Lead (Pb) can be deposited in aquatic environments that are especially subject to pollution due to wastewater and sewage disposal. This study aimed to evaluate the tolerance of Echinodorus grandiflorus (Cham. & Schltr.) Micheli to Pb and changes in growth, gas exchange, and leaf anatomy. Experiments were conducted with E. grandiflorus plants exposed to the following Pb concentrations in nutrient solution: [0; 0.75; 1.5; 3.0 and 9.0 µM Pb (NO 3)2] in a greenhouse for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, the lead concentration, growth, leaf gas exchange, and changes in leaf anatomy were evaluated. There was no mortality of E. grandiflorus plants, and they accumulated higher concentrations of Pb proportional to the concentration of the pollutant in the solution. Pb did not cause significant changes in growth, stomatal conductance, transpiration, and Ci/Ca rate but reduced the photosynthesis in E. grandiflorus. The leaf anatomy showed significant changes in the presence of Pb, reducing the epidermis and chlorophyll parenchyma. E. grandiflorus demonstrated tolerance to Pb, surviving and growing under contamination; however, it negatively modified its leaf anatomy and photosynthesis in the presence of the metal.

Shading is an environmental factor that has been little investigated regarding its effects on emergent aquatic plants. Typha domingensis Pers. is an emergent macrophyte that demonstrates some plasticity for self-shading, and as it can shade other species in the same area, the effect of shading on its traits deserves further investigation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the gas exchange, leaf anatomy, and growth of T. domingensis cultivated under increasing shading intensities. The plants were collected and propagated in a greenhouse, and the clones were subjected to four shading intensities: 0% (unshaded), 35%, 73%, and 83% shading created by black nets. Growth traits, clonal production, photosynthesis, transpiration, and leaf anatomy were evaluated. The 73% and 83% shading promoted the death of all plants, but all plants survived in the 35% and unshaded treatments. Compared with the unshaded treatment, the 35% shading treatment promoted a higher photosynthetic rate and greater transpiration, supporting increased growth and production of clones. The increase in the photosynthetic rate in the 35% shading was related to the increase in leaf area which increased the photosynthesis of the whole plant. The 73% and 83% treatments inhibited the development of photosynthetic parenchyma and stomata in T. domingensis, leading to a drastic reduction in photosynthesis and energy depletion. Therefore, T. domingensis does not tolerate intense shading, but its photosynthetic characteristics and growth are favored by mild shading, a factor that may be of great importance for its competitiveness and invasive behavior.

The occurrence of suicidal behaviors increases during adolescence. Hypersensitivity to negative social signals and deficits in cognitive control are putative mechanisms of suicidal behaviors, which necessitate confirmation in youths. Multidomain functional neuroimaging could enhance the identification of patients at suicidal risk beyond standard clinical measures. Three groups of adolescents (N = 96; 78% females, age = 11.6-18.1) were included: patients with depressive disorders and previous suicide attempts (SA, n = 29); patient controls with depressive disorders but without any suicide attempt history (PC, n = 35); and healthy controls (HC, n = 32). We scanned participants with 3T-MRI during social inclusion/exclusion (Cyberball Game) and response inhibition (Go-NoGo) tasks. Neural activation was indexed by the blood-oxygenation-level dependent (BOLD) of the hemodynamic response during three conditions in the Cyberball Game ("Control condition", "Social Inclusion", and "Social Exclusion"), and two conditions in Go-NoGo task ("Go" and "NoGo" blocks). ANCOVA-style analysis identified group effects across three whole-brain contrasts: 1) NoGo vs. Go, 2) Social inclusion vs. control condition, 3) Social exclusion vs. control condition. We found that SA had lower activation in the left insula during social inclusion vs. control condition compared to PC and HC. Moreover, SA compared to PC had higher activity in the right middle prefrontal gyrus during social exclusion vs. control condition, and in bilateral precentral gyri during NoGo vs. Go conditions. Task-related behavioral and self-report measures (Self-reported emotional reactivity in the Cyberball Game, response times and number of errors in the Go-NoGo Task) did not discriminate groups. In conclusion, adolescent suicidal behaviors are likely associated with neural alterations related to the processing of social perception and response inhibition. Further research, involving prospective designs and diverse cohorts of patients, is necessary to explore the potential of neuroimaging as a tool in understanding the emergence and progression of suicidal behaviors.

Precipitation is an important climatic element that defines the hydrological regime, and its seasonal variation produces annual dry and wet periods in some areas. This seasonality changes wetland environments and leverages the growth dynamics of macrophytes present, including Typha domingensis Pers. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of seasonal variation on the growth, anatomy and ecophysiology of T. domingensis in a natural wetland. Biometric, anatomical and ecophysiological traits of T. domingensis were evaluated over one year at four-month intervals. Reductions in photosynthesis were evidenced at the end of the wet periods and during the dry periods, and these reductions were associated with thinner palisade parenchymas. Increased stomatal indexes and densities as well as thinner epidermis observed at the beginning dry periods can be associated with higher transpiration rates during this period. The plants maintained their water contents during the dry periods, which may be related to the storage of water in leaf trabecular parenchyma, as this is the first time that results indicate the function of this tissue as a seasonal aquiferous parenchyma. In addition, increasing proportions of aerenchymas were evident during the wet periods, which may be related to a compensation mechanism for soil waterlogging. Therefore, the growth, anatomy and ecophysiology of T. domingensis plants change throughout the year to adjust to both the dry and wet periods, providing conditions for the survival of the plants and modulating population growth.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between intercellular spaces and leaf gas exchange and the effect of total intercellular space on the growth of maize and sorghum under water restriction. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement (two plant types and three water conditions: field capacity (FC = 100%), 75%FC, and 50%FC) with 10 replicates. The lack of water was a limiting factor for maize because it showed reductions in leaf area, leaf thickness, biomass, and gas exchange parameters, while sorghum remained unchanged, maintaining its water-use efficiency. This maintenance was correlated with the growth of intercellular spaces in sorghum leaves because the increased internal volume led to better CO2 control and prevented excessive water loss under drought stress. In addition, sorghum had more stomata than maize. These characteristics contributed to the drought tolerance of sorghum, while maize could not make the same adjustments. Therefore, changes in intercellular spaces promoted adjustments to avoid water loss and may have improved CO2 diffusion, characteristics that are important for drought-tolerant plants.

Selectivity is an important aspect of modern insecticides to be able to target pests whilst maintaining beneficial entomofauna in the crop. The present objective was to assess the selectivity of different insecticides for the pupal parasitoid of soybean caterpillars, i.e., Trichospilus diatraeae Cherian & Margabandhu, 1942 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). Acephate, azadirachtin, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), deltamethrin, lufenuron, teflubenzuron and thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalothrin at the highest recommended concentrations for the soybean looper Chrysodeixis includens (Walker, [1858]) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), as well as water in the control, were used against the pupal parasitoid T. diatraeae. The insecticides and the control were sprayed on the soybean leaves, which were left to dry naturally and placed in cages with T. diatraeae females in each one. Survival data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the means were compared using Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). Survival curves were plotted according to the Kaplan-Meier method, and the pairs of curves were compared using the log-rank test at 5% probability. The insecticides azadirachtin, Bt, lufenuron and teflubenzuron did not affect T. diatraeae survival, while deltamethrin and thiamethoxam + lambda-cyhalothrin presented low toxicity and acephate was highly toxic, causing 100% mortality in the parasitoid. Azadirachtin, Bt, lufenuron and teflubenzuron are selective for T. diatraeae and could be used in IPM programs.

OBJECTIVES: Primary acute convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage (cSAH) in older patients can be observed in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) or idiopathic (with cSAH as potential initial manifestation of suspected CAA). We aimed to analyze baseline, clinical and MRI (including quantitative cSAH surface analysis and topographical probabilistic cSAH mapping) characteristics in elderly cSAH patients with CAA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Baseline/clinical/MRI characteristics of 50 consecutive primary acute cSAH patients ≥ 55 years with suspected/possible/probable CAA were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Median age was 74, with 26% of patients showing suspected, 22% possible and 52% probable CAA. Transient focal neurological episode (TFNE) was observed in 78%, with spreading symptoms in 79% (median spreading speed five minutes), a median of two episodes before cSAH diagnosis, and similar symptoms in 91% when multiple TFNE, with a median duration of 15 min. Motor/sensory/speech/visual symptoms were observed in 85%/69%/46%/8%, respectively, and brachiofacial/brachial was the most frequent distribution for sensory-motor symptoms. Positive clinical-radiological correlation was observed in 84%, headache in 22%, and antiepileptics started in 78%. MRI showed chronic intracerebral hemorrhage in 10%, cortical superficial siderosis in 68%, cerebral microbleeds in 48%, median total Fazekas score of 3, lacunes in 6% and DWI lesion (all unique/cortical/ < 10 mm) in 6%. cSAH involved a median of 1 sulcus, with central sulcus as most frequently (47.5%) involved followed by precentral sulcus (17%). Median cSAH surface was 2170 mm2. No baseline, clinical or MRI characteristics were associated with cSAH surface extent in multivariate analysis. Cultivation of species of the genus Eucalyptus is important for the Brazilian economy, with 6.97 million hectares planted. Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae), detected in Brazil in 2003, has dispersed and now damages Eucalyptus crops in all regions of this country. The location and identification of entomopathogenic fungi isolates may increase the options for integrated pest management. The objective of this research was to evaluate the pathogenicity of Cordyceps cateniannulata and Cordyceps javanica isolates to G. brimblecombei. Ten nymphs of G. brimblecombei, with or without lerps, were placed per Eucalyptus leaf cut with one of its edges on hydroretentive gel inside Petri dishes. The fungi isolates were suspended in a solution of Tween 80 (0.1%) at the concentration of 1.0 x 108 conidia mL-1 and sprayed on the G. brimblecombei nymphs. The mortality of this insect was evaluated daily for seven days, and the dead individuals were transferred to humid chambers. The conidia viability of the isolates was greater than 93%. The mortality of G. brimblecombei nymphs, seven days after the application of the fungi, was 100%. This is the first report of the pathogenicity of C. cateniannulata and C. javanica isolates, occurring naturally in the field, to G. brimblecombei.

RESUMO

AIMS: This manuscript aimed to produce an illustrated booklet of Brazilian sign language (LIBRAS) booklet to facilitate the communication between dentists (and academics) and deaf patients during dental treatment and other healthcare promotion activities. METHODS AND RESULTS: A literature review was conducted to select signs, symptoms, and diseases related to dentistry expressed in LIBRAS; in addition, photographs were taken to illustrate and produce the booklet. The booklet (in PDF format) was made available on an open-access website and printed copies were freely distributed at the dental clinics of the Federal University of Pará. CONCLUSION: Learning of specific LIBRAS is extremely important to guarantee social inclusion and improve dental treatment of deaf patients.

Typha domingensis Pers. is a plant that grows in marshy environments, where cadmium (Cd) accumulates. The root is the first organ that comes into contact with the metal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Cd on the roots of T. domingensis. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using different Cd concentrations: (1) 0 µM (control), (2) 10 µM, and (3) 50 µM, with 10 replicates for 90 days. The plants were placed in plastic containers containing 5 L of nutrient solution modified with the different Cd concentrations. At the end of the experiment, the roots were measured, sampled, fixed, and subjected to usual plant microtechniques. The slides were observed and photographed under light microscopy and analyzed in ImageJ software. To measure Cd absorption, atomic-absorption spectrometry was used. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and comparison of means by the Scott-Knott test at P < 0.05. When exposed to 50 µM of Cd, the roots accumulated 99.35% of the Cd. At this concentration, there was a reduction in the exodermis but there was an increase in the diameter of the cortical cells and in the proportion of aerenchyma in the cortex. There was an increase in the root cap, which guaranteed the protection of the primary meristems. Therefore, T. domingensis adjusts its root anatomy improving the Cd tolerance and shows potential for phytoremediation purposes.

This work aimed to evaluate the effects of lower water levels on leaf intercellular spaces and to assess their relations with the gas exchange, anatomy, and growth of Sorghum bicolor. Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, in which plants were subjected to three water conditions (ten replicates, n = 30): well-irrigated, decreased irrigation, and limited irrigation. Lower water levels had no significant effect on the growth of S. bicolor but increased the biomass of the roots. Moreover, the number of leaves, leaf area, and leaf size as well as the chlorophyll content were not affected by lower water levels, and no significant changes were detected for whole plant photosynthesis, transpiration, or stomatal conductance. The water content of the plants and the water potential remained unchanged. However, compared with other treatments, the decreased irrigation decreased water loss and increased the water retention. Lower water levels increased the intercellular CO2 percentage, mesophyll area, and proportion of stomatal cavities and promoted minor changes in leaf tissue and stomatal traits. The increased stomatal cavities provided higher CO2 uptake and prevented excessive water loss. Thus, modifications to the intercellular spaces promoted conditions to avoid excessive water loss while concurrently improving CO2 uptake, which are important traits for drought-tolerant plants.

The relationship between acidosis and coagulopathy has long been described in vitro and in trauma patients, but not yet in orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The association of metabolic acidosis with coagulopathy and with transfusion requirements was evaluated in patients submitted to OLT. Changes in acid-base and coagulation parameters were analyzed by repeated measures. Regression analyses [adjusted for sex, age, model for end stage liver disease (MELD) score, and baseline values of hemoglobin, fibrinogen, international normalized ratio, platelets] determined the association of acid-base parameters with coagulation markers and transfusion requirement. We included 95 patients, 66% were male, 49.5% of the patients had hepatocellular carcinoma and the mean MELD score was 20.4 (SD 8.9). The values of all the coagulation and acid-base parameters significantly changed during OLT, particularly in the reperfusion phase. After adjustments for baseline parameters, the decrease in pH and base excess (BE) values were associated with a decrease in fibrinogen levels (mean decrease of fibrinogen level = 14.88 mg/dL per 0.1 unit reduction of pH values and 3.6 mg/dL per 1 mmol/L reduction of BE levels) and an increase in red blood cells transfusion (2.16 units of RBC per 0.1 unit reduction of pH and 0.38 units of RBC per 1 mmol/L reduction of BE levels). Among multiple factors potentially associated with adverse outcomes, decreasing pH levels were independently associated with the length of hospitalization but not with in-hospital mortality. Metabolic acidosis is independently associated with decreased fibrinogen levels and increased intraoperative transfusion requirement during OLT. Awareness of that association may improve treatment strategies to reduce intraoperative bleeding risk in OLT.

Temperature is one of the abiotic factors that strongly influences the biology and behavior of insects. In this study, we assessed the development of egg parasitoids Ooencyrtus submetallicus and Telenomus podisi parasitizing Euschistus heros eggs at different temperatures, and estimated the average number of generations for seven representative soybean-producing regions in Brazil. A comparative biology study was conducted, where the percentage of parasitism and emergence, life cycle duration (egg-adult), and longevity were found to be similar between O. submetallicus and T. podisi. The sex ratio and the number of individuals emerged from parasitized egg were higher in O. submetallicus in all regions. In the study of thermal requirements, temperatures of 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 33 °C were tested. O. submetallicus and T. podisi developed at temperatures between 16 and 31 °C. The base temperature (Tb) for O. submetallicus and T. podisi was 9.3 and 6.7 °C, respectively; the thermal constant (K) was 336.9 and 272.7 degree-days, respectively. The estimated average number of annual generations of both parasitoids was higher than the host. O. submetallicus and T. podisi have the same ability to parasitize and develop in eggs of E. heros under the conditions studied. Both parasitoids exhibited satisfactory development and parasitism at temperatures between 19 and 31 °C. The development of both parasitoids was faster than their host, and the number of generations was higher for the seven studied localities.

The present study aimed to evaluate root cortical aerenchyma formation in response to Cd-driven hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) production and the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the alleviation of Cd oxidative stress in maize roots and its effects on aerenchyma development. Maize plants were subjected to continuous flooding for 30 days, and the following treatments were applied weekly: Cd(NO3 )2 at 0, 10, and 50 µM and Na2 [Fe(CN)5 NO]·2H2 O (an NO donor) at 0.5, 0.1, and 0.2 µM. The root biometrics; oxidative stress indicators H2 O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA); and activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were analyzed. The root dry and fresh masses decreased at higher concentrations of NO and Cd. H2 O2 also decreased at higher NO concentrations; however, MDA increased only at higher Cd levels. SOD activity decreased at higher concentrations of NO, but CAT activity increased. Aerenchyma development decreased in response to NO. Consequently, NO acts as an antagonist to Cd, decreasing the concentration of H2 O2 by reducing SOD activity and increasing CAT activity. Although H2 O2 is directly linked to aerenchyma formation, increased H2 O2 concentrations are necessary for root cortical aerenchyma development.

BACKGROUND: Acute infarction patterns have been described in cardioembolic stroke, mainly with atrial fibrillation (AF) or patent foramen ovale. We aimed to analyse acute infarction magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics in stroke patients with intracardiac thrombus (ICT) compared with stroke patients with AF. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study analysing brain MRI scans of consecutive acute symptomatic cardioembolic infarction patients associated with ICT or AF who were recruited and registered in the stroke database between June 2018 and November 2019. Diffusion-weighted imaging performed within 1 week after symptom onset, intra-/extracranial vessel imaging, echocardiography, and ≥24-h ECG monitoring were required for inclusion. Baseline, biological, and echocardiography characteristics were assessed. Analysed MRI characteristics were infarction location (anterior/middle/posterior cerebral artery territory; anterior/posterior/mixed anterior-posterior circulation; multiterritorial infarction; brainstem; cerebellum; small cortical cerebellar infarctions [SCCIs] or non-SCCI; cortical/subcortical/cortico-subcortical), lesion number, subcortical lesion size (> or <15 mm), and total infarction volume. RESULTS: We included 28 ICT and 94 AF patients presenting with acute stroke. ICT patients were younger (median age 66 vs. 81 years, p < 0.001), more frequently male (79 vs. 47%, p = 0.003), and smokers (39 vs. 17%, p = 0.013), had more frequent history of diabetes (36 vs. 18%, p = 0.049) and ischaemic heart disease (57 vs. 21%, p < 0.001), and had lower HDL cholesterol levels (0.39 vs. 0.53 g/L, p < 0.001). On MRI, SCCI was more frequent in the ICT group (25 vs. 5%, p = 0.006) in the absence of other differences in infarction localisation, number, size, or volume on MRI. On multivariate analysis, younger age (p < 0.001), history of ischaemic heart disease (p < 0.001), and low HDL cholesterol levels (p = 0.01) were significantly associated with ICT. Results approaching statistical significance were observed for SCCI (more frequent in the ICT group, p = 0.053) and non-SCCI (more frequent in the AF group, p = 0.053) on MRI. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência das ações realizadas pelo Programa de Educação pelo Trabalho (PET-Saúde) no trabalho e conhecimento em saúde bucal de Agentes Comunitários de Saúde (ACS). Método: Utilizou-se um instrumento de pesquisa validado para a análise da influência do conhecimento em saúde bucal dos ACS, em estudo transversal desenvolvido em dois distritos administrativos municipais (DAGUA e DASAC). Os dados obtidos foram analisados estatisticamente pelo SPSS. Resultados: Os ACS eram em maioria do sexo feminino com idade entre 30 a 39 anos e renda familiar de um a três salários, a maioria residia na comunidade há mais de seis anos e atuava na comunidade entre 1 e 3 anos, abrangendo cerca de 500 a 599 indivíduos nas suas microáreas. Observou-se que a maioria dos ACS não realizava atividade de educação em saúde bucal por não terem recebido capacitação para tal, com exceção dos ACS do distrito administrativo sob área de cobertura da Universidade Federal do Pará, onde o PET-Saúde se fez pertinente. Sobre o conhecimento em saúde bucal, os ACS dos distritos DAGUA e DASAC obtiveram nível moderado. Conclusões: O PET-Saúde proporcionou construção coletiva do conhecimento para os ACS retornando em mudanças positivas sobre o cuidado em saúde bucal para as comunidades. Percebeu-se maior nível de conhecimentos relacionados à saúde bucal entre os ACS do DAGUA, apesar de não ter havido grande diferença entre os distritos analisados. As atividades do PET deveriam ser incorporadas nos projetos pedagógicos, dos cursos de graduação e ter caráter de continuidade nas comunidades fortalecendo as ações de integração ensino-serviço-comunidade.


Objective: To evaluate the influence of actions carried out by the Work-Based Education Program (WBEP-Health) on oral health work and the knowledge of Community Health Workers (CHW). Method: A validated research instrument was used to analyze the influence of oral health knowledge on CHW in a cross-sectional study developed in two municipal administrative districts (DAGUA and DASAC). Results obtained were submitted to statistical analysis using SPSS. Results: CHW were mostly females, between 30 and 39 years old, with a family income of one to three years, the majority resided in the community for more than six years and used to work in the community for 1 to 3 years, covering about 500 to 599 individuals within their micro area. It was observed that the majority of the CHW did not perform oral health education activity, due to a lack of training, except for the CHW of administrative district under the coverage area of the Federal University of Pará, where the WBEP-Health made itself relevant. In relation to knowledge about oral health, the CHW of the districts DAGUA and DASAC were classified as moderate. Conclusions: WBEP-Health provided a collective construction of knowledge for CHW, resulting in positive changes in oral health care for communities. It was observed that the knowledge level in relation to oral health was greater in the CHW from the district DAGUA, even though the difference between districts was insignificant. WBEP activities should be incorporated into pedagogical projects, undergraduate courses with continued work within communities strengthening integrated teaching-service-community actions.

Fluoride (F) can induce changes in the expression of several liver proteins, most of them localized in the mitochondria and its effect is dose- and time-dependent. This study analyzed the effect of distinct F concentrations and exposure periods on the mitochondrial activity of complex I-III and II-III in the liver. Thirty-six 21-day-old male Wistar rats were divided into 2 groups (n = 18) according to the duration of the treatment (20 or 60 days). They were subdivided into 3 subgroups (n = 6) according to the concentration of F (0 mg/L, 15 mg/L or 50 mg/L). After the experimental periods, the animals were anesthetized, liver mitochondria were isolated and stored for activity analyses. The determination of complexes II-III and I-III was based on the reduction of cytochrome c3+ to cytochrome c2+ performed spectrophotometrically. Bioinformatics analyses were performed using data from a previous study (Pereira et al., 2018). The mitochondrial complex I-III was significantly activated in the groups treated with 50 mgF/L for 20 days and 15 mgF/L for 60 days. The complex II-III was significantly reduced in the group treated with the higher F dose for 60 days. The networks indicated more changes in mitochondrial proteins in the group treated with the higher dose for 20 days; the reduction is probably linked to the activation of the complex I-III. The reduction in the complex II-III upon exposure to the higher F dose in the long term might be part of an adaptative mechanism of the body to counteract the deleterious effects of this ion on the energy metabolism.

Radial oxygen loss is a physical phenomenon that occurs naturally in aquatic plants. Typha domingensis was chosen as a model plant because it possesses basic morphological characteristics, such as a stem (rhizome) that produces leaves and adventitious roots, which are present in many aquatic plants. This study aimed to evaluate the following: the relevance of the anatomy of T. domingensis on gas diffusion among organs; the influence of plant parts on radial oxygen loss; the role of catalase in radial oxygen loss; and the proposition of a novel explanation for the downward diffusion of oxygen through the organs of this aquatic macrophyte and into the environment. Typha domingensis plants were cultivated in a greenhouse under different conditions: plants with intact leaves, plants with leaves cut in half, and plants without leaves. Furthermore, we evaluated the percentage of aerenchyma in different vegetative organs, the minimum pressure required for radial oxygen loss, the daily variations of dissolved oxygen, and the roots' catalase activity. The results demonstrated that certain cellular features contributed to decreased oxygen diffusion among the organs, specifically, those found in the leaf-rhizome and root-rhizome interfaces as well as the suberin and lignin layers in these regions. Additionally, our experiments with a catalase activator and inhibitor validated that a significant amount of the oxygen released in radial oxygen loss could not, in fact, be exclusively supplied by the atmosphere. Thus, a complementary model is proposed in which catalase activity is an important component of radial oxygen loss.

ABSTRACT Caligo teucer (Linnaeus, 1758) is widely distributed in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Ecuador. The objective was to study biological aspects of Caligo teucer japetus Stichel, 1903 with banana leaves, Musa sapientium L. (Zingiberales: Musaceae), in the butterfly garden, under environmental conditions, and in the laboratory of biological control of insects at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa in Viçosa, Minas Gerais state, Brazil at 24 ± 2 oC, 68 ± 10% relative humidity and 12 hours photophase. The duration of the egg incubation, larvae, pupa and egg to adult periods of C. teucer japetus were, respectively, 11.8 ± 0.1; 53.9 ± 0.9; 17.9 ± 0.3 and 82.6 ± 1.0 days for females, and 11.8 ± 0.1; 50.3 ± 0.6; 18.4 ± 0.3 and 79.4 ± 0.6 days for males in cages in the laboratory. The longevity of C. teucer japetus adults was 26.0 ± 10.4 and 47.5 ± 8.7 for females and 24.7 ± 3.5 and 35.4 ± 15.7 for males in the butterfly garden and in laboratory cages, respectively. The high survival and the relatively short period of development of its immature stages confirm that banana leaves are an adequate food substrate for the development and survival of Caligo teucer japetus.

Abstract Health at school is the subject of relevant discussions on health promotion. This study aims to understand the reach of the actions resulting from the School Health Program in municipal public schools in Belem-PA, from the perspective of teachers. It is a descriptive-observational study, with analysis of interviews with 22 teachers of municipal public basic education. Field research took place from April to June 2018. A content analysis was carried out, proposed by Bardin, generating four thematic units. Of those interviewed, 50% were unaware of the referred program or the operation of it. It was possible to perceive different modes of interaction between the program's actuators, from the most punctual and inefficient to the most contextualized and integrative. The study of social health determinants is necessary to better understand the processes and needs of these actions in the municipal school environment, with emphasis on issues of basic sanitation, food insecurity, violence and drugs. There is a need for self-recognition of the teacher as a health educator, in order to make them intrinsic health promoters in their pedagogical practices. The school's articulation with the school community can serve as an input for greater integration and stimulation of social control practices.


Resumo A saúde na escola é tema de discussões relevantes no tocante à promoção da saúde. Este estudo objetiva compreender o alcance das ações resultantes do Programa Saúde na Escola em escolas públicas municipais de Belém-PA, na perspectiva dos professores. Trata-se de estudo descritivo-observacional, com análise de entrevistas com 22 professores da educação básica pública municipal. A pesquisa de campo ocorreu no período de abril a junho de 2018. Foi realizada análise de conteúdo, proposta por Bardin, gerando quatro unidades temáticas. Dos entrevistados, 50% desconheciam o referido programa ou seu funcionamento. Foi possível perceber diferentes modos de interação entre os realizadores das ações do programa, desde os mais pontuais e ineficientes aos mais contextualizados e integrativos. O estudo dos determinantes sociais de saúde se faz necessário para compreender melhor os processos e necessidades dessas ações no âmbito escolar municipal, com destaque para questões de saneamento básico, insegurança alimentar, violência e drogas. Há necessidade de autorreconhecimento do professor enquanto educador em saúde, a fim de torná-los intrínsecos promotores de saúde em suas práticas pedagógicas. A articulação da escola com a comunidade escolar pode servir de insumo para maior integração e estimulação das práticas de controle social.
