RESUMO

The Martian environment, characterized by extreme aridity, frigid temperatures, and a lack of atmospheric oxygen, presents a formidable challenge for potential terraforming endeavors. This review article synthesizes current research on utilizing algae as biocatalysts in the proposed terraforming of Mars, assessing their capacity to facilitate Martian atmospheric conditions through photosynthetic bioengineering. We analyze the physiological and genetic traits of extremophile algae that equip them for survival in extreme habitats on Earth, which serve as analogs for Martian surface conditions. The potential for these organisms to mediate atmospheric change on Mars is evaluated, specifically their role in biogenic oxygen production and carbon dioxide sequestration. We discuss strategies for enhancing algal strains' resilience and metabolic efficiency, including genetic modification and the development of bioreactors for controlled growth in extraterrestrial environments. The integration of algal systems with existing mechanical and chemical terraforming proposals is also examined, proposing a synergistic approach for establishing a nascent Martian biosphere. Ethical and ecological considerations concerning introducing terrestrial life to extra-planetary bodies are critically appraised. This appraisal includes an examination of potential ecological feedback loops and inherent risks associated with biological terraforming. Biological terraforming is the theoretical process of deliberately altering a planet's atmosphere, temperature, and ecosystem to render it suitable for Earth-like life. The feasibility of a phased introduction of life, starting with microbial taxa and progressing to multicellular organisms, fosters a supportive atmosphere on Mars. By extending the frontier of biotechnological innovation into space, this work contributes to the foundational understanding necessary for one of humanity's most audacious goals-the terraforming of another planet.

Introduction We aim to compare retrobulbar blood flow parameters between the amblyopic eye and the fellow eye in patients with anisometropic amblyopia. Methods Peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end-diastolic velocity (EDV) of the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), and posterior ciliary artery (PCA) were measured by color Doppler imaging (CDI), and the resistivity index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were calculated in 62 patients aged 12-40 years with anisometropic amblyopia. Results The mean PSV values of OA, CRA, and PCA in amblyopic and fellow eyes were 30.38 ± 10.34, 8.45 ± 2.27, and 8.03 ± 2.77, and 33.73 ± 14.46, 8.35 ± 2.05, and 8.81 ± 2.77, respectively. The mean EDV values of OA, CRA, and PCA in amblyopic and fellow eyes were 6.86 ± 2.64, 1.47 ± 1.59, and 1.94 ± 2.03, and 8.57 ± 4.30, 1.80 ± 1.73, and 2.32 ± 1.20, respectively. The mean RI values of OA, CRA, and PCA in amblyopic and fellow eyes were 0.77 ± 0.10, 0.85 ± 0.14, and 0.78 ± 0.15, and 0.75 ± 0.07, 0.79 ± 0.20, and 0.74 ± 0.13, respectively. OA-PSV and OA-EDV values were significantly lower in the amblyopic eye than in the healthy eye (p < 0.05). OA-RI values were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the amblyopic eye than in the healthy eye. Conclusions Considering the decrease in PSV and EDV and the increase in RI, which are the blood flow parameters of the amblyopic eye, our study may provide guidance to focus on increasing blood flow in the treatment of amblyopia.

PURPOSE: Bone metastasis is essential in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) as it determines prognosis and survival. Hybrid PET/MRI allows simultaneous acquisition of PET and MRI data, thus combining the strength of both technologies allows the detection of bone marrow metastases that are missed by PET/CT. In this retrospective study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of hybrid PET/MRI with Ga-68 prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) in detecting skeletal metastases in newly diagnosed PCa patients and compared the effectiveness of stand-alone PSMA PET reviewing versus stand-alone whole-body (WB) MRI evaluation. We also investigated the effect of the interpretation of all PET/MR data together on clinical management. METHODS: We studied 74 newly diagnosed PCa patients who underwent PSMA PET/MRI for staging purposes. At first, PET and MRI were evaluated separately for bone lesions on a patient-and-lesion basis and then a further joint PSMA PET/MRI interpretation was made. RESULTS: Patient-based sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy analysis for bone metastasis was, respectively, 1.0, 0.83, 0.54, 1.0, 0.86 for PET; 0.75, 0.96, 0.81, 0.95, 0.93 for WB MRI and 0.91, 0.95, 0.78, 0,98, 0.94 for PET/MRI. The combined PET/MRI evaluation changed the clinical impact in 13.5% of patients (eight correct and two wrong decisions) compared to PET stand-alone interpretation. CONCLUSION: PSMA PET imaging showed superior sensitivity to WB MRI in detecting bone metastases in newly diagnosed PCa patients, whereas WB MRI has superior specificity and PPV. Furthermore, the specificity and PPV of joint PET/MRI evaluation are better than PSMA PET alone. Despite the longer acquisition period, adding WB MRI sequences to PSMA PET imaging appears beneficial for PCa patient management.

The aim of our study is to compare 2 prostate fusion biopsy models in terms of accurate target sampling. One hundred patients who had Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System score 3, 4, or 5 lesions (lesion diameter, >5 mm in long axis) in multiparametric-magnetic resonance imaging and prostate-specific antigen levels between 3 and 10 ng/mL were enrolled in the study. All patients were biopsy naive. Two groups were composed with 50 patients each. Group 1 patients had cognitive fusion (CF) biopsy, and group 2 had magnetic resonance-ultrasound fusion platform biopsy. After fusion biopsy, standard biopsy was also performed. Outcomes of histopathologic and demographic data were evaluated statistically. There were no statistical differences between the 2 groups in terms of age, prostate-specific antigen levels, prostate volume, and lesion length (P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in sampling targeted lesions (P > 0.05). Also, no difference was found between the 2 groups in terms of random biopsy cancer detection rates (P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between CF and magnetic resonance-ultrasound fusion in terms of cancer detection rates. For the experienced operators, we recommend lesions that are longer than 5 mm can be sampled using CF, an inexpensive and faster technique.

RESUMO

Carotid artery kinking is a frequent finding in duplex ultrasonography. However, isolated morphological changes without significant carotid stenosis are rarely symptomatic. Neck pain is a rare symptom in patients with carotid artery kinks. The vascular etiology in patients with persistent neck pain is usually overlooked. A 58-year-old female patient with chronic neck pain presented to our clinic. Following multidisciplinary team review, the symptoms were found due to the kinking of the internal carotid artery. In this report, we present the clinical presentation of the patient with the kinking of the internal carotid artery without stenosis, surgical management of the pathology, and a brief literature review.

RESUMO

Myofibroblastoma (MFB) of the breast is an uncommon benign stromal tumor. Herein, we present histopathologically proven MFB that hyperechoic well-defined breast mass in the ultrasonography and circumscribed high-density mass in mammography. Additionally, internal septations and hyperintense appearance on magnetic resonance imaging are very valuable findings in the differential diagnosis of MFB.
