RESUMO

Ten state wildlife management agencies in the United States, including six within the Southeast, have delayed their spring wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) hunting seasons since 2017 by five or more days to address concerns related to the potential effects of hunting on wild turkey seasonal productivity. One hypothesis posits that if the spring hunting season is too early, there may be insufficient time for males to breed hens before being harvested, thus leading to reduced seasonal productivity. We conducted an experiment to determine whether delaying the wild turkey hunting season by 2 weeks in south-middle Tennessee would affect various reproductive rates. In 2021 and 2022, the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission experimentally delayed the spring hunting season to open 14 days later than the traditional date (the Saturday closest to 1 April) in Giles, Lawrence, and Wayne counties. We monitored reproductive rates from 2017 to 2022 in these three counties as well as two adjacent counties, Bedford and Maury, that were not delayed. We used a Before-After-Control-Impact design to analyze the proportion of hens nesting, clutch size, hatchability, nest success, poult survival and hen survival with linear mixed-effect models and AIC model selection to detect relationships between the 14-day delay and reproductive parameters. We detected no relationship (p > .05) between the 14-day delay and any individual reproductive parameter. In addition, recruitment (hen poults per hen that survived until the next breeding season) was very low (<0.5) and did not increase because of the 14-day delay. The traditional Tennessee start date had been in place since 1986 while the turkey harvest increased markedly until about 2006 and more recently stabilized. Our data indicate that moving the start of the hunting season from a period just prior to peak nest initiation to 2 weeks later, to coincide with a period just prior to peak nest incubation initiation, resulted in no change to productivity or populations in wild turkey flocks in south-middle Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: Recognition of clinically deteriorating hospitalized patients with activation of rapid response (RR) systems can prevent patient harm. Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP), however, experience less benefit from RR systems than do their English-speaking counterparts. OBJECTIVE: To improve outcomes among hospitalized LEP patients experiencing clinical deteriorations. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental pre-post design using quality improvement (QI) statistics. PARTICIPANTS: All adult hospitalized non-intensive care patients with LEP who were admitted to a large academic medical center from May 2021 through March 2023 and experienced RR system activation were included in the evaluation. All patients included after May 2022 were exposed to the intervention. INTERVENTIONS: Implementation of a modified RR system for LEP patients in May 2022 that included electronic dashboard monitoring of early warning scores (EWSs) based on electronic medical record data; RR nurse initiation of consults or full RR system activation; and systematic engagement of interpreters. MAIN MEASURES: Process of care measures included monthly rates of RR system activation, critical response nurse consultations, and disease severity scores prior to activation. Main outcomes included average post-RR system activation length of stay, escalation of care, and in-hospital mortality. Analyses used QI statistics to identify special cause variation in pre-post control charts based on monthly data aggregates. KEY RESULTS: In total, 222 patients experienced at least one RR system activation during the study period. We saw no special cause variation for process measures, or for length of hospitalization or escalation of care. There was, however, special cause variation in mortality rates with an overall pre-post decrease in average monthly mortality from 7.42% (n = 8/107) to 6.09% (n = 7/115). CONCLUSIONS: In this pilot study, prioritized tracking, utilization of EWS-triggered evaluations, and interpreter integration into the RR system for LEP patients were feasible to implement and showed promise for reducing post-RR system activation mortality.

Hydralazine-induced anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) vasculitis may occur any time after hydralazine initiation. General internists should recognize diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) as a rare complication of this condition, as early treatment reduces the associated high risk of mortality. We describe the case of an 82-year-old female with diastolic heart failure who presented with a one-month history of worsening dyspnea on exertion and a one-week history of scant hemoptysis and fatigue. Her medications included aspirin and hydralazine. She was hypoxic with bilateral expiratory wheezes on exam. Labs showed new anemia, elevated creatinine, proteinuria, and hematuria. Chest computed tomography showed asymmetric bilateral upper lobe ground-glass attenuation superimposed on interlobular septal thickening and intralobular lines. Further testing showed anti-nuclear antibody, positive ANCA, perinuclear ANCA (p-ANCA), and anti-myeloperoxidase ANCA (anti-MPO-ANCA). Renal biopsy revealed MPO-ANCA, pauci-immune, necrotizing, and crescentic glomerulonephritis. She was diagnosed with DAH secondary to hydralazine-induced ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). Hydralazine is an anti-hypertensive medication with known potential for autoimmune reactions. Of these, AAV is a rare sequela mediated by anti-MPO and most commonly affects the kidneys. In rare circumstances, patients with AAV can develop pulmonary-renal syndrome, resulting in both glomerulonephritis and DAH with an associated high risk of mortality. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion in patients with acute kidney injury of unclear etiology. Early diagnosis through immune work-up and kidney biopsy should be pursued, as prompt recognition of the vasculitis, cessation of hydralazine, immunosuppression, and early plasma exchange are essential to an improved prognosis.

BACKGROUND Food insecurity describes the lack of adequate and reliable access to food due to insufficient resources. The condition affects over one-quarter of the world's population and is exacerbated by factors such as conflicts, climate variability, rising costs of nutritious food, and economic slumps; these challenges are amplified by poverty and inequality. Food insecurity is associated with many negative health outcomes, such as iron deficiency anemia, poor oral health, and stunting of growth in children. CASE REPORT We present the case of a patient who had significant weight loss related to food insecurity then developed a rare adverse health outcome: superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome. SMA syndrome is a condition in which reduction in the angle formed by the proximal SMA and aorta, most commonly from decreased mesenteric fat in the setting of significant weight loss, leads to compression of the third portion of the duodenum and resulting bowel obstruction. The patient underwent successful treatment with a novel approach: endoscopic placement of a gastrojejunostomy stent. CONCLUSIONS Food insecurity remains a wide-ranging public health issue that can have direct impact on the clinical outcomes of individuals. We describe SMA syndrome as a rare adverse outcome in a food insecure individual, adding to the growing list of health consequences associated with this condition. We also highlight endoscopic placement of a gastrojejunostomy stent as an emerging alternative to surgical treatment of SMA syndrome. The success of the procedure in this patient adds to the body of evidence supporting its efficacy and safety profile for this population.

Two experiments were conducted to examine mental rotation in 6- to 12-month-old infants (N = 166) using a change detection task. These experiments were replications of Lauer and Lourenco (Lauer et al., 2015; Lauer & Lourenco, 2016), using identical stimuli and variations of their procedure, including an exact replication conducted in a laboratory setting (Experiment 1), and an online assessment using Lookit (Scott et al.,2017; Scott & Schulz, 2017) (Experiment 2). Both experiments failed to replicate the results of the original study; in neither experiment did infants' behavior provide evidence that they mentally rotated the object. Results are discussed in terms of the robustness of mental rotation in infancy and about limits in our experimental procedures for uncovering perceptual and cognitive abilities in infants.

BACKGROUND: High levels of multidimensional perfectionism may be dysfunctional in their own right and can also impact on the maintenance and treatment of Axis I psychiatric disorders. AIMS: This paper sought to describe the behavioural expressions and imagery associated with perfectionism in a non-clinical sample. METHOD: Participants (n = 59) completed a newly developed questionnaire to assess behavioural expressions of perfectionism, and an adapted interview to assess perfectionism-related intrusive mental images. RESULTS: The study found that those high in perfectionism took longer to complete tasks, experienced more checking and safety behaviour whilst carrying out tasks, and had greater trouble actually completing tasks compared to those low in perfectionism. In addition, those with higher levels of perfectionism experienced intrusive mental imagery, which was more distressing, harder to dismiss, and had more impact on behaviour than those with lower levels of perfectionism. CONCLUSIONS: This research provides an initial exploration of the specific behaviours and intrusive mental imagery associated with perfectionism. The new behavioural measure of perfectionism could prove useful clinically in the assessment of change; however, these findings are preliminary and warrant replication in a clinical sample in order to examine their treatment implications.

G protein-coupled receptor kinase-interactor 2 (GIT2) is a signaling scaffold protein that also functions as GTPase-activating protein (GAPs) for ADP-ribosylation factor (Arf) small GTP-binding proteins. GIT2 has been implicated in the regulation of G protein-coupled receptor trafficking and cell adhesion and migration. To evaluate possible neurobehavioral functions of GIT2 in vivo, we evaluated GIT2-knockout (KO) mice for abnormalities in emotionality and mood. Male and female GIT2-KO mice presented with anxiety-like behaviors in the zero-maze and light-dark emergence tests. Immobility times in tail suspension were reduced in GIT2-KO males, but were normal in GIT2-KO females. Hence, GIT2-KO mice display anxiety-like behavior in an absence of depressive-like responses.

P311 is an 8-kDa protein that is expressed in many brain regions, particularly the hippocampus, cerebellum and olfactory lobes, and is under stringent regulation by developmental, mitogenic and other physiological stimuli. P311 is thought to be involved in the transformation and motility of neural cells; however, its role in normal brain physiology is undefined. To address this point, P311-deficient mice were developed through gene targeting and their behaviors were characterized. Mutants displayed no overt abnormalities, bred normally and had normal survival rates. Additionally, no deficiencies were noted in motor co-ordination, balance, hearing or olfactory discrimination. Nevertheless, P311-deficient mice showed altered behavioral responses in learning and memory. These included impaired responses in social transmission of food preference, Morris water maze and contextual fear conditioning. Additionally, mutants displayed altered emotional responses as indicated by decreased freezing in contextual and cued fear conditioning and reduced fear-potentiated startle. Together, these data establish P311 as playing an important role in learning and memory processes and emotional responses.

The vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) is localized primarily within the CNS and is responsible for transporting monoamines from the cytoplasm into secretory vesicles. Because reserpine (a VMAT inhibitor) can precipitate depressive-like symptoms in humans, we investigated whether Vmat2 heterozygous (HET) mice present with depressive-like behaviors. The mutants showed locomotor and rearing retardation in the open field and appeared anhedonic to 1 and 1.5% sucrose solutions. Immobility times for Vmat2 heterozygotes were prolonged in forced swim and imipramine normalized this behavior. HET animals also showed enhanced immobility in tail suspension and this response was alleviated by fluoxetine, reboxetine, and bupropion. Stimulated GTPgammaS binding indicated that alpha2-adrenergic receptors in HET hippocampus were more sensitive to UK 14,304 (5-bromo-N-(4,5-dihydro-1-H-imidazol-2-yl)-6-quinoxalinamine) stimulation than in wild type (WT) mice. In learned helplessness, mice were exposed to a shuttle box for 4 d or were given inescapable foot-shocks for the same time period. On day 5, all animals were tested in shock escape. Failure rates and the latency to escape were similar for WT and HET mice that were only pre-exposed to the test apparatus. In foot-shock groups, learned helplessness was more robust in heterozygotes than in WT controls. Basal secretion of serum corticosterone was not distinguished by genotype; however, corticosterone levels in mutants were more responsive to stress. Anxiety-like responses of WT and HET animals in the open field, light-dark exploration, zero maze, and novelty-suppressed feeding tests were indistinguishable. Collectively, these findings suggest that Vmat2 heterozygotes display a depressive-like phenotype that is devoid of anxiety-like behavior.
