Background: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are increasing in developing countries like India and it has high relapse rates. Locus of control (LOC) and impulsivity can be important predictors of relapse and knowledge about them can help in management of AUD. Method: Cross-sectional analytical study of 116 indoor patients in tertiary care hospital, between ages 18 and 65 years diagnosed as AUD according to DSM-5, after acute detoxification was done. For interview, a sociodemographic sheet, Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test, Drinking-Related Locus of Control Scale, and Barrett's Impulsiveness Scale 11 scale (Gujarati versions) were used. Patients with complicated withdrawal and any other comorbid organic brain conditions were excluded. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Result: Total participants consisted of 65% middle-aged (35-50 years) rural inhabitants. Eighty-six-percent of patients were employed and around 80% were educated >5th standard. No association was found between sociodemographic variables and severity of alcohol use. Severity of alcohol use increased with more duration of alcohol consumption (P = 0.001). Patients being earlier aged for first intake of alcohol had a high external LOC (r = 0.209, P = 0.050). Patients with high external LOC (P = 0.003) and more impulsivity (P = 0.001) had more relapses (more numbers of attempts to quit alcohol). With increased external LOC (r = 0.315) and increased impulsivity (r = 0.716), severity of alcohol use also increased. As impulsivity increased, patients' LOC was found more toward external side (P = 0.007) (r = 0.345). Conclusion: External LOC and impulsivity have a strong association with alcohol use. Patients with high external LOC and more impulsivity had early age of first intake, severe alcohol use, and more duration of alcohol consumption.

Background: India's population has seen increasing access to the Internet and gaming mainly in adolescents and young adults. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence and correlates of Internet gaming and its effects on the psychological well-being of gamers versus nongamers. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional survey was done to enroll a convenient sample of nongamers, violent gamers, and nonviolent gamers. Measures included Psychological general well-being scale-short (PGWB-S), Internet Gaming Disorder-Short Form-9 (IGDS9-SF), name, frequency, and duration of game use. Results: The study enrolled 119 nongamers, 62 violent gamers, and 58 non-violent gamers. The prevalence of IGD was 0.8%. PGWB-S scores of gamers were comparable to nongamers. On multiple linear regression, lower PGWB-S score and higher frequency of use were found significantly associated with higher IGDSF-S9 scores. Violent gaming was found significantly associated with male gender (P ≤ 0.001), frequency (P = 0.012), and duration of game use (P ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: The study provides empirical evidence for the "gaming as a consequence of self-medication" hypothesis.

Non-invasive, molecularly-specific, focal modulation of brain circuits with low off-target effects can lead to breakthroughs in treatments of brain disorders. We systemically inject engineered ultrasound-controllable drug carriers and subsequently apply a novel two-component Aggregation and Uncaging Focused Ultrasound Sequence (AU-FUS) at the desired targets inside the brain. The first sequence aggregates drug carriers with millimeter-precision by orders of magnitude. The second sequence uncages the carrier's cargo locally to achieve high target specificity without compromising the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Upon release from the carriers, drugs locally cross the intact BBB. We show circuit-specific manipulation of sensory signaling in motor cortex in rats by locally concentrating and releasing a GABAA receptor agonist from ultrasound-controlled carriers. Our approach uses orders of magnitude (1300x) less drug than is otherwise required by systemic injection and requires very low ultrasound pressures (20-fold below FDA safety limits for diagnostic imaging). We show that the BBB remains intact using passive cavitation detection (PCD), MRI-contrast agents and, importantly, also by sensitive fluorescent dye extravasation and immunohistochemistry.

Everyday decisions frequently require choosing among multiple alternatives. Yet the optimal policy for such decisions is unknown. Here we derive the normative policy for general multi-alternative decisions. This strategy requires evidence accumulation to nonlinear, time-dependent bounds that trigger choices. A geometric symmetry in those boundaries allows the optimal strategy to be implemented by a simple neural circuit involving normalization with fixed decision bounds and an urgency signal. The model captures several key features of the response of decision-making neurons as well as the increase in reaction time as a function of the number of alternatives, known as Hick's law. In addition, we show that in the presence of divisive normalization and internal variability, our model can account for several so-called 'irrational' behaviors, such as the similarity effect as well as the violation of both the independence of irrelevant alternatives principle and the regularity principle.

RESUMO

Neurological disturbances caused by lithium range from simple side effects such as benign tremor to acute reversible neurotoxicity. Rarely, lithium is reported to cause irreversible, permanent neurological sequelae most commonly manifested as cerebellar dysfunction, although other presentations have also been described. We report two cases of persistent cerebellar syndrome following acute lithium toxicity and discuss them in the light of existing literature on the subject.

The hybrids of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and single stranded DNA (ssDNA) are novel nanoscale materials having remarkable applications in nanotechnology. The absorption of nucleobases on the surface of a SWCNT depends strongly on the ionic strength of the medium. In this paper, using atomistic molecular dynamics we have shown that at low salt concentration ssDNA wraps on the surface of SWCNT through hydrophobic π-π stacking between the DNA bases and the sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms of the carbon nanotube. At high salt concentration, however, the DNA molecule adopts a partially folded structure and the ssDNA-SWCNT wrapping gets weakened significantly due to the self-stacking of the DNA bases. Our study can find relevance in CNT mediated gene delivery processes where subsequent unwrapping of the gene from its carrier is anticipated across the cell membrane regulated by an existing salt concentration gradient.
