RESUMO

Background: Urolithiasis in dogs is a disorder of the urinary tract caused by the development of crystals. These crystals are composed of minerals such as phosphates, oxalates, urates, cystine, carbonates, and silica. It can be fatal if the diagnosis and treatment are inaccurate. This report aims to report a case of urolithiasis in a Toy Poodle dog. Case Description: A 2-year-old male Toy Poodle dog weighing 4.2 kg with black hair, and having trouble urinating was presented to Prof. Soeparwi Animal Hospital, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. The dog is examined physically and, in the laboratory, diagnosed and continued with operative therapy. The history and physical examination revealed that the dog had been experiencing hematuria, stranguria, and oliguria for 2 months, with the last few days accompanied by decreased appetite. The dog exhibited decreased skin turgor, a capillary refill time (CRT) of less than 2 seconds, signs of pain and distress during urination, and palpation of distended urinary vesicles. Ultrasound scans revealed uroliths in the urinary vesica, which were identified by an acoustic shadow. Blood tests indicated a decrease in hematocrit and erythrocytes along with an increase in leukocytes. Urolithiasis was diagnosed in the case dog based on anamnesis, physical examination, hematological examination, and ultrasonography. Subsequently, a cystotomy was performed, and uroliths located in urinary vesicles were removed. The dog received ceftriaxone injections at 15 mg/kg body weight and vitamin B-complex injections at a concentration of 10 mg/kg body weight for 5 days. Four days post-surgery, the case dog was able to successfully urinate and pass clean urine. Conclusion: The Toy Poodle dog was diagnosed with silica urolithiasis in the urinary vesicles and the urolith is quite large. Cystotomy was performed to remove the urolith. Postoperative care were included the administration of antibiotics and vitamins to facilitate the healing process. The condition of the Poodle toy dog improved.

Background: Angiogenesis is the process through which new blood vessels are formed from existing ones. This process plays an important role in supplying the oxygen and nutrients needed for cellular metabolism and eliminating cell debris during wound healing. Snail mucus can bind to several factors that stimulate angiogenesis, including vascular endothelial growth factor, platelet-derived growth factor, and fibroblast growth factor. The aim of this study is to observe changes in angiogenesis during the healing of wounds topically applied with snail mucus. Methods: Punch biopsy was performed on the back of male Wistar rats to obtain four wounds, and different concentrations of snail mucus were applied to each of these wounds. The animals were sacrificed on days 2, 4, and 7 to observe the extent of angiogenesis during wound healing by microscopy. Results: Two-way ANOVA showed differences in number of blood vessels formed (p = 0.00) and day of observation (p = 0.00) between groups. Post hoc Tukey's HSD test showed that 24% snail mucus treatment does not significantly affect wound healing (p = 0.488); by contrast, treatment with 48% and 96% snail mucus demonstrated significant effects on angiogenesis (p = 0.01). Spearman's test showed interactive effects between snail mucus concentration and day of observation on the extent of angiogenesis (p = 0.001, R = 0.946). Conclusion: Topical application of snail mucus gel can increase angiogenesis during wound healing in Wistar rat skin.

AIM: n-Propanol extracts from fresh, boiled, and fermented seeds were studied to evaluate their neuroprotective effects in a Parkinson's disease (PD) rat model, based on the total number of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats were induced with paraquat dichloride at a dosage of 7 mg/kg BW intraperitoneally twice a week and at the same time supplemented with extract at a dosage of 70 mg/kg BW orally every day for 3 weeks. On the 24th day, all rats were perfused and fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde. The left part of the SNpc was processed for immunohistochemical staining with tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-antibody. The total number of DA neurons in SNpc was evaluated with a stereological method. RESULTS: TH-immunoreactive cells found in the SNpc were identified as DA neurons. The average total number of DA neurons in the SNpc increased significantly in the PD rat model that was given an n-propanol extract of boiled and fermented seeds compared with a control PD rat model. Surprisingly, there was no significant difference in the average total number of DA neurons in SNpc between the PD rat model that was given n-propanol extract of fresh seeds and the control PD rat model. CONCLUSION: n-Propanol extract of boiled and fermented seeds could produce a higher neuroprotective effect against DA neuron than fresh seeds in a PD rat model.

The organization and chemical development of the area postrema (AP) in the macaque monkey was studied by immunohistochemistry imaged with conventional and confocal microscopy from day 40 of gestation to adulthood. The thin ependyma of the adult was found to develop from a thick continuous structure beginning in the second trimester. It was later invaded by tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactive (TH+) and dopamine beta-hydroxylase immunoreactive (DBH+) cells and fibers, suggesting a possible route for release of neurotransmitter directly into ventricular cerebrospinal fluid. Other TH+ and/or DBH+ fibers were found in close approximation to blood vessels. Prominent vascularity of the parenchyma of AP was present late in the first trimester (fetal day (Fd)57 in the macaque) and increased further until birth. By contrast, the underlying solitary nucleus was hypervascular at Fd57, but its vascularity rapidly declined by late in the second trimester. TH+ neurons first appeared late in the first trimester, and DBH+ neurons appeared in the second trimester; these findings are consistent with the view that catecholaminergic cells in AP are the earliest members of the A2 noradrenergic group. Catecholaminergic cells or fibers in AP contained little labeling for synaptic vesicular proteins, suggesting that the release of neurotransmitter there may not involve a synaptic mechanism. Synapses were first observed in mid-second trimester, and most were associated with GABA+ fibers.
