[Cryosurgery of anorectal cancer and the freezing-induced changes]. / Kryochirurgie des anorektalen Krebses und die refrigerationsbedingten Veränderungen.

Inoperable ano-rectal cancers were treated with cryo-surgery supplemented in suitable cases with brachy-radiotherapy. An account is given of the authors' clinical experience and of the morphological changes caused by cryotherapy at -130 degrees to -140 degrees C. In some cases treatment resulted in epithelisation of the tumourous ulcer and in a more than two-year survival of patients in the 70 to 80 age group. The macroscopic picture was characterized by stasis oedema, followed by the necrosis of the tumour, while the light and electron microscopic pictures showed lesions of the cell membrane system -- particularly of the mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum and of the Golgi's apparatus -- which was more marked in the tumour cells than in the cells of the surrounding intact mucous membrane. The destruction of the tumour cells is brought into relation with this finding. Laminarly growing, not deeply infiltrated tumours whose cranial edge can be reached with the finger seem to be suited to cryo-surgery.

Some urgent problems in the treatment of operable breast cancer.

The results of 1216 radical mastectomies and 297 conservative surgical interventions performed on 1513 operable mammary carcinoma patients between 1950 and 1962 are analysed on the basis of the 10 years survival rate. It appears that early diagnosis and early operation will give the best result. The bioloical activity of the tumour is the most decisive additional factor.

[Operability and prognosis of rectosigmoid cancer]. / Angaben zur Operabilität und Prognose der rektosigmoidalen Krebse.

The data of 571 rectosigmoidal cancer patients treated between 1959 and 1972 analysed to establish the factors hindering operability. The most important factor was a belated diagnosis. Suggestions are made for early diagnosis to improve the rate of early operations and thereby the prognosis.

Light and electron microscopic changes of intestinal wall sections obtained at enterostomy in patients with intestinal paralysis are reported. The observed structural changes offered certain information on the relationship between the pathophysiological and the morphological changes in intestinal obstruction.
