Vaccine-induced T cells and neutralizing antibodies are essential for protection against SARS-CoV-2. Previously, we demonstrated that an antigen delivery system, pullulan nanogel (PNG), delivers vaccine antigen to lymph node medullary macrophages and thereby enhances the induction of specific CD8+ T cells. In this study, we revealed that medullary macrophage-selective delivery by PNG depends on its binding to a C-type lectin SIGN-R1. In a K18-hACE2 mouse model of SARS-CoV-2 infection, vaccination with a PNG-encapsulated receptor-binding domain of spike protein decreased the viral load and prolonged the survival in the CD8+ T cell- and B cell-dependent manners. T cell receptor repertoire analysis revealed that although the vaccine induced T cells at various frequencies, low-frequency specific T cells mainly promoted virus clearance. Thus, the induction of specific CD8+ T cells that respond quickly to viral infection, even at low frequencies, is important for vaccine efficacy and can be achieved by SIGN-R1+ medullary macrophage-targeted antigen delivery.

Background: The influx of immigrants into Korea has increased in recent years, affecting Korean society and the healthcare system. This study analyzed the frequency of anxiety and depression in immigrants, which negatively affects their quality of life. Methods: We analyzed data from a 2020 survey on the Health Rights of Migrants and the Improvement of the Medical Security System. Bivariate analyses and a multiple logistic regression model were used to identify the risk factors associated with the presence of anxiety or depression among immigrants. Results: We included 746 immigrants, 55.9% of whom were female. The overall rate of anxiety or depression was 31.77%, with 38.3% in females, which was significantly higher than the 26.62% in males. The frequency of anxiety and depression was also strongly associated with certain immigrant groups, including immigrants of African or Western Asian origin (over 64%); those with student visas (60.53%); those who self-reported poor health (52%), physical or mental disabilities (69.23%), or chronic diseases (58.43%); and those facing difficulties accessing medical services (59.47%). Conclusion: This study showed the frequency of feelings of anxiety or depression and associated risk factors among immigrants. These findings may have implications for policymakers in reducing the likelihood of developing anxiety or depression in the future and improving the quality of life of immigrants in Korea.

Eating behaviors, which are shaped during childhood, are one of the important factors influencing children's growth. This study aimed to investigate the variations in eating behaviors among Vietnamese preschool children aged 3 to 6 years using the Children Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) and their association with anthropometric Z-scores. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 10 172 children from 36 to 72 months old, recruited from three different socioeconomic regions of Hanoi. Differentiation of eating behaviors between two sexes was observed across all age groups, but most obvious at 36 to 48 months of age. The subscales of emotional overeating (EOE), enjoyment of food (EF), and desire to drink (DD) were higher in 60- to 72-month age groups and vice versa for slowness in eating (SE) and emotional undereating (EUE) subscales. Analyses using the general linear model showed that CEBQ subscales were associated with anthropometric Z-scores in both girls and boys.

In an effort to pursue a green synthesis approach, the biosynthesis of nano-silver (nAg) using plant extracts has garnered significant attention, particularly for its antimicrobial resistance and medical applications, which have been the focus of numerous studies. However, there remains a gap in surface catalytic studies, especially regarding the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol. While some studies have addressed catalytic kinetics, thermodynamic aspects have been largely overlooked, leaving the catalytic mechanisms of biosynthesized nAg unclear. In this context, the present work offers a straightforward, eco-friendly, and efficient protocol to obtain nano-silver inspired by Musa paradisiaca L. peel extract. This nAg serves multiple purposes, including antimicrobial resistance and as an eco-catalyst for hydrogenation. Predominantly consisting of zero-valent silver with anisotropic polyhedral shapes, mainly decahedra with an edge length of 50 nm, this nAg demonstrated effective antimicrobial action against both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. More importantly, both kinetic and thermodynamic studies on the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol catalyzed by this bio-inspired nAg revealed that the rate-limiting step is not diffusion-limited. Instead, the adsorbed hydrogen and 4-nitrophenolate react together via electron transfer on the surface of the nAg. The activation energy of 26.24 kJ mol-1 indicates a highly efficient eco-catalyst for such hydrogenation processes.

The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist has been instrumental in reducing surgical deaths by 47% globally since its inception in 2009. A study was conducted to assess the compliance of hospital staff with the Surgical Safety Checklist and identify potential barriers to its implementation at a large tertiary public hospital in Vietnam. The study analysed 135 surgical cases between February and September 2021 using the Pareto principle with eight error categories, including (1) patient identification, (2) equipment, (3) risk management, (4) blood loss, (5) allergy, (6) items left inside the patient, (7) surgical specimens and (8) patient safety and recovery management. Compliance with the Surgical Safety Checklist was between 77% and 93%, with five categories accounting for more than 80% of errors. Periodic monitoring and staff training can improve compliance and help reduce errors for better patient safety. Long-term solutions addressing infrastructure challenges are also crucial.

The emergence of multicancer early detection (MCED) tests holds promise for improving early cancer detection and public health outcomes. However, positive MCED test results require confirmation through recommended cancer diagnostic imaging modalities. To address these challenges, we have developed a consultation and work-up protocol for definitive diagnostic results post MCED testing, named SPOT-MAS. Developed through circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis and in line with professional guidelines and advisory board consensus, this protocol standardizes information to aid general practitioners in accessing, interpreting and managing SPOT-MAS results. Clinical effectiveness is demonstrated through a series of identified cancer cases. Our research indicates that the protocol could empower healthcare professionals to confidently interpret circulating tumor DNA test results for 5 common types of cancer, thereby facilitating the clinical integration of MCED tests.


New tests can now screen for multiple types of cancer early, offering hope for better health outcomes. If one of these tests shows a positive result, doctors need to confirm it with imaging tests. We have developed a guide to help doctors understand and confirm these results. This guide could help healthcare professionals interpret results for five common types of cancer, making it easier to use these tests in regular medical practice.

The pervasive presence of microplastics has emerged as a pressing global environmental concern, posing threats to food security and human health upon infiltrating agricultural soils. These microplastics primarily originate from agricultural activities, including fertilizer inputs, compost-based soil remediation, irrigation, and atmospheric deposition. Their remarkable durability and resistance to biodegradation contribute to their persistent presence in the environment. Microplastics within agricultural soils have prompted concerns regarding their potential impacts on agricultural practices. Functioning as significant pollutants and carriers of microcontaminants within agricultural ecosystems, microplastics and their accompanying contaminants represent ongoing challenges. Within these soil ecosystems, the fate and transportation of microplastics can detrimentally affect plant growth, microbial communities, and, subsequently, human health via the food chain. Specifically, microplastics interact with soil factors, impacting soil health and functionality. Their high adsorption capacity for hazardous microcontaminants exacerbates soil contamination, leading to increased adverse effects on organisms and human health. Due to their tiny size, microplastic debris is easily ingested by soil organisms and can transfer through the food chain, causing physiological and/or mechanical damage. Additionally, microplastics can affect plant growth and have the potential to accumulate and be transported within plants. Efforts to mitigate these impacts are crucial to safeguarding agricultural sustainability and environmental health. Future research should delve into the long-term impacts of environmental aging processes on microplastic debris within agricultural soil ecosystems from various sources, primarily focusing on food security and human beings.

The C. luuana (TD3), C. furfuracea (TD4), C. bidoupensis (TD6), C. sinensis (L.) (TD7), and C. kissii (TD8), have been traditionally used as a health-promoting beverage by local people in Ta Dung, Dak Nong. Despite their potential health benefits, further scientific data on biological and phytochemical properties of these plants is needed. This study aimed to investigate phytochemical and biological properties of five Camellia species extracts, using DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging, copper chelating (Cu-chelator), and tyrosinase inhibition (TI), α-amylase (Al-AI), and α-glucosidase (Al-GI) analyses. Ten compounds were identified using UPLC method, in which catechins (mainly EGCG and catechin (Cat)), were the most prevalent, and followed by chlorogenic acid (ChlA), quercitrin (Querci), rutin, and quercetin (Querce). Multiple factor analysis (MFA) also revealed that TD7, TD3, and TD4 containing high TPC, TFC, EGCG, ChlA, and caffeine were responsible for their high DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activities and TI, Al-AI and Al-GI. TD6 and TD8, possessing elevated levels of Apig, Querce, Rutin, Querce, Cat, and EA, exhibited a high Cu-chelator property, but a weak enzyme inhibition. From all above-mentioned results, the antioxidative and enzyme inhibitory potentials of Camellia species extracts were scientifically demonstrated paving a pathway to develop health supplement in further studies.

The emergence and spread of chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium vivax have necessitated the assessment of alternative blood schizonticidal drugs. In Vietnam, chloroquine-resistant P. vivax malaria has been reported. In an open-label, single-arm trial, the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of pyronaridine-artesunate (Pyramax, PA) was evaluated in Dak Nong province, Vietnam. A 3-day course of PA was administered to adults and children (≥20 kg) infected with P. vivax. Patients also received primaquine (0.25 mg/kg daily for 14 days). PA was well tolerated with transient asymptomatic increases in liver transaminases. The per-protocol proportion of patients with day 42 PCR-unadjusted adequate clinical and parasitological response was 96.0% (95% CI, 84.9%-99.0%, n = 48/50). The median parasite clearance time was 12 h (range, 12-36 h), with a median fever clearance time of 24 h (range, 12-60 h). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as potential genetic markers of reduced drug susceptibility were analyzed in three putative drug resistance markers, Pvcrt-o, Pvmdr1, and PvK12. Insertion at position K10 of the Pvcrt-o gene was found in 74.6% (44/59) of isolates. Pvmdr1 SNPs at Y976F and F1076L were present in 61% (36/59) and 78% (46/59), respectively. Amplification of Pvmdr1 gene (two copies) was found in 5.1% (3/59) of parasite samples. Only 5.1% (3/59) of isolates had mutation 552I of the PvK12 gene. Overall, PA rapidly cleared P. vivax blood asexual stages and was highly efficacious in treating vivax malaria, with no evidence of artemisinin resistance found. PA provides an alternative to chloroquine treatment for vivax malaria in Vietnam. CLINICAL TRIALS: This study is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry as ACTRN12618001429246.

Interprofessional education is acknowledged as an efficacious strategy for fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals, especially in developing countries where interdisciplinarity and cooperation among healthcare practitioners are notably deficient. The present study aimed to investigate the readiness among medical, pharmacy, public health, and nursing faculties for development of an IPE curriculum at a university in Vietnam. Employing a quantitative approach, the revised version of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) questionnaire, comprising 19 items, was utilized to gather data from sixty-nine lecturers, including 26 medicine, 23 pharmacy, 11 public health, and 9 nursing faculties. Total scores and subscores (pertaining to teamwork and collaboration, professional identity, and roles and responsibilities) were subjected to comparison using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Findings revealed a high level of readiness among all faculty members toward IPE with little difference between each faculty. However, nursing lecturers exhibited a more favorable attitude toward the roles and responsibilities associated with IPE in contrast to their counterparts in the medicine faculty (1.89 ± 1.02 vs 3.15 ± 0.63, p = 0.0048). Further study with deep interview methods should be done to explore the barriers of faculty members as well as of the leadership in developing IPE.

This research investigated the in vivo gelation, biodegradation, and drug release efficiency of a novel injectable sensitive drug delivery system for human growth hormone (HGh). This composite system comprises pH- and temperature-sensitive hydrogel, designated as oligomer serine-b-poly(lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactide)-b-oligomer serine (OS-PLA-PEG-PLA-OS) pentablock copolymer, as matrix and electrosprayed HGh-loaded chitosan (HGh@CS) nanoparticles (NPs) as principal material. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of the pH- and temperature-sensitive OS-PLA-PEG-PLA-OS pentablock copolymer hydrogel proved that this copolymer was successfully synthesized. The HGh was encapsulated in chitosan (CS) NPs by an electrospraying system in acetic acid with appropriate granulation parameters. The scanning electron microscopy images and size distribution showed that the HGh@CS NPs formed had an average diameter of 366.1 ± 214.5 nm with a discrete spherical shape and dispersed morphology. The sol-gel transition of complex gel based on HGh@CS NPs and OS-PLA-PEG-PLA-OS pentablock hydrogel was investigated at 15 °C and pH 7.8 in the sol state and gelled at 37 °C and pH 7.4, which is suitable for the physiological conditions of the human body. The HGh release experiment of the composite system was performed in an in vivo environment, which demonstrated the ability to release HGh, and underwent biodegradation within 32 days. The findings of the investigation revealed that the distribution of HGh@CS NPs into the hydrogel matrix not only improved the mechanical properties of the gel matrix but also controlled the drug release kinetics into the systematic bloodstream, which ultimately promotes the desired therapeutic body growth depending on the distinct concentration used.

The quantitative measurement of urinary biomarkers in wastewater has emerged as a robust tool for estimating alcohol and tobacco consumption in populations. In this study, we applied the wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach to compare alcohol and tobacco use between university students and urban inhabitants in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Ethyl sulfate and cotinine serve as markers for alcohol and tobacco use, respectively. Our findings reveal that urban inhabitants aged 15 and above consume 1.56 ± 0.23 mL of pure ethanol and 2.8 ± 0.33 mg of nicotine per day, while university students consume 0.69 ± 0.13 mL of pure alcohol and 1.2 ± 0.2 mg of nicotine per day. This indicates that, on average, students consume less alcohol and tobacco compared with urban adults. A Monte Carlo simulation indicated that, on average, university students in our study smoke 1.5 cigarettes per day, while urban residents aged 15 and above smoke 4.3 cigarettes per day. Considering the smoking prevalence, a student smoker in this study consumes 6.5 cigarettes per day, a level high enough to establish addiction. On the other hand, alcohol use estimation is significantly lower than previous survey-based reports, likely due to degradation within on-site septic tanks. Future research should aim to extend the sampling period to capture seasonal variations and improve the understanding of tobacco and alcohol consumption patterns. The results from this study are crucial for decision-makers in Ho Chi Minh City to develop effective public health strategies and interventions. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Wastewater-based approach is applicable to estimate the tobacco consumption in Ho Chi Minh City. Each current smoker in the urban area of Ho Chi Minh City smokes nearly a package a day. The estimated consumption for student smokers in U-town is 6.5 cigarettes per day, a level high enough to establish addiction. The existence of septic tanks within Vietnam's drainage systems prevents reliable estimation of alcohol consumption for the entire population.

The present study investigates the effects of Er3+ doping content on the microstructure and up-conversion emission properties of CaTiO3: Er3+ phosphors as a potential material in biomedical applications. The CaTiO3: x%Er3+ (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0%) films were synthesized on Ti substrates by a hydrothermal reaction at 200 °C for 24 h. The SEM image showed the formation of cubic nanorod CaTiO3: Er3+ films with a mean edge size value of (1-5) µm. When excited with 980 nm light, the CaTiO3: Er3+ films emitted a strong green band and a weak red band of Er3+ ions located at 543, 661, and 740 nm. The CaTiO3: Er3+ film exhibited excellent surface hydrophilicity with a contact angle of ~zero and good biocompatibility against baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells. CaTiO3: Er3+ films emerge as promising materials for different applications in the biomedical field.

We are reporting a short and convenient pathway for the synthesis of novel ß-carboline-bisindole hybrid compounds from relatively cheap and commercially available chemicals such as tryptamine, dialdehydes and indoles. These newly designed compounds can also be prepared in high yields with the tolerance of many functional groups under mild conditions. Notably, these ß-carboline-bisindole hybrid compounds exhibited some promising applications as anticancer agents against the three common cancer cell lines MCF-7 (breast cancer), SK-LU-1 (lung cancer), and HepG2 (liver cancer). The two best compounds 5 b and 5 g inhibited the aforementioned cell lines with the same IC50 range of the reference Ellipticine at less than 2 µM. A molecular docking study to gain more information about the interactions between the synthesized molecules and the kinase domain of the EGFR was performed. Therefore, this finding can have significant impacts on the development of future research in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery.

Mycoplasma genitalium is an emerging sexually transmitted infection, with increasing rates of macrolide resistance and some ways of treatments being recommended by many countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of M. genitalium infection, M. genitalium co-infection with other sexually transmitted organisms, and the frequency of macrolide antibiotic resistance genotypes identified in urethral specimens collected from male and urethral, vaginal and cervical specimens from female who visited the STIs clinic of HCMC Hospital of Dermato-Venereology, Vietnam. The results obtained positive samples for C. trachomatis was 8.46%, N. gonorrhoeae was 6.28%, and M. genitalium was 5.95%. Fifty-five out of 90 M. genitalium samples were found to have mutations in the 23S rRNA gene associated with macrolide resistance (61.11%). M. genitalium/C. trachomatis co-infection was 6.19%, and M. genitalium/N. gonorrhoeae was 1.22%. The percentage of M. genitalium carrying the macrolide resistance mutant gene co-infected with C. trachomatis accounted for 37.50%. The high prevalence of the M. genitalium mutations associated with macrolide resistance showed the importance of M. genitalium testing.

Dengue virus (DENV) poses a significant threat to global health, infecting approximately 390 million people annually. This virus comprises four serotypes capable of causing severe disease. Genetic analyses are crucial for understanding the epidemiology, evolution, and spread of DENV. Although previous studies have focused on the envelope protein-coding (E) gene, only a few primers can efficiently detect and amplify the viral genes from multiple endemic countries simultaneously. In this study, we designed degenerate primer pairs for each DENV serotype to amplify and sequence the entire E gene, using globally representative sequences for each serotype. These primers were validated using DENV isolates from various Asian countries and demonstrated broad-spectrum detection capabilities and high-quality sequences. The primers provide effective tools for genetic analysis in the regions affected by dengue, aiding strain identification and epidemiological studies during outbreaks.

Three organoplatinum(II) complexes bearing natural aryl-olefin and quinoline derivatives, namely, [4-meth-oxy-5-(2-meth-oxy-2-oxoeth-oxy)-2-(prop-2-en-1-yl)phen-yl](quinolin-8-olato)platinum(II), [Pt(C13H15O4)(C9H6NO)], (I), [4-meth-oxy-5-(2-oxo-2-propoxyeth-oxy)-2-(prop-2-en-1-yl)phen-yl](quinoline-2-carboxy-l-ato)platinum(II), [Pt(C15H19O4)(C10H6NO2)], (II), and chlorido-[4-meth-oxy-5-(2-oxo-2-propoxyeth-oxy)-2-(prop-2-en-1-yl)phen-yl](quinoline)-plat-inum(II), [Pt(C15H19O4)Cl(C9H7N)], (III), were synthesized and structurally characterized by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the cyclo-platinated aryl-olefin coordinates with PtII via the carbon atom of the phenyl ring and the C=Colefinic group. The deprotonated 8-hy-droxy-quinoline (C9H6NO) and quinoline-2-carb-oxy-lic acid (C10H6NO2) coordinate with the PtII atom via the N and O atoms in complexes (I) and (II) while the quinoline (C9H7N) coordinates via the N atom in (III). Moreover, the coordinating N atom in complexes (I)-(III) is in the cis position compared to the C=Colefinic group. The crystal packing is characterized by C-H⋯π, C-H⋯O [for (II) and (III)], C-H⋯Cl [for (III) and π-π [for (I)] inter-actions.

This study attempts to reveal antioxidants in the plant parts of Myxopyrum smilacifolium (Wall.) Blume using antioxidant assays and LC-MS/MS analysis. Methanol is the most effective solvent for collecting antioxidants. The roots-derived methanol extract demonstrates the greatest antioxidant activity, corresponding to the extremely low IC50 values of 16.39 µg/mL and 19.80 µg/mL for DPPH and ABTS radicals, respectively. The high phenolic and flavonoid contents are the primary reason for outstanding total antioxidant capacity (TAC; i.e. 247.73 ± 1.62 mg GA/g or 163.93 ± 0.83 mg AS/g) of the root extract. LC-MS/MS quantification of five phenolic compounds reveals exceptionally high amounts of quercetin and luteolin in the root extract, ranging from 238.86 ± 5.74 to 310.99 ± 1.44 µg/g and from 201.49 ± 7.84 to 234.10 ± 2.54 µg/g, respectively, in the root-derived methanol extract. The achievement highlights M. smilacifolium as a promising source of natural antioxidants for large-scale medical applications.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: While programs had been implemented by both the government and non-governmental organizations to address inequity in maternal health care in mountainous areas in Vietnam, the expected outcomes were not fully reached due to existing barriers from health workers mainly providing the health services. This study explores prominent issues faced by health workers in delivering maternal care in Cao Bang, focusing on their impact on the local population's daily lives and overall development. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with 15 participants working as health managers, commune health workers, commune midwives, and village health workers in selected communes of a mountainous and border district located in the Northeast Cao Bang province. RESULTS: Main barriers include the incompetent healthcare workforce, ineffective use of facility resources, lack of work commitment, and unscientific traditional beliefs. CONCLUSION: Future community programs should implement strict policies, defined rights, and clear responsibilities for health workers handling these obstacles to optimize the quality of maternal health care services in these remote areas.

The complex [Pt(C9H6NO)Cl(C2H4)], (I), was synthesized and structurally characterized by ESI mass spectrometry, IR, NMR spectroscopy, DFT calculations and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the deprotonated 8-hy-droxy-quinoline (C9H6NO) coordinates with the PtII atom via the N and O atoms while the ethyl-ene coordinates in the η2 manner and in the trans position compared to the coordinating N atom. The crystal packing is characterized by C-H⋯O, C-H⋯π, Cl⋯π and Pt⋯π inter-actions. Complex (I) showed high selective activity against Lu-1 and Hep-G2 cell lines with IC50 values of 0.8 and 0.4 µM, respectively, 54 and 33-fold more active than cisplatin. In particular, complex (I) is about 10 times less toxic to normal cells (HEK-293) than cancer cells Lu-1 and Hep-G2. Furthermore, the reaction of complex (I) with guanine at the N7 position was proposed and investigated using the DFT method. The results indicated that replacement of the ethyl-ene ligand with guanine is thermodynamically more favorable than the Cl ligand and that the reaction occurs via two consecutive steps, namely the replacement of ethyl-ene with H2O and the water with the guanine mol-ecule.
