RESUMO

Nanofiber membranes have outstanding potential for filtration applications due to their great specific surface area, high porosity, and modifiable structure. Compared to conventional membranes, nanofiber membranes offer substantial high flux and high rejection ratios. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis on the filtration performance of plasma treatment on the polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membrane. The pores in the original membrane were utilized about a mere 10%, while those of the plasma-irradiated membrane were utilized nearly 60%. The membrane modification was performed using N2, O2, and Ar plasma. It was found that Ar plasma was most effective for etching the membrane structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was applied to detect the chemical changes on the membranes. The contact angle of the water droplets on the original membrane was 96.1°; however, after the Ar plasma treatment, it declined to 0°. Finally, the particle retention details in different cross sections of the filtered membranes were observed via a scanning electron microscope. The main innovation is to clarify the changes in the mechanism of the nanofiber membrane trapping particles before and after plasma treatment. In the filtration test after plasma treatment, the internal space of the membrane was fully and effectively utilized, and the flux was also improved. The obtained results suggest a potential application of the plasma-treated nanofiber membrane in water treatment.

RESUMO

Electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber fabric was modified by Cibacron Blue F3GA (CB) to enhance the affinity of the fabric. Batch experiments were performed to study the nanofiber fabric's bovine hemoglobin (BHb) adsorption capacity at different protein concentrations before and after modification. The maximum BHb adsorption capacity of the modified nanofiber fabric was 686 mg/g, which was much larger than the 58 mg/g of the original fabric. After that, the effect of feed concentration and permeation rate on the dynamic adsorption behaviors for BHb of the nanofiber fabric was investigated. The pH impact on BHb and bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption was examined by static adsorption experiments of single protein solutions. The selective separation experiments of the BHb-BSA binary solution were carried out at the optimal pH value, and a high selectivity factor of 5.45 for BHb was achieved. Finally, the reusability of the nanofiber fabric was examined using three adsorption-elution cycle tests. This research demonstrated the potential of the CB-modified PVA nanofiber fabric in protein adsorption and selective separation.

RESUMO

Downward and upward ultrafiltration (UF) was performed using the suspensions of nanosized colloidal silica with different particle diameters and their filtration rates were compared. In downward UF, the filtration rate decreases as the particle diameter decreases because the specific filtration resistance of the filter cake becomes significantly higher. In contrast, the filtration rate in upward UF increases with the decrease in the particle diameter because the filter cake consisting of small particles is exfoliated much more easily under the influence of gravity than that of large ones. In order to evaluate the characteristics of the filter cake exfoliation, the steady filtration rate in the upward mode was measured. The steady filtration rate has a tendency to decrease with particle concentration as well as mean particle diameter. Therefore, when the small particles are added into a given concentration of large particle suspension, the mean particle diameter decreases and the total particle concentration increases due to the dosage of small particles. This results in a maximum of the steady filtration rate at a certain dosage of small particles. Moreover, an estimation equation was proposed for predicting the steady filtration rate in upward UF of colloidal silica suspensions with various mean particle diameters and total particle concentrations.
