Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder with a notable increase in global incidence in recent years. Individuals diagnosed with diabetes are at an elevated risk of morbidity and mortality compared with the general population. For several years, the potential of phytochemicals as anti-inflammatory agents to improve the healing of diabetic wounds has been under investigation. Rutin, a flavonoid, is a particularly promising candidate for use in wound healing. Our study aims to investigate the potential impact of a topical application of rutin nanoformulation on wound healing in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycemic rats controlled with metformin, with a focus on its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Rats are randomized into 3 groups. GI: diabetic control group; wound untreated. GII: diabetes and rutin-NP-treated wound. GIII: diabetic + ß-sitosterol-treated wound. The findings suggest that topical application of rutin-NPs has the potential to enhance the wound-healing process by attenuating oxidative stress, as evidenced by restoring GSH, CAT, and SOD antioxidants, and decreasing MDA production mediated by Nrf2 activation. Also, inflammation is suppressed, as indicated by the decreased CRP, IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α levels. Molecular docking data confirm the biological data of rutin, where rutin is docked into the catalytic site of the X-ray crystallographic structures of CRP, Keap-1, IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α via grid-based ligand docking. The binding affinity and binding energy of ligand-protein interactions demonstrate the affinity and binding to the specifically selected proteins.

Introduction: Intuitive eating (IE) is eating without judgment, relying only on physiological hunger and satiety. Sex differences in IE have been reported; however, none of the studies have explicitly examined IE and its relationship with body mass index (BMI) in the Saudi Arabian population. Thus, this study aimed to investigate sex differences in IE and its relationship with BMI in the Saudi population. Subjects/methods: A cross-sectional online survey of 360 participants (18 years or older) with self-reported weight and height was conducted. IE was measured using the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2). Separate multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to determine if total IE and its subscale scores differed across sexes. It was also conducted to assess the relationship between IE and BMI across sexes. Results: Women had higher total IE score, eating for physical rather than emotional reasons (EPR), and body-food choice congruence (BFCC) scores compared to men (p = 0.013, p = 0.01, p <0.001, respectively). The analysis showed a significant negative association between total IE, BFCC, EPR scores, and BMI in women compared to men (p = 0.023, p = 0.01, p = 0.003, respectively). Conclusion: The data on the sex differences in IE and its subscales and their different association with BMI encourage tailing nutrition-related recommendations in the context of intuitive eating based on sexes. Future studies are needed to explore how intuitive eating functions differently in women compared to men and explore the causal relationship between IE and BMI in this population.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer has been major cause of cancer related death and day by day Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases are increasing globally. Present study explored the link between SLC30A10 mRNA expression with vitamin-D level among the NSCLC patients. METHODS: Present study included newly diagnosed 100 NSCLC patients and 100 healthy controls. Quantitative real time PCR was performed to check the SLC30A10 mRNA expression after cDNA synthesis from extracted total RNA from serum sample. Vitamin-D level was also analyzed in all the NSCLC patients by electrochemiluminscence based immunoassay method. RESULTS: Present research work observed decreased SLC30A10 mRNA expression (0.16 fold) among the NSCLC patients, decreased SLC30A10 mRNA expression was linked with advanced stage (0.15 fold, P < 00001) of disease and distant organ metastases (0.11 fold, P < 00001) compared to its contrast. Decreased level of vitamin-D was also observed with advanced stage (17.98 ng/ml, P < 00001) of disease and distant organ metastases (16.23 ng/ml, P < 00001) compared to its contrast. Positive correlation was observed between SLC30A10 mRNA expression with vitamin-D level among the NSCLC patients suggesting decrease or increase in SLC30A10 mRNA expression mau decreases or increase the vitamin-D level. NSCLC patients with vitamin-D deficiency had 0.14 reduced SCL30A10 mRNA expression while insufficient (P = 0 .06) and sufficient (P = 0.03) showed comparatively high SCL30A10 mRNA expression. CONCLUSION: Study concluded that down regulation of SLC30A10 mRNA and vitamin-D deficiency may involve in advancement of disease and distant organ metastases. It was also suggested that the decrease of increase in SLC30A10 expression may cause the decrease of increase in vitamin-D level among the NSCLC patients may be involved in disease severity and worseness of NSCLC disease.

BACKGROUND: The HEALTHY Study was a multicomponent school-based intervention, designed to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in middle-school students. OBJECTIVES: We examined whether the difference in dietary magnesium intake, BMI percentile, and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations from 6th to 8th grade were related in the intervention schools and in the control schools that participated in the HEALTHY Study. METHODS: A total of 2181 ethnically diverse students, from 11.3 to 13.7 y of age, with completed dietary records, BMI percentile, and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations at 6th and 8th grades were included. Dietary magnesium intake was self-reported using the Block Kids FFQ. A hierarchical multiple regression model was used to determine whether the differences in dietary magnesium intake, BMI percentile, and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations from 6th to 8th grades were related, while adjusting for dietary calcium intake and total energy intake. RESULTS: The difference in dietary magnesium intake was significantly related to changes in BMI percentile from 6th to 8th grade in intervention and in control schools [intervention: ß: -0.07; 95% CI: -0.58, -0.02; P = 0.03; R2 (regression coefficient effect size): 0.14; 95% CI for R2: 0.10, 0.17; control: ß: -0.08; 95% CI: -0.63, -0.09; P = 0.01; R2: 0.12; 95% CI for R2: 0.08, 0.15]. The difference in dietary magnesium intake was not related to plasma glucose and insulin concentrations in intervention and in control schools. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that a multicomponent intervention was associated with reduced risk of T2DM, and that this association may be modulated, in part, by magnesium. The differences in dietary magnesium intake from 6th to 8th grade were negatively related to changes in BMI percentile among middle-school students.

BACKGROUND: Data on dietary magnesium intake on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among children and adolescents is limited. AIM: We examined whether dietary magnesium intake was related to body mass index (BMI) percentile, and glycemic indices at baseline and at end of the HEALTHY Study for both intervention and control schools. The HEALTHY Study was a multi-component, school-based intervention, to prevent T2DM in children and adolescents from 6th to 8th grades. METHODS: A secondary data analyses of 2181 ethnically diverse students with completed dietary records, BMI percentile, and plasma insulin and glucose concentrations at baseline (6th grade) and end of study (8th grade) were included from the HEALTHY Study. Dietary magnesium intake was self-reported using the Block Kids Food Frequency Questionnaire. A hierarchical multiple regression model was used to determine the relationships between dietary magnesium intake, BMI percentile, and glycemic indices at baseline and end of the HEALTHY Study, adjusting for magnesium intake from supplements, total energy intake, and fitness level. RESULTS: Dietary magnesium intake was related to BMI percentile at baseline and at end of the HEATHY Study (ß = -0.05, 95% CI = -0.02 to 0, p = 0.04; ß = -0.06, 95% CI = -0.02 to -0.003, p = 0.004); R 2 [regression coefficient effect size] = 0.03; R 2 = 0.06). Dietary magnesium intake was not related to plasma insulin and glucose concentrations at baseline and end of the HEALTHY Study. CONCLUSION: Dietary magnesium intake was inversely related to BMI percentile among middle school students from the HEALTHY Study. Research is required to evaluate the dose-response relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption (good sources of magnesium) and risk of T2DM in children and adolescents. This relationship also needs to be explored among different BMI categories.

Aging is associated with a progressive decline in skeletal muscle mass and strength. The decline, known as sarcopenia, could lead to physical disability, poor quality of life, and death. In addition, the older population usually experiences age-related muscle changes that affect muscle mass, muscular strength, and functional abilities. The purpose of this review is to describe the role of protein and exercise in slowing the progression of sarcopenia. It will also discuss whether age-related changes can be attenuated by dietary protein and exercise in the older population. This review will also cover one of the possible mechanisms of how dietary protein and exercise are involved in sarcopenia prevention, as well as the available measurement tools. Based on the findings of this review, the adequate amount of protein required for older men and women needs to be revised and likely be higher. Moreover, studies are required to explore some inconclusive findings concerning sarcopenia in the older population. Further research is required to investigate the following: (1) the safety and effectiveness concerning the consumption of 1.4 g of protein/kg of body weight (or more) in this vulnerable population; (2) the effectiveness of amino acid supplementation in reducing progression of sarcopenia over time through longitudinal studies; (3) the preferred source and timing of protein for the older population to maintain muscular strength and attenuate sarcopenia; (4) exercise interventions, especially those of longer duration, in the attenuation of sarcopenia; (5) other types of exercise and their effects on age-related muscle changes; (6) the mechanism of how protein and exercise prevent muscle loss with aging; and (7) determine the best method to diagnose sarcopenia.
