RESUMO

In this study, we develop a time-varying metasurface based on the bound states in the continuum (BIC) with variable conductors, to store electromagnetic waves. The storage and retrieval of electromagnetic waves are demonstrated numerically through dynamic switching between quasi-BIC and BIC states by modulating the variable conductors. The storage efficiency exhibits oscillatory behaviors with respect to the timing of storage and retrieval. These behaviors can be attributed to the interference of a resonant mode and a static mode that is formed by direct current. In addition, the storage efficiency of a single-layer metasurface can reach 35% under ideal conditions.

RESUMO

A numerical study predicts that a single metamolecule with magnetism and chirality has giant magnetochiral (MCh) effects at microwave frequencies. The magnetism is provided by the ferromagnetic resonance of ferrite under dc bias magnetic fields, while the chirality is provided by the spiral arrangement of dielectric cubes with Mie resonance. The dielectric and magnetic resonances interfere in the metamolecule, resulting in a two-order of magnitude enhancement of the MCh effect compared with that reported in previous studies. This prediction is verified experimentally. A unity-order directional difference in the refractive index caused by the MCh effect is also demonstrated. This study is a significant milestone in the practical use of the MCh effect.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate the observation of a frequency-shift dynamics at a temporal boundary in the terahertz (THz) region relying on a scheme that controls the structural dispersion of a metal-semiconductor waveguide. Ultrafast structural-dispersion switching is achieved within a subpicosecond timescale by illuminating a waveguide surface with an optical pump pulse during the propagation of a THz pulse in the waveguide. Owing to the relatively high conversion efficiency, up to 23%, under the condition that the frequency shift is sufficiently larger than the bandwidth of the incident pulse, the rapid variation of the THz frequency around the temporal boundary is directly observed in the time domain.

RESUMO

The large capacity and robustness of information encoding in the temporal mode of photons is important in quantum information processing, in which characterizing temporal quantum states with high usability and time resolution is essential. We propose and demonstrate a direct measurement method of temporal complex wavefunctions for weak light at a single-photon level with subpicosecond time resolution. Our direct measurement is realized by ultrafast metrology of the interference between the light under test and self-generated monochromatic reference light; no external reference light or complicated post-processing algorithms are required. Hence, this method is versatile and potentially widely applicable for temporal state characterization.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of Bayesian penalized likelihood (BPL) reconstruction for improving lesion conspicuity of malignant lung tumors on 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET/CT) as compared with the ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) reconstruction incorporating time-of-flight (TOF) model and point-spread-function (PSF) correction. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with primary or metastatic lung cancers who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT were retrospectively studied. PET images were reconstructed with OSEM + TOF, OSEM + TOF + PSF, and BPL with noise penalty strength ß-value of 200, 400, 600, and 800. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was determined in normal liver parenchyma. Lung lesion conspicuity was evaluated in 50 lung lesions by using a 4-point scale (0, no visible; 1, poor; 2, good; 3, excellent conspicuity). Two observers were independently asked to choose the most preferred reconstruction for detecting the lung lesions on a per-patient level. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was measured in each of the 50 lung lesions. RESULTS: Liver SNR on the images reconstructed by BPL with ß-value of 600 and 800 (17.8 ± 3.7 and 22.5 ± 4.6, respectively) was significantly higher than that by OSEM + TOF + PSF (15.0 ± 3.4, p < 0.0001). BPL with ß-value of 600 was chosen most frequently as the preferred reconstruction algorithm for lung lesion assessment by both observers. The conspicuity score of the lung lesions < 10 mm in diameter on images reconstructed by BPL with ß-value of 600 was significantly greater than that with OSEM + TOF + PSF (2.2 ± 0.8 vs 1.6 ± 0.9, p < 0.0001), while the conspicuity score of the lesions ≥ 10 mm in diameter was not significantly different between BPL with ß-value of 600 and OSEM + TOF + PSF. The mean SUVmax was increased by BPL with ß-value of 600 for the lung lesions with < 10 mm in diameter, compared to OSEM + TOF + PSF (3.4 ± 3.1 to 4.2 ± 3.5, p = 0.001). In contrast, BPL with ß-value of 600 did not provide increased SUVmax for the lesions ≥ 10 mm in diameter. CONCLUSION: BPL reconstruction significantly improves the detection of small inconspicuous malignant tumors in the lung, improving the diagnostic performance of PET/CT.

RESUMO

We designed a cut-wire-pair metasurface that works as a transparent terahertz half-wave plate, by matching the electric and magnetic resonances of the structure. Due to the impedance matching nature of the resonances, a large transmission phase shift between the orthogonal polarizations was achieved, while permitting a high transmission. The electric and magnetic responses of the proposed structure were confirmed by evaluating the electric admittance and magnetic impedance. The structure was fabricated on a flexible film and its helicity-conversion function in the terahertz frequency range was experimentally demonstrated. The thickness of the device is less than 1/10 of the working vacuum wavelength, and a high amplitude helicity conversion rate over 80 % was achieved. Finally, using simulations, we demonstrate the feasibility of the gradually rotating cut-wire-pair array in terahertz wave-front control.

RESUMO

We demonstrate that a self-complementary checkerboard-like metasurface works as a broadband coherent perfect absorber (CPA) when symmetrically illuminated by two counter-propagating incident waves. A theoretical analysis based on wave interference and the results of numerical simulations of the proposed metasurface are provided. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate the proposed CPA in the terahertz regime by using a time-domain spectroscopy technique. We observe that the metasurface can work as a CPA below its lowest diffraction frequency. The size of the absorptive areas of the proposed CPA can be much smaller than the incident wavelength. Unlike conventional CPAs, the presented one simultaneously achieves the broadband operation and energy concentration of electromagnetic waves at the deep-subwavelength scale.

RESUMO

This paper proposes a reconfigurable planar metamaterial that can be switched between capacitive and inductive responses using local changes in the electrical conductivity of its constituent material. The proposed device is based on Babinet's principle and exploits the singular electromagnetic responses of metallic checkerboard structures, which are dependent on the local electrical conductivity. Utilizing the heating-induced metal-insulator transition of vanadium dioxide (VO2), the proposed meta-material is designed to compensate for the effect of the substrate and is experimentally characterized in the terahertz regime. This reconfigurable metamaterial can be utilized as a switchable filter and as a switchable phase shifter for terahertz waves.

RESUMO

This research resolves a long-standing problem on the electromagnetic response of self-complementary metallic screens with checkerboardlike geometry. Although Babinet's principle implies that they show a frequency-independent response, this unusual characteristic has not been observed yet due to the singularities of the metallic point contacts in the checkerboard geometry. We overcome this difficulty by replacing the point contacts with resistive sheets. The proposed structure is prepared and characterized by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. It is experimentally confirmed that the resistive checkerboard structures exhibit a flat transmission spectrum over 0.1-1.1 THz. It is also demonstrated that self-complementarity can eliminate even the frequency-dependent transmission characteristics of resonant metamaterials.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate control over the group delay of narrow-band (quasi continuous wave) terahertz (THz) pulses with constant amplitude based on optical switching of a metasurface characteristic. The near-field coupling between resonant modes of a complementary split ring resonator pair and a rectangular slit show an electromagnetically induced transparency-like (EIT-like) spectral shape in the reflection spectrum of a metasurface. This coupling induces group delay of a narrow-band THz pulse around the resonant frequency of the EIT-like spectrum. By irradiating the metasurface with an optical excitation pulse, the metasurface becomes mirror-like and thus the incident narrow-band THz pulse is reflected without a delay. Remarkably, if we select the appropriate excitation power, only the group delay of the narrow-band THz pulse can be switched while the amplitude is maintained before and after optical excitation.

RESUMO

The bacteriocins produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis C101910 (C101910) and NBRC 12007 (NBRC 12007) were used to prevent the growth of sake spoiling hiochi bacteria (Lactobacillus hilgardii, Lactobacillus fructivorans, and Lactobacillus paracasei) in namazake, which is raw (unpasteurized) sake. The bacteriocin concentrations required for decreasing the viable cell concentrations of L. hilgardii and L. fructivorans below the detection limit (1.0 x 10(2) cells/ml) in 24 h from the initial concentration of 4.0-9.5 x 10(5) cells/ml in the namazake at pH 4.5 and at 4 degrees C, were 18-35 U/ml and 5.6 U/ml for the bacteriocin from C101910 and NBRC 12007, respectively. To decrease the viable cell concentration of L. paracasei from the initial concentration of 7.5 x 10(5) cells/ml to below the detection limit (1.0 x 10(2) cells/ml) in 24 h, 350 U/ml bacteriocin from C101910 and 140 U/ml bacteriocin from NBRC 12007 were required. In experiments using McIlvaine buffer (pH 4.5) with 15% ethanol instead of namazake as the medium, the viable cell concentrations of L. hilgardii and L. paracasei decreased to less than 1.0 x 10(2) cells/ml, whereas those of L. fructivorans decreased to less than 1.0 x 10(3) cells/ml, when bacteriocins were added at the concentrations that had proven effective in namazake. The membrane depolarization assay using a fluorescent probe showed that the presence of ethanol stimulated the collapse of the membrane potential induced by bacteriocins. The ethanol induced collapse of the membrane potential suggests that the application of bacteriocins at the storage stage of namazake is more beneficial than when used in other stages of the sake brewing process.

RESUMO

A stick-typed long lasting device for both transdermal and topical drug delivery has been developed. Ketotifen fumarate (KT) was used as a model drug. The effect of a variety of permeation enhancers was investigated using hairless mouse skin in vitro. Polyoxyethylene oleyl ether (POE), among the enhancers used, most enhanced the skin permeation of KT. The permeation enhancement was mainly due to the increase in the drug solubility in the stratum corneum and the resulting increase in the partition coefficient. The rate of skin permeation of KT was approximately proportional to the loading dose of the drug.
