OBJECTIVES: While feline asthma (FA) is considered to be of allergic origin, the etiology of feline chronic bronchitis (CB) to date is unknown. Aim of the study was to compare the results of intradermal testing (IDT) and serum testing for allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (SAT) in cats diagnosed with FA and CB. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-seven client-owned cats with clinical signs, suggestive of feline inflammatory bronchial disease (FBD) were prospectively enrolled in the study. Patients were assigned to 3 groups based on results of bronchoalveolar-lavage-fluid (BALF)-cytology: FA (n=8), CB (n=10), or cats with a physiological BALF cytology (PB; n=9). A standardized IDT for 27 allergens was performed in all cats. In addition, allergen-specific IgE was measured in serum samples using an FcεRIα-ELISA. The number of positive reactions in both tests was compared between groups, and agreement between test results of both tests was evaluated. RESULTS: Regarding the number of positive reactions, no statistically significant difference was detected between groups in IDT (p=0.65) and SAT (p=0.51). When comparing the 2 test systems, a weak correlation was found for the allergens Tyrophagus putrescentiae (k=0.256), Dermatophagoides farinae (k=0.276), and rye (k=0.273). The most commonly observed reactions were to house dust mites, storage mites, rye and nettle in IDT and to sheep sorrel, storage mites, and house dust mites in SAT. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: IDT and SAT in cats with feline inflammatory bronchial disease (FBD) cannot be used interchangeably for allergen detection. Sensitization to environmental allergens can occur in cats with and without airway inflammation. Therefore, a positive test result should always be assessed in context with clinical signs and allergen exposure.

Critical weight loss, as defined by ≥5% decrease in body weight, has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in human patients with cancers of the head and neck. Weight loss has anecdotally been reported to occur frequently in veterinary patients undergoing radiation therapy and is hypothesized to be more severe in patients with cancers of the head and neck, along with those hospitalized during radiation therapy. The primary objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the occurrence of critical weight loss in canine cancer bearing patients undergoing either definitive or palliative radiation protocols and to determine if weight changes were associated with radiation toxicity, tumour location or patient hospitalization status. Data from 47 dogs who underwent definitive and 43 dogs who underwent palliative radiation protocols at the University of Tennessee were included for analysis. Dogs were categorized based on tumour location (head/neck or other), hospitalization status (boarded or non-boarded) and radiation toxicity score. Weight recorded at the start of treatment, midway through treatment and at the final treatment was used for analysis. No significant differences were found in regard to weight change over time, location or hospitalization status when evaluated for both protocols. Overall, 5/90 dogs (5.5%) lost 5% or more of their body weight during therapy, and 7/90 dogs (7.7%) gained 5% or more of their body weight. The results of the current study suggest that critical weight loss occurs in a small percentage of canine patients undergoing radiation therapy, contrary to what is often anecdotally reported.

A 10 yr old castrated male pug was presented with a 3 day history of intermittent dyspnea, cough, inappetence, and inability to breathe while sleeping. He had previously received hypofractionated radiation therapy for an amelanotic oral malignant melanoma (OMM) 7 mo prior to presentation. At presentation, the dog was gasping and dyspneic. Oral examination identified the OMM on the right hard palate. Thoracic radiographs revealed an angular soft-tissue opacity within the trachea just distal to the thoracic inlet. No evidence of pulmonary metastatic disease was seen. Tracheoscopy identified a pedunculated, nonpigmented mass within the lumen of the distal trachea near the carina. Treatment options were presented to the owners and included tracheal stenting or tracheal resection and anastomosis. Because of the poor prognosis, the owners elected humane euthanasia. Postmortem examination confirmed the presence of melanoma in the distal trachea; no other sites of OMM metastasis were identified. The cause of OMM development in the distal trachea in this case is suspected to have resulted from mechanical tumor cell seeding during endotracheal tube placement for general anesthesia 7 mo prior to presentation. Despite the reported rarity of mechanical tumor seeding, this potential complication warrants consideration in dogs with OMM.

Precise and accurate patient positioning is necessary when doing stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) to ensure adequate dosing to the tumor and sparing of normal tissues. This prospective cross-sectional study aimed to assess feasibility of a commercially available modified frameless SRS positioning system for use in veterinary radiotherapy patients with brain tumors. Fifty-one dogs and 12 cats were enrolled. Baseline and verification CT images were acquired. The verification CT images from 32 dogs and five cats had sufficient images for fusion to baseline CT images. A rigid box-based fusion was performed to determine interfraction motion. Forty-eight dogs and 11 cats were assessed for intrafraction motion by cine CT. Seventy percent of dogs and 60% of cats had interfraction 3D vector translational shifts >1 mm, with mean values of 1.9 mm in dogs, and 1.8 mm in cats. In dogs muscle wasting was weakly correlated with translational shifts. The maximum angular interfraction motion observed was 6.3° (roll), 3.5° (pitch), and 3.3° (yaw). There was no correlation between angular interfraction motion and weight, brachycephaly, or muscle wasting. Fifty-seven percent of dogs and 50% of cats had respiration-related intrafraction motion. Of these, 4.5% of dogs and 10% of cats had intrafraction motion >1 mm. This study demonstrates the modified Brainlab system is feasible for SRS in dogs and cats. The smaller cranial size and difference in anatomy increases setup uncertainty in some animals beyond limits usually accepted in SRS. Image-guided positioning is recommended to achieve clinically acceptable setup accuracy (<1 mm) for SRS.
