BACKGROUND: A new Liobagrus fish was reported from the Korean Peninsula, but research on this taxon is lacking. Moreover, existing research on the mitogenome of the genus Liobagrus in Korea is very limited, and no studies have been conducted on structural characteristics of transfer RNA (tRNA) or gene order comparisons between taxa; instead, research has been restricted to basic phylogeny. OBJECTIVE: The complete mitochondrial genome of Liobagrus geumgangensis was analyzed for the first time. We then aimed to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of the genus Liobagrus and estimate the divergence time of speciation events. METHODS: We used a dissected fin clip from an adult of Liobagrus geumgangensis. Genomic DNA was extracted and analyzed with whole genome sequencing (WGS) and assembled by the NOVOPlasty method. The mitogenome sequence was annotated, and a genome map, tRNA structure, and phylogenetic tree were constructed using maximum likelihood analysis. In addition, divergence time was estimated. RESULTS: The mitochondrial genome was 16,522 bp in length and comprised 37 genes. The overall base composition was 30.5% A, 25.5% T, 28.4% C, and 15.7% G. Most tRNAs exhibited the typical clover leaf shape, except trnS1. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Liobagrus geumgangensis clustered within a clade with four other Liobagrus species exclusive to the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. Its divergence was estimated to have occurred during the late Miocene. CONCLUSION: Characteristics of Liobagrus geumgangensis mitogenome were consistent with those of other torrent catfish species. Time scale estimation revealed distinct groupings, with some distributed across mainland Asia and others in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. Notably, the Korean Peninsula group was identified as its own lineage, comprising entirely endemic species.

In a recent survey of populations of the Korean torrent catfish Liobagrus, a distinctive species was discovered from the Geum River and its tributaries flowing into the western coast of Korea, and here described as a new species, L.geumgangensissp. nov. It is distinguishable from other congeners by a combination of the following characters: I, 8 pectoral fin-rays; 52-56 caudal-fin rays; a relatively short occiput to dorsal-fin origin distance (6.9-9.8% SL); a short pelvic-fin insertion to anal-fin origin distance (11.9-17.3% SL); a long dorsal-fin base (10.6-13.5% SL); 8-9 gill rakers; 5-8 serrations on the pectoral fin; the body and fins are dark yellow, the margins of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are dark brown, but the outermost rim is faintly yellow. Analysis of the cytb gene also confirmed that L.geumgangensis is a monophyletic lineage distinct from other congeners.

Rational designing of electrode materials is of great interest for improving the performance of battery-type supercapacitors. The bimetallic NiCo2S4 (NCS) and CoNi2S4 (CNS) electrode materials have received much attention for supercapacitors due to their rich electrochemical characteristics. However, the comparative electrochemical performances of NCS and CNS electrodes were never studied for supercapacitor application. In this work, microsphere-like bimetallic NCS and CNS structures were synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method by controlling the molar ratio of Ni and Co precursors. The physico-chemical results confirmed that microsphere-like structures with cubic spinel-type NCS and CNS materials were successfully fabricated by this method. When tested as the supercapacitor electrode materials, both NCS and CNS electrodes exhibited battery-type behavior in a three-electrode configuration with outstanding electrochemical performances such as specific capacity, rate performance and cycle stability. Impressively, the CNS electrode delivered a high specific capacity of 430.1 C g-1 at 1 A g-1, which is higher than 345.9 C g-1 of the NCS electrode. Furthermore, the NCS and CNS electrodes showed a decent cycling stability with 75.70 and 84.70% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. Benefiting from the electrochemical advantage of CNS microspheres, we fabricated a hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device based on CNS microspheres (positive electrode) and activated carbon (AC, negative electrode), which is named as CNS//AC. The assembled CNS//AC HSC device showed a large energy density of 41.98 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 800.04 W kg-1 and displayed a remarkable cycling stability with a capacity retention of 91.79% after 15,000 cycles. These excellent electrochemical performances demonstrate that both bimetallic NCS and CNS microspheres may provide potential electrode materials for high performance battery-type supercapacitors.

Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) is one of the etiological agents of Theiler's disease, causing fulminant hepatitis; however, its transmission route and pathogenesis remain unclear. In the present study, we aimed to determine EqPV-H shedding in oral/nasal/vaginal swabs or semen samples from horses living in Korea using nested polymerase chain reaction. We then used the data obtained to investigate various risk factors associated with EqPV-H including viral shedding, hepatopathological changes, and genetic diversity. Our data revealed occurrence of EqPV-H shedding in these animals (oral: 3/102 [2.9%]; nasal: 3/102 [2.9%]; semen: 1/9 [11.1%]) and identified that both age and country of foaling were significantly associated with EqPV-H shedding (p < .05). In addition, we noted that one of the newly isolated strains clustered separately from the other strains in the phylogenetic tree, revealing unique nucleotide and amino acid substitutions. This is a field surveillance study providing evidence of natural and venereal shedding of EqPV-H and describing its presence in both oral/nasal fluids and semen. This epidemiological and clinical analysis may help specify the clinicopathological features of EqPV-H and facilitate the development of novel disease prevention strategies.

Equine adenovirus 1 (EAdV-1) can cause upper respiratory disease in horses and has been reported worldwide. In this study, and for the first time in Korea, the prevalence of EAdV-1 in equine nasal swabs was investigated using a PCR to identify potential risk factors and examine the genetic diversity of its DNA sequences by a comparison with foreign strains. Nasal swabs collected from 359 horses reared at Korea Racing Authority facilities were tested using an EAdV-1 hexon-specific PCR and the associations between EAdV-1 infection and sex, age, region, breed, and activity were analyzed. Five samples (1.4%, 5/359) tested positive for EAdV-1; however, no statistically significant differences were observed with respect to any variable. Among the five EAdV-1-positive horses, a co-infection with equine influenza, equine herpesvirus 1 and 4, or Streptococcus equi was not detected; however, clinical respiratory signs were observed in one. Phylogenetic analyses based on partial EAdV-1 hexon gene sequences revealed that the Korean EAdV-1 isolates shared approximately 98.8-100% similarity among each other and with foreign strains. Three Korean isolates shared high similarity with strains from Australia and India and the remaining two isolates were separate in phylogenetic analyses. These findings highlight the molecular prevalence and genetic diversity of EAdV-1 in horses in Korea.

Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) is a newly identified etiologic agent of Theiler's disease (TD). We present a case of EqPV-H-related fulminant hepatitis in a 14-year-old thoroughbred mare in Korea. The mare had acute hepatopathy and gastrointestinal symptoms, with abnormal liver-related blood parameters. The horse was born in the USA and imported to Korea in 2017, with no history of administration of equine biological products after entry into Korea. The horse was diagnosed with EqPV-H-associated hepatitis after abdominal ultrasonography, laparotomy, and nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in situ hybridization (ISH) assays. The serum, nasal swab, oral swab, and liver biopsy were positive for EqPV-H according to the PCR assay. Genetic analysis of the partial NS1 gene of EqPV-H showed a unique nucleotide substitution, distinct from that in previously deposited strains. EqPV-H DNA was found not only in hepatocytes but also in bile duct epithelium and Kupffer cells, particularly via ISH. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of EqPV-H-associated TD in Asia, providing the first clinical evidence for viral shedding from the mouth and nose, and identification of EqPV-H in the liver. This study contributes to a better understanding of the pathological features of EqPV-H-associated TD.

The olfactory anatomy and histology of Lethenteron reissneri were researched using a stereo microscope, a light microscope, and a scanning electron microscope. As in other lampreys, it shows same characters as follows: i) a single olfactory organ, ii) a single tubular nostril, iii) a single olfactory chamber with gourd-like form, iv) a nasal valve, v) a nasopharyngeal pouch, vi) a sensory epithelium (SE) of continuous distribution, vii) a supporting cells with numerous long cilia, viii) an accessory olfactory organ. However, the description of a pseudostratified columnar layer in the SE and Non SE is a first record, not reported in sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus. In particular, both 19 to 20 lamellae in number and olfactory receptor neuron's quarter ciliary length of the knob diameter differ from those of P. marinus. From these results, it might be considered that the olfactory organ of L. reissneri shows well adaptive structure of a primitive fish to slow flowing water with gravel, pebbles, and sand and a hiding habit into sand bottom at daytime. The lamellar number and neuron's ciliary length may be a meaningful taxonomic character for the class Petromyzonida.

RESUMO

A new species of torrent catfish, Liobargus hyeongsanensis, is described from rivers and tributaries of the southeastern coast of Korea. The new species can be differentiated from its congeners by the following characteristics: a small size with a maximum standard length (SL) of 90 mm; body and fins entirely brownish-yellow without distinct markings; a relatively short pectoral spine (3.7-6.5 % SL); a reduced body-width at pectoral-fin base (15.5-17.9 % SL); 50-54 caudal-fin rays; 6-8 gill rakers; 2-3 (mostly 3) serrations on pectoral fin; 60-110 eggs per gravid female.

Fifteen Korean cobitid species were investigated by the light and electron microscope to clarify the structure on the egg envelope of the oocyte. The egg envelope (zona radiata) consists of two layers: 1) zona radiata externa which is the site for attachment of various adhesive materials, and 2) zona radiata interna which consists of heterogeneous electron-dense multi layers. The external appearances ofthe egg envelope could be classified into seven types as follow: 1) granule (Cobitis sinensis, C. lutheri, C. tetralineata and Iksookimia yongdokensis), 2) villi (C. pacifica, I. koreensis, I. pumila, I. hugowolfeldi and Niwaella multifasciata), 3) papilla (I. longicorpa). 4) grapevine (I. choii), 5) hillock (Kichulchoia brevifasciata), 6) sawtooth-like form (Koreocobitis naktongensis) and 7) unadorned form (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, M. mizolepis).
