RESUMO

Fecal incontinence is a refractory disease in colorectal surgery. The main clinical manifestation is that patients cannot control the discharge of gas, solid or liquid feces in the rectum autonomously. It is easy to bring shame to patients and seriously affect their physical and mental health. Reducing the frequency of fecal incontinence, restoring anal sphincter function, and improving patient quality of life are important goals for treating fecal incontinence. With the development of medical technology and the improvement of treatment plans for fecal incontinence, patients with fecal incontinence usually undergo conservative treatment first, and if conservative treatment is ineffective, surgery can be chosen. Non-surgical treatment methods commonly used in clinical practice include biofeedback therapy, magnetic stimulation therapy, pelvic floor muscle training, anal sphincter training, Kegel training, and other rehabilitation treatments. This article discusses the non-surgical treatment methods for fecal incontinence, hoping to provide a choice for clinical treatment of fecal incontinence.

RESUMO

AIMS: Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) are associated with improved survival outcomes in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), but the data on the response to treatment and tumour-based endpoints across different tumour types are unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a retrospective study at two tertiary referral centres in Taiwan. All adult patients treated with ICIs between January 2015 and December 2021 were included. The primary outcome was overall survival and the secondary outcomes were progression-free survival (PFS) and clinical benefit rates. RESULTS: In total, 734 patients were enrolled in our study, of which 171 were RAASi users and 563 were non-users. Compared with non-users, RAASi users had a longer median overall survival [26.8 (interquartile range 11.3-not reached) versus 15.2 (interquartile range 5.1-58.4) months, P < 0.001] and PFS [12.2 (interquartile range 3.9-34.5) versus 5.0 (interquartile range 2.2-15.2) months, P < 0.001]. In univariate Cox proportional hazard analyses, the use of RAASi was associated with a 40% reduction in the risk of mortality [hazard ratio 0.58 (95% confidence interval 0.44-0.76), P < 0.001] and disease progression [hazard ratio 0.62 (95% confidence interval 0.50-0.77), P < 0.001]. The association remained significant after adjusting for underlying comorbidities and cancer therapy in multivariate Cox analyses. A similar trend was observed for PFS. Furthermore, RAASi users experienced a greater clinical benefit rate than non-users (69% versus 57%, P = 0.006). Importantly, the use of RAASi before ICI initiation was not associated with improved overall survival and PFS. RAASi were not associated with an increased risk of adverse events. CONCLUSION: The use of RAASi is associated with improved survival outcomes, treatment response and tumour-based endpoints in patients undergoing immunotherapy.

RESUMO

To assess the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the Chinese version of the atopic dermatitis control tool (ADCT). After this study obtained authorization for the Chinese version of the ADCT scale. 114 patients with atopic dermatitis were enrolled from the Department of Dermatology, Peking University First Hospital using convenience sampling from October 2022. Patients were surveyed using the General Information Questionnaire, Chinese version of ADCT, patient-oriented eczema measure (POEM),peak pruritus numerical rating scale (PP-NRS),dermatology life quality index (DLQI) and the global patient self-assessment for disease severity. Mann-Whitney rank sum test and Spearman correlation analysis were used for item analysis; content validity was assessed using content validity index (CVI); exploratory factor analysis was used to assess structural validity; Cronbach' alpha coefficient was used to assess internal consistency; Spearman correlation analysis was used to assess the correlation of ADCT with other scales to assess external responsiveness. The results showed that all items were retained by item analysis. I-CVI was 0.9-1, and S-CVI/Average was 0.983; the scale extracted one common factor by factor analysis, the cumulative variance explanation rate was 77.927%; the Cronbach' alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.937; the correlation coefficients of the Chinese version of ADCT with POEM, PP-NRS, and DLQI were 0.805, 0.861, and 0.709 respectively. In conclusion, the Chinese version of the ADCT has adequate reliability, validity and responsiveness, and is suitable for measuring disease control in Chinese patients with atopic dermatitis.

RESUMO

Objectives: In order to provide valuable information for the diagnosis and treatment of dermatitis, the prevalence rate and trend changes of common allergens in patients with allergic skin diseases in Beijing City were investigated and analyzed. Methods: This study was a retrospective data collection study. A total of 2 822 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis with allergen examinations were collected from Peking University First Hospital from 2017 to 2021, most of them were adults, and 83%(2 340/2 822) were over 18 years old. The ImmunoCAP fluorescent enzyme-linked immunoassay system was used to quantify specific IgE. The positive rate of each allergen was counted according to age, gender and year. The epidemiological characteristics and trends were analyzed. Results: In the past five years, 22 503 allergen-specific IgE test data were collected, and the positive rate of allergens in 40%(1 122/2 822) of the 2 822 patients was mainly multiple sensitization, the positive rate of allergens and multiple sensitization rates were the highest in people aged 13-18 years old. The 2 822 patients were dominated by inhaled allergens, and the highest positive rate was inhaled mixture (29.3%). The top five positive rates of inhaled allergens were Dermatophagoides farina (26.7%), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (25.5%), Mugwort (23.9%), Birch pollen (19.2%) and Siberian cocklebur (18.2%). The top five positive rates of food allergens were shrimp (15.2%), peanut (14.8%), sesame (14.7%), wheat (13.2%) and milk (13.1%). Analysis of the positive rate of allergens in different age groups showed except for the positive rate of birch pollen peaked at 3-12 years old, other inhaled allergens were the highest food allergens in 13-18 years old. Among food allergens, the positive rates of fx5, milk, egg and wheat were the highest in <3 years old, the positive rate decreased gradually with age, and the positive rate of other food allergens peaked at 13-18 years old, and the shrimp and crab was the highest in adult. The positive rate of various allergens in the 2 822 patients showed little difference between male and female and the male was slightly higher than female. In the past five years, the positive rate of allergens has been on the rise. The changes of inhaled allergens in cat/dog hair dander, Dermatophagoides farina and cicadas were large, while the positive rate of food allergens was stable. Conclusions: The etiology of the allergic skin diseases is complex, which may be related to allergen exposure, heredity, immunity, environmental factors, abnormal skin barrier function, etc. This study showed the distribution of allergens in patients with allergic skin diseases in Beijing City to a certain extent. It provided epidemiological data and clinical evidence for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases.

RESUMO

Deionization of salt, contaminated underground and inorganic waste waters for water recycling and reuse is of increasing importance mainly due to the shortage of freshwater worldwide. Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) possessing a high electrosorption capacity and energy efficiency has been considered a promising method for desalination. However, the MCDI reaction system has limited applications because of the high interfacial resistance during operation. In the present work, the novel sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO) serving as a hydrophilic cation exchange membrane that was coated directly on the activated carbon (AC) electrode was prepared to enhance capacitive deionization of saltwater. Experimentally, the electrosorption capacity and charge efficiency of the AC/SGO (negative)||AC (positive) electrode pair using the coated SGO thin film increased from 12.8 to 19.8 mg/g and 56.7 to 89.3%, respectively. The enhancements were associated with the reduction of the co-ion effect during electrosorption. The strong negative PhSO3- group grafted on the SGO thin film could selectively accelerate the transport rate of cations during CDI. The increase of the charge efficiency also led to lower implemented current. This work demonstrates a simple, low-cost and effective desalination method that will likely have many new applications especially in water recycling and reuse.

RESUMO

Many antidepressants stimulate adult hippocampal neurogenesis, but the mechanisms by which they increase neurogenesis and modulate behavior are incompletely understood. Here we show that hippocampal bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is modulated by antidepressant treatment, and that the changes in BMP signaling mediate effects of antidepressant treatment on neural progenitor cell proliferation and behavior. Treatment with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine suppressed BMP signaling in the adult mouse hippocampus both by decreasing levels of BMP4 ligand and increasing production of the BMP inhibitor noggin. Increasing BMP signaling in the hippocampus via viral overexpression of BMP4 blocked the effects of fluoxetine on proliferation in the dentate gyrus and on depressive behavior. Conversely, inhibiting BMP signaling via viral overexpression of noggin in the hippocampus or infusion of noggin into the ventricles exerted antidepressant and anxiolytic activity along with an increase in hippocampal neurogenesis. Similarly, conditional genetic deletion of the type II BMP receptor in Ascl1-expressing cells promoted neurogenesis and reduced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, suggesting that neural progenitor cells contribute to the effects of BMP signaling on affective behavior. These observations indicate that BMP signaling in the hippocampus regulates depressive behavior, and that decreasing BMP signaling may be required for the effects of some antidepressants. Thus BMP signaling is a new and powerful potential target for the treatment of depression.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long-term nucleos(t)ide analogues therapy may reduce hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in chronic hepatitis B patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. AIM: To investigate in a retrospective-prospective study whether this beneficial effect would be reduced in cirrhotic patients who discontinued a successful course of entecavir (ETV) therapy. METHODS: The study included 586 hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative patients with compensated cirrhosis, mean age of 53.8 ± 10 years and 81% males, treated with ETV for at least 12 months. After ETV therapy for 46.5 ± 22.9 months, 205 patients who achieved hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA suppression discontinued therapy. The clinical outcomes were assessed and HCC incidence was compared between propensity score (PS)-matched patients who continued and patients who discontinued ETV therapy by Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver stopping rule. RESULTS: During a mean duration of 59.3 ± 19 months after start of ETV therapy, nine and six HCC developed in an estimated annual incidence of 2.3% and 1.6% in 154 PS-matched patients who continued and who discontinued ETV therapy, respectively (P = 0.587). Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses showed that age (HR 1.065, P < 0.001) and HBV DNA (HR 1.216, P = 0.048) were the significant factors for HCC development. The rates of adverse clinical outcomes were comparable. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical outcomes, including HCC, after cessation of a successful course of entecavir therapy in patients with compensated cirrhosis were comparable to those who continued therapy. The results suggest that this strategy of finite therapy is safe and a feasible alternative to indefinite therapy, especially in a low resources setting.

RESUMO

In the present study, silicon carbide (SiC) recovered from silicon sludge wastes is used as catalysts for photocatalytic reduction of CO2. By X-ray diffraction, it is clear that the main components in the silicon sludge wastes are silicon and SiC. The grain size of the SiC separated from the sludge waste is in the range of 10-20 µm in diameter (observed by scanning electron microscopy). By solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, it is found that α-SiC is the main crystallite in the purified SiC. The α-SiC has the band-gap of 3.0 eV. To yield C1-C2chemicals from photocatalytic reduction of CO2, hydrogen is provided by simultaneous photocatalytic splitting of H2O. Under the light (253-2000 nm) illumination, 12.03 and 1.22 µmol/h g cat of formic and acetic acids, respectively, can be yielded.

RESUMO

Transparent conductive glasses such as thin film transistor (TFT) array and colour filter glasses were recovered from the TFT-liquid crystal display panel wastes by dismantling and sonic cleaning. Noble metals (i.e. platinum (Pt)) and indium tin oxide (ITO) are generally used in the cathode of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). To reduce the DSSC cost, Pt was replaced with nano nickel-encapsulated carbon-shell (Ni@C) nanoparticles, which were prepared by carbonization of Ni²âº-ß-cyclodextrin at 673 K for 2 h. The recovered conductive glasses were used in the DSSC electrodes in the substitution of relatively expensive ITO. Interestingly, the efficiency of the DSSC having the Ni@C-coated cathode is as high as 2.54%. Moreover, the cost of the DSSC using the recovered materials can be reduced by at least 24%.

RESUMO

Drinking water shortage has become worse in recent decades. A new capacitive deionization (CDI) method for increasing water supplies through the effective desalination of seawater has been developed. Silver as nano Ag and Ag@C which was prepared by carbonization of the Ag(+)-ß-cyclodextrin complex at 573 K for 30 min can add the antimicrobial function into the CDI process. The Ag@C and Ag nanoparticles dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (Ag@C/rGO and nano Ag/rGO) were used as the CDI electrodes. The nano Ag/rGO and Ag@C/rGO electrodes can reduce the charging resistant, and enhance the electrosorption capability. Better CDI efficiencies with the nano Ag/rGO and Ag@C/rGO electrodes can therefore be obtained. When reversed the voltage, the electrodes can be recovered up to 90% within 5 min. This work presents the feasibility for the nano Ag and Ag@C on rGO electrodes applied in CDI process to produce drinking water from seawater or saline water.

RESUMO

Chondrosarcoma is the second most common sarcoma in bone malignancy and is characterized by a high metastatic potential. Angiogenesis is essential for the cancer metastasis. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) has been implicated in tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. However, the relationship of ET-1 with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and angiogenesis in human chondrosarcoma cells is mostly unknown. Here, we found that the expression of ET-1 and VEGF were correlated with tumor stage and were significantly higher than that in the normal cartilage. Exogenous ET-1 with chondrosarcoma cells promoted VEGF expression and subsequently increased migration and tube formation in endothelial progenitor cells. ET-1 increased VEGF expression and angiogenesis through ETAR, integrin-linked kinase (ILK), Akt and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) signaling cascades. Knockdown of ET-1 decreased VEGF expression and also abolished chondrosarcoma conditional medium-mediated angiogenesis in vitro as well as angiogenesis effects in the chick chorioallantoic membrane and Matrigel plug nude mice model in vivo. In addition, in the xenograft tumor angiogenesis model, knockdown of ET-1 significantly reduced tumor growth and tumor-associated angiogenesis. Taken together, these results indicate that ET-1 occurs through ETAR, ILK and Akt, which in turn activates HIF-1α, resulting in the activation of VEGF expression and contributing to the angiogenesis and tumor growth of human chondrosarcoma cells.

RESUMO

Portal hypertension and splenomegaly are common in patients with cirrhosis. However, there is limited previous in vivo research on the correlation between spleen stiffness and stages of liver fibrosis. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of spleen stiffness measurement (SSM), using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) technology, for liver fibrosis assessment. Eligible patients with chronic hepatitis B or C (n = 163) underwent concurrent liver stiffness measurement (LSM), SSM and percutaneous liver biopsy. Receiver operating characteristic curves estimated the diagnostic performance of SSM, with multiple linear regression models for LSM and SSM determining the significance of explanatory factors. Results indicated significant correlation between LSM and SSM (R(2) = 0.574, P < 0.0001). Using SSM to classify METAVIR fibrosis (METAVIR F) scores, the areas under curves were 0.839 (95% CI: 0.780-0.898) for METAVIR F1 vs F2-4, 0.936 (95% CI: 0.898-0.975) for F1-2 vs F3-4 and 0.932 (95% CI: 0.893-0.971) for F1-3 vs F4, all P < 0.001. Multiple linear regression models identified BMI, spleen stiffness, METAVIR F3 and F4, serum alanine aminotransferase, international normalized ratio of prothrombin time, sodium and platelet count as significant independent explanatory factors for liver stiffness (adjusted R(2) = 0.724, P < 0.001). Male gender, liver stiffness, METAVIR F2, F3 and F4 also significantly and independently explained spleen stiffness (adjusted R(2) = 0.647, P < 0.001). ARFI SSM is potentially useful as a single or adjunct predictor of stages of liver fibrosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the outcomes of patients with high Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores who underwent adult-to-adult live donor liver transplantation (A-A LDLT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From September 2002 to October 2010, a total of 152 adult patients underwent A-A LDLT in our institution. Recipients were stratified into a low MELD score group (Group L; MELD score≤30) and a high MELD score group (Group H; MELD score>30) to compare short-term and long-term outcomes. RESULTS: Of the 152 adult patients who underwent A-A LDLT, 9 were excluded from the analysis because they received ABO-incompatible grafts. Group H comprised 23 and Group L 120 patients. The median follow-up was 21.5 months (range, 3 to 102 m). The mean MELD score was 15.6 in Group L and 36.7 in Group H. There were no significant differences in the mean length of stay in the intensive care unit (Group L: 3.01 days vs Group H: 3.09 days, P=.932) or mean length of hospital stay (Group L: 17.89 days vs. Group H: 19.91 days, P=0.409). There were no significant differences in 1-, 3-, or 5-year survivals between patients in Groups L versus H (91.5% vs 94.7%; 86.4% vs 94.7%; and 86.4% vs 94.7%; P=.3476, log rank). CONCLUSION: The short-term and long-term outcomes of patients with high MELD scores who underwent A-A LDLT were similar to those of patients with low MELD scores. Therefore, we suggest that high MELD scores are not a contraindication to LDLT.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to retrospectively investigate the outcomes of hepatic artery (HA) reconstruction by cardiovascular surgeons in adult-to-adult living donor liver transplantation (A-A LDLT). METHODS: From April 2007 to April 2011, 187 recipients underwent A-A LDLT. After excluding seven ABO-incompatible transplant recipients, we reviewed the courses of 180 patients including 125 men and 55 women of mean age 52.5±9.2 years (range=23-71). One hundred seventy-seven patients received right-lobe grafts with inclusion of middle hepatic vein (MHV); two, right-lobe grafts without MHV; and one, left-lobe graft. A continuous, single-stitch, running suture with the parachute technique was used for HA reconstruction. The anastomosis was performed by cardiovascular surgeons employing surgical loupes with 4.5× magnification. RESULTS: The mean time for an arterial reconstruction was 10.7±4.0 minutes (median=10, range=4-30). Hepatic arterial thrombosis (HAT) was encountered in 3 (1.66%) patients. One HAT that developed on postoperative day 1 was successfully rescued by the intra-arterial infusion of urokinase. Another patient required reoperation due to a redundant kinked HA. A third HAT patient underwent successful retransplantation with a cadaveric graft on postoperative day 6. In our series, no delayed HAT was detected and no recipient deaths were related to HAT. CONCLUSION: HA reconstruction with a running suture under surgical loupes is a feasible technique in A-A LDLT. A speedy reconstruction can be performed by an experienced cardiovascular surgeon with a low incidence of HAT.

RESUMO

Venous congestion of segments V and VIII of the graft is observed frequently in right-lobe living donor liver transplants (LDLT) without middle hepatic vein (MHV) drainage. It can cause graft dysfunction and failure. Inclusion of the MHV in the right lobe graft allows optimal venous drainage but can pose adverse effects for the donor. From May 2005 to April 2011, we performed 202 right-lobe LDLTs using grafts that all (except two) contained the MHV. The mean duration of donor surgery was 558±132 minutes (median 540, range 332-1100), and estimated blood loss 441±309 mL (median 350, range 35-3200). No donor was admitted to the intensive care unit postoperatively. The mean hospital stay was 8.7±2.1 days (median 8, range 6-22). Postoperatively, 39 donors (19.5%) experienced Clavien grade I and II complications, mostly minor wound infections or massive ascites necessitating diuretic therapy. Seven (3.5%) donors displayed Clavien grade III complications, including five bile leakages requiring endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage and two abdominal wound dehiscences requiring repair under general anesthesia. There was no donor death. In conclusion, inclusion of the MHV in a right-lobe LDLT was safe for most donors.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To present our experience with simultaneous living donor liver and kidney (SLK) transplantation from two different living donors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed five SLK transplantations from two different living donors from November 2006 to December 2010. Four patients were males and one, female. Their age range was 47 to 66 years (mean, 55 years). The primary liver diseases included hepatitis B virus (n=2), alcoholic liver cirrhosis (n=2), cryptogenic liver disease (n=1), and hepatitis C virus with hepatocellular carcinoma (n=1). All five patients had chronic renal failure: four were on hemodialysis (H/D) and one on chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for 1 to 20 years. Liver implantation was performed first, followed by kidney transplantation. The liver and kidney teams worked closely to shorten the ischemia time. RESULTS: All surgical procedures were performed uneventfully and all recipients and donors survived the operations. Good liver graft function was noted in all five patients. The patient with both anti-T- and anti-B-cell positive crossmatch tests developed hyperacute rejection of the kidney graft requiring its immediate removal. This patient was maintained on regular H/D afterward. The other four patients displayed good renal function. No evidence of severe acute rejection was noted during the follow-up period (range, 9-55 months) among patients treated with tacrolimus-based immunosuppression. CONCLUSION: We suggest that SLK transplantation be performed with organs from two different instead of a single live donor.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The roles remain unclear of early on-treatment quantitative serum HBsAg and hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA levels in the prediction of a sustained response (SR) to peginterferon alfa-2a therapy in HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients infected with genotype B or C. AIMS: To determine their roles in HBeAg-negative CHB patients infected with genotype B or C. METHODS: Sixty-one patients were treated with peginterferon alfa-2a for 48 weeks. Serum HBsAg levels were quantified using the Abbott Architect HBsAg QT assay throughout treatment. Multiple regression analyses were performed to identify independent predictors of SR. RESULTS: Nineteen patients (31%) achieved SR with serum HBV DNA levels <312 copies/mL at 24 weeks post-treatment. Serum HBsAg levels at 12 (OR 31.9; 95% CI 4.8-209.6; P = 0.0003) and 24 weeks of therapy (OR 8.8; 95% CI 2.0-38.0; P = 0.0035), and HBV DNA levels at baseline (OR 7.0; 95% CI 1.3-36.2; P = 0.0203), 12 (OR 7.9; 95% CI 1.2-48.4; P = 0.0249) and 24 weeks of therapy (OR 22.3; 95% CI 2.2-224.0; P = 0.0083) were early independent predictors of SR. A serum HBsAg cut-off of 150 IU/mL at week 12 had an AUC, sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values of 0.75, 63%, 95%, 86% and 85% with respect to predicting SR respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A quantitative serum HBsAg level at 12 weeks of therapy can be used for the early prediction of SR to peginterferon therapy in HBeAg-negative CHB patients infected with genotype B or C.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aims to: (1) document the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) among methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients in Kunming and Shanghai; (2) examine risk factors for HCV by comparing those who tested positive with those who were negative and (3) examine if HCV serostatus is related to attitudes toward MMT. METHODS: Using data collected from 306 patients admitted to MMT in 2009-2010 in Shanghai and Kunming, we compared HCV-positive and HCV-negative patients (based on clinical records) on their HCV knowledge and risk behaviors and attitudes toward MMT. RESULTS: The HCV seropositive rate was 53.3% (51.3% in Shanghai and 55.5% in Kunming) and a majority of patients did not know their serostatus. Patients scored on average fewer than 6 correct out of the 20 items in the HCV knowledge questionnaire. Recent injection use and length of opiate use were strong predictors of HCV status, while no differences were found between HCV-positive and HCV-negative individuals in sexual risks or HCV knowledge. Both groups expressed similar views toward MMT. CONCLUSION: The high HCV prevalence and the general lack of knowledge about HCV infection, transmission and treatment suggest the need to provide HCV education and health promotion programs among patients in MMT.

RESUMO

A new orthorhombic phase of the multiferroic BiFeO3 has been created via strain engineering by growing it on a NdScO(3)(110)(o) substrate. The tensile-strained orthorhombic BiFeO3 phase is ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic at room temperature. A combination of nonlinear optical second harmonic generation and piezoresponse force microscopy revealed that the ferroelectric polarization in the orthorhombic phase is along the in-plane {110}(pc) directions. In addition, the corresponding rotation of the antiferromagnetic axis in this new phase was observed using x-ray linear dichroism.

RESUMO

Hyperandrogenism is a central feature of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Androgens act via the androgen receptor (AR). The rs6152G/A AR gene polymorphism has been reported to be associated with male pattern baldness (MPB), which is a common characteristic of males in PCOS families. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the rs6152G/A polymorphism and PCOS in Han Chinese women. The rs6152G/A AR gene polymorphism was screened by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in 224 PCOS women and 223 control subjects from the Reproductive and Genetic Hospital of CITIC-XIANGYA in China. There was a significantly higher prevalence of genotypes containing the A allele in PCOS patients compared with controls (P < 0.05). Patients carrying the rs6152A allele had a 1.608-fold greater risk of developing polycystic ovary syndrome compared with rs6152GG homozygotes (OR = 1.608, CI = 1.008-2.597, P < 0.05). In conclusion, the individuals carrying the rs6152A allele had significantly higher susceptibility to polycystic ovary syndrome than those that were GG homozygotes.
