RESUMO

[Purpose] The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of strength training using a sliding rehabilitation machine (SRM) on the gait function of cerebral palsy children. [Subjects and Methods] Thirteen children aged 6-18 years participated in the SRM training for 8 weeks (30 min/day, 2 times/week). The SRM is designed for the performance of a closed-kinetic chain exercise in which a tilt table is moved up and down using wheels on the table. Participants began in a position of flexion of the 3 lower joints (hips, knees, and ankles) on the SRM. In each exercise session, they extended and flexed the 3 joints. The level of exercise was set by changing the inclination of the tilt table. Functional gait ability was measured with the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), 10-m walk test (10MWT), and timed up-and-go test (TUG) before and after the training. Muscle strength was also measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. [Results] Nine of the thirteen children completed the entire study. The peak torques of the knee extensor and flexor group muscles significantly improved after training with the SRM. The total distance of the 6 MWT significantly increased after training. The times of the 10 MWT and the TUG significantly improved after training. The changes in muscle tone were also investigated using the MAS (Modified Ashworth Scale) and Tardieu scale, but no significant changes were found in muscle tone between the pre- and post-test measurements. [Conclusion] The findings demonstrate the effect of the SRM intervention which resulted in improved muscle strength and functional gait.

RESUMO

[Purpose] This study examined whether the alpha rhythm sleep alters the EEG activity and response time in the attention and concentration tasks. [Subjects and Methods] The participants were 30 healthy university students, who were randomly and equally divided into two groups, the experimental and control groups. They were treated using the Happy-sleep device or a sham device, respectively. All participants had a one-week training period. Before and after training sessions, a behavioral task test was performed and EEG alpha waves were measured to confirm the effectiveness of training on cognitive function. [Results] In terms of the behavioral task test, reaction time (RT) variations in the experimental group were significantly larger than in the control group for the attention item. Changes in the EEG alpha power in the experimental group were also significantly larger than those of the control group. [Conclusions] These findings suggest that sleep induced using the Happy-sleep device modestly enhances the ability to pay attention and focus during academic learning.

RESUMO

We report a case of surgical treatment for Hallermann-Streiff syndrome in a patient with ocular manifestations of esotropia, entropion, and blepharoptosis. A 54-year-old man visited Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital complaining of ocular discomfort due to cilia touching the corneas of both eyes for several years. He had a bird-like face, pinched nose, hypotrichosis of the scalp, mandibular hypoplasia with forward displacement of the temporomandibular joints, a small mouth, and proportional short stature. His ophthalmic features included sparse eyelashes and eyebrows, microphthalmia, nystagmus, lower lid entropion in the right eye, and upper lid entropion with blepharoptosis in both eyes. There was esodeviation of the eyeball of more than 100 prism diopters at near and distance, and there were limitations in ocular movement on lateral gaze. The capsulopalpebral fascia was repaired to treat the right lower lid entropion, but an additional Quickert suture was required to prevent recurrence. Blepharoplasty and levator palpebrae repair were performed for blepharoptosis and dermatochalasis. Three months after lid surgery, the right medial rectus muscle was recessed 7.5 mm, the left medial rectus was recessed 7.25 mm, and the left lateral rectus muscle was resected 8.0 mm.

RESUMO

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are highly conserved proteins playing a protective role under deleterious conditions caused by a wide variety of pathophysiological, including environmental stresses. Glutathione (GSH) is known to play a critical role in the cellular defense against unregulated oxidative stress in mammalian cells including neurons. We previously demonstrated that GSH depletion induced cell death in the retina, but the mechanism(s) of cellular protection were not clear. Unregulated oxidative stress was induced by depletion of intracellular GSH by systematic administration of buthionine sulphoximine (BSO), an inhibitor of gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase. After 0, 1, 4 and 7 days of BSO administration, we examined expression of both large and small HSP mRNAs (hsp90alpha, hsp90beta, hsp70, hsp60 and hsp25) in oxidative-stressed mouse retina. Of large HSPs, only hsp70 expression was significantly decreased from 1 day after BSO injection, whereas expression of other large hsps was not changed on day 1. Expression of hsp60 decreased on 4 days, whereas expression of hsp90 decreased on 7 days after BSO administration. Different from large HSPs, a small HSP, hsp25 increased its expression to a great extent from 1 day after BSO administration. Taken together, our results show that unregulated oxidative stress could induce differential expression of HSPs, which, in turn, may play distinct roles in the cellular defense. Targeting HSPs, therefore, may provide novel tools for treatment of retinal degenerative diseases such as glaucoma, retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a rare disease showing characteristic facial appearance, developmental delay, growth retardation, low birth weight, skeletal formation anomaly, hirsutism and various ophthalmologic problems. METHODS: We experienced a case of an 18-year-old female with Cornelia de Lange syndrome showing superficial keratitis with entropion, ptosis, high myopia, lacrimal cutaneous fistula and characteristic facial appearance. She was born with low birth weight, operated for cleft palate and diagnosed with ventricular septal defect. In addition, she showed psychological lag and developmental impairment. RESULTS: We performed entropion correction surgery, administered medical therapy for superficial keratitis and prescribed glasses for her myopia. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first case report on the successful correction of entropion with Cornelia de Lange syndrome in Korea.

RESUMO

Low-level liquid borate wastes have been immobilized with paraffin wax using a concentrate waste drying system (CWDS) in Korean nuclear power plants. The possibility for improving chemical durability of paraffin waste form was suggested in this study. A small amount of low density polyethylene (LDPE) was added to increase the leaching resistance of the existing paraffin waste form. The influence of LDPE on the leaching behavior of waste form was investigated by performing leaching test according to ANSI/ANS-16.1 procedure during 325 days. It was observed that the leaching of nuclides immobilized within paraffin waste form made a marked reduction although little content of LDPE was added to waste form. The acceptance criteria of paraffin waste form associated with leachability index (LI) and compressive strength after the leaching test were fully satisfied with the help of LDPE.

RESUMO

The leach test of radionuclide in cement-solidified waste form was performed. After leach test, compressive strength of waste form was measured. Cement-solidified waste form produced at Korean nuclear power plant, Kori (PWR) was chosen for the leach test. Specimens were cored out from a full-scale waste form (2001 drum size). The leach test procedure used for this study was ANSI/ANS 16.1 procedure. The leach ability indexes for cesium and cobalt isotopes were determined. Semi-infinite model was used for analysis of the controlling mechanism in the release of isotopes. Release mechanism of cesium was dominated by diffusion but release of cobalt behaved somewhat differently from the diffusion controlled release. Averaged leachability indexes were 8.6 for cesium and 11.4 for cobalt. Compressive strength after leach/ immersion test was 7.34 MPa for the sample immersed in simulated seawater and 8.34MPa for the sample immersed in deionized water.
