Parasites and obesity are health problems worldwide. Rabbits are production animals yielding one of the healthiest meats, also taking advantage of skin, hair, limbs and excreta. It is among the most frequent pets in some countries and widely used as animal model in research. Psoroptes cuniculi is a mite of high transmission rate, affecting welfare and production and obesity causes multiple metabolic, endocrine and immunological disorders, being an emerging problem in domestic animals. Obesity and acarosis are prolonged stressors, modifying the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis that can induce metabolic and behavioral disorders. Alterations caused by comorbidities could be similar to or different from those induced by each morbidity separately. We analyzed the influence of obesity on the infection degree with P. cuniculi and on behavior and production. Rabbit does induced to obesity were infected and mated; behaviors in the open field test, obesity estimation indices and productive parameters at delivery and weaning were analyzed. The acarosis induced a decrease in feed intake and a decrease in body weight, a decrease in locomotor, exploratory and chinning behaviors in normal weight and obese does. The infection induced 23% mortality at birth, obesity 45% and comorbidity 74%, while in normal weight rabbits a 6.5% was observed. Weight gain from birth to weaning was lower in the comorbid group, reaching a litter weight of 4.5±0.13 kg in healthy normal weight does and 2.6±0.67 kg in comorbid does. The disturbances induced by the comorbidity were magnified in both behavioral and productive parameters.

We determined whether sheep discriminate among different mineral supplements containing P and Mg and if they modify their selection as a function of the basal diet received. Forty lambs were offered four-way choices among inorganic sources of P and Mg: magnesium oxide in its coarse 1) C-MgO and granular 2) MgO forms and magnesium phosphate: 3) Mag33 (33% Mg and 2.7% P), and 4) MGP (25% Mg and 15% P), and two-way choices between MGP and each of the other minerals, and between MgO and C-MgO (baseline). Subsequently, lambs were randomly assigned to four groups (10 lambs/group) and fed rations such that the levels of Mg and P were low (LMg_LP), adequate (NMg_NP), low in Mg and adequate in P (LMg_NP), or adequate in Mg and low in P (NMg_LP). After 29 d, choice tests (post-deficiency) were repeated. During baseline, lambs ate and preferred Mag33 > C-MgO = MGP > MgO (P < 0.05). This pattern remained during post-deficiency tests, but lambs in LMg_LP and LMg_NP increased their preference for MGP and C-MgO, respectively, whereas lambs in NMg_LP increased their preference for C-MgO and MGP relative to baseline (P < 0.05). The serum concentrations of P and Mg increased after preference tests, and preference for MgO and MGP in low-Mg groups increased as the serum concentration of Mg declined (P < 0.05). Thus, lambs discriminated among different minerals and some groups modified their preferences based on the basal diets received, which rectified mineral imbalances.

We hypothesized that ruminants discriminate among different mineral supplements and modify their selection as a function of need. Forty lambs were offered four-way choices among P, Ca, and Mg sources: monosodium phosphate (MSP), Magnesium phosphate (MGP), Monocalcium phosphate (MCP), and Dicalcium phosphate (DCP); and two-way choices between DCP and the other mineral sources (Baseline). Subsequently, lambs were randomly assigned to four groups (10 lambs/group) and fed rations such that levels of Ca and P were low (LCa_LP), adequate (NCa_NP), low in Ca and adequate in P (LCa_NP), or adequate in Ca and low in P (NCa_LP). Four- and two-way choice tests were repeated (Post-deficiency). During Baseline, lambs ate and preferred MSP > MGP>DCP = MCP (p < .0001), showing that they discriminated among minerals. This pattern remained during four-way Post-deficiency tests, but lambs in LCa_LP, LCa_NP, and NCa_LP showed increased preference for MCP, MGP, and DCP, respectively, relative to other groups and Baseline (p < .05). Some mineral preference also changed in relation to serum concentration of P and Ca. Thus, lambs discriminated among minerals and some groups modified their preferences from Baseline to Post-deficiency choice tests, likely influenced by mineral needs, which in turn contributed to rectify mineral imbalances.

Ancylostoma caninum is a gastrointestinal parasite that affect dogs and humans, considered a worldwide public health problem. The control of these parasitosis is increasingly difficult due to the development of multi-drug resistance. Bacillus thuringiensis is an insecticidal, spore forming bacterium, often species specific. The strain GP526 of B. thuringiensis has toxic effect on the cestode Dipylidium caninum and the trematode Centrocestus formosanus, both of them zoonotic parasites. The high degrees of specificity and environment safe make B. thuringiensis suitable for use against pathogen parasites, especially those resistant to synthetic chemical insecticides. The objective of the current work was to evaluate the in vitro effect of B. thuringiensis on Ancylostoma caninum. Spore-crystal mixture of the strains was co-incubated with 120 adult nematodes (males, non-pregnant females and pregnant females) or with 4800 eggs. GP526 showed a nematicidal effect with an LT50 of 35.8 h and an LC50 of 60 µg/ml. It also showed an ovicidal effect with an LC50 of 94.9 µg/ml. Histological analyses showed detachment of the cuticle and of the uterus in adult females, and vacuolization with destruction of the eggs. The effects of GP526 strain were comparable to those of albendazole, allowing us to propose GP526 for A. caninum control, in both, the adult stage at a gastrointestinal level, and in egg stage in the environment. In addition, GP526 can be proposed as a potential broad spectrum antiparasitic drug.

In several ungulate species, the tail is used to communicate sexual states of the female. However, the role of the tail or its movements in the sexual attractiveness of the ewe and sexual activity of the ram is still unknown. Two experiments were performed to determine the influence of the tail of the ewe in these aspects. In Experiment 1, 25 rams were individually tested in random order on two experimental dates using two-choice tests to determine whether intact or docked ewes differ in sexual attractiveness, while in Experiment 2, the sexual performance of the ram towards intact or docked ewes was compared. Both experiments were performed with restrained oestrous ewes during 5-min tests. In Experiment 1, rams approach first to intact or docked ewes randomly, but thereafter mounted and courted more tailed than docked ewes (p < 0.05). In Experiment 2, 22 rams were individually tested with intact and with docked ewes. The first day, 10 rams were tested with an intact ewe and 12 with a docked ewe. The following day, the tests were crossover, so each ram was tested with the other types of ewe. Rams displayed similar courtship and mounting behaviours similarly towards tailed and docked ewes. It was concluded that rams prefer to court and mate with tailed ewes over docked ewes. However, they display similar behaviours when they cannot choose between ewes of both conditions.

The aim of the present study was to characterize milk production and preweaning development of lambs from Katahdin and Saint Croix sheep. Milk production was measured weekly, from birth to 8 weeks using oxytocin technique, in 12 Katahdin (62.0 ± 5.0 kg) and 11 Saint Croix (46.2 ± 4.83 kg) multiparous ewes. The mean daily milk production for the Katahdin ewes was 1.38 ± 0.54 L/day and for the Saint Croix ewes it was 1.26 ± 0.49 L/day (P > 0.05) (mean ± SE for each group). However, more colostrum was produced immediately after parturition by the Katahdin than Saint Croix ewes (P < 0.001). The lamb's weight and weight gain were recorded weekly. The birth weight of lambs from both breeds was similar but at weaning, the Katahdin lambs were heavier (16.46 ± 0.58 kg) than the Saint Croix lambs (12.90 ± 0.59 kg) (P < 0.001). Furthermore, a significant positive correlation was found between daily milk yield and daily gain weight in both breeds, but with a greater slope in Katahdin lambs in comparison with Saint Croix lambs. It was concluded that Saint Croix and Katahdin hair sheep breeds produced similar amounts of milk during lactation, but the latter produced heavier lambs at weaning.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of diet, energy balance and milk production on oxidative stress in early-lactating, Holstein-Friesian dairy cows fed to produce either low or high levels of milk. Indicators of energy balance (non-esterified fatty acids, ß-hydroxybutyrate, glucose and insulin-like growth factor-1) and indicators of oxidative stress (reactive oxygen metabolites and biological antioxidants) were measured in the first 5 weeks of lactation. Energy balance indicators showed that high producing animals had a lower degree of negative energy balance. Diet was found to have an indirect effect on the level of oxidative stress. Factors associated with a high level of oxidative stress were severe negative energy balance (mean -71 ± 6.85 27 MJ/cow/day, P < 0.05) and lower levels of milk production (mean 26.4 ± 0.07 28 L/cow/day, P < 0 .05). Further studies will be required to more precisely determine the specific effects of diet, energy balance and milk production on such stress in dairy cows and to establish normal ranges for these biomarkers.
