RESUMO

It has been suggested that geomagnetic storms could be perceived by organisms via disruption of naturally occurring diurnal geomagnetic variation. This variation, in turn, is viewed by way of a zeitgeber for biological circadian rhythms. The biological effects of a geomagnetic storm, therefore, could depend on the local time of day when its main phase occurs. We have assessed calpain activity in tissues of roach (Rutilus rutilus) and great pond snail (Limnaea stagnalis) after exposure to a simulated geomagnetic storm, reproduced at different times of day, in order to evaluate this hypothesis. Significant decrease in calpain activity was observed in organisms exposed to the simulated geomagnetic storm whose main phase, and initial period of a recovery phase, did not coincide with the expected peak of diurnal geomagnetic variation. The results obtained are considered an experimental confirmation of the aforementioned hypothesis. Improvement of a correlative approach for the assessment of biological effects of geomagnetic activity can be achieved by considering information on the synchronization of geomagnetic storm's main phase with diurnal geomagnetic variation.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Arbidol (umifenovir) in adult patients with influenza. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The analysis of the preliminary results of the multicenter double-blind randomized placebo-controlled post-marketing study ARBITR was performed. A total of 293 adults aged 18 to 65 years with influenza or acute respiratory tract infection of no more than 36 hours' duration were enrolled in the study. Individuals were randomized into 2 treatment groups: oral umifenovir 200 mg four times daily for 5 days or placebo four times daily for 5 days. The efficacy endpoints were time to resolution of all symptoms, severity of symptoms and illness, durations of virus shedding. RESULTS: The efficacy of umifenovir was evaluated in the group of 119 (40.6%) patients with influenza: 45 patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza and 74 patients whom diagnosis of influenza was made based on clinical and epidemiological data. Umifenovir had influence on the time to resolution of all symptoms. All symptoms were resolved within the first 60 hours after therapy initiation in 23.8% patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza in the umifenovir group and it was 5.7 times greater compared to placebo group (4.2%) (p < 0.05). Severity of illness, catarrhal symptoms and intoxication was reduced with umifenovir compared to placebo, reducing of severity was most evidently observed within the first 2-3 days following the therapy initiation. Umifenovir had a significant effect on viral shedding. The proportion of patients still shedding influenza virus on day 4 was significantly reduced in the umifenovir group compared to placebo (25 vs 53%, respectively; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: It was found that the effect of umifenovir in the treatment of influenza in adults is most pronounced in the acute stage of the disease and appears in the reduction of time to resolution of all symptoms of the disease, reducing the severity of symptoms of the disease and durations of virus shedding.

RESUMO

Pneumonia often occurs as a secondary infection after influenza and accounts for a large proportion of the morbidity and mortality associated with seasonal and pandemic influenza outbreaks. The efficacy of umifenovir (Arbidol) was investigated on a murine model of S. aureus pneumonia following A/California/04/2009 (H1N1) influenza virusinfection. Oral treatment with umifenovir (40 and 60 mg/kg/day) in all the contamination schemes increased the survival rate in the mice from 0% to 90% and lowered the animal weight loss. The umifenovir treatment also decreased the virus titer by ≥ 2 logs and the viable bacteria counts in the lungs of the mice. The lungs of the mice treated with umifenovir had less severe histopathologic lesions compared to the control group.

RESUMO

The effect of a model of the H-component of a typical magnetic storm on the early ontogenesis of Daphnia magna Straus at 21 and 23 degrees C has been studied. It was shown based on the rates of the early ontogenesis that the effects of the model magnetic storm from the sudden onset of the storm to its end differ from the effects of the model magnetic storm from the recovery phase to the end of the storm. The effects of the model magnetic storm depended on temperature. The action of the model magnetic storm from the sudden onset of the storm to its end led to changes in the body length in the first progeny broods.

RESUMO

We conducted comparative analysis of clinico-economical efficacy of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors as components of combination therapy of patients with arterial hypertension and ischemic heart disease. Clinical efficacy of fosinopril, moexipril, perindopril, and ramipril was comparable: in compared groups statistically significant lowering of arterial pressure was achieved by day 6 of treatment and this lowering persisted up to day 36 of therapy with ramipril. All studied drugs were well tolerated. Ramipril was notable for highest economical efficacy determined by the method of \"minimization of expenditures\". Technology of assessment of clinico-economical effectiveness of preparations from the same pharmacological group can be used in compilation of standards of drug therapy of various diseases, basing on which a physician administers a concrete drug to a concrete patient.

RESUMO

The authors analyze and present the results of spectroscopic studies into changes in the accumulation of the photosensitizer Photosens, its elimination kinetics and distribution in the tissues of the eye and eyelids, as well as in the tumors that have developed at these sites. The findings allowed the authors to estimate the duration of the agent's persistence in the eye tissues and the time interval associated with the high risk for phototoxic eyelid skin and conjunctival reactions and to determine a possibility of and conditions for photodynamic therapy, as well as the length of hospital stay when the latter was performed.

RESUMO

Histological and histochemical methods were used to study the ovaries of Greenland seal (Pagophoca groenlandica) from birth-time up to 30 years of age and mature females of Phoca vitulina and Erignathus barbatus. The ovary of the new-born Greenland seal has fetal medullary substance which is a provisory endocrinous gland producing not only sex hormones but also corticosteron. In other species of seals the intestinal cells of the medullary substance are the equivalent of this gland. Within 3-4 weeks after birth the reduction of the fetal medullary substance is completed, it is substituted by the connective tissue and the ovary acquires its typical structure. The rest of the fetal medullary substance is in the depth of the cortex and near the infundibulum of the ovary as lipofuscincontaining cells. When the maturation period approaches, the process of the follicle atresia regularly changes: the epithelium dies quicker, and the multiplication of intestinal cells increases. The ovaries of seals are rich in interstitial cells. Their amount cyclically changes. The cells producing steroid hormones always well hydrolize AS naphthyl-phosphates, the reaction with glycerophosphate is more variable. The connective tissue is poor in acid mucopolysaccharides, its amorphous substance in the ovary cortex is rich in protein. Senile changes of the ovary are noticed in the seal beginning from 20 years of age.

RESUMO

The results of detection of phosphatases with different substrates in the cells forming steroid hormones in ovaries, testes and adrenals of newborn seals, ovaries of adult seals and adrenals of adult rabbits, dogs and man were compared. The first group of substrates includes sodium glycerophosphate, glucose-1-phosphate, nitrophenylphosphate (Gomori's sulfide method). The second group includes naphthol phosphates AS-BI, AS-MX and AS-BS, whose hydrolysis is determined by simultaneous and successive azocoupling with diazotized benzidine and stable diazotates by fast blue and fast cherry-coloured. Detection of phosphomonesterases in the cells forming steroid hormones with these two groups of substrates gives absolutely different results which are presented in the table. These results are thought to be associated with presence of the isoenzyme, intensively splitting azotholphosphates, but inhibited by the diazonium salt. This isoenzyme is found mainly in the cells producing steroid hormones.
