RESUMO

Miniature free-space optical beams, originating from on-chip microstructures, are usually measured and quoted without reference to a particular polarization state. We develop an automated platform to characterize tightly focused free-space optical beams in three dimensions. We present a detailed description of each subsystem including the calibration and test procedure. We demonstrate how amplitude and phase are measured at sub-wavelength resolution using a cleaved fiber with a heterodyne reference. Further analysis provides information about the phase and intensity profile of the beam with regards to its polarization content and spatial confinement. We perform a proof-of-concept experiment for a custom waveguide-coupled micro-mirror. The work opens new possibilities for rapid analysis of micro-mirrors in prototyping and optimization of integrated optical systems.

RESUMO

This article provides a careful comparison between the electric and mechanical excitation of a tuning fork for shear force feedback in scanning probe microscopy, an analysis not found in present literature. A setup is designed and demonstrated for robust signal and noise measurements at comparable levels of physical movement of the probe. Two different signal amplification methods, combined with two excitation ways provide three possible configurations. For each method a quantitative analysis, supported by analytical elaboration and numerical simulations, is provided. Finally, it is shown that in practical circumstances electric excitation followed by detection with a transimpedance amplifier provides the best result.

RESUMO

Silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides need to be thick to show low dispersion which is desired for nonlinear applications. However, high quality thick SiN produced by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) contains high internal stress, causing it to crack. Crack-free wafers with thick SiN can be produced by adding crack barriers. We demonstrate the use of dicing trenches as a simple single-step method to produce high quality (loss<0.5 dB/cm) crack-free SiN. We show Kerr-comb generation in a ring resonator to highlight the high quality and low dispersion of the waveguides.

RESUMO

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have great potential as biomarkers since their composition and concentration in biofluids are disease state dependent and their cargo can contain disease-related information. Large tumor-derived EVs (tdEVs, >1 µm) in blood from cancer patients are associated with poor outcome, and changes in their number can be used to monitor therapy effectiveness. Whereas, small tumor-derived EVs (<1 µm) are likely to outnumber their larger counterparts, thereby offering better statistical significance, identification and quantification of small tdEVs are more challenging. In the blood of cancer patients, a subpopulation of EVs originate from tumor cells, but these EVs are outnumbered by non-EV particles and EVs from other origin. In the Dutch NWO Perspectief Cancer-ID program, we developed and evaluated detection and characterization techniques to distinguish EVs from non-EV particles and other EVs. Despite low signal amplitudes, we identified characteristics of these small tdEVs that may enable the enumeration of small tdEVs and extract relevant information. The insights obtained from Cancer-ID can help to explore the full potential of tdEVs in the clinic.

RESUMO

This work is focused on the role of temperature in the de-mixing of absorbance spectra measured in mixed aqueous Na2SO4 and NaNO3 solutions. First, the influence of temperature on the absorbance spectrum of demineralized water was determined. Second, the absorbance spectra of five separate electrolytes (NaNO2, NaNO3, CaCl2, K2CO3, and NaOH) at three temperatures (4°C, 25°C, and 50°C) for concentrations ranging from 0.0625 M to 0.5 M were examined. These five electrolytes show similar temperature dependencies. Finally, absorbance spectra of mixed solutions were investigated at temperatures of 5°C, 15°C, 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C for concentrations ranging from 0.0625 M to 0.5 M per electrolyte in the mixture. The spectral window from 650 to 1100 nm was utilized to observe the ionic and temperature influences on the vibrational modes of the OH bond in the solvent molecules. The effects of dissolving Na2SO4 and NaNO3 are nonlinearly cumulative at lower temperatures indicating extended alteration of the water structure beyond the first hydration shell. A similar trend was observed for a mixture of Na2CO3 and NaCl. Furthermore, it was found that higher temperatures are better for recovering the separate component absorption signatures of an electrolyte mixture. The near-infrared spectral regime is well suited for integrated sensing, and therefore these results can help in designing an integrated sensor to identify inorganic species in water.

RESUMO

A novel and simple approach to optical wavelength measurement is presented in this paper. The working principle is demonstrated using a tunable waveguide micro ring resonator and single photodiode. The initial calibration is done with a set of known wavelengths and resonator tunings. The combined spectral sensitivity function of the resonator and photodiode at each tuning voltage was modeled by a neural network. For determining the unknown wavelengths, the resonator was tuned with a set of heating voltages and the corresponding photodiode signals were collected. The unknown wavelength was estimated, based on the collected photodiode signals, the calibrated neural networks, and an optimization algorithm. The wavelength estimate method provides a high spectral precision of about 8 pm (5 · 10(-6) at 1550 nm) in the wavelength range between 1549 nm to 1553 nm. A higher precision of 5 pm (3 · 10(-6)) is achieved in the range between 1550.3 nm to 1550.8 nm, which is a factor of five improved compared to a simple lookup of data. The importance of our approach is that it strongly simplifies the optical system and enables optical integration. The approach is also of general importance, because it may be applicable to all wavelength monitoring devices which show an adjustable wavelength response.

RESUMO

This article demonstrates a quick and easy way of quantifying the performance of a vibration-isolated platform. We measure the vibration transfer from floor to table using background noise excitation from the floor. As no excitation device is needed, our setup only requires two identical sensors (in our case, low noise accelerometers), a data acquisition system, and processing software. Background noise excitation from the floor has the additional advantage that any non-linearity in the suspension system relevant to the actual vibration amplitudes will be taken into account. Measurement time is typically a few minutes, depending on the amount of background noise. The (coherent) transfer of the vibrations in the floor to the platform, as well as the (non-coherent) acoustical noise pick-up by the platform are measured. Since we use calibrated sensors, the absolute value of the vibration levels is established and can be expressed in vibration criterion curves. Transfer measurements are shown and discussed for two pneumatic isolated optical tables, a spring suspension system, and a simple foam suspension system.

RESUMO

Identifying complex molecules often entails detection of multiple vibrational resonances, especially in the case of mixtures. Phase shaping of broadband pump and probe pulses allows for the coherent superposition of several resonances, such that specific molecules can be detected directly and with high selectivity. Our particular implementation of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy and imaging employs broadband pump and probe fields in combination with a narrowband Stokes field. We describe our approach for combining spectral phase shaping and closed-loop optimization strategies to perform chemically-selective microscopy. To predict the optimal excitation profile we employ evolutionary algorithms that use the vibrational phase responses of five distinct molecules with overlapping resonances and investigate the effect of phase instability on the optimization. We have recently shown that modified polynomials and orthogonal rational functions can give rise to improved contours for CARS fitness landscapes. Now, by considering the landscapes associated with different basis sets, we introduce two figures of merit to quantitatively rank basis functions in terms of their "appropriateness" for modeling nonlinear phase-shaped processes.

RESUMO

We present a novel laser mode locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra-short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous-wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group-velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse shape. The set of frequencies on which the laser oscillates, and therefore the pulse repetition rate, is controlled by the geometry of resonator-internal optical elements, not by the cavity length. Finally, the bandwidth of the laser can be controlled by switching gain modules on and off. This scheme offers a route to mode-locked lasers with high average output power, repetition rates that can be scaled into the THz range, and a bandwidth that can be dynamically controlled. The approach is particularly suited for implementation using semiconductor diode laser arrays.

RESUMO

In biological samples the resonant coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering signal of less abundant constituents can be overwhelmed by the nonresonant background, preventing detection of those molecules. We demonstrate a method to obtain the phase of the oscillators in the focal volume that allows discrimination of those hidden molecules. The phase is measured with respect to the local excitation fields using a cascaded phase-preserving chain. It is measured point-by-point and takes into account refractive index changes in the sample, phase curvature over the field-of-view, and interferometric instabilities. The detection of the phase of the vibrational motion can be regarded as a vibrational extension of the linear (refractive index) phase contrast microscopy introduced by Zernike around 1933.

RESUMO

We analyze the diffraction characteristics of dielectric gratings that feature a high index grating layer, and devise, through rigorous numerical calculations, large bandwidth, highly efficient, high dispersion dielectric gratings in reflection, transmission, and immersed transmission geometry. A dielectric TIR grating is suggested, whose -1dB spectral bandwidth is doubled as compared to its fused silica equivalent. The short wavelength diffraction efficiency is additionally improved by allowing for slanted lamella. The grating surpasses a blazed gold grating over the full octave. An immersed transmission grating is devised, whose -1dB bandwidth is tripled as compared to its fused silica equivalent, and that surpasses an equivalent classical transmission grating over nearly the full octave. A transmission grating in the classical scattering geometry is suggested, that features a buried high index layer. This grating provides effectively 100% diffraction efficiency at its design wavelength, and surpasses an equivalent fused silica grating over the full octave.

RESUMO

In this article we show that heterodyne CARS, based on a controlled and stable phase-preserving chain, can be used to measure amplitude and phase information of molecular vibration modes. The technique is validated by a comparison of the imaginary part of the heterodyne CARS spectrum to the spontaneous Raman spectrum of polyethylene. The detection of the phase allows for rejection of the non-resonant background from the data. The resulting improvement of the signal to noise ratio is shown by measurements on a sample containing lipid.

RESUMO

By spectral phase shaping of both the pump and probe pulses in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy we demonstrate the extraction of the frequencies, bandwidths and relative cross sections of vibrational lines. We employ a tunable broadband Ti:Sapphire laser synchronized to a ps-Nd:YVO mode locked laser. A high resolution spectral phase shaper allows for spectroscopy with a precision better than 1 cm(-1) in the high frequency region around 3000 cm(-1). We also demonstrate how new spectral phase shaping strategies can amplify the resonant features of isolated vibrations to such an extent that spectroscopy and microscopy can be done at high resolution, on the integrated spectral response without the need for a spectrograph.

RESUMO

We report the near-field observation of the phase shifts associated with total internal reflection on a glass-air interface and surface plasmon resonance on a glass-gold-air system. The phase of the evanescent waves on glass and gold surfaces, as a function of incident angle, is measured using a phase-sensitive Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM) and shows a good agreement with theory.

RESUMO

We demonstrate heterodyne detection of CARS signals using a cascaded phase-preserving chain to generate the CARS input wavelengths and a coherent local oscillator. The heterodyne amplification by the local oscillator reveals a window for shot noise limited detection before the signal-to-noise is limited by amplitude fluctuations. We demonstrate an improvement in sensitivity by more than 3 orders of magnitude for detection using a photodiode. This will enable CARS microscopy to reveal concentrations below the current mMolar range.

RESUMO

We demonstrate locking of a high power broad area laser diode to a single frequency using holographic feedback from a photorefractive polymer thin-film device for the first time. A four-wave mixing setup is used to generate feedback for the broad area diode at the wavelength of the single frequency source (Ti:Sapphire laser) while the spatial distribution adapts to the preferred profile of the broad area diode. The result is an injection-locked broad area diode emitting with a linewidth comparable to the Ti:Sapphire laser.

RESUMO

We demonstrate what is believed to be the first phase-coherent locking of a high-power broad-area diode to a single-frequency master laser. We use photorefractive double phase conjugation to lock the diode in a self-optimized complex spatial mode while the photorefractive crystal diffracts that complex mode in a near-diffraction-limited beam.

RESUMO

We report on the concept, generation, and first observations of focused surface plasmons on shaped gratings. The grating patterns are designed to realize focusing and directing through noncollinear phasematching. The plasmons are generated on patterned gold surfaces, and the plasmon propagation is observed using phase-sensitive photon scanning tunneling microscopy (PSTM) to extract the propagation pattern, direction, and wavelength.

RESUMO

We present the first experimental results of a technique called photoionization microscopy. Photoelectrons ejected in threshold photoionization of Xe are detected in a velocity map imaging apparatus, and interferences between various trajectories by which the electron moves from the atom to the detector are observed. The structure of the interference pattern, which contains the transverse component of the electronic wave function, evolves smoothly with the excess energy above the saddle point. The main observed features are interpreted within the framework of the semiclassical approximation.
