RESUMO

Rhinovirus (RV) is the leading pathogen causing childhood wheezing, with rhinovirus C (RV-C) species reported to cause asthma exacerbation. Allele A of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) CDHR3_rs6967330 upregulates epithelial expression of RV-C receptors which results in more severe asthma exacerbations in children. Nevertheless, there are limited data on interactions between CDHR3 variants and their impact on severity of RV-related pediatric respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Medical records of RV-related RTIs in children aged below 18 years who were hospitalized in two public hospitals in 2015-2016 were independently reviewed by two paediatricians. Archived nasopharyngeal aspirates were retrieved for RV detection and sequencing as well as CDHR3 genotyping. HaploView v.5.0 and generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) analysis were employed for haplotypic assignment and gene-environment interaction analyses. Among 1019 studied cases, our results confirmed the relationship between RV-C species and more severe RTIs. Besides the top risk variant rs6967330-A, we identified rs140154310-T to be associated with RV-C susceptibility under the additive model [odds ratio (OR) 2.53, 95% CI 1.15-5.56; P = 0.021]. Rs140154310 was associated with wheezing illness (OR 2.38, 95% CI 1.12-5.04; P = 0.024), with such association being stronger in subjects who wheezed due to RV-C infections (OR 2.71, 95% CI 1.32-5.58; P = 0.007). Haplotype GAG constructed from rs4730125, rs6967330, and rs73195665 was associated with increased risk of RV-C infection (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.11-2.65; P = 0.016) and oxygen supplementation (OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.13-3.30; P = 0.016). GMDR analyses revealed epistatic interaction between rs140154310 and rs6967330 of CDHR3 for RV-C infection (P = 0.001), RV-C-associated lower RTI (P = 0.004), and RV-C-associated wheeze (P = 0.007). There was synergistic gene-environmental interaction between rs3887998 and RV-C for more severe clinical outcomes (P < 0.001). To conclude, rs140154310-T is another risk variant for RV-C susceptibility and more severe RTIs. Synergistic epistatic interaction is found between CDHR3 SNPs and RV-C for RTI severity, which is likely mediated by susceptibility to RV-C. Haplotypic analysis and GMDR should be included in identifying prediction models of CDHR3 for childhood asthma and RTIs. IMPORTANCE This case-control study investigated the interaction between CDHR3 genotypes and rhinovirus (RV) species on disease severity in Hong Kong children hospitalized for respiratory tract infection (RTI). There were synergistic effects between RV-C and CDHR3 SNPs for RTI severity, which was mainly driven by RV-C. Specifically, rs6967330 and rs140154310 alone and their epistatic interaction were associated with RV-C-related and severe RTIs in our subjects. Therefore, genotyping of CDHR3 SNPs may help physicians formulate prediction models for severity of RV-associated RTIs.

RESUMO

Cascade Si LVV Auger decays following KL(23)L(23) Auger transitions have been measured in SiF(4) molecule using an electron spectrometer combined with monochromatized undulator radiation. Molecular cascade processes from the two 2p holes states largely generate wide band structures in the spectra due to sequential electron emission leading to multiple valence holes. However, a peak with high yield is observed for the first time at about 103 eV, an energy being considerably higher than the energies of the normal LVV Auger electron, in the instance of the resonant excitation of Si 1s electron into the vacant molecular orbital. This peak is presumed to originate from the participator decay from the state with two 2p holes and one excited electron into the state with one 2p hole and one valence hole. A similar peak with less intensity is detected in the photoexcitation of the 1s electron into a Rydberg orbital. After the normal KL(23)L(23) Auger transition, the resultant cascade spectrum shows several peaks, e.g., 61 eV, 76 eV, and 82 eV. The former two peaks are assigned to the Auger transitions of Si atoms produced through molecular ion dissociation after cascade decays, and the latter is probably ascribed to the second step Auger decay into states having a 2p hole together with two valence holes.

RESUMO

The red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) was intentionally introduced from the United States to Japan as a pet in the 1950s and has become established throughout much of the country. We examined red-eared slider turtles from two localities in Japan for foreign parasitic helminths. Consequently, a total of seven species of helminths were found: two monogeneans (Neopolystoma exhamatum and Polystomoides japonicum), three digeneans (Spirorchisartericola, Spi.elegans and Telorchis clemmydis) and two nematodes (Serpinema microcephalum and Falcaustra wardi). Of these, three helminths are alien to Japan-Spi.artericola, Spi. elegans and F. wardi-which represent the first report of their presence in the red-eared slider turtle from Japan.

RESUMO

In an extension of maternal question-asking to Japanese children during free play and at meal time each of 20 mother-child dyads was videotaped at home. The mothers of children with Down syndrome asked more questions during free play at meal time, and for the sum of these two. Also, they produced more requests for information during free play and for combined conditions and fewer clarification requests during free play. The results were compared to those of the previous study of Taiwanese mothers.

RESUMO

To study maternal question-asking of Taiwanese children during free play and at meal time each mother-child dyad was videotaped at home. The mothers of children with Down syndrome asked more questions across different types of question during free play, at meal time, and for the sum of these two. Although no group difference was found for producing each type of question during free play, these 20 mothers asked more directive questions at meal time. Combined conditions analysis showed they used more directive questions and fewer requests for clarification than the 20 mothers of children with no disability.

RESUMO

Time-dependent sorption of imidacloprid [1-[(6-chloro-3-pyridinyl)-methyl]-N-nitro-2-imidazolidinimine] was investigated with two German soils (sandy loam and silt loam). Soil batches containing the active ingredient (0.33 mg/kg) were incubated for 100 days. After selected aging periods, imidacloprid desorbed by 0.01 M CaCl(2) (soluble phase) and by organic solvents (methanol and acetonitrile) and reflux extraction with acidified methanol (sorbed phase) was determined. Calculated sorption coefficients K(d) and K(oc) increased by a factor of 3.2-3.8 during 100 days of aging. Additionally, the time-dependent sorption was verified by a column leaching experiment with the aged soil. The amount of imidacloprid in column eluates (0.01 M CaCl(2)) decreased compared to total recovered by a factor of approximately 2. Sorption of imidacloprid thus increased with residence time in soil, making it more resistant to leaching. These results are further information to explain the low leaching potential of imidacloprid in the field, despite its high water solubility.

RESUMO

A human tail is a rare anatomical curiosity. A case of a human tail associated with lipomyelomeningocele is reported. The made subject was born, by breech delivery, at the 39th-week with a 3,008 g body weight. He was admitted to our hospital because of the presence of a human tail and subcutaneous mass in the midline lumbosacral region. The tail was about 7.5 cm in length and 2 cm in diameter. It was elastic and covered by normal skin. No systemic anomaly was found. Spina bifida below L5 was revealed, and no bony shadow was found on the plain X-ray film. CT scan showed a low density area in the spinal canal between L3 and lower sacral region that extended into the tail through the spina bifida. MRI also revealed intraspinal long T2 mass which was attached to the spinal cord and extended into the tail. Myelogram indicated intradural extramedullary mass below the L3 level. Surgical treatment was performed on the 3rd month of life with a diagnosis of a human tail with lipomyelomeningocele. At surgery, the tail was found to consist mainly of lipomatous tissue which extended subcutaneously and entered the spinal canal through the spina bifida. The tail and subcutaneous lipomatous tissue were totally excised. The capsule of subcutaneous lipomatous tissue was followed circumferentially down into the spinal canal, and found to be transformed to arachnoid membrane. Intradural lipomatous tissue was excised piece by piece, leaving only a small remnant attached to the conus medullaris to preserve sacral nerve root function.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
