RESUMO

PurposeThe purpose of the study was to investigate ocular hypertensive effect of exogenous glucosamine in comparison with placebo in patients with osteoarthritis.Patients and methodsIn this double-masked randomized clinical trial, 88 patients with osteoarthritis were included. Forty-four patients were randomized into either glucosamine sulfate or the placebo group.Comprehensive ophthalmologic exam including intraocular pressure (IOP) at baseline, month 1, and 3 was performed. Ocular response analyzer parameters were also checked at baseline and month 3.ResultsThe mean IOP at the time of presentation was 12.4±2.7 mm Hg in glucosamine and 13±2.8 mm Hg in the placebo group (P=0.329). At month 1 the corresponding values were 12.6±2.4 and 12.9±2.4 mm Hg (P=0.868), and at 3 months follow-up were 13.5±2.3 and 13±2.7 mm Hg (P=0.002), respectively. About 34.1% in treatment and 12.5% in the placebo group had clinically significant (defined as ≥ 2 mm Hg) rise in IOP at final follow-up (P=0.023). Mean age in those with significant rise in IOP was 66 vs 57.7 years in patients with <2 mm Hg (P=0.034). The ORA parameters remained unchanged in both the groups during the course of study.ConclusionGlucosamine supplement therapy causes statistically significant rise of IOP, which is more pronounced in elderly patients. Clinical implication of this finding needs further evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: Pre-operative differentiation of salivary gland neoplasms is of great importance. This study was designed to evaluate the use of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) for differentiation between malignant, Warthin and benign non-Warthin (BNW) neoplasms of major salivary glands. METHODS: 46 major salivary gland tumours (SGTs) underwent pre-operative DCE-MRI. Post-surgical histopathological evaluation showed 30 BNW, 6 Warthin and 10 malignant tumours. Time-signal intensity curves (TICs) were categorized as (a) Tpeak >43 s and washout ratio at 180 s (WR180) <4.6%; (b) Tpeak <43 s and WR >22%; (c) Tpeak >43 s and WR180 = 4.6-22.0% RESULTS: Accuracy of Tpeak was 98.9% for differentiation between BNW and Warthin tumours, 83.7% between BNW and malignant and 80% between malignant and Warthin tumours. All Warthin tumours showed Tpeak ≤43 s, while one BNW had Tpeak <43 s. A Tpeak <63.5 s differentiated 8/10 (80%) malignant tumours from BNW tumours, whereas 4/30 of BNW tumours had a Tpeak <63.5 s. Two malignant tumours had Tpeak <43 s. WR180 had an accuracy of 100% for differentiation between Warthin and BNW tumours, 87.3% between BNW and malignant, and 93.3% between Warthin and malignant tumours. 29 (96.7%) BNW tumours had a washout <4.60%, while 8 (80%) malignant tumours had a washout >4.60%. All Warthin tumours had a WR180 >22%, while two malignant tumours had a WR180 >22%. 29/30 of BNW tumours demonstrated TIC curve Type A and 1 tumour demonstrated Type C. 6/10 of malignant tumours had TIC Type C, 2 had TIC Type A and 2 Type B. All Warthin tumours were categorized as Type B. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that DCE-MRI could be helpful in pre-operative differentiation of SGTs; especially for discrimination between Warthin and BNW tumours.

Distribution of Mucilage Cells (MC) in leaves and petals of two species of Malva L. : Malva neglecta Wallr and M. nicaeensis All, one species of Altheae L.: A. officinalis L. and one species of Alcea L: A. angulata (Freyn and Sint.) Freyn and Sint. ex Iljin, have studied. Except ofA. angulata that mucilage cells observed both in epidermis and mesophyll of leaves, in the others mucilage cells confined to epidermis cells. All of species have mucilage cells in the petals. The area of the mucilaginous elements in the leaves and petals of species determined planimetrically on definite cross-sections was studied as a comparative element to the mucilage content determined by extracting the raw mucilage by Hot Extraction Method (HEM) and then by comparing the dry weight, comparison between species was done. A correlation between the greater area of the mucilaginous elements and the mucilage content measured by methods mentioned was shown, basing on different microscopic examination of cross-sections of the organs fixed and stained with ruthenium red. The results were shown that mucilage content in the leaves of Malva neglecta was more than the others and mucilage content in petals of Malva neglecta was more than the others.

AIMS: To evaluate a possible relationship between central corneal thickness (CCT) and optic disc area in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: Patients with POAG underwent eye examination, optic disc imaging with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II (HRT II) and ultrasound corneal pachymetry. Exclusion criteria were prior ocular surgery and low-quality HRT II images (HRT standard deviation (SD) >50). Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to assess the associations between CCT and optic disc area. RESULTS: 212 eyes of 137 patients with POAG were examined. In all, 66 (48%) subjects were women, 104 (76%) were Caucasian, 26 (19%) African-American and 7 (5%) other races. 72 eyes remained after excluding those with prior intraocular surgery and low-quality HRT II images. In a univariate analysis of this group, CCT was inversely correlated with optic disc surface area (Pearson's correlation coefficient r = -0.284, p = 0.036, n = 72). Mean (SD) disc area was 2 (0.53) mm(2) (n = 160). Caucasians had significantly smaller discs (p<0.001) than other races (Caucasian 1.9 (0.47) mm(2) (n = 119), African-Americans 2.4 (0.54) mm(2) (n = 31), other races 2.3 (0.45) mm(2) (n = 10)). CONCLUSION: CCT is inversely correlated to optic disc area. Although thicker corneas have been recognised to cause slight overestimation of true intraocular pressure (IOP), they may also indicate the presence of a substantially smaller, and thus more robust, optic nerve head. People with thinner corneas which slightly underestimate the true IOP may also have larger and more deformable optic discs.
