panulirus argus, Palinurus elephas and Panulirus guttatus. Histology from these lobsters shows high visual similarity in all tissue types. We provide a histological atlas of healthy tissue that can be used as a baseline resource for pathobiologists working on these common species (and related crustaceans) and we discuss how disease may result in visual aberrations to these tissues.

RESUMO

This study examined the sexual reproductive cycle, energy storage and metabolic requirements of a Mediterranean gorgonian in a mesophotic ecosystem (~70 m depth). Paramuricea macrospina resulted to be a gonochoric internal brooding species with a 1:1 population sex ratio. Oogenesis lasted ~12-14 months, whereas spermatogenesis was significantly shorter, only lasting 6 months. Fertilization occurred during late summer (August) and larval release occurred during autumn (September-October). The organic matter and total lipid content showed a slight seasonal variability. Stable isotopic composition remained constant throughout the year, reflecting a general stability in gorgonian food sources. Conversely, the free fatty acid composition varied seasonally, reflecting changes in P. macrospina energetic demands probably related to gametogenesis and larval brooding. The reproductive ecology and biochemical composition of P. macrospina significantly differ from shallow coastal gorgonian species, reflecting the higher environmental stability of deeper environments.
