Background and Objectives: Differentiating between a high-grade glioma (HGG) and solitary cerebral metastasis presents a challenge when using standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) alone. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), an advanced MRI technique, may assist in resolving this diagnostic dilemma. N-acetylaspartate (NAA), an amino acid found uniquely in the central nervous system and in high concentrations in neurons, typically suggests HGG over metastatic lesions in spectra from ring-enhancing lesions. This study investigates exceptions to this norm. Materials and Methods: We conducted an MRS study on 49 histologically confirmed and previously untreated patients with brain metastases, employing single-voxel (SVS) techniques with short and long echo times, as well as magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI). Results: In our cohort, 44 out of 49 (90%) patients demonstrated a typical MR spectroscopic profile consistent with secondary deposits: a Cho peak, very low or absent Cr, absence of NAA, and the presence of lipids. A peak at approximately 2 ppm, termed the "NAA-like peak", was present in spectra obtained with both short and long echo times. Among the MRS data from 49 individuals, we observed a peak at 2.0 ppm in five brain metastases from mucinous carcinoma of the breast, mucinous non-small-cell lung adenocarcinoma, two metastatic melanomas, and one metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer. Pathohistological verification of mucin in two of these five cases suggested this peak likely represents N-acetyl glycoproteins, indicative of mucin expression in cancer cells. Conclusions: The identification of a prominent peak at 2.0 ppm could be a valuable diagnostic marker for distinguishing single ring-enhancing lesions, potentially associated with mucin-expressing metastases, offering a new avenue for diagnostic specificity in challenging cases.

INTRODUCTION: Undifferentiated uterine sarcoma is a rare histological subtype of uterine sarcoma. This study aimed to summarize the clinical and pathological presentation of this case. CASE REPORT: A 51-years-old patient was admitted to the clinic because of severe pain in the lower abdomen, and scanty bleeding from the genitals. Gynecological examination revealed an enlarged uterus. Conventional and Doppler transvaginal sonography detected a tumorously altered uterus with a maximum diameter of 20 cm a tumefaction with unclear borders and a diameter of 10 cm, with hyperechoic and hypoechoic fields within the tumefaction, presenting pathological vascularization and reduced values of the (Pulsatile index  ≤ 1) and (Resistance index  ≤ 0.40). Preoperatively, the chest, abdomen, and pelvis were examined. The patient underwent surgery and total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and partial omentectomy, with complete removal of the tumor. A pathohistological diagnosis, of undifferentiated uterine sarcoma, was made by excluding other types of uterine sarcomas. At the control examination after completion of chemotherapy, recurrence was ascertained. CONCLUSION: undifferentiated uterine sarcoma is an aggressive malignant tumor that in most cases shows rapid progression of the disease after complete resection of the tumor, with a poor prognosis.

Background and objective: Sclerosing pneumocytoma is a rare, benign tumor of the lung that represents a diagnostic challenge due to the diversity of pathohistological findings. The aim of this study was to present a 10-year experience with sclerosing pneumocytoma of a large center for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases, and to emphasize differential diagnostic dilemmas as a potential source of errors. Material and Methods: This represents a retrospective study of six patients diagnosed and treated with sclerosing pneumocytoma in the 10-year period. The study analyzed various parameters, which are: Sex, age, symptoms, size and localization of the tumor, and its gross and histological features. Results: Sclerosing pneumocytoma was more frequently diagnosed in females (83.34%). The patients ranged in age from 38 to 61. Most of the patients (66.66%) were asymptomatic. Two patients underwent a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, two patients had a video-assisted minithoracotomy, and two patients underwent a thoracotomy in order to remove the tumor. The tumor was localized in the left lower lobe, in the right upper lobe, and in the right lower lobe in 50%, 33.34%, and 16.66% of patients, respectively. The tumor size ranged from 1 to 2.5 cm. A pathohistological examination of all six cases reported that all four major histological patterns were found in tissue sections: solid, papillary, sclerosing, and hemorrhagic. In all six cases, an immunohistochemical analysis showed positive expression of TTF-1 and panCK in surface epithelial cells, and TTF-1 positivity and panCK negativity in round stromal cells. Conclusions: Sclerosing pneumocytoma is a strictly histological diagnosis supported by clinical and radiological findings and corresponding immunohistochemical methods. Lung pathologists should always keep this tumor in mind, since its spectrum of differential diagnosis is wide, and therefore it can be an important diagnostic pitfall.

PURPOSE: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a diagnostic method characterized by high sensitivity, specificity and predictive value. In order to obtain uniformed results of FNAC breast changes, the following categories are introduced: C1 (non-representative), C2 (benign), C3 (atypical), C4 (suspected) and C5 (malignant). The purpose of this study was to establish which pathological processes are most frequently diagnosed as C3 and C4 categories, which carry a malignant tumor risk. METHODS: The frequency of all cytological categories was determined in a retrospective analysis which included 1605 patients, all of whom had undergone FNAC of breast lesions, over a period of 5 years (2012-2016). Furthermore, histopathological diagnoses of 212 patients with cytological categories C3 (77) or C4 (135) were compared. RESULTS: In the sample of 1605 patients, 212 belonged to C3 or C4 cytological category ( frequency for C3 4.8%, for C4 8.4%). Also, in the group of patients with cytological categories C3 and C4 there were 208 women. The patients with C3 were younger than C4 patients. There was a statistically significant difference between the number of benign and malignant diagnoses in patients diagnosed with C3 or C4 cytological category (p<0.001). In C3 category, in 57.1% of the cases a benign condition was histopathologically diagnosed, while in C4 category, in 90.4% of the cases malignant tumor was histopathologically diagnosed. CONCLUSIONS: After histopathological analysis, C3 category in FNAC breast lesions is most commonly diagnosed as a fibrocystic breast disease or fibroadenoma, while C4 category is diagnosed as well-differentiated malignant tumor.

Introduction: The incidence of echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like4-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (EML4-ALK) mutation among surgically treated patients with adenocarcinoma of the lung of the Eastern European ethnicity is underreported. The aim of this trial was the determination of EML4-ALK mutation frequency in investigated population, and the evaluation of correlations between lung adenocarcinoma subtype and clinical characteristics with mutation status. Patients and methods: This was a prospective trial which included 195 patients with adenocarcinoma of the lung who underwent surgical treatment. ALK mutation screening was performed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). IHC scores of 2+ and 3+ were regarded as positive. Confirmatory FISH was performed in all IHC positive and in 2:1 ratio in negative patients. Results: Overall ALK mutation rate established by IHC was 6.2%, while FISH confirmed rate of 5.1%. The FISH confirmed ALK positivity in 7.6% Hungarians, 5.5% Serbians, and 6.6% Slovakians. Acinar subtype of adenocarcinoma of the lung was significantly (p=0.02) related to EML4-ALK positive mutation status. Most of the patients were males (56.9%), smokers (50.8%), or former smokers (28.7%) with acinar (55.4%) or solid (35.9%) adenocarcinoma of the lung. Sensitivity and specificity of IHC were 100% and 98.9% respectively. Conclusions: ALK mutation rate in surgically treated patients with adenocarcinoma of the lung was found to be 6.2% by IHC and 5.1% by FISH. Acinar subtype of the adenocarcinoma of the lung was significantly related to ALK positive mutation.

BACKGROUND: EBUS guided trans-bronchial biopsy became routine in diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPL). Suction catheter-biopsy is a technique for obtaining a tissue sample from peripheral lung parenchyma. Aim of this study was to evaluate diagnostic efficiency, feasibility and safety of EBUS guided suction catheter-biopsy (SCB) in comparison to trans-bronchial biopsy (TBB) in diagnosis of PPL. The main intention was to demonstrate non-inferiority of the technique over trans-bronchial biopsy, especially when used under navigation of the EBUS. METHODS: Radial EBUS probe (UM-3R, Olympus Co, Japan.) without guiding sheath was used to navigate suction catheter and TBB forceps to the PPL. The catheter was connected to the collection canister via vacuum pump. The SCB specimens were fixed with 10% buffered formalin. RESULTS: There were 168 patients enrolled in this study; 69.9% males and 30.1% females. Main lesion diameter was 4.1±1.9 cm. Majority of patients, 131(77.9%) were diagnosed with lung cancer. Per-biopsy calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) for EBUS-SCB were 92.4%, 100%, 100% and 67.7%, respectively. Corresponding values for EBUS-TBB were 92.3%, 100%, 100% and 69.7%. Only the size of the lesion significantly influenced (p=0.005) diagnostic performance. Complications occurred in 2 patients; one pneumothorax and one excessive bleeding. CONCLUSION: EBUS guided SCB is efficient, feasible and safe in diagnosis of peripheral lung cancer. The technique is complementary to trans-bronchial biopsy.

INTRODUCTION: Desquamative interstitial pneumonia is one of the rarest idiopathic interstitial pneumonias and the rarest form of smoking-related interstitial lung diseases. It was first described by Liebow in 1965. Histologically, it is characterized by the presence of eosinophilic macrophages uniformly filling airspaces which often contain a finely granular light-brown pigment that does not stain for hemosiderin. The alveolar walls are usually mildly thickened by fibrous tissue and infiltrated by a moderate number of lymphocytes. CASE OUTLINE: Our patient was a 56-year-old male, heavy smoker, with bilateral lung infiltrations of unknown etiology and several months of discomfort in the form of dry cough and shortness of breath. Lung function tests showed a moderate restrictive ventilation disorder and a severe reduction of diffusing capacity. Since bronchoscopic specimens did not reveal lung lesion etiology, an open lung biopsy of the lower left pulmonary lobe was performed, and based on the obtained surgical material the pathohistologically diagnosis of desquamative interstitial pneumonia was established. The patient was started on corticosteroid and immunosuppressive therapy, and he ceased smoking. At the last control examination, two years after the onset of symptoms, the patient was feeling well, and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan of the thorax showed regression of pathological changes. CONCLUSION: Although, as in our case, the majority of DIP patients improve on treatment, some patients still develop progressive irreversible fibrosis despite therapy.

INTRODUCTION: The malignant transformation of the branchial cysts epithelium is rare and it represents separate entity called branchiogenic carcinoma. CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old male with fluctuating mass localized on the right side of the neck, was admitted to the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, General hospital in Vrbas where cystic tumor 3 cm in its greatest dimension with friable, dark red wall below the front edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle was revealed. The wall of the tumor was composed of lymphoid tissue with germinal centers. The internal surface of the cyst was lined with thin layered squamous epithelium that showed a transition from the normal, followed by the atypical epithelium, and the in situ carcinoma to the part corresponding to a poor differentiated invasive squamous carcinoma. Following the diagnosis of suspected branchiogenic carcinoma a radical neck dissection was performed. No elements of the tumor had been found in the sampled materials taken from striated muscle tissue, salivary gland tissue and reactive lymph nodes (n = 24). The patient was presented to Oncology Consilium, and radiotherapy was implemented. CONCLUSION: The definitive diagnosis must be based on histological features. A five-year monitoring of the patient is necessary to rule out cervical metastasis of this tumor. It is necessary for a five-year follow-up to rule out cervical metastasis of the tumor.

Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) videobronchoscopy is a new technique for visualization of microvascular changes in bronchial mucosa. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate relation between vascular patterns visualized by NBI and histology of lung cancer. We prospectively evaluated 65 patients with suspected lung cancer scheduled for bronchoscopy. NBI followed conventional WL videobronchoscopy. After identification of endoscopically visible tumor, NBI was used to determine predominant type of pathological vascular pattern (dotted, tortuous, abrupt-ending blood vessels-Shibuya descriptors). All the lesions were biopsied and histologically confirmed. There were 81.5 % male and 18.5 % female patients evaluated in the study. Lung cancer was confirmed in all patients; 63.1 % were diagnosed with squamous cell lung cancer (SCC), 24.6 % had adenocarcinoma, 9.2 % had small-cell (SCLC) and 3.1 % large-cell lung cancer (LC). Dotted blood vessels were significantly (p < 0.000) associated with adenocarcinoma, identified in 68.4 % adenocarcinoma and 31.6 % SCC. Tortuous blood vessels were identified in 72 % SCC, 8 % adenocarcinoma, 12 % SCLC and 8 % of LC. Tortuous blood vessels were significantly (p < 0.000) associated with SCC. Abrupt-ending vessels were identified in 81 % SCC, 14.3 % SCLC and 4.8 % adenocarcinoma and were significantly associated (p < 0.000) with SCC. Dotted visual pattern of blood vessels identified during NBI videobronchoscopy is highly suggesting adenocarcinoma histology of lung cancer. Tortuous and abrupt-ending blood vessels visualized under NBI videobronchoscopy significantly suggest squamous cell histology of lung cancer. Large-scale studies should be designed in order to determine true relation between visual appearance and histology in lung cancer.

UNLABELLED: BACKROUND/AIM: The final diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma is made exclusively by histopathological examination of biopsy materials that are routinely complemented by the use of immunohistochemical analysis. The aim of this paper was to determine the significance of immunohistochemical analysis and application of certain antibodies in the diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included clinical data of 32 patients with the histopathological diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma made in the period 2004-2009 at the Institute for Pulmonary Diseases in Sremska Kamenica. The material was processed and analyzed at the Center for Pathology. RESULTS: CK5/6 was positive, in 63% of the cases calretinin, in 94% and HBME-1 in 80% of the cases. CK7 was positive in 78%, and EMA in 83% of the cases. All the cases (100%) were negative for TTFF-1, CEA, CD20, desmin and MOC31. CONCLUSION: Immunohistochemistry has become an essential diagnostic procedure for the diagnosis and determination of the type of malignant pleural mesothelioma, and due to the lack of individual antibodies a combination of antibody with different sensitivity and specificity is in use today.

INTRODUCTION: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an uncommon disease of unknown etiology characterized by uncontrolled proliferation and infiltration of various organs by Langerhans cells. CASE REPORT: We presented a 54-year-old man, heavy smoker, with dyspnea, cough, hemoptysis, headache and ataxia, who died shortly after admission to our hospital. On the autopsy, tumor was found in the posterior segment of the right upper pulmonary lobe as well as a right-sided occipitoparietal lesion which penetrated into the right ventricle resulting in internal and external hematocephalus. Histologically and immunohistohemically, the diagnosis of primary lung adenocarcinoma with brain metastasis was made (tumor cells showed positivity for CK7 and TTF-1 which confirmed the diagnosis). In the lung parenchyma around the tumor, as well as in brain tissue around the metastatic adenocarcinoma histiocytic lesions were found. Light microscopic examination of the other organs also showed histiocytic lesions involving the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, spleen and mediastinal lymph nodes. Immunohistochemical studies revealed CD68, S-100 and CD1a immunoreactivity within the histiocytes upon which the diagnosis of Langerhans' cells histiocytosis was made. CONCLUSION: The multisystem form of LCH with extensive organ involvement was an incidental finding, while metastatic lung adenocarcinoma to the brain that led to hematocephalus was the cause of death.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the thyroid gland has been used as an initial investigative procedure of thyroid nodule(s) in the Department of Pathology at the Institute of Oncology of Vojvodina for more than 20 years. This procedure is rapid, inexpensive and technologically simple, yet it has found only limited, albeit increasing acceptance in medical practice in Serbia. The aim of the study was to evaluate our FNAC findings by correlating cytological results with histological diagnosis and to define the sensitivity, diagnostic accuracy and positive predictive value of FNAC. METHODS: A total of 266 patients with thyroid swellings were aspirated in one year investigated period at our Institute out of whom 69 underwent surgery between May 2008 and May 2009. The cytological results correlated with clinical features, ultrasound investigations (US) and subsequent histopathological examination of the resected tissue. RESULTS: By the use of cytology we found out thyroid carcinoma in 10 patients, and by histopathological examination in 12. We obtained 83% sensitivity, 100% specificity and 97% of diagnostic accuracy of FNAC. CONCLUSION: The obtained results confirm the importance of FNAC in preoperative assesment of thyroid nodule.

Malignant mesothelioma is the most significant pleural tumour and it can be divided into three types: epithelial, sarcomatoid and biphasic mesothelioma. The most significant clinical manifestation of this tumour is pleural effusion. This paper was aimed at determining the role of cytological evaluation of pleural fluid in the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. This retrospective study included 33 medical records of patients with pleural malignant mesothelioma referred to the Institute for Lung Diseases of Vojvodina, in Sremska Kamenica in the period from 2004 to 2009. In 24 out of 33 patients, x-rays confirmed pleural effusion, thoracentesis was performed and specimens of effusion were cytologically examined at the Department of Pathology of the Institute for Lung Diseases of Vojvodina. Forty-nine cytological examinations were done. Only 2 of the first specimens were positive for malignant cells and 6 were suspicious. In repeated cytological examinations, 5 out of 6 initially suspicious specimens were positive for malignant cells, and the remaining 1 was negative. To sum up, 7 of 49 cytological examinations were positive and the sensitivity of our cytological study for the diagnosis of malignancy was 29%. Due to the low sensitivity of the cytological examinations, it has been recommended to perform biopsy of the pleura for definitive diagnosis in every patient with clinical symptoms and suspicious radiography.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cytokeratins (CK) 5/6 and 17, myoepithelial markers, are also expressed in a proportion of breast carcinomas. Breast carcinomas expressing basal epithelium cytokeratins constitute a tumor subgroup that shows common but heterogeneous morphological, genetical, and immunophenotypical features and is associated with poor clinical outcome. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of basal expression of cytokines CK5/6 and CK17 in the tested samples of ductal invasive breast cancers, as well as to test the presence of a correlation of tumor expression of basal cytokines and clinicopathological prognostic factors: age, the level of histological differentiation, hormone receptor status, HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) protein expresion and HER2 gene amplification in tumorous tissue. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to evaluate the CK5/6 and CK17 status of 121 ductal invasive breast cancers. The results thus obtained were compared with clinicopathological characteristics. RESULTS: From the 117 analyzed tumor specimens, 22% and 30% were immunohistochemically positive for CK5/6 and CK17, respectively. Basal cytokeratins showed significant inverse relationship with estrogen and progesterone receptor status and HER2 protein expression. CK5/6 and CK17 immunoreactivities were directly associated with triple-negative phenotype and higher histological grade. CONCLUSION: Our findings are similar to reports that tumours expression of basal cytokeratins are correlated with adverse pathological parameters. Given the limited number of emerging therapeutic targets in these tumors, routine IHC identification of basal-like subtype as a poor prognostic group of breast cancer could be based on the expression of basal CKs.

Both narrow band imaging (NBI) and autofluorescence imaging (AFI) are new techniques for the assessment of lung cancer. The major aim of this study was to investigate whether the combination of these two techniques improve sensitivity and specificity in the assessment of lung cancer extension. The study prospectively evaluated 118 patients with suspected lung cancer. All of the patients were examined using EVIS LUCERA SPECTRUM videobronchoscopy system. The narrow band imaging preceded autofluorescence imaging examination. In every patient, at least 1 but no more than 4 biopsies were taken from places visualized as pathologic, surrounding primary tumor, and at least 1 biopsy from places that appeared visually normal. Sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive value for autofluorescence imaging in the assessment of tumor extension were 89.2, 77.8, 87, and 81%, respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive value for narrow band imaging were 90.4, 82.4, 91.8, and 79.7%, respectively. Corresponding values for combination of techniques were 93.7, 86.9, 94.5, and 85.1%. Combination of techniques significantly improves sensitivity (P = 0.034) with borderline effect on specificity (P = 0.056) of autofluorescence imaging. There was no significant improvement for sensitivity and specificity of NBI alone. The combination of techniques shows significantly better sensitivity and specificity in the assessment of lung cancer extension when compared to white light videobronchoscopy alone, but improvement is not so convincing when compared to the each technique alone.

Today the role of pathologists is increasingly focused on finding more accurate prognostic and predictive parameters that will be necessary for targeted treatment of patients. Improving understanding of colorectal carcinogenesis allow us to consider incorporation of these new knowledges in molecular classification of colorectal cancer. There are different ways of molecular classification, but most of them are based on: 1. type of genetic instability; 2. methylator phenotype and 3. single molecular events such are KRAS and BRAF mutations. This review considers a new molecular classification of colorectal carcinoma proposed by J. Jass in 2007 which is based on the correlation of molecular and morphological features. We would also like to point out to the new role of pathologists in the era of personalized medicine in diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal carcinomas as well as in selection of patients for some modalities of targeted therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis (CNPA) is a cavitary, infectious process of lung parenchyma with slow progressive course. Vascular invasion and dissemination to other organs are unusual. CASE REPORT: We presented a 25-year old man with bilineal acute leukaemia who developed pulmonary and systemic symptoms. Chest CT showed nodular consolidations and cavitary lesions in both lungs. Bronchial biopsy revealed necrotic hyphae but it was negative for Aspergillus by culture. Serum was positive for antibodies to Aspergillus, but it was negative for antigens. A thoracoscopic lung biopsy of the upper left lobe revealed necrosis of lung tissue, with acute and chronic inflammation of the cavity wall and the presence of hyphae consistent with Aspergillus species. CONCLUSION: Although confirmation of the diagnosis is difficult, a combination of characteristic clinical, radiological and histological findings and either serological results positive for Aspergillus or the isolation of Aspergillus from respiratory samples are highly indicative of CNPA.

INTRODUCTION: Cavernous hemangiomas are benign vascular tumours rarely described in the lungs. Symptoms include respiratory distress, cardiac failure and massive haemoptysis, but they are mostly asymptomatic. CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old woman was referred to our institute and treated for pneumonia. A computed tomography scan of the thorax showed an infiltrative mass about 46mm in its greatest dimension in the right upper lobe. The mass was in contact with the mediastinal pleura. Since bronchial biopsy and FNAC did not reveal the aetiology of the lesion, the video-assisted thoracic surgery with right anterolateral thoracotomy and enucleation was performed. The intraoperative and postoperative pathohistological study showed cavernous hemangioma and this diagnosis was confirmed on immunohistochemical staining. CONCLUSION: In spite of its benign behaviour and mostly asymptomatic clinical course it is necessary to consider cavernous hemangioma in the differential diagnosis of other pulmonary lesions. The definitive diagnosis can be made only by histopathological and immunohistochemical examination.

OBJECTIVE: Autofluorescence imaging (AFI) videobronchoscopy is a new endoscopic tool that improves visualization of neoplastic changes in the bronchial mucosa. The major aim of our study was to determine sensitivity and specificity of the technique in the assessment of tumor extent (margins). The secondary objective was to evaluate the possible effect of AFI on the change in therapeutic decisions of lung cancer treatment. METHODS: In this prospective trial, we enrolled 104 patients in whom we performed 624 targeted biopsies, 3 from the pathologically altered mucosa (red-brownish or magenta colored) and 3 from randomly picked normal areas. We were using the Olympus BF-F260 videobronchoscope and EVIS LUCERA system. White light videobronchoscopy (WLB) preceded AFI examination and biopsy collection. All biopsy specimens were examined by a pathologist blinded to bronchoscopy findings, and where applicable surgically resected specimens were examined. RESULTS: In 14.4% of the patients, AFI revealed a greater extent of the tumor than WLB, and in 11.5% that finding led to change in therapeutic decision (lesser or greater resection or avoidance of surgery). We found a significant correlation between tumor extent determined by AFI and changes in therapeutic decisions (P < 0.01). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value for AFI in the assessment of tumor extension were 93%, 92%, 92% and 93%, respectively. Corresponding results for WLB were 84%, 79%, 77% and 85%, respectively. Relative sensitivity of AFI is 1.11. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm that AFI videobronchoscopy significantly improves the assessment of central lung cancer extension and influences the therapeutic strategy. This technique has greater sensitivity and specificity, in assessment of tumor margins, than WLB alone.
