RESUMO

The article deals with the integrated and comprehensive study of the coal-bearing horizons from the South Karanpura Basin to delineate the biostratigraphy, palaeovegetation, palaeodepositional settings, and palaeoclimate in and around the investigated area during the deposition of Permian sediments. Highly diversified megafloral assemblages consist 13 genera and 72 species of order Glossopteridales, Cordaitales and Equisetales are documented among which 37 taxa are newly reported from Barakar and Raniganj formations of the area. Palynoassemblages-I and -II are recovered, which demonstrate the biostratigraphic age as Kungurian and Wordian-Capitanian, respectively. Overall the vegetation represents a luxuriant forest subjugated by arborescent deciduous trees bearing Glossopteris foliage with some conifers, cordaites, filicales, and peltaspermales. The biomarker study of the basin illustrates the unimodal distribution of n-alkanes in the sample set ranges from C14 to C29 which suggests major input from a single source of organic matter. The involvement of microbial activity and algal input is suggested for the basin. A relatively moderate-to-high water level condition can be inferred from elevated n-C25. The high CIA, PIA values and A-CN-K plot suggest intense weathering conditions in the source area. The source rocks are characterized by mature clayey type with abundant clay mineral, i.e., kaolinite. The current study portrays that the Permian climate was cooler in initial phase, which later on became warm temperate with high humidity. The palaeofloral entities and geochemical parameters suggest absolute diversification of Permian flora, the existence of continental freshwater setting in the vicinity and oxic to anoxic environment with fluctuating ground water conditions during the deposition of sediments.

The growing demand for electricity has increased the interest of the researchers towards exploration of energy storing devices (ESDs). With the motif for developing electrochemical energy storage devices, this research work is focussed on the study of MoO3 nanoparticles and its doping with chromium as an efficient electrode material for energy storage applications. The nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal method and were examined by powder X-ray diffraction, which determined the thermodynamically stable orthorhombic phase of MoO3, and their morphologies were examined using scanning electron microscopy displaying flake-like structures. The typical vibrational bands of Mo-O were identified from Infra-red and Raman spectral analysis. The ultra violet diffuse reflectance spectra revealed the decrease in optical band gap after doping with chromium. The temperature dependent AC and DC conductivities were enhanced on doping. Electrochemical behaviour of the nanoparticles was probed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) analysis for which specific capacitance (C sp) value of 334 Fg-1 was achieved for Cr-doped MoO3 nanoparticles. The electrochemical performance of the sample was found to be increased after doping with Cr.

BACKGROUND: The acute vascular disease deep vein thrombosis (DVT) requires oral anticoagulants to prevent progression. Monitoring therapeutic efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC), including rivaroxaban, is problematic as no reliable test is available. Advances in rheometry have led to the development of a functional coagulation biomarker using Gel Point (GP) analysis which assesses clot structure formation. The biomarker measures incipient clot formation time (TGP) and quantifies fibrin clot structure in terms of fractal dimension (df). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate clot structure formation in first time DVT and the effect of rivaroxaban treatment. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study measured the GP and standard laboratory markers at three sample points: pre-treatment and at 20 and 60 days following 15 mg BD and 20 mg OD rivaroxaban respectively. RESULTS: Forty DVT patients (mean age 64 years [SD±14.8]; 23 males, 17 female) were recruited. The results show that DVT vs non-DVT patients did not have a significantly different GP profile (df: 1.72±0.06 vs 1.70±0.06 and TGP: 267±68 sec vs 262±73 sec) with both within the defined healthy index. In addition, rivaroxaban therapy increased TGP to 392 s (±135 s) after 20 days, and subsequently increased to 395 s (±194 s) at 60 days but did not significantly increase df (from 1.69±0.05 to 1.71±0.06). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate in this cohort of DVT patients there was no underlying hypercoagulable effect as determined by gel point analysis. Furthermore, the anticoagulant effect of rivaroxaban prolonged clotting, suggesting a protective effect against clot formation, without significantly reducing clot microstructural properties.

Poor maternal nutrition during gestation can negatively affect offspring growth, development, and health. Leptin and ghrelin, key hormones in energy homeostasis and appetite control, may mediate these changes. We hypothesized that restricted- and over-feeding during gestation would alter plasma concentrations of leptin and ghrelin in ewes and offspring. Pregnant ewes (n = 37) were fed 1 of 3 diets starting on d 30 ± 0.02 of gestation until necropsy at d 135 of gestation or parturition: restricted- [RES; 60% National Research Council (NRC) requirements for total digestible nutrients, n = 13], control- (CON; 100% NRC, n = 11), or over-fed (OVER; 140% NRC, n = 13). Blood samples were collected from pregnant ewes at days 20, 30, 44, 72, 100, 128, and 142 of gestation. Offspring blood samples were collected within 24 h after birth (n = 21 CON, 25 RES, 23 OVER). Plasma leptin and ghrelin concentrations were determined by RIA. Ewe data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure in SAS with ewe as the repeated subject. Offspring data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure. Correlations between BW and leptin and ghrelin concentrations were identified using PROC CORR. At d 100, RES (5.39 ± 2.58 ng/mL) had decreased leptin concentrations compared with OVER (14.97 ± 2.48 ng/mL; P = 0.008) and at d 128, RES (6.39 ± 2.50 ng/mL) also had decreased leptin concentrations compared with OVER (13.61 ± 2.47 ng/mL; P = 0.04). At d 142, RES (0.26 ± 0.04 ng/mL) had increased ghrelin concentrations compared with CON (0.15 ± 0.04 ng/mL; P = 0.04). Leptin and ghrelin concentrations were also altered between days of gestation within a dietary treatment. In CON ewes, plasma concentrations of leptin were increased at d 30 (19.28 ± 7.43 ng/mL) compared with d 44 (5.20 ± 3.10 ng/mL; P = 0.03), and the plasma concentrations of ghrelin at d 128 (0.20 ± 0.03 ng/mL) were increased compared with d 30 (0.16 ± 0.03 ng/mL; P = 0.01) and d 100 (0.17 ± 0.03 ng/mL; P = 0.04). Maternal diet did not alter plasma ghrelin or leptin concentrations in the offspring (P > 0.50). There were no strong, significant correlations between ewe BW and leptin (r < 0.33; P > 0.06) or ghrelin (r > -0.47; P > 0.001) concentrations or lamb BW and leptin or ghrelin concentrations (r > -0.32, P > 0.06). Maternal alterations in circulating leptin and ghrelin may program changes in energy balance that could result in increased adiposity in adult offspring. Alterations in energy homeostasis may be a mechanism behind the long-lasting changes in growth, body composition, development, and metabolism in the offspring of poorly nourished ewes.

Trachysalambria aspera (Alcock, 1905) was first reported and described in detail by Alcock (1905) as Trachypeaneus asper Alcock, 1905, from the Ganjam coast (Odisha, India) and Andaman Sea. Chan et al. (2016) revised the species under the genus Trachysalambria based on molecular genetic data and resolved the confusion in their taxonomy in literature. However, they could not examine the types of T. aspera due to their non-availability (Chan et al. 2016). So we discuss the characters of the species based on the photograph of the type specimen from the Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata with that of Chan et al. (2016) and also with the specimens collected from southwest coast of India where the species has not been reported earlier, but only Trachysalambria curvirostris (George, 1967). Earlier, among Trachysalambria species, T. curvirostris was reported from both the east (Bay of Bengal) and west coasts (Arabian Sea) of Indian waters (Kunju, 1960; George, 1967; Muthu, 1971; Thomas, 1976). Chan et al. (2016) states that T. curvirostris may have a restricted distribution to northern Pacific Ocean.

Time average digital holography under random excitation or square wave excitation is established as an on-site non-destructive testing tool for defect detection in large metallic and composite sandwich structures due to its high sensitivity, single exposure interferogram, and fast inspection capability. However, extensive calibration studies are necessary to corroborate the defect type and defect size with the excitation frequency range and excitation magnitude. In this paper, a method to simulate a time average digital holographic fringe pattern under random excitation is proposed with the idea to minimize the number of calibration experiments and also for better evaluation of the size and type of defect. The proposed method circumvents the requirement for a closed form expression for the complex characteristic fringe function for time average interferometry under random excitation. The computed fringe pattern is illustratively compared with an experimental time average digital holographic fringe pattern.

Cherry rusty mottle-associated virus (CRMaV), which belongs the genus Robigovirus of the family Betaflexiviridae, is strongly associated with cherry rusty mottle disease of sweet cherry, Prunus avium. Here, we report on the successful development of an Agrobacterium-based inoculation system for a cloned CRMaV cDNA construct. Agro-inoculation of virus-free cherry rootstock 'Krymsk6' [P. cerasus x (P. cerasus x P. maackii)] resulted in the development of chlorotic yellow mottle symptoms on systemic leaves beginning at 50 days post inoculation. The presence of CRMaV in 'Krymsk6' agro-inoculated plants was confirmed by RT-PCR and ELISA. Subsequently, CRMaV from agro-inoculated 'Krymsk6' was graft-transmissible onto virus-free sweet cherry rootstock P. avium 'Mazzard' as evidenced by the production of typical cherry rusty mottle symptoms beginning at 35 days post grafting, and further confirmed by western blotting and RT-PCR. These results showed conclusively that CRMaV is the causal agent of cherry rusty mottle disease in sweet cherry. The reverse genetic system presented in this study can be used as a tool to investigate the molecular biology of CRMaV and also a template for infectious clone development for other viruses in the genus Robigovirus.

This article reviews the types of common hand infections that present to the emergency department and/or hand surgeon, with relevant investigations and strategies for diagnosis and treatment, with the emphasis on distinguishing between superficial and more serious infections.

RESUMO

This article provides a comprehensive overview of hand tendon injuries. It has been tailored towards healthcare professionals who will be the first to assess these injuries and instigate appropriate management. It discusses the essential hand anatomy to be aware of, how to assess tendon injuries, their initial management and also the definitive surgical interventions used, if required. Rehabilitation techniques are also discussed, as this is also key to good functional outcomes. Missed injuries, or delay in their diagnosis and referral to specialist hand surgeons, can cause a large amount of morbidity for patients and therefore it is important that they are picked up in a timely manner.

We study the surface pressure data exhibiting the underlying dynamical behavior of the flow transition over the upper surface of the aerofoil by using recurrence quantification analysis (RQA). In this study, NACA 2415 aerofoil subjected to a turbulent inflow of TI=8.46% at various angles of attack ranging from α=0° to 20° with an increment of 5° corresponding to Re=2.0×105 is considered. We show that the values of recurrence quantification measures effectively distinguish the underlying dynamics of time series surface pressure data at each port, which proves RQA as an effective tool in accurately predicting the flow transitions.

OBJECTIVES: The advent of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) has revealed high rates of sustained virological response at 12 weeks (SVR 12) in Hepatitis C (HCV) treatment. Since the introduction of DAAs, in our centre, 42% of patients treated for HCV are HIV co-infected. Our study aimed to identify the SVR 12 rates between this group and HCV mono-infected patients. METHODS: Retrospective data analysis of HCV mono-infection and HIV-HCV co-infection patients between 1st July 2015 and 30th November 2018, who had a SVR at 12 weeks post treatment. Co-infected patients were only referred for HCV treatment if they had well controlled HIV. Patients treated with Pegylated Interferon and Ribavirin were excluded. RESULTS: During this period, 724 patients were treated for HCV and had data on SVR 12. Of those, 303 (41.8%) were co-infected with HIV. The SVR 12 was achieved in 386 (91.6%) of the HIV negative patients and 288 (95%) of the HIV positive patients (χ²= 3.10 p = 0.078). Cirrhotic patients had poorer SVR 12 in both groups (90% in co-infection and 88.4% in HCV mono-infection). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate a higher SVR 12 in co-infected patients compared to patients with HCV mono-infection. We hypothesise that adherence to HIV treatment could increase compliance and success of HCV treatment.

RESUMO

Here we report a new record of the caridean shrimp Lysmatella prima Borradaile, 1915 in the Arabian Sea off southwest coast of India. L. prima is the only known species under the genus Lysmatella (Borradaile, 1915). The species was recorded a century back from the Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal. During a survey in our research vessel, a single specimen obtained from a depth of 30 m (9o25'72" N 76o12'77" E) is described and illustrated with photographs. This record extends the known distribution of the species in the Indo Pacific region.

The aim of this study was to document differences in hypernasality during speaking and singing among children with cleft palate and to compare nasality score ratings of trained and untrained listeners. Twenty subjects with cleft palate aged between 7 and 12 years participated in this study. Audio recordings were made of the children reading a passage and singing a common local song, both in the Malay language. The degree of hypernasality was judged through perceptual assessment. Three trained listeners (a speech therapist, a classical singer, and a linguistic expert - all academicians) and two untrained listeners (a cleft volunteer worker and a national high school teacher) assessed the recordings using a visual analogue scale (VAS). Inter-rater and intra-rater reliability for hypernasality in both speaking and singing were verified using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). A significant reduction in hypernasality was observed during singing as compared to speaking, indicating that hypernasality reduces when a child with cleft palate sings. The act of singing significantly reduces hypernasality. The outcome of this study suggests that children with cleft palate would benefit from singing exercises to ultimately reduce hypernasality. However, future research is needed to objectively measure nasality in singing compared to speaking.

The inspection of face sheet bonding, through optical interferometry techniques like holography and shearography, in potted-insert honeycomb-cored sandwich panels is different from the inspection of panels without inserts due to their complex response toward thermal and vibration stressing. In this paper, the dynamic responses of metallic honeycomb-cored sandwich structures with bonded and debonded inserts are studied using time-averaged digital holography and illustrated. At high frequencies, the face sheet regions at perfectly bonded inserts act as hard points, and regions across a debonded insert locally resonate in the sensitivity range of interferometry. Since the discontinuities created by such inserts are very complex to simulate numerically, we simulate potted-insert sandwich structures through plates with multiple holes and with multiple fully and partially bonded local stiffeners to validate this fast inspection procedure. The simulated dynamic response of the plates is compared with the time-averaged digital holography results. The operational deflection shapes near stiffeners are similar to those of fully potted inserts in a sandwich panel. Thus, the extent of debond can be evaluated at high frequencies as simulated through partially bonded stiffeners.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD), recognized only recently as a single diagnostic entity, is a chronic inflammatory condition of unknown etiology. The diagnosis of IgG4-RD relies heavily on histopathological analysis and the correlation of histology findings with clinical, serological, and radiological data. CD4+ T and B cells, including IgG4-expressing plasmablasts, constitute the major inflammatory cell populations in IgG4-RD and are believed to cause organ damage and tissue fibrosis. Patients with IgG4-RD, who have active, untreated disease, exhibit marked expansion of IgG4-secreting plasmablasts in the blood. Important mechanistic insights correlated with the pathogenesis of IgG4-RD have been disclosed in recent years through the application of novel molecular biology approaches, including next-generation and single-cell RNA sequencing. Exploration of the interactions between these CD4+ T cells and cells of the B lymphocyte lineage is critical to understanding the pathophysiology of IgG4-RD. The establishment of pathogenic T cell clones and the identification of antigens specific to these clones constitute the first steps in determining the pathogenesis of this disease. This review focuses on clinical features and mechanistic insights regarding IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialoadenitis, from a perspective suitable for oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) are essential for immune competence. Here we show that pDC precursor differentiated from human CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) has low surface expression of pDC markers, and has limited induction of type I interferon (IFN) and IL-6 upon TLR7 and TLR9 agonists treatment; by contrast, cGAS or RIG-I agonists-mediated activation is not altered. Importantly, after priming with type I and II IFN, these precursor pDCs attain a phenotype and functional activity similar to that of peripheral blood-derived pDCs. Data from CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing of HSPCs further show that HSPC-pDCs with genetic modifications can be obtained, and that expression of the IFN-α receptor is essential for the optimal function, but dispensable for the differentiation, of HSPC-pDC percursor. Our results thus demonstrate the biological effects of IFNs for regulating pDC function, and provide the means of generating of gene-modified human pDCs.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of a combination of omega 3 essential fatty acids, green tea catechins, and ginsenosides on cognition and brain functioning in healthy older adults. DESIGN: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design randomized controlled trial with 26-day intervention phases and a 30-day washout period. SETTING: The Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. PARTICIPANTS: Ten independently-living, cognitively-healthy older adults (mean age: 67.3 + 2.01 years). INTERVENTION: Daily consumption of an investigational product (trade name "Cerbella TM") consisting of an emulsified liquid combination of standardized fish oil, panax ginseng extract, and green tea catechins in a flavored base of lecithin phospholipids optimized to maximize bioavailability of the active ingredients. MEASUREMENTS: Before and after supplementation with the investigational product or placebo, participants completed cognitive tests including the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE), Stroop test, Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Immediate and Delayed Recall tests, as well as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a standard cognitive task switching paradigm. RESULTS: Performance on the MMSE, Stroop test, and DSST increased significantly over one month of supplementation with the investigational product (one-sample t tests, p<.05) although differences between these changes and corresponding changes during supplementation with placebo were not significant (two-sample t tests, p>.05). During supplementation with the investigational product, brain activation during task performance increased significantly more than during supplementation with placebo in brain regions known to be activated by this task (anterior and posterior cingulate cortex). Functional connectivity during task execution between task regions (middle frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate cortex) increased significantly during supplementation with the investigational product, relative to placebo. Functional connectivity during rest between task regions (precentral gyrus and middle frontal gyrus) and default mode network regions (medial frontal gyrus and precuneus) decreased during supplementation with the investigational product relative to placebo, suggesting greater segregation of task and rest related brain activity. CONCLUSION: One-month supplementation with a combination of omega 3 essential fatty acids, green tea catechins, and ginsenosides was associated with suggestive changes in cognitive functioning as well as modification of brain activation and brain functional connectivity in cognitively healthy older adults.

AIMS: Acid exposure induces accumulation of certain metabolites in bacteria. The experimental objective was to identify the primary metabolites accumulating in Escherichia coli O26:H11 as a function of acid (pH 3·6) exposure. METHODS AND RESULTS: Different buffers of pH 7·5 and 3·6 were used to study the metabolites accumulating in E. coli O26:H11 cells during such pH exposure. After 24 h of acid exposure, there was a 7-log decline in E. coli populations on trypticase soy agar plates. Untargeted metabolomic analysis identified 293 primary metabolites of which 145 metabolites were differentially (P < 0·01) accumulating between pH 7·5 and 3·6 in E. coli O26:H11. CONCLUSIONS: After 24 h of acid exposure, 21 different metabolic pathways appeared to be functional, suggesting that the cells were still metabolically active. Among the identifiable pathways, the key differentially expressed pathways were associated with peptidoglycan biosynthesis, purine metabolism, d-Glutamine/d-glutamate metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis and inositol phosphate metabolism. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Shiga toxin producing non-O157 E. coli strains such as E. coli O26 are responsible for a growing number of food-related illnesses in the United States and around the world. From food production to consumption, micro-organisms in foods experience dramatic pH fluctuations by organic acids introduced either during food processing or by inorganic acids in the stomach. Acid exposure induces specific metabolite accumulation in bacterial cells. Understanding the survival mechanisms of pathogenic micro-organisms by studying the metabolome would be helpful in introducing effective hurdles and thus ensuring food safety.

Chordoma is a rare malignant tumor with predilection for the sacrum. A favorable outcome depends on early diagnosis and surgical excision with tumor free margins. AIM: To review the incidence and prevalence of sacral chordoma and the appropriate surgical management and formulate a criteria for early diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty eight articles on the subject of sacral chordoma and extrapolated data of clinical and surgical significance. RESULTS: The commonest presenting feature in patients with sacral chordoma was lower back pain which was worse on sitting and up to a third of these patients had associated urinary tract infections, constipation or symptoms of disc herniation. The hallmark of sacral chordoma is lower back pain with poor response to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.Disease free eradication in chordoma is rare and not without neurological deficit. The common sacral levels involved ie. S2,3 have to be sacrificed to achieve adequate margins4. Whilst wide excision via posterior surgery shows a decrease in recurrence, the overall survival still remains low.
