RESUMO

Numerous utilities encounter issues with taste and odor that alter the public's impression of the safety of drinking water. The creation of certain components in water naturally due to global climate change is another source of taste and odor components, in addition to industrial emissions. Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), both of which are generated by blue-green algae and actinomycetes, are two substances that contribute to the musty and earthy smells in drinking water sources. Unfortunately, current conventional treatment plants only partially remove 2-MIB and geosmin. Therefore, to protect the environment and public health, more up-to-date or optimized treatment methods should be applied to outdated treatment facilities. Best treatment practices, evaluation standards, and decision-making approaches, however, are still shrouded in mystery. The goal of this study was to identify the most effective treatment options for 2-MIB and geosmin. By using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), a total of 22 assessment criteria were found and prioritized. A thorough literature search led to the identification of potential treatment options, and their effectiveness was evaluated. These options and priority rankings were decided upon using AHP in the decision-making process. Advanced oxidation techniques came out on top in the final priority ranking, followed by membrane filtering, adsorption, oxidation, hybrid processes, and traditional treatment methods. The applied analytical decision techniques may also be used to choose the optimal treatment options, even though the results are particular to 2-MIB and geosmin.

RESUMO

Breast cancer is a rare entity in men, accounting for less than 1% of all breast cancers. Contralateral breast cancer diagnosed within 12 months of the prior breast cancer is known as bilateral synchronous breast cancer. Bilateral, synchronous male breast cancer is extremely rare and consequently there are few publications describing imaging findings of synchronous bilateral male breast cancer. We aim to raise awareness about this rare entity by presenting the clinical and pathologic findings of a 64-year-old male case with synchronous bilateral breast cancer using multimodality imaging techniques including magnetic resonance imaging. Increasing awareness of the disease will prevent delays in diagnosis and treatment.

RESUMO

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has various radiological imaging findings. Although paediatric cases are generally asymptomatic, they may be affected by the disease. Here, we aimed to discuss a case with atypical imaging findings.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Trochanteric entry nailing potentially causes damage to the gluteus medius (GM) tendon. The aim of this study is to determine the amount of iatrogenic damage to the tendon during reaming by measuring the thickness and stiffness of the GM muscle in patients with trochanteric fractures who are treated with trochanteric entry nails using gray-scale ultrasound (GSUS) and shear-wave elastography (SWE). METHODS: Thickness and stiffness values of bilateral GM muscles in 40 patients with trochanteric fractures treated with PFN-A were measured using GSUS and SWE at post-operative sixth week or later. Harris Hip Scores and bilateral active hip abduction measurements of the patients were recorded. The data was analyzed using statistical methods to assess the extent and amount of iatrogenic injury that occurred during trochanteric entry. RESULTS: Mean age of the patients was 70. Thirty-three fractures occurred with low-energy trauma. In the SWE evaluation, there was no statistically significant difference between ipsi- and contralateral GM muscle thickness measurements or ipsi- and contralateral GM muscle stiffness measurements. Also, the difference between the clinical evaluation results of the ipsi- and contralateral hip functions was not statistically significant. DISCUSSION: In this study, we used the Harris Hip Score and hip abduction range of motion in addition to SWE and GSUS in order to assess the patients' functional status. There are studies in the literature that report significant injury to the GM tendon with cephalomedullary nailing. The majority of these studies are cadaver studies with only clinically irrelevant or uncertain evidence. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential negative effects of the iatrogenic damage to the bone-tendon junction during nailing, by measuring the stiffness (consistency) and atrophy of the GM muscle alongside the functional evaluation. CONCLUSION: We have found no statistically significant difference between operated and intact side GM muscles in terms of stiffness, atrophy, and functional evaluation in patients with TFs treated using PFN-A. The results of our study should not be interpreted as trochanteric entry nailing does not cause any damage on the GM tendon.

RESUMO

Leiomyoma is a mesenchymal tumor which arise from any structure or organ containing smooth muscle, but is frequently seen in the female genital tract. Renal leiomyoma is extremely rare benign lesion with low incidence (1:1000), has been reported mostly in adults and very few cases have been described in the pediatric age-group. It is often asymptomatic and can be diagnosed when reaches large sizes. Hereby, we present a case of renal leiomyoma in a smaller size, in the pediatric age group.

RESUMO

In this paper, oxidative leaching and electrowinnig processes were performed to recovery of mercury from spent tubular fluorescent lamps. Hypochlorite was found to be effectively used for the leaching of mercury to the solution. Mercury could be leached with an efficiency of 96% using 0.5M/0.2M NaOCl/NaCl reagents at 50°C and pH 7.5 for 2-h. Electrowinning process was conducted on the filtered leaching solutions and over the 81% of mercury was recovered at the graphite electrode using citric acid as a reducing agent. The optimal process conditions were observed as a 6A current intensity, 30g/L of reducing agent concentration, 120min. electrolysis time and pH of 7 at the room temperature. It was found that current intensity and citric acid amount had positive effect for mercury reduction. Recovery of mercury in its elemental form was confirmed by SEM/EDX. Oxidative leaching with NaOCl/NaCl reagent was followed by electrowinning process can be effectively used for the recovery of mercury from spent fluorescent lamps.
