RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to translate the Perinatal Infant Care Social Support (PICSS) instrument into Chinese and to verify the reliability and validity of the translated version. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional design to examine the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the PICSS (C-PICSS). A cohort of 150 first-time mothers in China participated, attending hospital follow-up care at 6 weeks postpartum. Data were collected after obtaining informed consent from the mothers. RESULTS: The majority of mothers were aged between 20 and 29 years, with a mean age of 26.25 (±3.90) years. An item analysis of the 19 items in the C-PICSS showed that all items had an item-total score correlation above 0.2. This resulted in a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of 0.92 and a significant Bartlett's test of sphericity (χ2=1,778.65, p<.001), confirming the suitability of the data for factor analysis. Correlation analyses revealed a strong positive relationship between infant care social support and general social support (r=.62, p<.001), and a negative relationship between infant care social support and postpartum depression (r=-.38, p<.001). Higher scores for infant care social support were associated with reporting positive relationships with their husbands (t=3.72, p<.001) and high levels of spousal involvement (t=4.09, p<.001). In terms of structural support, spouses were identified as the primary source. CONCLUSION: The research results indicate that C-PICSS is reliable and valid as an indicator of social support for infant care among Chinese mothers.

Hydrogen fuel, which is essential for the hydrogen economy, including hydrogen cell vehicles, must be of high quality for optimal hydrogen cell use. Currently, hydrogen fuel quality control is mainly done by offline analysis with periodic sampling. However, with the anticipated surge in hydrogen charging stations, there's a pressing need for cost-effective, high-throughput online analysis systems. Additionally, the miniaturization of these analytical instruments for field application is also a challenge. In this study, we present a compact, real-time hydrogen fuel analyzer based on gas chromatography with a pulsed discharge helium ionization detector. Its dual-column system efficiently analyzes major impurities in hydrogen fuel in less than 30 min. Indicator species (CO, CO2, CH4, O2, N2, and additional hydrogen sulfide [H2S]) are determined by examining hydrogen production and supply processes. The analyzer's measurement capability is consistent with µmol/mol-level analysis, providing valuable real-time information for hydrogen infrastructure managers. Additionally, it can analyze H2S, a crucial marker of sulfur compounds acting as catalytic poisons in fuel cells. This real-time analyzer offers efficient, informed decision-making support for hydrogen infrastructure managers, enhancing the overall reliability of hydrogen fuel in fuel-cell electric vehicles.

In Morocco, there are challenges in the management of high-risk tuberculosis (TB) patients, including paper-based management and a shortage of healthcare workers related to TB. Additionally, TB management has not been accounted for in various patient types, which affects treatment adherence. This study aims to examine the delivery model of TB management and the outcomes of an integrated patient management system that uses a patient-centered and community-based approach, along with mobile health technology. A total of 3605 TB patients were enrolled in this program in Morocco's five prefectures (Rabat, Salé, Kénitra, Khemisset, Skhirat-Témara) from January 2018 to December 2019. Patients were managed based on demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, areas (rural or urban), health literacy levels, and distance to primary health centers. Our mobile health intervention "smart pillbox" was interposed with high-risk TB patients, along with patient education. The rate of successful treatment was 92.2%, which was higher than the national rate (88%). The "lost to follow-up" rate was 4.1%, which was significantly lower than the existing non-adherence rate of 7.9%. Therefore, integrated patient management for TB patients in Morocco is more effective than the existing conventional programs. This comprehensive approach provides an alternative method for countries with limited resources.

RESUMO

To enhance the skin whitening effect, tyrosinase activity and melanin biosynthesis needs to be suppressed in the skin. To achieve this goal, we examined the extract of Thymus quinquecostatus flowers, and identified a functional ingredient, galuteolin. Galuteolin effectively inhibited melanin biosynthesis in B16/F10 cells, partially suppressing tyrosinase activity. Therefore, this study suggests that galuteolin can be used as a cosmetic ingredient for skin whitening.

Pyrene, imidazole and dibenzofuran were used to synthesize new blue emitters of 1-(4-(dibenzo[b,d]furan-4-yl)phenyl)-2-(pyren-1-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (BFP-PI) and 1-(4-(dibenzo[b,d]furan-4-yl)phenyl)-4,5-diphenyl-2-(pyren-1-yl)-1H-imidazole (BFP-DPI). In the film state, BFP-PI and BFP-DPI show photoluminescence (PL) maximum values of 462 nm and 459 nm. The relative PL quantum efficiency (PLQY) of BFP-PI and BFP-DPI is 89.16% and 79.2% by using reference compound of 9,10-diphenylanthracene. The device using BFP-PI in the non-doped state as emitting material showed current efficiency (C.E.) of 3 cd/A and external quantum efficiency (E.Q.E.) of 2.15%, and the device using BFP-DPI as emitting material exhibited C.E. of 2.64 cd/A and E.Q.E. of 1.6%.

Pyrene, imidazole and dibenzothiophene were used to synthesize new blue emitters of 1-(4-Dibenzothiophen-2-yl-phenyl)-4,5-diphenyl-2-pyren-1-yl-1H-imidazole (DDPI) and 1-(3-Dibenzothiophen-4-yl-phenyl)-2-pyren-1-yl-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (DPPI). The optical properties of synthesized compounds were measured by UV-visible absorption and PL spectra. In the vacuum deposited film state, the PL maximum value is 463 nm for DDPI and 455, 471 nm for DPPI. The device using DDPI as emitting material showed CE of 2.38 cd/A, PE of 1.38 lm/W, and EQE of 1.54%, device using DPPI as emitting material exhibited CE of 3.65 cd/A, PE of 2.31 lm/W, and EQE of 3.07%. Also, OLED devices of DDPI and DPPI devices exhibited CIE coordinate of (0.20, 0.23) and (0.16, 0.16).

New three emitting compounds, AK-1, AK-2 and AK-3 including diazocine moiety were synthesized through Suzuki-coupling reaction. Physical properties such as optical, electroluminescent properties were investigated. UV-visible spectrum of AK-1, AK-2 and AK-3 in film state showed maximum 392, 393 and 401 nm. PL spectrum of AK-1, AK-2 and AK-3 showed maximum emission wavelength of 472, 473 and 435 nm. Three compounds were used as EML in OLED device: ITO/2-TNATA (60 nm)/NPB (15 nm)/EML (35 nm)/Alq3 (20 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (200 nm). AK-3 OLED device showed C.I.E value of (0.18, 0.26) and luminance efficiency of 0.51 cd/A at 10 mA/cm2. New derivatives including diazocine moiety were introduced as OLED emitting material and the EL efficiency was increased by the proper combination of core and side group.

AK-1NA and AK-2NA based on dibenzo-diazocine and anthracene moieties were designed and synthesized. Normalized UV-visible spectra of AK-1NA and AK-2NA in film state showed maximum absorption wavelength of 394 and 393 nm. PL spectra of AK-1NA and AK-2NA showed maximum emission wavelength of 429 and 444 nm. At a current density of 10 mA/cm2, OLED devices of AK-1NA and AK-2NA exhibited luminance efficiency of 2.39 and 1.50 cd/A, power efficiency of 1.01 and 0.81 lm/W. Also, OLED devices of AK-1NA and AK-2NA devices exhibited CIE(x, y ) of (0.16, 0.22) and (0.23, 0.42).

BACKGROUND: The effects of preanalytical variables in tissue processing and storage periods on RNA quality of tissues have been well documented in each type of cancer. However, few studies have been performed on a comparative assessment of the impacts across different cancer tissues, even though it is well known that RNase activity is highly variable in various tissue types and RNase-rich tissues have been found to yield low-quality RNA. METHODS: We investigated the impacts of cold ischemia times and long-term storage on RNA integrity in various types of cancer tissue, which had been fresh-frozen and collected at the Samsung Medical Center Biobank. RNA quality was also evaluated with regard to histopathological variables. We analyzed RNA integrity number (RIN) data, which had been obtained from our quality control (QC) processes over the last 7 years. Approximately 2% of samples were randomly selected and processed to measure RIN quarterly and after 6 years of storage for QC purposes. RESULTS: Fresh-frozen tumor tissues yielded high-quality RNA regardless of tumor type and histopathological features. Up to 1-hour cold ischemia times and up to 6-year storage times did not adversely influence RNA integrity. Only 3 samples showed RIN of <7 out of a total of 396 analyzed tumor tissues. CONCLUSIONS: Tissue quality was not adversely affected by long-term storage or limited variations of cold ischemia times. The low-quality samples could be correlated with the structural composition or intratumoral heterogeneity of tissues. The strict application of standardized protocols for tissue collection is the key for high-quality biobanking.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that unaddressed delays in clinical trial operation could severely compromise the overall effort invested, there seems to be a lack of concerted effort in reforming such delays. This study evaluated the composite effect of initiatives in reforming trial operation efficiency. METHODS: A high-volume academic medical center in Korea has implemented various initiatives to improve the trial operation efficiency by expediting times from institutional review board (IRB) submission to approval, from IRB submission to trial open for subject enrollment, and from trial open to first patient-in. The initiatives include implementation of the protocol preliminary review, parallel processing of the clinical trial agreement review in line with the protocol submission to the IRB, and involvement of project manager for operational risk management. Times from IRB submission to approval, from IRB submission to trial open, and from trial open to first patient-in before and after implementation of initiatives were compared. RESULTS: The median time required in IRB approval was meaningfully shorter in the postinitiative group (19 vs 14 days; P < .001). The median times from IRB submission to trial open for subject enrollment and from trial open to first patient-in were reduced significantly in the postinitiative group (trial open: 25 vs 18 days, P < .001; first patient-in: 111.5 vs 100 days, P = .014). CONCLUSIONS: The initiatives were effective in reforming trial operational efficiency. Additional studies to address the cause of operational delay and modifiable factors influencing subject enrollment are needed to further improve operational efficiency.

Delays in trial opening should be considered critical for the sake of not only the sponsor but the patients, as they may result in inequities of care. The Asan Medical Center, in Seoul, Korea, implemented a trial activation initiative in July 2012, in an aim to expedite the trial initiation timeline. Time intervals between trial initiation steps and the rate of institutional review board (IRB) and clinical trial agreement (CTA) parallel submission were assessed. A higher rate of parallel IRB and CTA submissions was observed after initiative implementation (25.5% vs 52.3%; P < .001). Initiative applications were shown to significantly accelerate the median trial opening time, from 114 to 81 days ( P < .001). Strategic processing of parallel submissions greatly shortened the median time required for trial initiation from 117 to 61 days compared with sequential submissions ( P < .001). A trial activation initiative including parallel IRB and CTA submissions is an effective tool for accelerating trial commencements.

Polycalcium is a mixture of Polycan and calcium lactate-gluconate 1:9 (w/w) with demonstrated antiosteoporosis activity in vitro and in vivo studies. These studies were a 4-week open-label, single-center trial to evaluate the efficacy of oral Polycalcium on bone metabolism and safety. In total, 30 healthy women (range 40-60 years) were administered 400 mg of Polycalcium for 4 weeks. The primary efficacy parameter was urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPYR) levels, and serum osteocalcin (OSC), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), urinary cross-linked C-telopeptide of type-1 collagen (CTx), urinary cross-linked N-telopeptide of type-1 collagen (NTx), calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P) levels, which were evaluated for comparison before and after administration of Polycalcium. After 4 weeks of Polycalcium administration, 27 subjects completed the test plan. Three subjects withdrew their consent to participate. The values of blood OSC, BALP, serum Ca, and serum P from baseline to 4 weeks of treatment were changed by -28.44%, 14.37%, 6.11%, and 1.42%, respectively. Biomarkers of bone resorption: urinary DPYR, serum CTx, serum NTx, urinary Ca, and urinary P, at baseline after 4 weeks of treatment were changed by -13.40%, 6.67%, -5.13%, -22.43%, and -3.04%, respectively. Additionally, when considering the subjects' adverse effects and the results of the blood and urine tests over the 4-week trial period, the dose of 400 mg Polycalcium showed efficacy for improving bone metabolism and was well tolerated and safe. Polycalcium was apparently safe and efficacious.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to determine lead (Pb) concentration in soil and tailing samples collected from a historical mining and smelting area. The Pb emission line at 405.781 nm was found to have the strongest intensity and highest linearity with concentration. It was further normalized by the Al emission line (394.401 nm), and a relationship between the peak area ratio (Pb/Al) and Pb concentration was established to determine Pb concentration of unknown samples. The Pb concentration was the highest at the former smelter site and unremediated mine-tailing areas, indicating that severe Pb contamination is still occurring. The Pb concentration decreased with increasing distance from the two major source areas (smelting and mine-tailing sites), although all samples exceeded the 400 mg/kg standard set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The limit of detection (LOD) for Pb was found to be 48 mg/kg, and the Pb concentrations determined by LIBS were in reasonable agreement with concentrations obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS; within 26%). When Pb concentrations were determined by calibration-free (CF)-LIBS, which does not require standard soil samples and dilution, both LIBS and ICP-MS were also in good agreement, suggesting that the CF-LIBS method can be used to determine Pb concentrations in highly contaminated soil samples. In addition to Pb, other metal emission lines from LIBS spectra were used to classify soil samples among the sites using a principal component analysis (PCA) method, showing a distinct difference in metal distribution between sites that are heavily contaminated by two major sources.

The effect of Cordyceps militaris culture broth (CMB) on melanogenesis in B16F0 melanoma cells was evaluated by measurement of the melanin concentration after 3 days of incubation. The B16F0 melanoma cells were treated with various concentrations of CMB 10-100 µg/mL and arbutin of 200 µM. Phenolic content and antioxidant activity of CMB were also measured. Phenolic content of CMB was 3.28 mg/g. The DPPH radical scavenging and ferric ion donating activities were 79.64% and 0.16, respectively. The melanin concentration and cell viability of melanoma cells by arbutin treatment decreased to 43% and 91% of the control, respectively. The CMB treatment showed a significant inhibitory effect of melanin production by 29%, 50%, and 56% at 50, 80, and 100 µg/mL concentration treatment, respectively, while over 90% of cells were viable. The CMB treatment at 50, 80, and 100 µg/mL concentrations in cultivation decreased extracellular melanin release induced by 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) treatment by 19%, 38%, and 48%, respectively. The CMB showed inhibitory activity against intracellular tyrosinase extracted from melanoma cells, while it had no inhibition on the activity of mushroom tyrosinase. The cellular glutathione contents were enhanced by CMB treatment in a concentration-dependent manner. These results suggested that CMB suppressed cellular tyrosinase activity and total melanin content in cultured B16F0 melanoma cells without any significant effects on cell proliferation and it might be candidate anti-melanogenic agent.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) was shown to be elevated in the acute phase of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and to have prognostic significance in AMI patients. The aim of this study was to estimate whether the value of PTX3 could be used as a prognostic biomarker, with the global registry of acute coronary events (GRACE) risk assessment tool, in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Between July 2007 and June 2008, 137 patient subjects (mean age : 61±12 years, M : F=108 : 29) with ACS who underwent coronary intervention, but did not have a prior percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and/or follow-up coronary angiogram, were enrolled. We estimated the all-cause mortality or death/MI, in-hospital and to 6 months, using the GRACE risk scores and compared these estimates with serum PTX3 concentrations. RESULTS: The serum PTX3 concentration showed a significant increase in ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) greater than the unstable angina pectoris (UAP) group (2.4±2.1 ng/mL vs. 1.3±0.9 ng/mL, p= 0.017, respectively), but did not show a significant difference between non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and the UAP group (1.9±1.4 ng/mL vs. 1.3±0.9 ng/mL, p=0.083, respectively). The serum PTX3 concentration was closely related to death/MI in-hospital (r=0.242, p=0.015) and death/MI to 6 months (r=0.224, p=0.023), respectively. The serum PTX3 concentration was not related to all-cause mortality in-hospital (r=0.112, p=0.269) and to 6 months (r=0.132, p=0.191), respectively. Among the parameters determining the GRACE risk scores, the degree of Killip class in congestive heart failure (CHF) was independently associated with the supramedian PTX3 concentration [odds ratio: 2.229 (95% confidence interval: 1.038-4.787), p=0.040]. CONCLUSION: The serum PTX3 level provides important information for the risk stratification of CHF among the parameters determining the GRACE risk scores in subjects with ACS.

PURPOSE: One of the main challenges of lung cancer research is identifying patients at high risk for recurrence after surgical resection. Simple, accurate, and reproducible methods of evaluating individual risks of recurrence are needed. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Based on a combined analysis of time-to-recurrence data, censoring information, and microarray data from a set of 138 patients, we selected statistically significant genes thought to be predictive of disease recurrence. The number of genes was further reduced by eliminating those whose expression levels were not reproducible by real-time quantitative PCR. Within these variables, a recurrence prediction model was constructed using Cox proportional hazard regression and validated via two independent cohorts (n = 56 and n = 59). RESULTS: After performing a log-rank test of the microarray data and successively selecting genes based on real-time quantitative PCR analysis, the most significant 18 genes had P values of <0.05. After subsequent stepwise variable selection based on gene expression information and clinical variables, the recurrence prediction model consisted of six genes (CALB1, MMP7, SLC1A7, GSTA1, CCL19, and IFI44). Two pathologic variables, pStage and cellular differentiation, were developed. Validation by two independent cohorts confirmed that the proposed model is significantly accurate (P = 0.0314 and 0.0305, respectively). The predicted median recurrence-free survival times for each patient correlated well with the actual data. CONCLUSIONS: We have developed an accurate, technically simple, and reproducible method for predicting individual recurrence risks. This model would potentially be useful in developing customized strategies for managing lung cancer.
