RESUMO

To examine reverse atrial electrical remodeling in patients with aortic stenosis (AS) after trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In 65 consecutive patients with severe AS (83 ± 4 years, 47 (72.3%) females), we analyzed ECG records for the P wave duration (PWD) in lead II and P-terminal force (PTFV1) in V1, and measured cardiac dimensions and function by echocardiography (ECHO) following TAVR. Biomarkers were measured to assess myocardial injury by TAVR. TAVR was successfully performed without major complications: the aortic valve area increased from 0.62 ± 0.14 cm2 to 1.52 ± 0.24cm2, and the trans-aortic pressure gradient decreased from 58.4 ± 15.9 mmHg to 15.0 ± 19.6 mmHg. PWD and PTFV increased immediately after TAVR and returned to the pre-TAVR levels on the next day. Then, the PWD declined toward 6 months after TAVR non-significantly in all patients, but significantly in 25 patients with baseline PWD ≥ 130 ms (P = 0.039). PTFV1 showed no long-term change. Improvement was observed in the ejection fraction, all thickness of the left ventricle and in the left atrial dimensions on ECHO. After recovery from transient aggravation by TAVR procedure, PWD reversed slowly, and the change was significant in those with baseline PWD ≥ 130 ms while change in PTFV1 was not significant at 6 months of follow-up. ECHO showed a reversal of remodeling in the left ventricle and in the left atrial dimension after TAVR.

Soybean oil is the second most produced edible vegetable oil and is used for many edible and industrial materials. Unfortunately, it has the disadvantage of 'reversion flavor' under photooxidative conditions, which produces an off-odor and decreases the quality of edible oil. Reversion flavor and off-odor are caused by minor fatty acids in the triacylglycerol of soybean oil known as furan fatty acids, which produce 3-methyl-2,4-nonanedione (3-MND) upon photooxidation. As a solution to this problem, a reduction in furan fatty acids leads to a decrease in 3-MND, resulting in a reduction in the off-odor induced by light exposure. However, there are no reports on the genes related to the biosynthesis of furan fatty acids in soybean oil. In this study, four mutant lines showing low or no furan fatty acid levels in soybean seeds were isolated from a soybean mutant library. Positional cloning experiments and homology search analysis identified two genes responsible for furan fatty acid biosynthesis in soybean: Glyma.20G201400 and Glyma.04G054100. Ectopic expression of both genes produced furan fatty acids in transgenic soybean hairy roots. The structure of these genes is different from that of the furan fatty acid biosynthetic genes in photosynthetic bacteria. Homologs of these two group of genes are widely conserved in the plant kingdom. The purified oil from the furan fatty acid mutant lines had lower amounts of 3-MND and reduced off-odor after light exposure, compared with oil from the wild-type.

RESUMO

Single-shot optical imaging based on ultrashort lasers has revealed nonrepetitive processes in subnanosecond timescales beyond the recording range of conventional high-speed cameras. However, nanosecond photography without sacrificing short exposure time and image quality is still missing because of the gap in recordable timescales between ultrafast optical imaging and high-speed electronic cameras. Here, we demonstrate nanosecond photography and ultrawide time-range high-speed photography using a spectrum circuit that produces interval-tunable pulse trains while keeping short pulse durations. We capture a shock wave propagating through a biological cell with a 1.5-ns frame interval and 44-ps exposure time while suppressing image blur. Furthermore, we observe femtosecond laser processing over multiple timescales (25-ps, 2.0-ns, and 1-ms frame intervals), showing that the plasma generated at the picosecond timescale affects subsequent shock wave formation at the nanosecond timescale. Our technique contributes to accumulating data of various fast processes for analysis and to analyzing multi-timescale phenomena as a series of physical processes.

This study investigates a cantilever-based pressure sensor that can achieve a resolution of approximately 0.2 mPa, over the frequency range of 0.1-250 Hz. A piezoresistive cantilever with ultra-high acoustic compliance is used as the sensing element in the proposed pressure sensor. We achieved a cantilever with a sensitivity of approximately 40 times higher than that of the previous cantilever device by realizing an ultrathin (340 nm thick) structure with large pads and narrow hinges. Based on the measurement results, the proposed pressure sensor can measure acoustic signals with frequencies as low as 0.1 Hz. The proposed pressure sensor can be used to measure low-frequency pressure and sound, which is crucial for various applications, including photoacoustic-based gas/chemical sensing and monitoring of physiological parameters and natural disasters. We demonstrate the measurement of heart sounds with a high SNR of 58 dB. We believe the proposed microphone will be used in various applications, such as wearable health monitoring, monitoring of natural disasters, and realization of high-resolution photoacoustic-based gas sensors. We successfully measured the first (S1) and second (S2) cardiac sounds with frequencies of 7-100 Hz and 20-45 Hz, respectively.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The risk of local recurrence might be low in pT1 colorectal carcinoma with a tumor vertical margin (VM) ≥500 µm. We investigated the relationship between endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) findings and VM in cases with colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) categorized as Type 2B according to the Japan NBI Expert Team (JNET) classification. METHODS: We analyzed 179 JNET Type 2B colorectal tumors resected by ESD at Hiroshima University Hospital from January 2010 to May 2021. The distance from the tumor invasive front to the muscle layer on EUS was defined as the tumor-free distance (EUS-TFD) and classified as Type I (EUS-TFD ≥1 mm) and II (<1 mm). We investigated the relationship between EUS-TFD and VM and analyzed the predictive factors for VM ≥500 µm. RESULTS: EUS-TFD Type I was diagnosed in 133 (74.3%) lesions: VM ≥500 µm (114, 85.7%); VM <500 µm (19, 14.3%); and VM positive (VM1) (0, 0%). Type II was diagnosed in 46 (25.7%) lesions: VM ≥500 µm (14, 30.5%); VM <500 µm (22, 47.8%); and VM1 (10, 21.7%). In the EUS-TFD Type I cases, 84.5% and 87.8% were protruded and superficial types; whereas for Type II cases, these were 38.9% and 25%, respectively. EUS-TFD classification (Type I), scope operability (good), submucosal invasion depth (<2000 µm), histology at the deepest invasive portion (favorable), and degree of fibrosis (F0/F1) were significant predictors of VM ≥500 µm. CONCLUSIONS: In JNET Type 2B lesions, EUS-TFD classification is a novel diagnostic indicator to predict VM ≥500 µm in ESD preoperatively.

In recent years, augmented reality (AR) technologies have been widespread for supporting various kinds of tasks, by superimposing useful information on the users' view of the real environments. In endoscopic diagnosis, AR systems can be helpful as an aid in presenting information to endoscopists who have their hands full. In this paper, we propose a system that can superimpose shapes, which are reconstructed from an endoscope image, onto the field of view. The feature of the proposed system is that it reconstructs 3D shapes from the images captured by the endoscope and superimposes them onto the real views. As a result, the superimposed view allows the doctor to keep operating the endoscope while observing the patient's internal body with additional information. The proposed system is composed of the reconstruction module and the display module. The reconstruction module is for acquiring 3D shapes based on an active stereo method. In particular, we propose a novel projection pattern that can reconstruct wide areas of the endoscopic view. The display module shows the 3D shape obtained by the reconstructed module, superimposing on the field of view. In the experiments, we show that it is possible to perform a wide range of dense 3D reconstructions using the new projection patterns. In addition, we confirmed the usefulness of the AR system by interviewing medical doctors.

Postinfarction ventricular septal rupture (VSR) remains an important and life-threatening complication of myocardial infarction (MI). Although several techniques have improved surgical outcomes of postinfarction VSR, the treatment is still challenging with a high mortality rate. In addition, it is well known that a postoperative residual shunt after VSR repair is associated with poor outcomes; however, late outcomes involving patients with a residual shunt after VSR repair are lacking. This paper presents the early and late outcomes of patients who underwent the triple patch technique to repair a VSR and the usefulness in reducing a postoperative residual shunt. The main process of this technique is that the patch is gently placed on the myocardium with over and over suture and is firmly attached using glue. Therefore, the triple patch technique is simple and easy to perform, and is designed to minimize residual shunt and exclude infarcted myocardium. In the present keynote lecture, we describe our surgical technique and the results of VSR repair.

Overexpression of the vitamin D3-inactivating enzyme CYP24A1 (cytochrome P450 family 24 subfamily and hereafter referred to as CYP24) can cause chronic kidney diseases, osteoporosis, and several types of cancers. Therefore, CYP24 inhibition has been considered a potential therapeutic approach. Vitamin D3 mimetics and small molecule inhibitors have been shown to be effective, but nonspecific binding, drug resistance, and potential toxicity limit their effectiveness. We have identified a novel 70-nt DNA aptamer-based inhibitor of CYP24 by utilizing the competition-based aptamer selection strategy, taking CYP24 as the positive target protein and CYP27B1 (the enzyme catalyzing active vitamin D3 production) as the countertarget protein. One of the identified aptamers, Apt-7, showed a 5.8-fold higher binding affinity with CYP24 than the similar competitor CYP27B1. Interestingly, Apt-7 selectively inhibited CYP24 (the relative CYP24 activity decreased by 39.1 ± 3% and showed almost no inhibition of CYP27B1). Furthermore, Apt-7 showed cellular internalization in CYP24-overexpressing A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells via endocytosis and induced endogenous CYP24 inhibition-based antiproliferative activity in cancer cells. We also employed high-speed atomic force microscopy experiments and molecular docking simulations to provide a single-molecule explanation of the aptamer-based CYP24 inhibition mechanism. The novel aptamer identified in this study presents an opportunity to generate a new probe for the recognition and inhibition of CYP24 for biomedical research and could assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: New image-enhanced endoscopy (IEE), blue Light Imaging (LED-BLI) is launched in USA and Europe, whereas Blue Laser Imaging (Laser-BLI) is available only Asian and some countries. No studies have directly compared the diagnostic accuracy of narrow band imaging (NBI), Laser-BLI and LED-BLI for colorectal tumors. The present study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the three methods for colorectal tumor using the NBI international colorectal endoscopic (NICE) classification and the Japanese NBI Expert Team (JNET) classifications. METHODS: This was a multi-center evaluator-blinded, randomized control trial of patients who underwent endoscopic colorectal tumor resection. The patients were randomly assigned to NBI, Laser-BLI or LED-BLI. Cropped images were sent to blinded external evaluators and diagnosed according to NICE and JNET classifications. The diagnostic accuracy of each endoscopy system was compared with non-inferiority test. RESULTS: A total of 619 colonic tumors were resected from 230 patients and evaluated by external four evaluators. The diagnostic accuracy of NBI for NICE 1, NICE 2, NICE 3 was 90.6%, 90.3% and 99.5%, respectively and for JNET 1, JNET 2A, JNET 2B and JNET 3, it was 94.6%, 72.0%, 79.2% and 99.1%, respectively. In non-inferiority test, Laser-BLI and LED-BLI revealed non-inferiority to NBI in all NICE and JNET categories (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Laser-BLI and LED-BLI had high diagnostic accuracy and non-inferiority of NBI, especially for hyperplastic polyp/sessile serrated lesion and low-grade dysplasia. This is first trial to compare the diagnostic accuracy with NBI, Laser-BLI and LED-BLI and useful to understand the position of each IEE. This trial was registered as UMIN000032107.

The objective of this case report is to highlight a rare case of infectious thoracic aortic aneurysm and purulent pericarditis simultaneously in a 56-year-old woman. The patient complained of left anterior chest pain and contrast computed tomography (CT) revealed infectious thoracic aortic aneurysm and purulent pericarditis accompanied by massive pericardial effusion. She underwent a pericardial drainage immediately, and antibiotic treatment was initiated. Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was detected in blood and pericardial fluid cultures. On day eight of hospitalization, contrast CT scan showed enlargement of the aortic aneurysm. Therefore, total arch replacement was performed on day 10 using rifampicin-soaked graft. After surgery, antibiotic treatment was continued, till inflammatory markers became negative. She was discharged on day 66 without developing anastomotic pseudoaneurysms nor constrictive pericarditis.

Objectives: There are some endoscopic resection (ER) methods for neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), however, which method is most useful remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of different ER techniques, such as conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (cEMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), and endoscopic submucosal resection with a ligation device (ESMR-L) for rectal NETs. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 96 consecutive patients with 102 rectal NETs of less than 10 mm in diameter who underwent ER between January 2001 and December 2019 at Hiroshima University Hospital. We compared the clinical outcomes of each ER method (cEMR 60 lesions, ESD 21 lesions, and ESMR-L 21 lesions), divided according to the treatment periods, and evaluated the risk factors for vertical margin (VM) positivity in relation to clinicopathological and endoscopic characteristics. Results: As for the mean procedure time, ESD took significantly longer to perform than the other methods. The histological complete resection rate was 80% (48/60) for cEMR, 85.7% (18/21) for ESD, and 100% (21/21) for ESMR-L, and the VM positive rate was 20% (12/60) for cEMR, 14.3% (3/21) for ESD, and 0% (0/21) for ESMR-L, with no significant difference. However, the tumor-front-to-VM distance was significantly longer in the ESMR-L group than in the cEMR and ESD groups. cEMR and ESD were both significant risk factors for VM positivity. No perforation or local recurrence was observed in all methods. Conclusions: ESMR-L is the most useful ER method for small rectal NETs.

Objectives: A single-balloon overtube (SBO) can improve poor scope operability during colonic endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). We aimed to evaluate the clinical usefulness of SBO for ESD in the proximal colon and the predictive factors for cases in which SBO is useful. Methods: A total of 88 tumors located in the proximal colon resected by balloon-assisted ESD (BA-ESD) using SBO and 461 tumors resected by conventional ESD (C-ESD) between June 2015 and November 2020 were considered. Seventy-eight tumors each in the BA-ESD and C-ESD groups were matched by propensity score matching. ESD outcomes were compared between the groups, and a decision tree analysis was performed to explore the predictive factors for cases in which SBO is useful. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in the major outcomes such as en bloc resection rate (95% vs. 99%, p = 0.17), R0 resection rate (92% vs. 96%, p = 0.30), mean dissection speed (16 mm2/min vs. 16 mm2/min, p = 0.53), and intraoperative perforation rate (5% vs. 6%, p = 0.73). Even when considering cases with poor preoperative scope operability, there were no significant differences between the groups. Comparison of tumors ≥40 mm in diameter between the groups confirmed that the intraoperative perforation rate was significantly lower in the BA-ESD group than in the C-ESD group (0% vs. 24%, p = 0.0188). Conclusion: SBO is useful for ESD of tumors ≥40 mm in diameter in the proximal colon to prevent intraoperative perforation, which usually has a long procedure time.

We report a rare case of neuroendocrine tumor of the ampulla of Vater in a 53-year-old Japanese male. The patient was admitted to our institution for workup of presyncope secondary to anemia. Medical history was pertinent for coronary artery disease, for which he had drug eluting stents (DES) placed and was on aspirin and clopidogrel therapy. Upper endoscopic evaluation revealed bleeding from an erosion at the ampulla of Vater. Endoscopic therapy with epinephrine and thrombin injection allowed for successful hemostasis and repeat endoscopy 6 months later did not show any changes in lesion character. Repeat endoscopy at 1 year, however, revealed erythema and further erosion on the ampulla of Vater as the lesion had progressed. The patient was diagnosed with carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. Abdominal computed tomography showed a 9-mm hypervascular tumor at the ampulla of Vater and the patient underwent open pancreatoduodenectomy and lymphadenectomy. Histologically, the tumor consisted of small-sized round cell proliferations with a solid nest pattern. Immunostaining results indicated that the tumor cells were positive for synaptophysin and 2.5% were positive for Ki-67. The final diagnosis was sporadic non-functional neuroendocrine tumor (NET) G1 of the ampulla of Vater. This case demonstrates that NET of the ampulla of Vater, while rare, can have significant changes and growth over time and highlights the importance of follow-up endoscopic evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Vertical tumor margin-negative T1 colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is an absolute curative condition following complete endoscopic resection (ER). However, the influence on prognosis in relation to vertical tumor margin is unclear. Therefore, we evaluated the influence of the distance from vertical tumor margin to resected specimen edge (vertical margin distance) of ER for T1b (submucosal invasion depth > 1000 µm) CRC on the prognosis of patients undergoing additional surgery after ER. METHODS: In total, 215 consecutive patients with T1b CRC who underwent additional surgery after ER at Hiroshima University Hospital between February 1992 and June 2019 were enrolled. We assessed 191 patients without lymph node metastases at the additional surgery. The specimens resected by ER were classified into three groups based on the vertical margin distance: patients with a vertical margin distance of ≥ 500 µm (Group A); patients with a vertical margin distance of < 500 µm (Group B); and patients with a positive vertical tumor margin (Group C). Subsequently, we evaluated the prognosis of the patients in relation to the clinicopathological characteristics among the three groups. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in clinicopathological characteristics among the three groups. Group A had a significantly higher recurrence-free 5-year survival rate than Groups B and C (100%, 84.5%, and 81.8%, respectively). Similarly, Group A had a significantly higher disease-specific 5-year survival rate than Group C (100% vs. 95.5%). CONCLUSIONS: Complete en bloc resection with sufficient submucosal layer from the invasive front (vertical margin distance > 500 µm) by ER for T1 CRC reduces the risk of metastatic recurrence after additional surgery.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hybrid endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a colorectal lesion resection procedure that includes both planned and salvage procedures. Previous colorectal hybrid ESD studies have involved single institutions or few operators over a short timeframe, and the size for indication has not been established. In this multicentre study, we investigated the clinical outcomes of hybrid ESD for colorectal tumors that met the 30 mm lesion size criterion. METHODS: From January 2008 to December 2018, colorectal hybrid ESD was performed for 172 lesions (diameter range, ≥ 20- < 30 mm) at Hiroshima GI Endoscopy Research Group. We compared clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes between 56 and 116 lesions in planned and salvage groups, respectively. We also compared data between 2008 and 2013 (the first period) and 2014 and 2018 (the second period) to assess operator experience. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in the complete en bloc resection rate between the planned and salvage groups (92.9% vs. 83.6%, respectively). Procedure time was shorter in the planned group (44.5 min) than in the salvage group (72.0 min, p < 0.01). The perforation rate was higher in the salvage group (21.6%) than in the planned group (0%, p < 0.01); however, the perforation rate during snaring in the salvage group was 1.8%. During the second period relative to the first period, we recorded a significantly higher complete en bloc resection rate (95.7% vs. 75.6%, respectively, p < 0.01) and experienced operator rate (75.5% vs. 53.9%, respectively, p < 0.01). Furthermore, no significant difference was found in the complete en bloc resection rate between the planned and salvage groups during the second period (100% vs. 94.4%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Colorectal hybrid ESD, especially salvage hybrid ESD performed by experienced operators, is adoptable and safe for lesions with diameters ranging from ≥ 20 to < 30 mm.

Pancreatic colloid carcinoma, also known as mucinous non-cystic carcinoma, is a rare subtype of pancreatic cancer accounting for 1-3% of the pancreatic malignant neoplasms. We herein report a woman who initially presented for acute pancreatitis. Computed tomography showed pancreatic swelling due to acute pancreatitis and a 16-mm mass with an enhanced margin in the pancreatic tail. We performed endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle aspiration. The patient was diagnosed with pancreatic colloid carcinoma, and distal pancreatectomy was performed. This case indicates that pancreatic colloid carcinoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis of pancreatic tumor presenting with acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Diagnostic support using artificial intelligence may contribute to the equalization of endoscopic diagnosis of colorectal lesions. We developed computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) support system for diagnosing colorectal lesions using the NBI International Colorectal Endoscopic (NICE) classification and the Japan NBI Expert Team (JNET) classification. METHODS: Using Residual Network as the classifier and NBI images as training images, we developed a CADx based on the NICE classification (CADx-N) and a CADx based on the JNET classification (CADx-J). For validation, 480 non-magnifying and magnifying NBI images were used for the CADx-N and 320 magnifying NBI images were used for the CADx-J. The diagnostic performance of the CADx-N was evaluated using the magnification rate. RESULTS: The accuracy of the CADx-N for Types 1, 2, and 3 was 97.5%, 91.2%, and 93.8%, respectively. The diagnostic performance for each magnification level was good (no statistically significant difference). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of the CADx-J were 100%, 96.3%, 82.8%, 100%, and 96.9% for Type 1; 80.3%, 93.7%, 94.1%, 79.2%, and 86.3% for Type 2A; 80.4%, 84.7%, 46.8%, 96.3%, and 84.1% for Type 2B; and 62.5%, 99.6%, 96.8%, 93.8%, and 94.1% for Type 3, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The multi-class CADx systems had good diagnostic performance with both the NICE and JNET classifications and may aid in educating non-expert endoscopists and assist in diagnosing colorectal lesions.

Techniques for 3D endoscopic systems have been widely studied for various reasons. Among them, active stereo based systems, in which structured-light patterns are projected to surfaces and endoscopic images of the pattern are analyzed to produce 3D depth images, are promising, because of robustness and simple system configurations. For those systems, finding correspondences between a projected pattern and an original pattern is an open problem. Recently, correspondence estimation by graph neural networks (GCN) using graph-based representation of the patterns were proposed for 3D endoscopic systems. One severe problem of the approach is that the graph matching by GCN is largely affected by the stability of the graph construction process using the detected patterns of a captured image. If the detected pattern is fragmented into small pieces, graph matching may fail and 3D shapes cannot be retrieved. In this paper, we propose a solution for those problems by applying deep-layered GCN and extended graph representations of the patterns, where proximity information is added. Experiments show that the proposed method outperformed the previous method in accuracies for correspondence matching for 3D reconstruction.

The Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES) guidelines recommend continued warfarin treatment during gastroenterological endoscopic procedures with a high risk of bleeding as an alternative to heparin replacement in patients on warfarin therapy. However, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of warfarin in colorectal endoscopic resection (ER). The present study is aimed at verifying the risk of bleeding after ER for colorectal neoplasia (CRN) in patients with continued warfarin use. This was a single-center retrospective cohort study using clinical records. We assessed 126 consecutive patients with 159 CRNs who underwent ER (endoscopic mucosal resection, 146 cases; endoscopic submucosal dissection, 13 cases) at Hiroshima University Hospital between January 2014 and December 2019. Patients were divided into two groups: the heparin replacement group (79 patients with 79 CRNs) and the continued warfarin group (47 patients with 80 CRNs). One-to-one propensity score matching was performed to compare the bleeding rate after ER between the groups. The rate of bleeding after ER was significantly higher in the heparin replacement group than in the continued warfarin group for both before (10.1% vs. 1.3%, respectively; P = 0.0178) and after (11.9% vs. 0%, respectively; P = 0.0211) propensity score matching. None of the patients experienced thromboembolic events during the perioperative period. The risk of bleeding after colorectal ER was significantly lower in patients with continued warfarin use than in those with heparin replacement. Our data supports the recommendations of the latest JGES guidelines for patients receiving warfarin therapy.

Small drones with chemical or biosensor devices that can detect airborne odorant molecules have attracted considerable attention owing to their applicability in environmental and security monitoring and search-and-rescue operations. Small drones with commercial metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOX) gas sensors have been developed for odor source localization; however, their real-time-odor-detection performance has proven inadequate. However, biosensing technologies based on insect olfactory systems exhibit relatively high sensitivity, selectivity, and real-time response with respect to odorant molecules compared to commercial MOX gas sensors. In such devices, excised insect antennae function as portable odorant biosensor elements and have been found to deliver excellent sensing performance. This study presents experimental protocols for odorant-molecule detection in the air using a small autonomous bio-hybrid drone based on a mountable electroantennography (EAG) device incorporating silkmoth antennae. We developed a mountable EAG device including sensing/processing parts with a Wi-Fi module. The device was equipped with a simple sensor enclosure to enhance the sensor directivity. Thus, odor source localization was conducted using the spiral-surge algorithm, which does not assume an upwind direction. The experimental bio-hybrid odor-detecting drone identified real-time odorant-concentration differences in a pseudo-open environment (outside a wind tunnel) and localized the source. The developed drone and associated system can serve as an efficient odorant molecule-detection tool and a suitable flight platform for developing odor source localization algorithms owing to its high programmability.
