INTRODUCTION: Antioxidants appear to hinder the actions of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). The aim of this research was to evaluate the association between dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) and H. pylori infection. METHODS: A case-control study was carried out among 200 patients with  H. pylori infection and 402 healthy subjects (18-55 years). Dietary data were collected using a validated 168-item quantitative food frequency questionnaire. DTAC was calculated based on the oxygen radical absorbance capacity of each food (except for coffee) reported by the US Department of Agriculture. RESULTS: Compared with participants in the lowest tertile of DTAC, those in the highest tertile had a significantly lower odds ratio (OR) in the crude model (OR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.14-0.61; p for trend = 0.001), model 1 (adjustment for age and sex) (OR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.24-0.58; p for trend < 0.001), and model 2 (adjustment for model 1 plus body mass index, waist circumference, physical activity, smoking, dietary intake of energy and fat) (OR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.10-0.40; p for trend ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A high DTAC is associated with a reduced risk of H. pylori infection in adults. Further studies are mandatory to elucidate the mechanisms and a dose-effect relationship.

Background: Although poor dietary habits have a great effect on the health status of children, especially in toddlers, a few questionnaires exist for the assessment of dietary imbalances. This study aims to assess the validity and reliability of the NutriCHEQ in Iranian healthy toddlers. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, first, the NutriCHEQ was translated to Persian and culturally adapted by the forward-backward translation technique. In order to assess the face validity, we used a cognitive interviewing technique of 25 parents/caretakers of healthy toddlers. In the next step, experts assessed content validity, respectively. One item was removed during the content validity process. Then, a blueprint of NutriCHEQ was distributed among 156 parents/caretakers of healthy toddlers in different focal points in Tehran for assessing construct validity by nonlinear principal components analysis. In addition, the anthropometric indices checklist and Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) were filled out for toddlers. Then, construct validity was assessed. The Varimax rotation ran for two sections separately. The four-factor structure was confirmed. Results: The model showed a good fit, and all the extracted variance of four factors were satisfactory (F1 = 20.77; F2 = 22.30; F3 = 14.75; and F4 = 13.71). All of the extracted items of the NutriCHEQ in two parts showed 71.53% cumulative variance. For criterion-related validity, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the NutriCHEQ and Z-score (rho = 0.632, P < 0.001). The Bland-Altman result indicates 95% limits of agreement between the NutriCHEQ questionnaire and Z-score. Conclusions: Therefore, we concluded that NutriCHEQ is a valid, reliable, and convenient instrument to identify the Iranian toddlers' nutritional status. Therefore, it can be used for research and clinical settings.

According to studies, there are many inconsistencies in how IGF-1 levels change after bariatric surgery compared to before surgery, as well as its effects. These discrepancies can be attributed to various factors such as age, body mass index (BMI), and duration of intervention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) after bariatric surgery. A systematic review and meta-analysis based on the PRISMA guidelines was conducted from inception until 2021. From 1871 articles initially selected, 24 studies with 28 treatment arms met the eligible criteria and were included. Pooled findings from the random-effects model indicated that IGF-1 levels increased significantly [weighted mean difference (WMD) = 8.84 ng/ml; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.30-17.39; p = 0.043] after bariatric surgery compared to before surgery. No significant heterogeneity was noted among the studies (Cochran Q test, p = 0.90, I2 = 0.0%). In subgroup analysis, bariatric surgery significantly increased IGF-1 levels at age <40 years but not at age ≤40 years. Bariatric surgery is capable of increasing the IGF-1 levels compared to the period prior to surgery but with a modest clinical magnitude.

OBJECTIVE: Circulating insulin levels have been positively associated with risk of breast cancer (BrCa); however, it remains unclear whether a diet inducing an elevated insulin response influences Breast risk. METHODS: In this study, 250 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and 250 hospitalised controls were recruited using convenience sampling. The dietary insulin index (DII) was calculated by dividing the dietary insulin load by the total energy intake. RESULTS: Compared with those in the lowest tertiles of DII and dietary insulin load (DIL), subjects in the highest tertile were more likely to be overweight, have a family history of breast and other types of cancer and a history of benign breast diseases. After controlling for multiple potential confounders, a significantly increased BrCa odds was observed in the highest tertiles of DII and DIL score compared with the lowest tertiles (odds ratio (OR): 1.46; 95% CI: 0.67-3.19, P = .006) and (OR: 1.87; 95% CI: 0.92-3.80, P = .038), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that a diet that induces an elevated postprandial insulin response, indicated by higher DII and DIL scores, may increase the odds of BrCa, especially among women.
