RESUMO

Aim: The aim of the study was to estimate the relationship between bladder neck hypermobility as assessed by ultrasound and the occurrence of stress urinary incontinence as measured with the UDI-6 questionnaire in primiparous women 9-18 months postpartum. Materials and methods: The study included 100 women 9-18 months after their first delivery, 19% of whom (study group) presented with urethral hypermobility. Ultrasound was used to determine the position and mobility of the bladder neck in order to assess the urethral hypermobility. A vector of ≥15 mm was defined as urethral hypermobility. Symptoms of stress urinary incontinence were assessed using question 3 of the UDI-6 questionnaire, in which the presence of symptoms was defined as a response rated from 1 to 4. Results: We demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between urethral hypermobility and the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence with a statistical significance level of p <0.002. Conclusions: Stress urinary incontinence is a common disorder in women, the pathophysiology of which is not fully understood. It has adverse effects on the quality of life, perception of one's own body and sexual function. Impairment of urethral fixation may play an important role in the pathophysiology of this common form of urinary incontinence. The study showed that urethral hypermobility, as assessed by ultrasound, contributes to stress urinary incontinence, as measured with the UDI-6 score. Although stress urinary incontinence is a multifactorial disorder influenced by anatomical changes and congenital anatomical features, it is easily diagnosed. Suburethral slings are an effective surgical technique; however, the incidence of postoperative voiding dysfunction or recurrent stress urinary incontinence is 10-20%. Therefore, an assessment of anatomical changes in stress urinary incontinence may help individualize the surgical strategy.

RESUMO

In this work, UV-B irradiation, an environmentally friendly modification method, was applied to corn and potato carbohydrates. The influence of irradiation on starch properties was compared with that observed for starch oxidation with NaClO. The changes in the structures of starch carbohydrates were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and chromatographic methods. Functional properties such as viscosity, water binding capacity and solubility as well as pasting characteristics and thermodynamic parameters of gelatinization, resulting from structural changes were determined. UV-B irradiation was found to be a milder modification method than chemical oxidation. The potato carbohydrates, especially amylose, appeared to be more susceptible to changes upon irradiation, whereas corn ones, particularly amylopectin, were more stable and their properties changed to a smaller extent. Similarly, functional properties were not significantly influenced by UV-B treatment. EPR studies revealed the mechanism of depolymerization of starch carbohydrates via formation of stable carbon-centered radicals.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the effects of furcellaran−gelatine (FUR/GEL) coatings incorporated with herb extracts on the quality retention of carp fish during refrigeration. Nutmeg, rosemary, thyme, milfoil, marjoram, parsley, turmeric, basil and ginger were subjected to water and ethanol extraction methods (10% concentration of herbs). The water extractions of the rosemary and thyme (5%) were used for the further development of coatings due to their high 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH: 85.49 and 83.28%) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power Assay values (FRAP: 0.46 and 0.56 mM/L) (p < 0.05), respectively. A new, ready-to-cook product with the coatings (carp fillets) was evaluated regarding quality in terms of colour parameters, texture profile, water activity, Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARSs) and sensory analyses during 12 days of storage at 4 °C. The results show that the colour of the carp fillets treated with the rosemary and thyme extracts became slightly darker and had a propensity towards redness and yellowness. In contrast to the control group, the carp fillets stored in the coatings with the rosemary extract effectively slowed the lipid oxidation processes. Therefore, the innovative coatings produced from carp processing waste may have high potential as components in convenience food products and could extend the shelf-life of carp fillets during refrigerated storage. However, further research is needed to assess the microbiological stability of the obtained food products.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the team appointed by the Board of the Urogynecology Section of the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (PSGO) was to develop this interdisciplinary Guideline for the diagnostic assessment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women, based on the available literature, expert knowledge and opinion, as well as everyday practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A review of the literature, including current international guidelines and earlier PSGO recommendations (2010-2020) about POP, was conducted. RESULTS: The steps of the diagnostic assessment for patients with POP, subdivided into initial and specialized diagnostics, have been presented. Indications for specialized diagnostic assessment have also been listed. In case of surgical treatment, the patient may be referred solely based on the initial diagnostics or after certain elements of the specialized diagnostics have been completed. CONCLUSIONS: Due to inconclusive data, the scope of the diagnostic process for POP is individualized for each patient and depends on patient-reported symptoms, initial diagnostic findings, surgical history, management plan, availability of the equipment, and cost.

RESUMO

The aim of the work was to develop an easy-to-follow protocol for designing novel functional products with the addition of food industry by-products using design thinking techniques. As a result, a 12-step protocol has been designed and presented. The protocol consists of steps from the initial formation of the design team, through all the stages of the production and prototyping, until establishing the final storage conditions and creating final documentation. The protocol has been validated and explained using a case study in which a fish industry by-product hydrolysate with bioactive properties was used to develop a novel functional food product for physically active people: a date bar with carp meat and carp skin gelatin hydrolysate. Following the 12 steps presented in the protocol resulted in developing a food product with high nutritional value and antioxidant power which remains stable during storage at reduced temperatures. Moreover, the product is characterized by good sensory qualities and can be easily implemented into full-scale production. The newly designed protocol is an easy-to-follow method that could be used in almost any kind of food industry sector to sucesfully develop user-focused functional food products with by-product addition.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Bovine hide underlayer is used to manufacture collagen casings for sausage production. Edible collagen casings and natural ovine casing (as a reference) were chosen for analysis. The collagen casings (intended for: A - breakfast sausages, B - scalded sausages and C - dried sausages) were manufactured with the use of glyoxal as a cross-linking agent. The casings properties along with the quality of the sausages manufactured in those casings was analyzed. RESULTS: Casing A had a higher swelling capacity and water solubility, a* and b* color parameters, and wet elongation at break values, as well as a lower shrinking temperature. The remaining mechanical and water parameters were comparable to other collagen casings. The ovine casing contained more water, and was redder and less yellow compared to the collagen casings, whereas swelling, solubility and water vapor permeability were higher. The sausages in casing A were the softest and had the highest a* and b* color parameters. The results of the sensory analysis indicate that the sausages in casing B exhibited the highest quality on a three-point scale among the tested sausages and were also the most acceptable for judges. The ovine casing was graded as the hardest during cutting and also when in the mouth. CONCLUSION: By contrast to the producer's descriptions, the collagen casings were similar with respect to many properties. The differences between sausages in collagen casings were not so distinct as might be expected. Despite our expectations, the sausages in the natural casing were not rated as the best compared to sausages in collagen casings in the sensory analysis. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

The introduction of suburethral sling was a breakthrough in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women. The method is highly effective. However, the mechanism of action of a sling and the reasons for surgical failures are not fully understood. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the impact of sling-pubic symphysis distance on eliminating the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence and urethral funneling. Materials and methods: The analysis included 106 patients who reported 3 to 6 months after sling placement for a follow-up visit encompassing clinical examination and standard ultrasonography. We evaluated the position of sling in relation to the pubic symphysis, urethral length, as well as urethral funneling length and width. Results: Cure criteria were met by 91 patients. Elimination of urethral funneling was achieved in 76.9% (n = 70) of cured patients. Urethral funneling was still present, yet shorter by a mean of 10.2 mm (p = 0.02) than before surgery in the remaining cured patients. There was a 32.5% reduction in the mean relative length of urethral funneling (p = 0.002). No significant differences were found in the pre- and postoperative funneling width. The tape-pubic symphysis distance was lower in cured women: 23.2 mm vs. 26.1 mm in failed women (p = 0.04). Similar observations were made for cured patients with persistent urethral funneling vs. failed patients (22.47 mm vs. 26.0 mm, p = 0.027). There were no differences between cured patients without urethral funneling and cured patients with persistent postoperative funneling (23.5 mm; 22.5 mm; p = 0.417). Conclusions: Tape position in relation to the pubic symphysis is important for the elimination of stress urinary incontinence. Sling location closer to the pubic symphysis reduces the length of urethral funneling, but has no effects on its width in cured patients with persistent postoperative funneling.

RESUMO

Starches isolated from pumpkin fruits, lentil and quinoa seeds were used to prepare edible films. Physicochemical, thermal and mechanical properties of films were determined and compared with potato-based starch (PS) film. It was found that botanical origin of starch has a crucial effect on the films properties. The much lower solubility and higher swelling capacity compared to PS film exhibited lentil and pumpkin starch-based films, respectively. All of the films exhibited significantly higher water vapor permeability compared to PS one. Tensile strength and elongation at break of the films varied between 8.98 and 13.85 MPa, and 3.35 to 4.44%, respectively. All of the films acted as a solid-like materials with prevalently elastic behavior and exhibited endothermic peaks in DSC measurement in the range of 249-281 °C, referred to the melting of films. This study demonstrated that starches from non-conventional sources are good alternative to conventional to develop edible films.

RESUMO

Seeds and sprouts are of considerable interest due to their numerous pro-health benefits. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of germination on the mineral composition (performed by flame absorption atomic spectroscopy), total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, as well as phenolic profiles (before and after alkaline hydrolysis by high-performance liquid chromatography) of chia, golden flax, evening primrose, phacelia and fenugreek seeds. Generally, significant (p < 0.05) changes in the individual minerals composition of the seeds, improvement of their antioxidant properties, as well as increase in levels of individual phenolic compounds was found after seeds germination. Alkaline hydrolysis allowed to release free forms of phenolics and to confirm (chromatographically) their significantly higher amounts when compared to the nonhydrolyzed fraction. Gallic, protocatechuic, caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic and sinapic acids, as well as quercetin and kaempferol were identified in analyzed seeds and sprouts. Sprouts exhibited better nutritional values than their un-germinated forms.

RESUMO

The paper discusses how microwave radiation and mineral additives affect selected physical and chemical properties of potato starch. Potato starch was irradiated with microwaves of 440 W or 800 W and then enriched with ions of potassium, magnesium, copper, or iron. Atomic absorption spectroscopy showed an effective incorporation of ions, while mineral saturation depended on both the microwave radiation density and the element being introduced. The data obtained prove that the microwave radiation and saturation with minerals affect the rheology and thermal characteristics of the samples under examination. Both the degree and the vector of the transformation depend on the microwave output and the mineral component introduced. Generation of radicals depends on starch degradation at high temperature while microwaves affect the number of the radicals formed. Amounts of the heat-generated radicals depend on the microwave output and the type of metal ions introduced into the starch structure.

RESUMO

Modified maize starches were obtained by the esterification of native starch with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) at levels of 3% or 9%, and afterwards by its complexation with metal ions. The degree of substitution, contents of metal ions, hydrodynamic size distribution, intrinsic viscosity, pasting characteristics of the tested starches, and pastes surface tension were determined. Moreover, emulsions prepared from the modified starches were studied for oil droplet size distribution and storage stability. Reduction of hydrodynamic size and intrinsic viscosity was observed in octentyl succinate starch (OS starch) esterified with 3% OSA complexed with magnesium or calcium. The presence of potassium in both esterified starches increased their water binding capacity and solubility in water. In most cases, complexation with metal ions decreased viscosity of OS starch pastes. Emulsions prepared from the modified starches had smaller oil droplets and were more stable during storage, compared to the systems prepared from non-esterified starch.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of germination on the phenolic acids and flavonoids profile, as well as antioxidant activity (AA), in selected edible seeds of mung beans, radish, broccoli and sunflower. Germination increased the total phenolic (TP) and flavonoid (TF) levels, as well as the AA of the seeds, and influenced the profile of free and bound phenolic compounds. Among the samples, mung bean was characterised by lowest levels of TP and TF, as well as AA, evaluated using ABTS, DPPH and FRAP assays. Sunflower and radish sprouts were the most rich in phenolic compounds. Insignificant amounts of free phenolic acids were found in the free phenolic acid fraction; alkaline hydrolysis of the seeds and sprouts extracts provided the majority of the phenolic acids. The amounts of free and bound flavonoids were inconsiderable both for seeds and sprouts.
