RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The presentation of atrial fibrillation (AF) varies remarkably, from totally asymptomatic to symptomatic patients, while the same individual may present symptomatic and asymptomatic episodes. We aimed to identify electrocardiographic differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic episodes and to find parameters related to the appearance of symptoms. METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients (age 66.9±10years) with paroxysmal AF received an implantable loop recorder. Three types of episodes were defined: asymptomatic (ASx), symptomatic (Sx), and mixed asymptomatic-symptomatic (AS-Sx). The heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were recorded during the first 2min of each ASx or Sx episode, and during the first 2min of both the symptomatic and asymptomatic periods in AS-Sx. RESULTS: Eighty-two episodes from twenty-five patients were evaluated. Mean HR was 142.48±25.84bpm for Sx and 95.71±19.29bpm for ASx (p<0.001). Mean HRV was 92.62±42.29ms for Sx and 150.06±49.68ms for ASx (p<0.001). In AS-Sx, mean HR was 102.91±24.54bpm for the asymptomatic and 141.88±23.43bpm for the symptomatic period (p<0.001). Mean HRV was 173.55±61.30ms for the asymptomatic and 87.33±30.65ms for the symptomatic period (p=0.003). There were no significant correlations between patients' characteristics and the clinical presentation of the arrhythmia. CONCLUSIONS: The ASx were characterized by a lower HR and higher HRV compared to Sx. In As-Sx, the asymptomatic period was characterized by a lower HR and higher HRV compared to the symptomatic. These findings suggest a possible contribution of variations in the autonomic nervous system activity to the perception of the arrhythmia.

RESUMO

Introduction Angiolipoma is a histological variant of lipoma and is the most common neoplasm in the trunk and extremities of young adults. It is extremely rare in elderly people, and its size is ≤4cm. Few data are available for large angiolipomas. Case History An 86-year-old patient was admitted to our surgical department due to a large mass on his left arm, which was resected. The specimen measured 19.5 × 15 × 10.5cm. Histopathological examination revealed a benign non-infiltrating angiolipoma. This is the first report of a giant angiolipoma of the arm reported in an octogenarian patient. Conclusions Giant lipomas of the upper extremities are extremely rare. Resection is associated with cure in most patients, but regular follow-up should be considered.

RESUMO

In this work, we have synthesized multiwall nitrogenated carbon nanotubes (MW-NCNTs) with Fe-catalysts by the microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition process @950 degrees C and subsequently functionalized with chlorine and oxygen. The dia-magnetic behavioral M-H loop of non-functionalized MW-NCNTs were turn into ferromagnetic behaviors by the process of chlorination and oxidation respectively; which were characterized by means of superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer within the temperature range 5-300 K. A prominent cusp like behavior is also observed at around approximately 45 K in M(FC) and M(ZFC) measurements confirming the ferromagnetic behaviors of these MW-NCNTs after chlorination and oxidation.

RESUMO

We report the low-temperature growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at high growth rates by a photo-thermal chemical vapour deposition (PTCVD) technique using a Ti/Fe bilayer film as the catalyst. The bulk growth temperature of the substrate is as low as 370 °C and the growth rate is up to 1.3 µm min(-1), at least eight times faster than the values reported by traditional thermal CVD methods. Transmission electron microscopy observations reveal that as-grown CNTs are uniformly made of highly crystalline 5-6 graphene shells with an approximately 10 nm outer diameter and a 5-6 nm inner diameter. The low-temperature rapid growth of CNTs is strongly related to the unique top-down heating mode of PTCVD and the use of a Ti/Fe bimetallic solid solution catalyst. The present study will advance the development of CNTs as interconnects in nanoelectronics, through a CMOS-compatible low-temperature deposition method suitable for back-end-of-line processes.

RESUMO

In 1998, Orexin A was added to the long list of orexigenic neuropeptides of the brain's physiology. Orexin A is involved in the central control of appetite and in energy homeostasis, as well as in the regulation of many other physiological functions. It is produced by a small cluster of the brain's neurons, located mainly in and around the lateral hypothalamic area. This site is known to be involved in regulating feeding in mammals. An intracerebroventricular injection of Orexin A into the rat's brain causes an impressive increase in the consumption of food, while an intravenous injection induces changes on glucagon plasma concentrations in rats. In addition, there are signs of changes on glucagon plasma concentrations when Orexin A acts on individual pancreatic islets of rats. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of the central administration of porcine Orexin A on glucagon plasma concentrations in pigs, and examined whether these changes are associated with the possible effect of the neuropeptide on the enteroinsular axis.

RESUMO

Orexin A is a member of a wider family of orexigenic neuropeptides that have been recently discovered. They are produced by a small group of neurons located in the area of the brain, round the nucleus of the fornix (posterior hypothalamus), in the paraventricular nucleus, the dorsomedial nucleus, the ventromedial hypothalamus, as well as in the lateral hypothalamic region; these are sites that are known to be involved in regulating feeding in mammals. Orexin A is a neuropeptide, which is involved in appetite regulation and energy homeostasis. An intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of Orexin A in the brain of rats causes an impressive increase in food consumption. In addition, a subcutaneous or intravenous (IV) injection of Orexin A produces changes on insulin plasma concentrations in rats. Recent research suggests that Orexin A is also involved in regulating many other physiological functions. In this study, we examined the potential effects of the central administration of porcine Orexin A on insulin plasma concentrations in pigs, and whether these changes are connected with the possible effect of the neuropeptide on the enteroinsular axis.

RESUMO

X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) were used to elucidate the electronic and mechanical properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films deposited by the plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition method at various bias voltages (V(b)) using a C(2)H(2) vapour precursor in an Ar(+) atmosphere. The increase of V(b) is found to increase and decrease the contents of sp(3)- and sp(2)-bonded carbon atoms, respectively, i.e. the films become more diamond-like. The Young's modulus measurements show increases with the increase of the presence of sp(3)-bonded carbon atoms in the structure of the DLC films.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Large bowel obstruction is occasionally the mode of presentation of advanced colorectal or pelvic malignancies, and a prognostic of poor survival. The choices of treatment range from palliative tube decompression to curative or palliative surgery. METHODS: Twelve out of 500 women with various malignancies and symptomatology of large bowel obstruction were studied. All patients required urgent exploratory laparotomies. RESULTS: The primary site was established intra-operatively to be the colon (2 cases), stomach (2 cases) and ovaries (2 cases). In the remaining 6 cases there was uncertainty about the origin of primary disease. Routine histology and immuno-histochemistry of the specimens revealed the origin of primary malignancy in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: Meticulous histological examination is essential for the establishment of correct diagnosis and selection of the best available treatment in women with pelvic malignancies, presenting with acute bowel obstruction.

RESUMO

Diffractive optics fabrication is performed by two complementary processing methods that rely on the photoablation of materials by ultrashort UV laser pulses. The spatially selective ablation of materials permits the direct microetching of high-quality surface-relief patterns. In addition, the direct, spatially selective transfer of the ablated material onto planar and nonplanar receiving substrates provides a complementary microprinting operation. The radiation from the ultrashort pulsed excimer laser results in superior quality at relatively low-energy density levels, owing to the short absorption length and minimal thermal-diffusion effects. Computer-generated holographic structures are produced by both modes of operation. Submicrometer features, including Bragg-type structures, are microprinted onto planar and high-curvature optical-fiber surfaces, demonstrating the unique ability of the schemes for complex microstructure and potentially nanostructure development.

RESUMO

In a series of patients with advanced cataract and in another one of patients with incipient cataract, aged under 55 years, with no history of trauma or diabetes and a normal fasting blood sugar, the standard glycose tolerance test, as well as the HbA1 determination were performed. About 34% of the patients of the first group and 10% of the second group showed abnormalities of the tests. Asymptomatic diabetes was diagnosed in these patients and it is concluded that glycose intolerance is common in patients with advanced or incipient cataract, under 55 years of age, who show no glycosuria and have a normal fasting blood sugar on routine examination.
