RESUMO

The activity of imipenem against Pseudomonas aeruginosa HUS-3 decreased by 16 times in the presence of substances eluted from siliconized latex urinary catheters (SLUCs). SLUCs did not inactivate imipenem or increase beta-lactamase activity. The outer membrane of P. aeruginosa HUS-3 grown in the presence of eluate lacked an OprD-like protein and expressed a new 50-kDa protein. The decreased activity of imipenem against P. aeruginosa in the presence of SLUCs is related to the loss of an OprD-like protein and the expression of a new outer membrane protein.

RESUMO

Optic nerve hypoplasia is an important malformation of the fetal alcohol syndrome whose teratogenic mechanisms are unknown. In our experimental model we have quantified the concentration of ethanol and acetaldehyde in the retina and vitreous humor of the developing chick. The effect of ethanol alone during retinal development was analyzed by conventional histological techniques and by immunostaining. A single injection of ethanol in the vitelline sac at the beginning of retinal cell differentiation retarded synaptogenesis in the inner plexiform layer and produced abundant ganglion cell death and a sharp diminution of myelinic axons. Our observations could help to explain certain alterations described in children exposed to ethanol during the development of their nervous system.

RESUMO

Inasmuch as Sudan black B stain is highly specific for myeloid cells and since over 3% positive blast cells meet the needs of diagnosis for myeloblastic leukaemias, we had the opportunity to study a 27 year-old male with acute leukaemia whose morphological, cytochemical, immunocytochemical (HLA-DR, CD-10, CD-19, CD-20, CD-21 all positive) and ultrastructural features were clearly in accordance with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, except for 42% Sudan black B positivity of the bone marrow blast cells. The practical interest of this case comes from the necessity to take this rare ALL case into account.
