RESUMO

Recently, metal halide perovskite-based top cells have shown significant potential for use in inexpensive and high-performance tandem solar cells. In state-of-the-art p-i-n perovskite/Si tandem devices, atomic-layer-deposited SnO2 has been widely used as a buffer layer in the top cells because it enables conformal, pinhole-free, and highly transparent buffer layer formation. In this work, the effects of various electrical properties of SnO2 and C60 layers on the carrier transport characteristics and the performance of the final devices were investigated using a numerical simulation method, which was established based on real experimental data to increase the validity of the model. It was found that the band alignment at the SnO2/C60 interface does, indeed, have a significant impact on the electron transport. In addition, as a general design rule, it was suggested that at first, the conduction band offset (CBO) between C60 and SnO2 should be chosen so as not to be too negative. However, even in a case in which this CBO condition is not met, we would still have the means to improve the electron transport characteristics by increasing the doping density of at least one of the two layers of C60 and/or SnO2, which would enhance the built-in potential across the perovskite layer and the electron extraction at the C60/SnO2 interface.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to develop the economic and effective buffer system for microalgae mass cultivation using industrial flue gas. Due to the continuous flue gas supplement, culture media acidified, therefore cell growth inhibited. Although buffering agent was added, this result increase in cost for overall culture process. Therefore combined buffer system of bicarbonate and phosphate (BP) for large-scale use was investigated. The bicarbonate buffer system generated from CO2 dissolution, additionally phosphate buffer system improves the buffer performance under the continuous CO2 supplementation from flue gas. The microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis was cultivated under autotrophic outdoor conditions using these buffer solutions. As a result, the autotrophic BP buffer system enhanced the biomass and astaxanthin productivity of H. pluvialis to 105% and 103%, respectively. The results confirm that the BP buffer system reduces the cost of microalgal CO2 conversion process, particularly for the outdoor mass cultivation.

RESUMO

The aim of this work was to develop a high efficient photobioreactor for increasing biomass and lipid production in microalgae by assessment of the hydrodynamic properties and kLa which are important parameters for improving the algal cultivation efficiency. We designed three different photobioreactors (H-Shape, X-Shape and serial-column). Among them, X-Shape showed the highest hydrodynamic properties and kLa for algal cultivation. Thus, we evaluated the biomass and the lipid production in a 20L scale-up X-Shape photobioreactor. The biomass and lipid production from X-Shape photobioreactor are 1.359±0.007gL-1 and 117.624±3.522mgL-1, respectively; which are 30.05% and 23.49% higher than those from the control photobioreactor. Finally, we observed the lipid from X-Shape had high MUFAs, CN and low IV, which is suitable for high quality of biodiesel, suggesting that it can be practicably utilized for mass production of algal biofuel.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome after a Norwood operation show dilatation and reduced distensibility of the reconstructed proximal aorta. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) and angiographic examinations indicate that the native descending aorta (DAo) is also dilated, but this has not been studied in detail. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-nine children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome in Fontan circulation (aged 6.3±3.2 years) and 18 control participants (aged 6.8±2.4 years) underwent 3.0-tesla CMR. Gradient-echo cine and phase-contrast imaging was applied to measure cross-sectional areas (CSAs), distensibility, pulse wave velocity, and the incremental elastic modulus of the thoracic aorta. CSA of the DAo in patients was also compared with published percentiles for aortic CSA. Patients had significantly larger CSA of the DAo at the level of pulmonary artery bifurcation (229.1±97.2 versus 175.7±24.3 mm/m(2), P=0.04) and the diaphragm (196.2±66.0 versus 142.6±16.7 mm/m(2), P<0.01). In 41 patients (52%), CSA of the DAo was >95th percentile level for control participants, and the incremental elastic modulus of the aortic arch and the DAo was higher than in patients with normal CSAs (arch: 90.1±64.3 versus 45.6±38.9 m/s; DAo: 86.3±53.7 versus 47.1±47.6 m/s; P<0.01). Incremental elastic modulus of the aortic arch and the DAo correlated with the CSA of the DAo (arch: r=0.5; DAo: r=0.49; P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome frequently show dilatation of their DAo associated with increased stiffness of the aortic arch. Higher aortic impedance increases the afterload of the systemic circulation and likely contributes to the burden of the systemic right ventricle.

RESUMO

Current recommendations advocate self-measurement of blood pressure (SMBP) for the diagnosis and monitoring of high blood pressure (HBP). The "PEA" is an education program of the HTA GWAD network. Its mission is to train hypertensive patients with SMBP. The objective of this study is to evaluate between 6 months to 1 year after the efficiency of this program on the theoretical and practical knowledge of patients, as well as their behavior towards hypertension. Hundred and twenty patients were included in the study. In an interview, their knowledge was assessed using a questionnaire. The acquisition of the technique, reading and figures transcription, purchase of a SMBP device were also evaluated. The average questionnaire score was 5.7/13 (σ=2.7) before the educational session, 9.5/13 (σ=1.9) 1 week after the educational session. This improvement persisted over time with 8.9/13 (σ=2.9) correct answers 6 months to 1 year later. Exactly 73.3% (n=88/120) had a self-measurement device. Among them, 44.3% (n=39/88) practiced SMBP before medical consultations and 10% systematically did it before each medical consultation. A number of 84.2% (n=101/120) mastered the technique and 76.7% (n=92/120) of patients knew how to transcribe figures. Reading and understanding figures were acquired by 61.7% (n=74/120) of patients. A high level of education was correlated with a high level of practice. PEA is a sustainable solid and stable education program. However, the practice of SMBP is not yet systematic and remains to be encouraged in some patients. Given this situation, the network offers improvements in its program: highlighting of objectives, calendar reminder, "coaching" nurse.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Matrix P® and Matrix P plus® tissue-engineered pulmonary valves (TEPV) were offered as an improvement for pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) because of recellularization by host cells. The high frequency of graft failure gave reason to evaluate the underlying morphological substrate using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histology. METHODS: Between June 2006 and August 2008, 17 Matrix P® and 10 Matrix P plus® TEPVs were implanted in 26 patients with a median age of 12.4 (range: 0.8-38.7, interquartile range: 6.1-18.1) years. The grafts were studied by MRI, and underwent histological examination when explantation was required. RESULTS: Surgical (n = 13) or transcatheter (n = 1) TEPV replacement because of graft failure was needed in 14 cases (52%) 19 (0.5-53) months after implantation. MRI detected significant TEPV stenosis with mild insufficiency (V(max) = 3.7 ± (standard deviation) 0.5 m/s, regurgitant fraction (RGF) = 10 ± 3%) and stenosis with moderate-to-severe insufficiency (V(max) = 3.5 ± 0.8 m/s, RGF = 38 ± 10%) in 6 patients, respectively, and severe insufficiency (RGF = 40%) in 1 patient. In patients with graft failure, MRI showed hyperenhancement and TEPV wall thickening. Histology revealed severe inflammation, increased fibrous tissue and foreign-body reaction against valve leaflets and fascial tissue, while TEPV endothelialization was not detected in any case. CONCLUSIONS: The high frequency of Matrix P® and Matrix P plus® graft failure can be related to inflammation and fibrosis revealed by MRI and histology. Our results do not support the use of these valves for PVR and suggest careful follow-up examinations, including MRI for early detection of graft inflammation and fibrosis.
