RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report the prevalence of postoperative retinal tear or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment secondary to intravitreal injections. METHODS: Surgical and medical records of patients who received intravitreal injections at the practice of a single retina specialist from January 2004 to May 2013 and who were followed for at least 6 months were investigated retrospectively. RESULTS: During the study period, a total of 3,907 intravitreal injections were performed in 1,049 eyes of 784 patients (416 males [47%]). The mean number of injections per eye was 3.72 ± 3.43 (range, 1-22). The mean age of the participants was 67.03 ± 13.56 (range, 5-94 years). The mean follow-up time was 31.98 ± 22.86 months (range, 6-144 months). Retinal break or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment occurred in 3 injections of 3 eyes, yielding an overall prevalence of 0.077% per injection and 0.29% per eye. CONCLUSIONS: Retinal tear and rhegmatogenous detachment are rare complications of intravitreal injection. Precautions should be taken especially in patients having predisposing conditions, such as high myopia, or any other vitreoretinal disorders.

RESUMO

Vasoproliferative tumours may be primary or secondary and present with severe exudation leading to marked visual loss. We describe a 47-year-old man with unilateral secondary vasoproliferative tumour associated with sector retinitis pigmentosa and Usher I syndrome who was successfully treated with a single session of photodynamic treatment. Standard treatment protocol was used except that the treatment duration was doubled. A year after the treatment, the angioma-like tumour vanished and exudation was dramatically reduced. Photodynamic therapy seems to be a minimally invasive and safe technique in eyes with secondary vasoproliferative tumours.

RESUMO

We present imaging findings in a case of posterior scleritis, which may mimic tumoral mass lesion resulting in unnecessary enucleation. Magnetic resonance imaging was remarkable for a subretinal mass hypointense on T2 and hyperintense on T1 weighted images. A peripheral rim of hypointensity was noteworthy, suggestive of sclerouveal thickening. There was an ill-defined area of increased T2 signal intensity adjacent to globe at the site of nodular lesion implying an inflammatory process. A linear contrast enhancement was seen within the bulbus oculi which may represent detached retina by exudation or displaced retina due to thickened sclera and choroidal layers. The CSF space around the optic nerve was enlarged.

RESUMO

The authors report a rare consequence of an anteriorly migrated encircling silicone band. The extruded encircling band, which "cheesewired" forward through the superior and medical rectus insertions straddled the cornea firmly and formed a corneal groove. Corneal groove is an extremely rare complication of scleral buckling surgery.

RESUMO

We performed a prospective study in order to elucidate the predisposing role of axial length and hyperopia in retinal vein occlusions. The study group comprised 39 patients with unilateral central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), 50 patients with unilateral branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), 13 patients with unilateral hemispheric retinal vein occlusion (HRVO) and 45 control eyes. The axial length of affected eyes was compared to fellow eyes and control eyes in each subgroup of patients with retinal vein occlusion. No statistical difference was noted for any of the subgroups (p > 0.05). Hyperopia was detected in 12 of 39 eyes (31%) with CRVO, 14 of 50 eyes (28%) with BRVO, 4 of 13 eyes (31%) with HRVO and 15 of 45 eyes (33%) in the control group. No statistically significant difference was discovered (p > 0.05). In the light of our study, we believe that axial length and hyperopia may not be risk factors in retinal vein occlusions, in contrast to common belief.
