OBJECTIVES: Biological variation is a relevant component of diagnostic uncertainty. In addition to within-subject and between-subject variation, preanalytical variation also includes components that contribute to biological variability. Among these, daily recurring, i.e., diurnal physiological variation is of particular importance, as it contains both a random and a non-random component if the exact time of blood collection is not known. METHODS: We introduce four time-dependent characteristics (TDC) of diurnal variations for measurands to assess the relevance and extent of time dependence on the evaluation of laboratory results. RESULTS: TDC address (i) a threshold for considering diurnality, (ii) the expected relative changes per time unit, (iii) the permissible time interval between two blood collections at different daytimes within which the expected time dependence does not exceed a defined analytical uncertainty, and (iv) a rhythm-expanded reference change value. TDC and their importance will be exemplified by the measurands aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, glucose, thyroid stimulating hormone, and total bilirubin. TDCs are calculated for four time slots that reflect known blood collection schedules, i.e., 07:00-09:00, 08:00-12:00, 06:00-18:00, and 00:00-24:00. The amplitude and the temporal location of the acrophase are major determinates impacting the diagnostic uncertainty and thus the medical interpretation, especially within the typical blood collection time from 07:00 to 09:00. CONCLUSIONS: We propose to check measurands for the existence of diurnal variations and, if applicable, to specify their time-dependent characteristics as outlined in our concept.

BACKGROUND: To clinically evaluate how dry eye symptoms in preoperatively diagnosed dry eye patients change with the use of sodium hyaluronate- and dexpanthenol-containing eye drops (HYLO CARE (HC), URSAPHARM Arzneimittel GmbH, Saarbruecken, Germany) after cataract surgery. The aim of the study was not to compare different eye drops but to implement standard treatment in patients with dry eye undergoing cataract surgery. The impact of treatment was evaluated using Symptom Assessment Tools for Dry Eye. METHODS: In this prospective, single-center, open-label clinical trial, 49 patients undergoing cataract surgery were included who showed signs and symptoms of dry eye disease assessed by the Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)) questionnaire, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), and fluorescein tear break-up Time (TBUT). Patients were instructed to apply HC three to four times a day for 5 weeks in the operated eye in addition to the standard postoperative topical anti-inflammatory regimen. The primary endpoint was the change in TBUT. Secondary endpoints were the assessment of the subjective symptoms (VAS), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and slit-lamp examination including the corneal staining score, Schirmer test, and intraocular pressure. RESULTS: At 5 weeks after operation, the mean TBUT increased from 6.42 ± 1.57 s (s) to 7.81 ± 1.83 s in the per-protocol (PP) population (p > 0.001) and from 6.33 ± 1.64 s to 7.71 ± 2.05 s in the intention-to-treat (ITT) population (p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant decrease in all scores (p < 0.05) from the VAS questionnaire except for the tearing score (p = 0.062) at 5 weeks after operation. The mean total corneal staining score also decreased statistically significantly from 8.85 ± 2.49 before operation to 5.61 ± 3.37 at 5 weeks after operation on a 15-point scale. CONCLUSIONS: Controlled standardized dry eye treatment (with HC) improved tear film stability, ocular surface defects, and subjective symptoms of dry eye disease in patients 5 weeks after undergoing cataract surgery. Both the patient and physician assessments indicated high efficacy, tolerability, and a reliable safety profile, as indicated by the low number of at least possibly related adverse events (AE), suggesting its beneficial role in the postoperative management of the ocular surface (OS) in patients with dry eye symptoms prior to and after cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rebleeding of ruptured intracranial aneurysms (RIA) is associated with poor outcomes. Although immediate treatment of RIAs is preferred, optimal treatment timing is multifactorial and may be a complicating factor for achieving the best outcomes. The objective of this study was to compare outcomes for patients with RIAs as a function of treatment time of day. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that examines how treatment time of day influences treatment outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included all patients who were treated, either surgically or endovascularly, for RIAs within 24 hours after admission. Exclusion criteria were blister, mycotic or giant aneurysms, or incomplete records. The modified Rankin Scale was used to evaluate treatment outcomes using multivariate analysis. Nighttime treatment was defined when greater than 50% of the procedure was performed between 10 pm and 7 am, with other times classified as daytime treatment. Off-hours treatment was defined when more than 50% of the procedure was performed between 7 pm and 7 am, with other times classified as on-hours. RESULTS: This study included 493 patients, with 84.2% (415) treated during the daytime, 15.8% (78) during the nighttime, 67.5% (333) during on-hours, and 32.5% (160) during off-hours. These groups did not differ according to age, sex, World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and Fisher scales, aneurysm size, location, and surgical or endovascular treatment. Outcomes were favorable (modified Rankin Scale 0-2) for 72.0% (299) of patients treated during the daytime and 60.0% (46) of patients treated during the nighttime. Aneurysm treatment during the nighttime (OR: 0.50 [95% CI: 0.28-0.91], P = .023) but not during off-hours (OR: 0.76 [0.50-1.14], P = .18) was independently associated with unfavorable outcomes. CONCLUSION: Nighttime treatment was associated with poorer outcomes. Further studies are needed to evaluate outcomes if treatment is postponed to daytime hours.

BACKGROUND: The Wnt signaling pathway is highly conserved in metazoans and regulates a large array of cellular processes including motility, polarity and fate determination, and stem cell homeostasis. Modulation of the actin cytoskeleton via the non-canonical Wnt pathway regulate cell polarity and cell migration that are required for proper vertebrate gastrulation and subsequent neurulation. However, the mechanism(s) of how the non-canonical pathway mediates actin cytoskeleton modulation is not fully understood. RESULTS: Herein, we characterize the role of the Formin-homology protein; dishevelled associated activator of morphogenesis 2 (Daam2) protein in the Wnt signaling pathway. Co-immunoprecipitation assays confirm the binding of Daam2 to dishevelled2 (Dvl2) as well as the domains within these proteins required for interaction; additionally, the interaction between Daam2 and Dvl2 was Wnt-regulated. Sub-cellular localization studies reveal Daam2 is cytoplasmic and regulates the cellular actin cytoskeleton by modulating actin filament formation. During Xenopus development, a knockdown or loss of Daam2 specifically produces neural tube closure defects indicative of a role in non-canonical signaling. Additionally, our studies did not identify any role for Daam2 in canonical Wnt signaling in mammalian culture cells or the Xenopus embryo. CONCLUSIONS: Our studies together identify Daam2 as a component of the non-canonical Wnt pathway and Daam2 is a regulator of neural tube morphogenesis during vertebrate development.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) comprises a large group of neurogenetic disorders characterized by progressive lower extremity spasticity. Neurological evaluation and genetic testing were completed in a Malian family with early-onset HSP. Three children with unaffected consanguineous parents presented with symptoms consistent with childhood-onset complicated HSP. Neurological evaluation found lower limb weakness, spasticity, dysarthria, seizures, and intellectual disability. Brain MRI showed corpus callosum thinning with cortical and spinal cord atrophy, and an EEG detected slow background in the index patient. Whole exome sequencing identified a homozygous missense variant in the adaptor protein (AP) complex 2 alpha-2 subunit (AP2A2) gene. Western blot analysis showed reduced levels of AP2A2 in patient-iPSC derived neuronal cells. Endocytosis of transferrin receptor (TfR) was decreased in patient-derived neurons. In addition, we observed increased axon initial segment length in patient-derived neurons. Xenopus tropicalis tadpoles with ap2a2 knockout showed cerebral edema and progressive seizures. Immunoprecipitation of the mutant human AP-2-appendage alpha-C construct showed defective binding to accessory proteins. We report AP2A2 as a novel genetic entity associated with HSP and provide functional data in patient-derived neuron cells and a frog model. These findings expand our understanding of the mechanism of HSP and improve the genetic diagnosis of this condition.

Inorganic cubic rubidium-lead-halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention owing to their structural, electronic, and unique optical properties. In this study, novel rubidium-lead-bromide (RbPbBr3)-based hybrid perovskite solar cells (HPSCs) with several high-band-gap chalcogenide electron transport layers (ETLs) of In2S3, WS2, and SnS2 were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and using the SCAPS-1D simulator. Initially, the band gap and optical performance were computed using DFT, and these results were utilized for the first time in the SCAPS-1D simulator. Furthermore, the impact of different major influencing parameters, that is, the thickness of the layer, bulk defect density, doping concentration, and defect density of interfaces, including the working temperature, were also investigated and unveiled. Further, a study on an optimized device with the most potential ETL (SnS2) layer was performed systematically. Finally, a comparative study of different reported heterostructures was performed to explore the benchmark of the most recent efficient RbPbBr3-based photovoltaics. The highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) was 29.75% for the SnS2 ETL with Voc of 0.9789 V, Jsc of 34.57863 mA cm-2, and fill factor (FF) of 87.91%, while the PCEs of 21.15 and 24.57% were obtained for In2S3 and WS2 ETLs, respectively. The electron-hole generation, recombination rates, and quantum efficiency (QE) characteristics were also investigated in detail. Thus, the SnS2 ETL shows strong potential for use in RbPbBr3-based hybrid perovskite high-performance photovoltaic devices.

This Editorial precedes the Special Issue entitled "Novel Challenges and Therapeutic Options for Liver Diseases". Following a historical outline of the roots of hepatology, we provide a brief insight into our colleagues' contributions in this issue on the current developments in this discipline related to the prevention of liver diseases, the metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, respectively), liver cirrhosis, chronic viral hepatitides, acute-on-chronic liver failure, liver transplantation, the liver-microbiome axis and microbiome transplantation, and telemedicine. We further add some topics not covered by the contributions herein that will likely impact future hepatology. Clinically, these comprise the predictive potential of organokine crosstalk and treatment options for liver fibrosis. With regard to promising developments in basic research, some current findings on the genetic basis of metabolism-associated chronic liver diseases, chronobiology, metabolic zonation of the liver, aspects of the aging liver against the background of demography, and liver regeneration will be presented. We expect machine learning to thrive as an overarching topic throughout hepatology. The largest study to date on the early detection of liver damage-which has been kicked off on 1 March 2024-is highlighted, too.

l-Ornithine- l-aspartate (LOLA) reduces toxic ammonium (NH3) plasma levels in hepatic encephalopathy. NH3 detoxification/excretion is achieved by its incorporation into urea and glutamine via activation of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CSP1) by l-ornithine and stimulation of arginase by l-aspartate. We aimed at identifying additional molecular targets of LOLA as a potential treatment option for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In primary hepatocytes from NAFLD patients, urea cycle enzymes CSP1 and ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) increase, while the catabolism of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) decreases with disease severity. In contrast, LOLA increased the expression rates of the BCAA enzyme transcripts bcat2, bckdha, and bckdk. In untreated HepG2 hepatoblastoma cells and HepG2-based models of steatosis, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome (the latter for the first time established herein), LOLA reduced the release of NH3; beneficially modulated the expression of genes related to fatty acid import/transport (cd36, cpt1), synthesis (fasn, scd1, ACC1), and regulation (srbf1); reduced cellular ATP and acetyl-CoA; and favorably modulated the expression of master regulators/genes of energy balance/mitochondrial biogenesis (AMPK-α, pgc1α). Moreover, LOLA reconstituted the depolarized mitochondrial membrane potential, while retaining mitochondrial integrity and avoiding induction of superoxide production. Most effects were concentration-dependent at ≤40 mM LOLA. We demonstrate for l-ornithine-l-aspartate a broad range of reconstituting effects on metabolic carriers and targets of catabolism/energy metabolism impaired in NAFLD. These findings strongly advocate further investigations to establish LOLA as a safe, efficacious, and cost-effective basic medication for preventing and/or alleviating NAFLD.

PURPOSE: Proximity to critical neurovascular structures can create significant obstacles during surgical resection of foramen magnum meningiomas (FMMs) to the detriment of treatment outcomes. We propose a new classification that defines the tumor's relationship to neurovascular structures and assess correlation with postoperative outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective review, 41 consecutive patients underwent primary resection of FMMs through a far lateral approach. Groups defined based on tumor-neurovascular bundle configuration included Type 1, bundle ventral to tumor; Type 2a-c, bundle superior, inferior, or splayed, respectively; Type 3, bundle dorsal; and Type 4, nerves and/or vertebral artery encased by tumor. RESULTS: The 41 patients (range 29-81 years old) had maximal tumor diameter averaging 30.1 mm (range 12.7-56 mm). Preoperatively, 17 (41%) patients had cranial nerve (CN) dysfunction, 12 (29%) had motor weakness and/or myelopathy, and 9 (22%) had sensory deficits. Tumor type was relevant to surgical outcomes: specifically, Type 4 demonstrated lower rates of gross total resection (65%) and worse immediate postoperative CN outcomes. Long-term findings showed Types 2, 3, and 4 demonstrated higher rates of permanent cranial neuropathy. Although patients with Type 4 tumors had overall higher ICU and hospital length of stay, there was no difference in tumor configuration and rates of postoperative complications or 30-day readmission. CONCLUSION: The four main types of FMMs in this proposed classification reflected a gradual increase in surgical difficulty and worse outcomes. Further studies are warranted in larger cohorts to confirm its reliability in predicting postoperative outcomes and possibly directing management decisions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Access to the jugular fossa pathologies (JFPs) via the transmastoid infralabyrinthine approach (TI-A) using the nonrerouting technique (removing the bone anterior and posterior to the facial nerve while leaving the nerve protected within the fallopian canal) or with the short-rerouting technique (rerouting the mastoid segment of the facial nerve anteriorly) has been described in previous studies. The objective of this study is to compare the access to Fisch class C lesions (JFPs extending or destroying the infralabyrinthine and apical compartment of the temporal bone with or without involving the carotid canal) between the nonrerouting and the short-rerouting techniques. Also, some tailored steps to the nonrerouting technique (NR-T) were outlined to enhance access to the jugular fossa (JF) as an alternative to the short-rerouting technique. METHODS: Neuronavigated TI-A was performed using the nonrerouting, tailored nonrerouting, and short-rerouting techniques on both sides of 10 human head specimens. Exposed area, horizontal distance, surgical freedom, and horizontal angle were calculated using vector coordinates for nonrerouting and short-rerouting techniques. RESULTS: The short-rerouting technique had significantly higher values than the NR-T ( P < .01) for the exposed area (169.1 ± SD 11.5 mm 2 vs 151.0 ± SD 12.4 mm 2 ), horizontal distance (15.9 ± SD 0.6 mm vs 10.6 ± SD 0.5 mm 2 ), surgical freedom (19 650.2 ± SD 722.5 mm 2 vs 17 233.8 ± SD 631.7 mm 2 ), and horizontal angle (75.2 ± SD 5.1° vs 61.7 ± SD 4.6°). However, adding some tailored steps to the NR-T permitted comparable access to the JF. CONCLUSION: Neuronavigated TI-A with the short-rerouting technique permits wider access to the JF compared with the NR-T. However, the tailored NR-T provides comparable access to the JF and may be a better option for class C1 and selected class C2 and C3 JFPs.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this national, multicenter, cross-sectional, retrospective chart review study was to determine the proportion of patients in Turkey who received hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment after receiving positive anti-HCV results during HCV screening. METHODOLOGY: Data related to patients' demographics, laboratory results, time interval from obtaining a positive anti-HCV result to treatment initiation, specialty of the physician requesting anti-HCV screening, and type of hospital were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 1,000 patients who received a positive anti-HCV result, 50.3% were male and 78.5% were screened for HCV-RNA. Among HCV-RNA screened patients, 54.8% (n = 430) had a positive result. Among patients who tested positive for HCV-RNA, 72.8% received HCV treatment in line with their positive anti-HCV results. The median time from obtaining a positive anti-HCV result to initiation of HCV treatment was 91.0 days (interquartile range 42.0 to 178.5). Non-surgical branches requested HCV-RNA testing more frequently than surgical branches (p < 0.001). The rate of access to HCV treatment was higher among patients screened in university hospitals than among patients screened in training and research hospitals (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate a higher rate of treatment initiation among patients with HCV infection than is described in the published literature. Furthermore, the time from screening to treatment initiation was considerably shorter compared with other international studies. However, since HCV-RNA testing was not requested in a significant portion of patients with a positive anti-HCV test result, there might be a large patient population with HCV who do not receive treatment.

The generation of power and fuel sustainability that contributes to a cleaner output of exhaust gases is one of the most important objectives the world seeks. In this paper, oxyhydrogen gas is used to retrofit into a two-stroke engine. The water was electrolysed and generated a mixture of oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2) or known as oxyhydrogen (HHO) gas via an electrolytic dry cell generator. The HHO was retrofitted experimentally to investigate the engine emissions and exhaust gas temperature from a 1.5 kW gasoline engine. The engine was tested with different power ratings (84-720 W) to investigate the performance and emissions of the engine using gasoline followed by the addition of HHO. The emissions of CO and NOx were measured with different amounts of HHO added. The exhaust temperature was calculated as one of the variables to be considered in relation to pollution. The air-fuel ratios are varied from 12 to 20% in the experiment. The most appropriate air-fuel ratio needed to start the generator with the most environmentally friendly gas emission was analysed. The results showed that the addition of HHO to the engine is successful in reducing fuel consumption up to 8.9%. A higher percentage of HHO added also has improved the emissions and reduced exhaust gas temperature. In this study, the highest quantity of HHO added at 0.15% of the volume fraction reduced CO gas emission by up to 9.41%, NOx gas up to 4.31%, and exhaust gas temperature by up to 2.02%. Generally, adding oxyhydrogen gas has significantly reduced the emissions, and exhaust temperature and provided an eco-friendly environment.

It is essential and challenging to develop green and cost-effective solar cells to meet the energy demands. Solar cells with a perovskite light-harvesting layer are the most promising technology to propel the world toward next-generation solar energy. Formamidinium lead tri-iodide (FAPbI3)-based perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs), with their considerable performance, offer cost-effective solar cells. One of the major issues that the PSC community is now experiencing is the stability of α-FAPbI3 at relatively low temperatures. In this study, we fabricated FAPbI3-PSCs using cyclohexane (CHX) material via a two-step deposition method. For this purpose, CHX is added to the formamidinium iodide:methylammonium chloride (FAI:MACl) solution as an additive and used to form a better FAPbI3 layer by controlling the reaction between FAI and lead iodide (PbI2). The CHX additive induces the reaction of undercoordinated Pb2+ with FAI material and produces an α-FAPbI3 layer with low charge traps and large domains. In addition, the CHX-containing FAPbI3 layers show higher carrier lifetimes and facilitate carrier transfer in F-PSCs. The CHX-modified F-PSCs yield a high champion efficiency of 22.84% with improved ambient and thermal stability behavior. This breakthrough provides valuable findings regarding the formation of a desirable FAPbI3 layer for photovoltaic applications and holds promise for the industrialization of F-PSCs.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the microsurgical anatomy of the superficial temporal artery (STA), explore the relationship between STA length and lumen diameter, and develop a reliable radiologic method for selecting STA segments for bypass surgery. METHODS: This study used 10 cadaveric dissections (20 STAs, both sides) and 20 retrospective radiological examinations (40 STAs, both sides), employing curved multiplanar reformation and flow color lookup table (CLUT) DICOM processing. Measurements included vessel lumen diameters and luminal cross-sectional thicknesses 3 mm proximal to the STA bifurcation, 3 mm distal to the frontal branch, 5 cm distal to the frontal branch, 3 mm distal to the parietal branch, and 5 cm distal to the parietal branch. The distance between the STA bifurcation and the superior zygomatic border (SZB) was also measured. In our analysis, descriptive statistics encompassed mean, standard deviation (SD), standard error, minimum and maximum values, and distributions. Comparative statistics were performed using Student's t-test, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between STA measurements of bifurcation distances (p = 0.88) and lumen diameters (p = 0.46) between cadavers and radiological measures. However, lumen thicknesses were larger in frontal branches than parietal branches at the seventh and eighth centimeter (p = 0.012, p = 0.039). Branches became thinner distally from the zygoma in both cadavers and radiological image measurements. CONCLUSION: The CLUT DICOM processing radiological measures provided the high-precision required to enable pre-surgical vessel selection for extracranial-intracranial bypass. The results show that STA vessel luminal diameters are sufficient (> 1 mm) for bypass surgery in the first 9 cm but gradually decrease after that. Also shown is that the choice of frontal versus parietal branches depends on individual anatomical features; therefore, careful preoperative radiological examination is critical.

BACKGROUND: Cranioplasty corrects cranial bone defects using various bone substitutes or autologous bone flaps created during a previous craniectomy surgery. These autologous bone flaps can be preserved through subcutaneous preservation (SP) or cryopreservation (CP). AIM: We aim to compare outcomes and complications for both SP and CP techniques to enhance the current evidence about autologous bone flap preservation. METHODS: Five electronic databases were searched to collect all relevant studies. Records were screened for eligibility. Data were extracted from the included studies independently. We categorized surgical site infection (SSI) as either due to Traumatic brain injury (TBI) or not to reveal potential variations in SSI incidence. The double-arm meta-analysis utilized risk ratios (RR) and mean differences (MD) with corresponding confidence intervals (CI) to pool categorical and continuous outcomes, respectively. Proportions with their respective 95% CIs were pooled for single-arm meta-analyses to determine outcomes related to SP technique. RESULTS: Seventeen studies involving 1169 patients were analyzed. No significant difference in SSI rates was observed between SP and CP methods in patients with or without TBI. SP was linked to shorter hospital stays in two studies (194 patients). Single-arm analysis showed a 17% revision surgery rate across five studies (375 patients) and infection rates in 17 studies for SP. New bone formation occurred in 13.2% of patients, with 19.9% showing resorption. CONCLUSION: SP and CP methods showed similar SSI rates post-craniectomy in TBI and non-TBI patients. SP was associated with reduced hospitalization time, low infection rates, and a moderate need for revision surgery.

BACKGROUND: The risk of recurrence is overestimated by the Kaplan-Meier method when competing events, such as death without recurrence, are present. Such overestimation can be avoided by using the Aalen-Johansen method, which is a direct extension of Kaplan-Meier that accounts for competing events. Meningiomas commonly occur in older individuals and have slow-growing properties, thereby warranting competing risk analysis. The extent to which competing events are considered in meningioma literature is unknown, and the consequences of using incorrect methodologies in meningioma recurrence risk analysis have not been investigated. METHODS: We surveyed articles indexed on PubMed since 2020 to assess the usage of competing risk analysis in recent meningioma literature. To compare recurrence risk estimates obtained through Kaplan-Meier and Aalen-Johansen methods, we applied our international database comprising ~ 8,000 patients with a primary meningioma collected from 42 institutions. RESULTS: Of 513 articles, 169 were eligible for full-text screening. There were 6,537 eligible cases from our PERNS database. The discrepancy between the results obtained by Kaplan-Meier and Aalen-Johansen was negligible among low-grade lesions and younger individuals. The discrepancy increased substantially in the patient groups associated with higher rates of competing events (older patients with high-grade lesions). CONCLUSION: The importance of considering competing events in recurrence risk analysis is poorly recognized as only 6% of the studies we surveyed employed Aalen-Johansen analyses. Consequently, most of the previous literature has overestimated the risk of recurrence. The overestimation was negligible for studies involving low-grade lesions in younger individuals; however, overestimation might have been substantial for studies on high-grade lesions.

The oxygen sensors with limiting current derived from a dense diffusion barrier have an excellent advantage of detecting oxygen partial pressure by controlling the ratio of air and fuel in combustion environments. Therefore, AgNb1-xTixO3-δ (wherein x varies from 0.1 to 0.3) was prepared as such a dense diffusion barrier layer for sensor application. Among the investigated compositions as a new condensed barrier for the diffusion of sensors, AgNb1-xTixO3-δ (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) exhibits oxygen ionic conductivities from 1.37 × 10-4 to 5.78 × 10-3 S·cm-1 in the temperature range of 600-900 °C and outstanding stable electrochemical properties. Herein, we employ these novel materials as dense diffusion barriers and 8 mol % zirconia stabilized by yttria (8YSZ) as a solid-state electrolyte for the fabrication of the oxygen sensors with limiting current. We observed a direct connection between the limiting current and oxygen content within the interval of 0.5-5.0 mol % at 800 °C and a low working voltage. The increase of Ti-doping amount in AgNbO3 accelerates the sensing response to oxygen gas and promotes the service life of the sensor.

The remarkable performance of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS)-based double heterojunction (DH) photovoltaic cells is presented in this work. To increase all photovoltaic performance parameters, in this investigation, a novel solar cell structure (FTO/SnS2/CIGS/Sb2S3/Ni) is explored by utilizing the SCAPS-1D simulation software. Thicknesses of the buffer, absorber and back surface field (BSF) layers, acceptor density, defect density, capacitance-voltage (C-V), interface defect density, rates of generation and recombination, operating temperature, current density, and quantum efficiency have been investigated for the proposed solar devices with and without BSF. The presence of the BSF layer significantly influences the device's performance parameters including short-circuit current (Jsc), open-circuit voltage (Voc), fill factor (FF), and power conversion efficiency (PCE). After optimization, the simulation results of a conventional CIGS cell (FTO/SnS2/CIGS/Ni) have shown a PCE of 22.14% with Voc of 0.91 V, Jsc of 28.21 mA cm-2, and FF of 86.31. Conversely, the PCE is improved to 31.15% with Voc of 1.08 V, Jsc of 33.75 mA cm-2, and FF of 88.50 by introducing the Sb2S3 BSF in the structure of FTO/SnS2/CIGS/Sb2S3/Ni. These findings of the proposed CIGS-based double heterojunction (DH) solar cells offer an innovative method for realization of high-efficiency solar cells that are more promising than the previously reported traditional designs.

Perovskites composed of inorganic cesium (Cs) halide provide a route to thermally resistant solar cells. Nevertheless, the use of hole-transporting layers (HTLs) with hydrophobic additives is constrained by moisture-induced phase deterioration. Due to significant electrical loss, dopant-free HTLs are unable to produce practical solar cells. In this article, we designed a two-dimensional 1,3,6,8-tetrakis[5-(N,N-di(p-(methylthio)phenyl)amino-p-phenyl)-thiophen-2-yl]pyrene (termed SMe-TATPyr) molecule as a new HTL to regulate electrical loss in lead-free perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We optimized the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs based on mixed tin (Sn)/germanium (Ge) halide perovskite (CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3) by exploring different factors, such as the deep and shallow levels of defects, density of states at the valence band (NV), thickness of the perovskite film, p-type doping concentration (NA) of HTL, the series and shunt resistances, and so on. We carried out comparative research by employing the 1D-SCAPS (a solar cell capacitance simulator) analysis tool. Through optimization of the PSC, we obtained the highest parameters in the simulated solar cell structure of fluorine tin oxide (FTO)/titanium dioxide (TiO2)/CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3/SMe-TATPyr/gold (Au), and the PCE reached up to 20% with a fill factor (FF) of 81.89%.

Some animals form transient, responsive and solid-like ensembles through dynamic structural interactions. These ensembles demonstrate emergent responses such as spontaneous self-assembly, which are difficult to achieve in synthetic soft matter. Here we use shape-morphing units comprising responsive polymers to create solids that self-assemble, modulate their volume and disassemble on demand. The ensemble is composed of a responsive hydrogel, liquid crystal elastomer or semicrystalline polymer ribbons that reversibly bend or twist. The dispersions of these ribbons mechanically interlock, inducing reversible aggregation. The aggregated liquid crystal elastomer ribbons have a 12-fold increase in the yield stress compared with cooled dispersion and contract by 34% on heating. Ribbon type, concentration and shape dictate the aggregation and govern the global mechanical properties of the solid that forms. Coating liquid crystal elastomer ribbons with a liquid metal begets photoresponsive and electrically conductive aggregates, whereas seeding cells on hydrogel ribbons enables self-assembling three-dimensional scaffolds, providing a versatile platform for the design of dynamic materials.
