This study aimed to test whether bright light (BL) exposure attenuates the reduction in blood pressure (BP) postexercise compared to dim light (DL). Twenty healthy men (27 ± 5 years) randomly underwent two experimental sessions: one under BL (5000 lux) and another under dim light (DL <8lux). In each session, subjects executed a bout of aerobic exercise (cycle ergometer, 30 min, moderate intensity). BP (oscillometric) and heart rate (HR monitor) were measured, and rate-pressure-product (RPP) was calculated. Additionally, a 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was conducted after the sessions. Systolic BP decreased while HR increased significantly and similarly after the exercise in both sessions. Additionally, systolic BP levels were higher in BL than DL throughout the experimental session (Psession = 0.04). Diastolic (Pinteraction = 0.02) and mean (Pinteraction = 0.03) BPs decreased after exercise in DL (at 30 min), and increased in BL (at 60 and 90 min). RPP increased in both sessions postexercise, but with a main effect revealing higher levels throughout the experimental session in BL than DL (Psession = 0.04) and during the first 3 h of ABPM (p = 0.05). In healthy men, BL exposure increased systolic BP and cardiac work, and abolished the postexercise decreases of diastolic and mean BPs.

The present work aims to study the production of a new extracellular lipase from the endophytic fungus Preussia africana isolated from red lapacho tree (Handroanthus impetiginosus). Tests were carried out in order to evaluate the influence of different inducing oils (sunflower, cotton, corn, palm kernel, canola and linseed) and carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N of 11.73, 8.63 and 7.05) on submerged fermentation aiming at optimal production of a single extracellular lipase. Results show that an optimal lipase production of 14.5 kDa has been attained after 48 h of fermentation when sunflower oil was used in the C/N ratio of 8.63 in the fermentation medium. The produced lipase showed greater activity for oils that had higher percentage of unsaturated fatty acids in their composition. Characterization was performed using a two-factor central composite rotatable design (CCRD), and the pH 6 was found to be optimal (around 28 U/mL). The temperature range studied (from 20 to 54 °C) showed no difference for the lipase catalytic activity. This is an advantage, especially when aiming at its application in reactions of industrial interest.

Social distancing (SDIST) to contain COVID-19 pandemic spread implies reduced sunlight exposure and social daily life, which delay the circadian system and increase eveningness preference. The regular practice of physical activity (PA) is a time cue that decreased during SDIST. However, it is unknown if decreased PA may be associated with increase of eveningness preference. This study aimed to investigate if PA changes might be associated with changes in the morningness-eveningness preference of individuals practicing SDIST in Brazil. For this, 322 adults (18-89 years-old) regularly living in Brazil between March and October 2020 answered an online survey including questions considering the before and during SDIST period on PA (min/week) and morningness-eveningness questionnaire score. Sociodemographic, SDIST, anthropometric, and health characteristics were also included in the online survey. Participants self-reported an increase of eveningness preference comparing Before-SDIST with During-SDIST scores (56 ± 12 vs. 52 ± 13, p < .0001). Self-reported PA decreased comparing Before-SDIST with During-SDIST (230 ± 170 vs. 149 ± 155 min/week, p < .0001). Decrease in the total volume of PA and hours spent outside per day, and higher body mass index were associated with the increase in eveningness preference (R2 = .077), although the decrease in the total volume of PA was the strongest association (R2 = .037). In summary, our results show that SDIST may cause a delay in the circadian system, which is associated with the decrease of PA, a reduction in the hours spent outside per day with sunlight exposure, and obesity.

This study aimed to optimize free fatty acid production by enzymatic hydrolysis of cottonseed, olive and palm kernel oils in stirred-tank reactors using a lipase from Geotrichum candidum (GCL-I). The effect of pH, temperature and substrate concentration on the hydrolytic activity of GCL-I using these vegetable oils was investigated. Thermal stability tests and thermodynamic studies were also performed. A complete hydrolysis of cottonseed oil was obtained after 120 min of reaction, while for olive and palm kernel maximum hydrolysis percentage was 96.4% and 60.1%, respectively. GCL-I exhibited the highest activity in the hydrolysis of vegetable oils that are rich in unsaturated-fatty acids (cottonseed and olive oils). Under optimal conditions (46.8% m/m of oil, 6.6 U/g of the reaction mixture at 40 °C), complete cottonseed oil hydrolysis was observed at 60 min of reaction performed in an emulsifier-free system with no buffer.
