Selection of mosquito collection methods is of crucial importance to evaluate the impact of vector control tools on entomological outcomes. During a cluster randomised control trial evaluating the relative efficacy of two dual-active ingredient (a.i.) long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) compared to pyrethroid-only LLINs, we assessed the performance of different mosquito collection methods: Human landing catches (HLC), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light traps, and pyrethrum spray catches (PSC). Anopheles mosquitoes were collected using three collection methods in 4 houses, in each of the 60 trial clusters at baseline and every quarter for 24 months using PSCs and HLCs, while CDC light traps were performed during two quarters only. Mean density of vectors collected per method per night was the highest with HLCs (15.9), followed by CDC light traps (6.8); with PSCs (1.1) collecting 10 times less mosquitoes than HLCs. All three collection methods collected fewer mosquitoes in the Interceptor G2® dual a.i. arm, compared to the other trial arms, although only HLCs and PSCs demonstrated strong evidence of this due to a greater number of collection rounds undertaken, than CDC light traps. The broadly similar results regarding the differential impact of the two dual a.i. LLINs showed by the three collection methods suggest that the more ethically acceptable, cheaper, and logistically simpler methods such as CDC light traps could be prioritised for use in large community trials for measuring the efficacy of vector control tools.

The efficacy of a vector control tool in reducing mosquito biting is crucial for its acceptability. The present study compared the vector density of Culex spp. And Mansonia spp. across clusters, which received two dual-active ingredient (a.i.) long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and a standard pyrethroid-only LLIN, and assessed the seasonality of these mosquito genera. A total of 85,723 Culex spp. and 144,025 Mansonia spp. were caught over the study period. The density of Culex and Mansonia was reduced in all three arms over the study period. There was no evidence of a significant reduction in the indoor or outdoor density of Culex spp. in either dual-a.i. LLIN arm as compared to the standard pyrethroid-only net arm. A similar trend was observed with Mansonia spp. A high density of Culex spp. was found both in rainy and dry seasons, while for Mansonia spp., this was mainly observed during the rainy season. These results suggest that the novel insecticides in the dual-a.i. LLINs did not have an additional impact on these species and that pyrethroids might still be effective on them. Further work is required to determine whether these species of mosquitoes have resistance to the insecticides tested in this trial.

Pyrethroid resistance is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of this study was to assess the insecticide resistance intensity in Anopheles gambiae s.l. (Diptera: Culicidae) in four districts of Benin in order to better understand how pyrethroid-only nets are likely to be effective. Thus, adult females of An. gambiae s.l., reared from field-collected larvae were used for assessing resistance intensity to permethrin and deltamethrin. They were tested at 1×, 5×, and 10× the diagnostic dose, using both WHO susceptibility tube testing and CDC bottle bioassays. Identification of molecular species, as well as of L1014F Kdr and Ace-1R mutations was performed using the PCR. The level of expression of biochemical enzymes was also evaluated. Overall, moderate to high resistance intensity to permethrin and deltamethrin was observed, irrespective of the testing method. While the L1014F Kdr frequency was high (>75%), Ace-1R was low (≤6%) in An. gambiaes.s. and Anopheles coluzzii, the two predominant species [52% (95% CI: 44.8-59.1) and 45% (95% CI: 38.0-52.2), respectively]. Anopheles arabiensis was found at very low frequency (3%, 95%CI: 1.1-6.4). For Biochemical analyses, α and ß-esterases were over-expressed in all four districts, while mixed-function oxidases (MFOs) were over-expressed in only one. Overall, the two testing methods led to comparable conclusions, though there were a few inconsistencies between them. The moderate-high resistance intensity observed in the study area suggests that dual active-ingredient (AI) long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) may provide better control of insecticide-resistant mosquitoes.

The present study investigated in 8 villages of the Plateau region the coverage, usage, physical integrity, and bio-efficacy of the Olyset nets distributed nationwide by the Benin's National Malaria Control Programme in July 2011. The questionnaire administered as well as the observations made in the households allowed estimating the coverage and usage rates of the 2011 Olyset nets. While their physical integrity was assessed through standard WHO methodology, their bio-efficacy was evaluated through gas chromatography, and WHO cone testing performed with the Kisumu susceptible strain. Mosquito collections through human landing catches (HLCs) were also performed in torn nets to assess if a loss of protection of sleepers occurred as the nets fabric integrity got more damaged. Nine months postdistribution, the coverage and usage rates of the 2011 Olyset nets were 67.4% (95% CI: 65.8-68.9) and 73.3% (95% CI: 70.7-75.8) respectively. About 28% of the 2011 Olyset nets were torn. A drastic drop of the insecticide quantity on the fibers of the nets [from 7.08 µg (95% CI: 5.74-8.42) to 0.2 µg (95% CI: 0.01-0.38)] as well as mortality rates <80% were observed with most nets evaluated. Moreover, the biting rates of An. gambiae s.l. (Diptera: Culicidae) inside torn nets increased in line with their fabric integrity loss. These data support the conclusion that future deployment of nets in the field must be strengthened by community sensitization on their correct use in order to postpone as much as possible appearance of holes and loss of insecticidal activity and encourage repairing of torn nets.

BACKGROUND: This study provides detailed characteristics of vector populations in preparation for a three-arm cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) aiming to compare the community impact of dual active-ingredient (AI) long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) that combine two novel insecticide classes-chlorfenapyr or pyriproxifen-with alpha-cypermethrin to improve the prevention of malaria transmitted by insecticide-resistant vectors compared to standard pyrethroid LLINs. METHODS: The study was carried out in 60 villages across Cove, Zangnanando and Ouinhi districts, southern Benin. Mosquito collections were performed using human landing catches (HLCs). After morphological identification, a sub-sample of Anopheles gambiae s.l. were dissected for parity, analyzed by PCR for species and presence of L1014F kdr mutation and by ELISA-CSP to identify Plasmodium falciparum sporozoite infection. WHO susceptibility tube tests were performed by exposing adult An. gambiae s.l., collected as larvae from each district, to 0.05% alphacypermethrin, 0.75% permethrin, 0.1% bendiocarb and 0.25% pirimiphos-methyl. Synergist assays were also conducted with exposure first to 4% PBO followed by alpha-cypermethrin. RESULTS: An. gambiae s.l. (n = 10807) was the main malaria vector complex found followed by Anopheles funestus s.l. (n = 397) and Anopheles nili (n = 82). An. gambiae s.l. was comprised of An. coluzzii (53.9%) and An. gambiae s.s. (46.1%), both displaying a frequency of the L1014F kdr mutation >80%. Although more than 80% of people slept under standard LLIN, human biting rate (HBR) in An. gambiae s.l. was higher indoors [26.5 bite/person/night (95% CI: 25.2-27.9)] than outdoors [18.5 b/p/n (95% CI: 17.4-19.6)], as were the trends for sporozoite rate (SR) [2.9% (95% CI: 1.7-4.8) vs 1.8% (95% CI: 0.6-3.8)] and entomological inoculation rate (EIR) [21.6 infected bites/person/month (95% CI: 20.4-22.8) vs 5.4 (95% CI: 4.8-6.0)]. Parous rate was 81.6% (95%CI: 75.4-88.4). An. gambiae s.l. was resistant to alpha-cypermethrin and permethrin but, fully susceptible to bendiocarb and pirimiphos-methyl. PBO pre-exposure followed by alpha-cypermethrin treatment induced a higher 24 hours mortality compared to alphacypermethrin alone but not exceeding 40%. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a high usage of standard pyrethroid LLINs, the study area is characterized by intense malaria transmission. The main vectors An. coluzzii and An. gambiae s.s. were both highly resistant to pyrethroids and displayed multiple resistance mechanisms, L1014F kdr mutation and mixed function oxidases. These conditions of the study area make it an appropriate site to conduct the trial that aims to assess the effect of novel dual-AI LLINs on malaria transmitted by insecticide-resistant vectors.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are currently the primary method of malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa and have contributed to a significant reduction in malaria burden over the past 15 years. However, this progress is threatened by the wide-scale selection of insecticide-resistant malaria vectors. It is, therefore, important to accelerate the generation of evidence for new classes of LLINs. METHODS: This protocol presents a three-arm superiority, single-blinded, cluster randomized controlled trial to evaluate the impact of 2 novel dual-active ingredient LLINs on epidemiological and entomological outcomes in Benin, a malaria-endemic area with highly pyrethroid-resistant vector populations. The study arms consist of (i) Royal Guard® LLIN, a net combining a pyrethroid (alpha-cypermethrin) plus an insect growth regulator (pyriproxyfen), which in the adult female is known to disrupt reproduction and egg fertility; (ii) Interceptor G2® LLIN, a net incorporating two adulticides (alpha-cypermethrin and chlorfenapyr) with different modes of action; and (iii) the control arm, Interceptor® LLIN, a pyrethroid (alpha-cypermethrin) only LLIN. In all arms, one net for every 2 people will be distributed to each household. Sixty clusters were identified and randomised 1:1:1 to each study arm. The primary outcome is malaria case incidence measured over 24 months through active case detection in a cohort of 25 children aged 6 months to 10 years, randomly selected from each cluster. Secondary outcomes include 1) malaria infection prevalence (all ages) and prevalence of moderate to severe anaemia in children under 5 years old, measured at 6 and 18 months post-intervention; 2) entomological indices measured every 3 months using human landing catches over 24 months. Insecticide resistance intensity will also be monitored over the study period. DISCUSSION: This study is the second cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of these next-generation LLINs to control malaria transmitted by insecticide-resistant mosquitoes. The results of this study will form part of the WHO evidence-based review to support potential public health recommendations of these nets and shape malaria control strategies of sub-Saharan Africa for the next decade. Malaria is the deadliest mosquito-borne disease and kills predominantly people in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The now widespread mosquito resistance to pyrethroids, with rapidly growing resistance to other insecticide classes recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), may overturn the successes gained in mosquito control in recent years. It is of utmost importance to search for new, inexpensive, and safe alternatives, with new modes of action, that might improve the efficacy of current insecticides. The efficacy of a novel mechanical insecticidal mineral derived from volcanic rock, ImergardTMWP, was investigated to determine its efficacy as a stand-alone residual wall spray and as a mixture with deltamethrin (K-Othrine® Polyzone) in experimental huts in Cove, Benin. The evaluation was conducted with susceptible (Kisumu) and wild-type Anopheles gambiae (s.l.). Deltamethrin applied alone demonstrated 40-45% mortality (at 72 h post-exposure) during the first four months, which declined to 25% at six months for wild An. gambiae from Cove. ImergardTMWP alone and mixed with deltamethrin, under the same assay conditions, produced 79-82% and 73-81% mortality, respectively, during the same six-month period. ImergardTMWP met the 80% WHO bio-efficacy threshold for residual activity for the first five months with 78% residual activity at six months. ImergardTMWP can be used as a mixture with chemical insecticides or as a stand-alone pesticide for mosquito control in Africa.

Background: The purpose of this report is to provide information on Culicidae diversity; biting behavior and spatio-seasonal variation of abundance of Anopheles gambiae s.l. and Culex quinquefasciatus in rural and urban settings of the Alibori and Donga regions, Northern Benin, where an indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaign to control malaria is planned. Methods: Both human landing catches, associated with pyrethrum spray catches were used to monitor the mosquito populations in 12 sites with 1 urban and 1 rural located in each of the 6 districts randomly selected in the two targeted regions. After morphological identification of all mosquito specimens, biting behavior and density of An. gambiae s.l. and Cx quinquefasciatus were studied. PCR was also performed on An. gambiae s.l., to identify sibling species and its seasonal variation. Results: A total of 10,367 mosquitoes were captured, related to 14 species of the genera, Anopheles, Aedes, Culex and Mansonia. Of the total species collection, 40.39% were An. gambiae s.l. and 56.85% were Cx. quinquefasciatus. An. gambiae s.l. was more abundant in Donga (2521 specimens) compared with Alibori (1666 specimens). The opposite trend was observed with Cx. quinquefasciatus (2162 specimens in Donga against 4028 in Alibori). An. gambiae s.l. was predominant and displayed a higher blood feeding rate in rural areas, whereas Cx. quinquefasciatus was in majority in urban areas. An. gambiae s.l. was more endophagic, whereas Cx. quinquefasciatus showed similar indoor and outdoor biting behavior. An. gambiae s.l. was composed of An. coluzzii found in majority in the drought, and An. gambiae, which was predominant in the rainy season. Conclusion: The predominance of the malaria vector, An. gambiae s.l. and their higher blood feeding rate and their significantly high endophagy in rural areas indicate that these areas should be primarily targeted with the IRS operations to have a substantial impact on malaria transmission. Endophagy, characteristic of An. gambiae s.l. in our study area, suggests that IRS will have a positive impact on vector control if implemented 1 week before June that is the onset of the rainy season.

BACKGROUND: In recognition of the threat of insecticide resistance in vectors of malaria, the WHO Global Malaria Programme recommends the development of an appropriate and comprehensive response to insecticide resistance. In principle, good resistance management practice requires the application of multiple insecticides of different modes of action, for example, in rotations and mixtures. Insecticides recommended by the World Health Organization for indoor residual spraying and long-lasting insecticide nets are limited. It is, therefore, judicious to prevent the rapid spread of insecticide resistance by evaluating new insecticides formulations with different modes of action and long residual effect. METHODS: Fludora® Fusion, a new neonicotinoid IRS formulation (a mixture of 500 g/kg clothianidin and 62.5 g/kg deltamethrin applied 200 mg ai/sqm + 25 mg ai/sqm, respectively) was tested. Small scale field evaluation of this product was conducted in the district of Dangbo in Benin, to compare its efficacy and residual effect on cement and mud walls against those of clothianidin 200 mg ai/sqm (WG 70) alone, and of deltamethrin 25 mg ai/sqm (WG 250) alone. WHO wall cone bioassays were conducted monthly with laboratory susceptible Anopheles "Kisumu" and wild Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (s.s.) population from Dangbo. The induced mortality by each treatment per wall substrate for 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h post exposure were recorded every month and analysed. RESULTS: Fludora® Fusion and clothianidin WG 70 showed mortality rates over 80% WHO bio-efficacy threshold on cement walls either with susceptible or resistant An. gambiae s.s. over a period of 10 and 9 months, respectively. Treatment with Fludora® Fusion and clothianidin WG 70 on the mud walls showed residual effect for 6 months and 5 months respectively against both susceptible and resistant mosquitoes. During the whole evaluation period, deltamethrin WG 250 showed mortality rates below 80% against resistant Anopheles population. Furthermore, the knock down rates observed with the Fludora® Fusion combination were significantly higher (p < 5%) than those induced by Clothiandin WG 70. CONCLUSION: Both the Fludora® Fusion combination and clothianidin alone showed very good and lasting efficacy for IRS against resistant Anopheles with some residual benefit provided by the combination. The residual efficacy of the Fludora® Fusion combination evaluated at 10 months shows this product is a good candidate for IRS interventions.

BACKGROUND: Scale-up of the distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor residual spraying with insecticides over the last decade have contributed to the considerable decrease of malaria morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to the increasing pyrethroid resistance intensity and the spread of carbamate resistance in Anopheles gambiae (s.s.) mosquitoes and the limited number of insecticides recommended by the WHO for vector control, alternative insecticide formulations for IRS with long-lasting residual activity are required to sustain the gains obtained in most malaria-endemic countries. METHODS: SumiShield 50WG (clothianidin 300 mg ai/m2) developed by Sumitomo Chemical was evaluated alongside deltamethrin 25 mg ai/m2 (K-Othrine 250 WG) against a pyrethroid resistant Anopheles gambiae (s.l.) population in experimental huts in Covè, Benin. Residual activity was also tested in cone bioassays with the susceptible An. gambiae "Kisumu" strain and the local wild resistant population. RESULTS: The results showed very low toxicity from deltamethrin (mortality rates ranged between 1-40%) against host-seeking resistant Anopheles populations. SumiShield in contrast gave an overall mean mortality of 91.7% at the 120 h observation across the eight- month observation period following spraying. The residual activity measured using cone tests was over the 80% WHO threshold for 24 weeks for resistant wild Anopheles population and 32 weeks for the susceptible strain "Kisumu" after the spraying. CONCLUSIONS: SumiShield is a good candidate for IRS in areas of permanent malaria transmission and where Anopheles populations are resistant to other conventional insecticides such as pyrethroids. It would be interesting to complete experimental huts studies by assessing the efficacy and residual effect of SumiShield 50WG at community level (small-scale field testing) in an area where vectors are highly resistant to insecticides.

BACKGROUND: From 2008 to 2013, a prevention intervention against malaria based on indoor residual spraying (IRS) was implemented in Benin. From 2008 to 2012, Ficam M(®), a bendiocarb-containing product was used for house spraying, in association with pirimiphos methyl EC (Actellic EC) in 2013. This operation aimed to strengthen the effectiveness of treated nets so as to expedite the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): the reduction of morbidity and mortality due to malaria by 75 % from 2000 to 2015. METHODS: Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) was implemented in order to evaluate the impact of IRS intervention on malaria transmission. Anopheles gambiae s.l. populations were sampled by human landing catch. In addition, window exit traps and pyrethrum spray catches were performed to assess exophagic behaviour of Anopheles vectors the main malaria vector in the treated areas. The residual activity of insecticide in the treated walls was also assessed using WHO bioassay test. RESULTS: The purpose of this project was to draw attention to new challenges and future prospects for the success of IRS in Benin. The main strength of the intervention was a large-scale operation in which more than 80 % of the houses were treated due to the strong adhesion of population. In addition, a significant reduction of the EIR in areas under IRS were observed. However, there were many challenges including the high cost of IRS implementation and the identification of suitable areas to implement IRS. This was because of the low and short residual effect of the insecticides recommended for IRS and the management strategy for vector resistance to insecticides. This indicated that challenges are accompanied by suggested solutions. For the cost of IRS to be accessible to states, then local organizations need to be created in partnership with the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) in order to ensure relevant planning and implementation of IRS. CONCLUSION: As an anticipatory measure against vector resistance, this paper proposes various methods, such as periodic IRS based on a combination of two or three insecticides of different classes used in rotation every two or three years.

BACKGROUND: To better control malaria, the clear and urgent need is for improved data to inform decision makers, but in several African countries, there is a lack of baseline data on vectors and variation in the intensity of malaria transmission. This has resulted in the implementation of vector control efforts that ignore variation in vector behaviour and intensity of transmission, an approach that is most often not cost-effective. This study presents a detailed entomological description of mosquito distribution and variation in potentially transmissible contacts of Plasmodium falciparum following a south to north transect in Benin. METHOD: The study was conducted in five locations where environmental parameters were different and malaria prevalence ranged between 14 and 51%. The locations represent the main eco-epidemiological malaria areas in Benin. Mosquitoes were collected using human landing catches, pyrethrum spray catches and windows traps. They were taxonomically and molecularly identified. Head-thoraces of Anopheles gambiae s.l. were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Entomological indicators were estimated following WHO guidelines. RESULTS: The results showed variation between location and period in distribution of Anopheles coluzzii, An. gambiae, and Anopheles arabiensis (p < 0.05). An extension of the reported range of An. arabiensis was also observed. Densities of malaria vectors varied significantly between rural and urban sites, however, indoor/outdoor biting ratios remained constant. Proportions of malaria vectors with circumsporozoite protein of P. falciparum were similar between locations. The entomological inoculation rates ranged between zero and eight bites/man/night with significant variations between areas.Four profiles of human exposure to infectious malaria vector bites were observed and included location with one season of high transmission (June - August), two seasons of lower transmission (March-August; October-November), moderate continuous transmission season, and high continuous transmission season of P. falciparum. CONCLUSION: The study revealed several entomological patterns in transmission of P. falciparum in Benin. The data could be used for purposes of planning a more cost-effective vector control strategy, by stratifying the country into higher and lower transmission zones. The information could also be used to guide extension of indoor residual spray based on a targeted use of IRS at sites where the duration of insecticidal effect following spraying coincides with the peak transmission period.

BACKGROUND: An investigation carried out in Benin has shown that, in some areas close to rivers where density of mosquitoes is high, long-lasting, insecticidal bed nets (LLINs) are permanently used. In such areas, LLINs are washed every month. Based on this situation, the 20-wash minimum efficacy advised by the manufacturers would be inadequate. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of LifeNet®, Olyset® and Permanet® 2.0 washed several times against Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto (s.s.) populations, which have developed high resistance to pyrethroids. METHODS: Efficacy of LifeNet®, Olyset® and PermaNet® 2.0 washed 30 and 40 times was expressed in terms of blood-feeding inhibition rate, deterrence, induced exophily and mortality rates. This WHOPES phase II evaluation, conducted in experimental huts in Akron (southern Benin) and in Malanville (northern Benin), was accompanied by WHOPES Phase I evaluation. RESULTS: Over 40 successive washes, LifeNet® induced a mortality rate over 80% in phase I. However, beyond 10 washes, Permanet® 2.0 and Olyset induced dramatically reduced mortality rates, respectively 12.5 and 2.5%. With regard to Phase II results, unwashed LifeNet®, LifeNet® and Olyset® washed 30 and 40 times induced a similar exophily rate per study site (at least 58% in Malanville and at least 71% in Akron). Regarding blood feeding inhibition, LifeNet® and Olyset® washed 30 and 40 times significantly reduced wild An. gambiae s.s. blood feeding showing a similar personal protection as unwashed LifeNet®. LifeNet® washed 30 and 40 times induced mortality rates significantly higher than those induced by Olyset® and Permanet® 2.0 (P < 0,05). CONCLUSION: LifeNet®, followed by Olyset®, have shown good efficacy against host-seeking resistant An. gambiae s.s. population in experimental huts in Benin. Lifenet® have shown to be an effective and promising vector control tool to prevent malaria in areas where repeated washings is a common practice in the community.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control efforts and elimination in Africa are being challenged by the development of resistance of parasites to antimalarial drugs and vectors to insecticides. We investigated whether the combination of long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LLINs) with indoor residual spraying (IRS) or carbamate-treated plastic sheeting (CTPS) conferred enhanced protection against malaria and better management of pyrethroid-resistance in vectors than did LLINs alone. METHODS: We did a cluster randomised controlled trial in 28 villages in southern Benin, west Africa. Inclusion criteria of the villages were moderate level of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors and minimum distance between villages of 2 km. We assessed four malaria vector control interventions: LLIN targeted coverage to pregnant women and children younger than 6 years (TLLIN, reference group), LLIN universal coverage of all sleeping units (ULLIN), TLLIN plus full coverage of carbamate-IRS applied every 8 months (TLLIN+IRS), and ULLIN plus full coverage of CTPS lined up to the upper part of the household walls (ULLIN+CTPS). The interventions were allocated to villages by a block randomisation on the basis of preliminary surveys and children of each village were randomly selected to participate with computer-generated numbers. The primary endpoint was the incidence density rate of Plasmodium falciparum clinical malaria in children younger than 6 years as was analysed by Poisson regression taking into account the effect of age and the sampling design with a generalised estimating equation approach. Clinical and parasitological information were obtained by active case detection of malaria episodes during 12 periods of 6 consecutive days scheduled at six weekly intervals and by cross-sectional surveys of asymptomatic plasmodial infections. Children or study investigators were not masked to study group. This study is registered with Current Controlled Trials, number ISRCTN07404145. FINDINGS: Of 58 villages assessed, 28 were randomly assigned to intervention groups. 413-429 children were followed up in each intervention group for 18 months. The clinical incidence density of malaria was not reduced in the children from the ULLIN group (incidence density rate 0·95, 95% CI 0·67-1·36, p=0·79), nor in those from the TLLIN+IRS group (1·32, 0·90-1·93, p=0·15) or from the ULLIN+CTPS group (1·05, 0·75-1·48, p=0·77) compared with the reference group (TLLIN). The same trend was observed with the prevalence and parasite density of asymptomatic infections (non significant regression coefficients). INTERPRETATION: No significant benefit for reducing malaria morbidity, infection, and transmission was reported when combining LLIN+IRS or LLIN+CTPS compared with a background of LLIN coverage. These findings are important for national malaria control programmes and should help the design of more cost-effective strategies for malaria control and elimination.
