Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains the leading cause of blindness in the working-age population. Its progression causes gradual damage to corneal nerves, resulting in decreased corneal sensitivity (CS) and disruption of anterior-eye-surface homeostasis, which is clinically manifested by increased ocular discomfort and dry eye disease (DED). This study included 52 DR patients and 52 sex- and age-matched controls. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) survey, tear film-related parameters, CS, and in vivo corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM) of the subbasal plexus were performed. Furthermore, all patients underwent tear sampling for neurotrophin and cytokine analysis. OSDI scores were greater in DR patients than in controls (p = 0.00020). No differences in the Schirmer test score, noninvasive tear film-break-up time (NIBUT), tear meniscus or interferometry values, bulbar redness, severity of blepharitis or meibomian gland loss were found. In the DR group, both the CS (p < 0.001), and the scotopic pupil diameter (p = 0.00008) decreased. IVCM revealed reduced corneal nerve parameters in DR patients. The stage of DR was positively correlated with the OSDI (Rs = +0.51, 95% CI: + 0.35-+0.64, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with IVCM corneal nerve parameters and scotopic pupillometry (Rs = -0.26, 95% CI: -0.44--0.06, p = 0.0097). We found negative correlations between the OSDI and IVCM corneal innervation parameters. The DR group showed lower tear film-brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels (p = 0.0001) and no differences in nerve growth factor (NGF)-ß, neurotrophin (NT)-4, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, or IL-12 concentrations. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-2, IL-8, IL-10, granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), and interferon (IFN)-γ levels were decreased among patients with DR. Corneal innervation defects have a direct impact on patients' subjective feelings. The evolution of DR appears to be associated with corneal nerve alterations, emphasizing the importance of IVCM.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a complex autoimmune disease that leads to joint destruction. A number of immune cells that affect joint tissues are involved in the pathogenesis of this disease. This leads to the synthesis of many pro-inflammatory mediators. The transport of drugs, as well as many cytokines involved in the development of inflammation in RA patients, is mediated by membrane transporters. Membrane transporters are proteins that mediate the transfer of substrates across biological membranes. But to date there are no studies examining the expression of solute carrier (SLC) transporters in joint tissues. The aim of the study was to evaluate the expression of individual SLC family transporters in the synovial membranes (SMs) and infrapatellar fat pad (Hoffa's pad) of RA patients. The study included 20 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 20 with osteoarthritis as the control group who were undergoing joint replacement surgery as a normal part of clinical care. In the SM and Hoffa's pad of RA patients the following 17 membrane transporters were defined at relevant expression levels for SLC transporter superfamily: SLC15A2, SLC16A3, SLC19A1, SLC2A9, SLC22A1, SLC22A3, SLC22A4, SLC22A5, SLC22A18, SLC33A1, SLC47A1, SLC51A, SLC7A5, SLC7A6, SLC01C1, SLC02B1, SLC04A1. The confirmed expression of these transporters in the SMs as well as Hoffa's pad of patients with RA and OA, and the differences in their expression between these groups, suggests the involvement of SLC transporters in both the maintenance of homeostasis under physiological conditions in the tissues of the joints, as well as in the inflammatory process in RA.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a malignant tumor with a higher prevalence in men and a higher survival rate in transmenopausal women. It exhibits distinct areas influenced by changing environmental conditions. This study examines how these areas differ in the levels of estrogen receptors (ERs) which play an important role in the development and progression of many cancers, and whose expression levels are often correlated with patient survival. This study utilized two research models: an in vitro model employing the U87 cell line and a second model involving tumors resected from patients (including tumor core, enhancing tumor region, and peritumoral area). ER expression was assessed at both gene and protein levels, with the results validated using confocal microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Under hypoxic conditions, the U87 line displayed a decrease in ERß mRNA expression and an increase in ERα mRNA expression. In patient samples, ERß mRNA expression was lower in the tumor core compared to the enhancing tumor region (only in males when the study group was divided by sex). In addition, ERß protein expression was lower in the tumor core than in the peritumoral area (only in women when the study group was divided by sex). Immunohistochemical analysis indicated the highest ERß protein expression in the enhancing tumor area, followed by the peritumoral area, and the lowest in the tumor core. The findings suggest that ER expression may significantly influence the development of GBM, exhibiting variability under the influence of conditions present in different tumor areas.

Advanced respiratory failure with tracheostomy requirement is common in heart recipients. The aim of the study is to assess the tracheostomy rate after orthotopic heart transplantation and identify the subgroups of patients with the highest need for tracheostomy and these groups' association with mortality at a single centre through a retrospective analysis of 140 consecutive patients transplanted between December 2012 and July 2018. As many as 28.6% heart recipients suffered from advanced respiratory failure with a need for tracheostomy that was performed after a median time of 11.5 days post-transplant. Tracheostomy was associated with a history of stroke (OR 3.4; 95% CI) 1.32-8.86; p = 0.012), previous sternotomy (OR 2.5; 95% CI 1.18-5.32; p = 0.017), longer cardiopulmonary bypass time (OR 1.01; 95% CI 1.00-1.01; p = 0.007) as well as primary graft failure (OR 6.79; 95% CI2.93-15.71; p < 0.001), need of renal replacement therapy (OR 19.2; 95% 2.53-146; p = 0.004) and daily mean SOFA score up to 72 h (OR 1.50; 95% 1.23-1.71; p < 0.01). One-year mortality was significantly higher in patients requiring a tracheostomy vs. those not requiring one during their hospital stay (50% vs. 16%, p < 0.001). The need for tracheostomy in heart transplant recipients was 30% in our study. Advanced respiratory failure was associated with over 3-fold greater 1-year mortality. Thus, tracheostomy placement may be regarded as a marker of unfavourable prognosis.

Research and development carried out by companies are pivotal for innovative economies of countries, especially in the unpredictable and changing social, economic and political environment. In this context, it is very important to answer, which factors identify the effectiveness of measures in relation to R&D activity and innovativeness in EU countries and how should the degree of development of a country be assessed in terms of R&D activity? The purpose of this article is to verify level of innovativeness and degree of research and development (R&D) activity in EU countries in the years 2014 and 2020 using Hellwig's measure of development. To achieve this, qualitative and quantitative analysis, synthesis, deduction and induction, comparative analysis, and reasoning by analogy of phenomena were employed. The research was conducted on the basis of the expertly selected variables for their relation to R&D activity from a number of sources, such as Eurostat, World Bank Data, etc.. The indicated variables were analysed using statistical methods and then subjected to a linear ordering procedure based on the Hellwig development pattern method. Thanks to the research results, it is possible to indicate areas in which the initiation of activities would have the greatest degree of influence on development of R&D activity, thus influencing the increase in the level of innovativeness of a country. Indicators relating to R&D activity were selected and then used as variables to study the effect of the degree of R&D activity in EU countries in the years 2014 and 2020 on the level of innovativeness of these countries. The conducted research coincides with the results presented in the European Innovation Scoreboard. There is a significant correlation between the development of R&D activities and innovation performance.

Herein, we report the results of anticancer screening of two 2-phenylbenzo[b]furan derivatives functionalised at the 3-position with 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoyl (BF2) or 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl (BF3) against 60 different cancer cell lines. The results confirmed the anticancer potential of the tested compounds against different cancer cell types, especially colon cancer, brain cancer and melanoma. BF3 was defined as the most potent (also as a tubulin polymerisation inhibitor). Its anticancer activity against melanoma cell lines that originated from different stages, i.e., primary skin-derived A375 and metastatic WM9/MDA-MB-435S, was evaluated (as the clinical success of melanoma therapy strictly depends on the disease stage). Moreover, to determine the BF3 mode of action and its effect on cell proliferation, intracellular microtubule networks, cell cycle phase distribution and apoptosis were evaluated. Our study revealed that BF3 inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, with IC50 yielding 0.09 ± 0.01 µM, 0.11 ± 0.01 µM and 0.18 ± 0.05 µM for A375, MDA-MB435S and WM9, respectively. The strong antiproliferative activity of compound BF3 correlated well with its inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerisation. Molecular docking proved that BF3 belongs to the colchicine binding site inhibitors (CBSIs), and experimental studies revealed that it disturbs cell cycle progression leading to G2/M arrest and apoptosis.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is a local inflammatory reaction caused by bacterial infection in which immune cells, including macrophages, are involved. Recent studies have shown that an important regulator of macrophage function is the human macrophage immunometabolism regulator (MACIR). This gene has been shown to play a key role in modulating the immune response by affecting the activity of fibroblasts and macrophages. In this study, we investigated the expression of MACIR in the gingival tissues of patients with periodontal disease, as well as the effect of IL-1ß and TNF-α on the expression of MACIR gene and protein in human gingival fibroblasts. METHODS: MACIR mRNA expression in gingival tissue samples was determined using Real-time PCR. Expression of MACIR protein was determined using immunofluorescent staining and western blotting. RESULTS: The MACIR mRNA expression in gingival tissue samples in patients with periodontitis was statistically significantly lower than in gingival tissue samples from healthy controls (p = 0.009). The stimulation of human gingival fibroblasts with IL-1ß and TNF-α resulted in a statistically significant decrease of MACIR gene mRNA expression. In western blotting and immunofluorescent analysis, we confirmed that the stimulation of the primary culture of human gingival fibroblasts by both IL-1ß and TNF-α decreases the expression of MACIR protein. CONCLUSION: The results of the study suggest that MACIR is an important regulator of the inflammatory process in patients with periodontitis. Decreased expression of the MACIR gene may activate macrophages to secrete mediators that increase inflammation and cause periodontal tissue destruction.

INTRODUCTION: Positive effects of calorie restrictions (CR) and EOD include decreased body weight, prolonged life span, but also changes in metabolism of the liver. In present paper our aim was to examine antioxidative enzymes: Catalase (CAT) and Manganese superoxidative dismutase (MnSOD, SOD2) and Glutathione peroxidase 4 (Gpx-4) in connection to caspase-3 and inflammatory mediators (IL-1ß and TNF- α) in EOD liver tissue in comparison to control mice. METHODS: After 9 months of EOD treatment male mouse liver tissue was harvested and prepared for analysis. Protein semi-quantitative estimation and cellular immunolocalization was performed for CAT, SOD2, Gpx-4, caspase-3, IL-1ß and TNF- α in liver tissue of mice fed every-other day in comparison to control (AL fed) animals. RESULTS: After prolonged EOD feeding in mice we observed decreased level of SOD2 and Gpx-4, decreased caspase-3, IL-1ß and TNF-α expression in liver tissue on protein level measured by semi-quantitative DAB staining intensity. CONCLUSION: For the first time we showed immunolocalization of major antioxidative enzymes (CAT, SOD2, Gpx-4) in liver tissue after DR. Decrease of two major antioxidant enzymes combined with decrease of apoptotic marker and inflammatory factors indicate decrease in oxidative stress as the result of fast in EOD feeding regime.

(1) Background: It is relevant to find new diagnostic biomarkers for endometrial cancer. This study aimed to investigate whether PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, TGF-α, EGF and ANG-2 could be considered new useful markers for diagnosis and survival of endometrial cancer. (2) Methods: A total of 93 women diagnosed with endometrial cancer (EC) and 66 patients with non-cancerous endometrial lesions (NCEL) were included in this study. (3) Results: Median serum levels of PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, TGF-α, EGF and ANG-2 were significantly higher in the EC group compared to the NCEL group (for PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, TGF-α and ANG-2, p = 0.0000; for EGF, p = 0.0186). The cut-off level of PDGF-AB was set at 127.69 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 87.1% and a specificity of 66.67% (AUC = 0.78, p < 0.000001). The cut-off level of PDGF-BB was set at 207.86 ng/L with a sensitivity of 82.8% and a specificity of 75.76% (AUC = 0.85, p < 0.000001). The cut-off level of TGF-α was set at 33.85 ng/L with a sensitivity of 82.8% and a specificity of 75.76% (AUC = 0.82, p < 0.000001). The cut-off level of EGF was set at 934.76 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 83.87% and a specificity of 28.79% (AUC = 0.61, p = 0.018472). The cut-off level of ANG-2 was set at 3120.68 pg/mL with a sensitivity of 72.04% and a specificity of 93.94% (AUC = 0.87, p < 0.000001). (4) Conlusion: It was concluded that all the proteins studied could be potential diagnostic markers in endometrial cancer.

Diabetes is one of the greatest healthcare problems; it requires an appropriate approach to the patient, especially when it concerns pregnant women. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common metabolic condition in pregnancy that shares many features with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). T2DM and GDM induce oxidative stress, which activates cellular stress signalling. In addition, the risk of diabetes during pregnancy can lead to various complications for the mother and foetus. It has been shown that physical activity is an important tool to not only treat the negative effects of diabetes but also to prevent its progression or even reverse the changes already made by limiting the inflammatory process. Physical activity has a huge impact on the immune status of an individual. Various studies have shown that regular training sessions cause changes in circulating immune cell levels, cytokine activation, production and secretion and changes in microRNA, all of which have a positive effect on the well-being of the diabetic patient, mother and foetus.

Periodontitis (PD) is a chronic inflammatory disease that is initiated by oral microorganisms. The pathogens induce the production of cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-17, which enhances the inflammatory response and progression of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine the expression and localization in gingival tissue of IL-17A and IL-17B in patients with periodontitis. This study included 14 patients with periodontal disease and 14 healthy subjects without periodontal disease as a control group. There were no statistically significant differences in the expression of IL-17A mRNA between patients with periodontitis and control subjects. The expression of IL-17B mRNA was statistically significantly lower in patients with periodontitis in comparison with healthy subjects (p < 0.048). The expression of IL-17A correlated significantly with the approximal plaque index. The IL-17B expression in gingival tissue correlated with the clinical attachment level. This correlation reached borderline statistical significance (p = 0.06). In immunohistochemical analysis, we have shown the highest expression of IL-17 protein in inflamed connective tissue, epithelium, and granulation tissue from gingival biopsy specimens from patients with periodontitis. In biopsy specimens from healthy individuals, no IL-17 was found in the epithelium, while an expression of IL-17 was found in the connective tissue. The results of our study confirm the involvement of IL-17 in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Our results suggest that an increase in IL-17 protein expression in the gingival tissue of patients with periodontitis occurs at the post-translational stage.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an abundant steroid and precursor of sex hormones. During aging, the reduction in DHEA synthesis causes a significant depletion of estrogens and androgens in different organs, such as the ovaries, brain, and liver. Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is a cholestatic liver disease that begins with immune-mediated bile duct damage, and is followed by liver fibrosis, and finally, cirrhosis. PBC primarily affects postmenopausal women, with an average age of diagnosis of 65 years, but younger women are also affected. Here, we analyzed the levels of DHEA, estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3) in the PBC sera of females at an age of diagnosis under 40 (n = 37) and above 65 (n = 29). Our results indicate that in PBC patients at an age of diagnosis under 40, E2 was significantly lower compared to that in healthy women. In contrast, the levels of DHEA and E3 were in a normal range. Furthermore, ELISA assays revealed that in PBC patients at an age of diagnosis above 65, the levels of DHEA, E2, and E3 significantly declined in comparison to those in younger patients. In addition, flow cytometry analysis showed that the level of IL-8 significantly decreased while the level of TNF-α increased in older PBC patients compared to younger ones. Moreover, we showed for the first time that the sulfonated form of DHEA, DHEA-S, reduces the levels of both pro-inflammatory interleukins, IL-8 and TNF-α, in PBC-like cholangiocytes (H69-miR506), while it diminishes the level of the pro-fibrotic interleukin, IL-13, in hepatocytes (Hep-G2). Finally, we demonstrated that the expression of the pro-fibrotic agent TGF-ß significantly increased in both the early (F0-F3) and cirrhotic (F4) stages of PBC, and this elevation was accompanied by higher α-SMA expression.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a malignant glioma, difficult to detect and with the lowest survival rates among gliomas. Its greater incidence among men and its higher survival rate among premenopausal women suggest that it may be associated with the levels of androgens. As androgens stimulate the androgen receptor (AR), which acts as a transcription factor, the aim of this study was the investigate the role of AR in the progression of GBM. The study was conducted on tissues collected from three regions of GBM tumors (tumor core, enhancing tumor region, and peritumoral area). In addition, an in vitro experiment was conducted on U-87 cells under various culture conditions (necrotic, hypoxic, and nutrient-deficient), mimicking the conditions in a tumor. In both of the models, androgen receptor expression was determined at the gene and protein levels, and the results were confirmed by confocal microscopy and immunohistochemistry. AR mRNA expression was higher under nutrient-deficient conditions and lower under hypoxic conditions in vitro. However, there were no differences in AR protein expression. No differences in AR mRNA expression were observed between the tested tumor structures taken from patients. No differences in AR mRNA expression were observed between the men and women. However, AR protein expression in tumors resected from patients was higher in the enhancing tumor region and in the peritumoral area than in the tumor core. In women, higher AR expression was observed in the peritumoral area than in the tumor core. AR expression in GBM tumors did not differ significantly between men and women, which suggests that the higher incidence of GBM in men is not associated with AR expression. In the group consisting of men and women, AR expression varied between the regions of the tumor: AR expression was higher in the enhancing tumor region and in the peritumoral area than in the tumor core, showing a dependence on tumor conditions (hypoxia and insufficient nutrient supply).

The conversion of kinetic energy from wind and solar radiation into electricity during the operation of wind and photovoltaic power plants causes practically no emissions of chemical compounds that are harmful to the environment. However, the production of their materials and components, as well as their post-use management after the end of their operation, is highly consumptive of energy and materials. For this reason, this article aims to assess the life cycle of a wind and photovoltaic power plant in the context of the sustainable development of energy systems. The objects of the research were two actual technical facilities-a 2 MW wind power plant and a 2 MW photovoltaic power plant, both located in Poland. The analysis of their life cycle was carried out on the basis of the LCA (life-cycle assessment) method, using the ReCiPe 2016 calculation procedure. The impact of the examined renewable energy systems was assessed under 22 impact categories and 3 areas of influence (i.e., human health, ecosystems, and resources), and an analysis was conducted for the results obtained as part of three compartments (i.e., air, water, and soil). The life cycle of the wind power plant was distinguished by a higher total potential negative environmental impact compared to the life cycle of the photovoltaic power plant. The highest levels of potential harmful impacts on the environment in both life cycles were recorded for areas of influence associated with negative impacts on human health. Emissions to the atmosphere accounted for over 90% of all emissions in the lifetimes of both the wind and the photovoltaic power plants. On the basis of the obtained results, guidelines were proposed for pro-ecological changes in the life cycle of materials and elements of the considered technical facilities for renewable energy sources, aimed at better implementation of the main assumptions of contemporary sustainable development (especially in the field of environmental protection).

The increase in the incidence of cancer has contributed to the search for new therapeutic methods. In recent years, the use of preparations of natural origin from medical fungi has increased. One such active substance is the extracellular, low molecular active fraction obtained from the medicinal fungus Cerrena unicolor. This study aimed to monitor the pharmacokinetics of different concentrations of substances isolated from the medicinal fungus Cerrena unicolor (ex-LMS) using the ECIS technique. In the study, mouse L929 fibroblasts and colon cancer CT26 cell lines were treated with different concentrations of the active fractions obtained from Cerrena unicolor: C1 = 2.285 (µg/mL); C2 = 22.85 (µg/mL); and C3 = 228.5 (µg/mL). This study demonstrated that the tested preparation from Cerrena unicolor had no considerable effect on the resistance, capacitance, and impedance of L929 fibroblast cells, which was an indicator of no significant effect on its physiological processes. At the same time, those parameters exhibited a decrease in colon cancer cell viability. Following our previous and current studies on Cerrena unicolor, ex-LMS extracts can be safely used in anticancer therapy or chemoprevention with no significant harmful effects on normal cells.

Adipose tissue is a multifunctional endocrine organ. One of the biologically active substances is vaspin, which is part of the serpin family. The purpose of the following study is to determine the possibility of using vaspin as a prognostic and risk factor in endometrial cancer. The study included 127 patients with abnormal uterine bleeding. To determine the value of adipokine, the study used Kaplan-Meier curves to estimate patients survival. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed simultaneously using the Cox regression model. Tissue expression of vaspin was assessed in patients from the study group (endometrial cancer) and the control group (non-cancerous). We found that higher levels of vaspin are found in obese people, with lower staging (FIGO I and II), lower grading (G1), no LVSI metastases and no lymph node metastases. Higher serum vaspin levels are an independent protective factor for endometrial cancer. We concluded that endometrial cancer patients with serum vaspin concentrations above the median have longer DFS compared to patients with concentrations below the median. Considering multivariate analysis, vaspin concentrations above the median are independent favourable prognostic factors for endometrial cancer. Tissue expression of vaspin cannot be a histological marker to distinguish between cancer and non-cancerous lesions and between different grading levels.

It is a well-known fact that physical activity benefits people of all age groups. However, highly intensive training, maladaptation, improper equipment, and lack of sufficient rest lead to contusions and sports-related injuries. From the perspectives of sports professionals and those performing regular-amateur sports activities, it is important to maintain proper levels of training, without encountering frequent injuries. The bodily responses to physical stress and intensive physical activity are detected on many levels. Epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation, histone protein methylation, acetylation, and miRNA expression occur in response to environmental changes and play fundamental roles in the regulation of cellular activities. In the current review, we summarise the available knowledge on epigenetic alterations present in tissues and organs (e.g., muscles, the brain, tendons, and bones) as a consequence of sports-related injuries. Epigenetic mechanism observations have the potential to become useful tools in sports medicine, as predictors of approaching pathophysiological alterations and injury biomarkers that have already taken place.

Epilobium angustifolium L. is an ethnomedicinal plant known as a medicinal plant in many regions of the world, among others, in various skin diseases. Despite the great interest in this plant, there are still few reports of biological activity of ready-made dermatological or cosmetical preparations containing the E. angustifolium extracts. The antioxidant, anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties and toxicity, wound healing, and skin permeation of topical hydrogels containing E. angustifolium extracts (HEas) was assessed. First, the plant extracts were prepared using three solvents: 70% (v/v) ethanol, 70% (v/v) isopropanol and water, next by preparing hydrogels witch by dry extracts (HEa-EtOH), (HEa-iPrOH) and (HEa-WA), respectively. Finally, the content of selected phenolic acids in the HEas was evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). All the HEas were characterized by high antioxidant activity. The most increased antibacterial activity was observed for a strain of Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49619, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Enterococcus faecium, Sarcina lutea ATCC 9341 and Bacillus pseudomycoides, while the strains of Streptococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus were the least sensitive. All the HEas showed a reduction in the activity of lipoxygenase enzymes, proteases, and inhibition of protein denaturation. The HEa-EtOH and HEa-iPrOH also enhanced the wound healing activity of HDF cells. Additionally, in vitro penetration studies were performed using the Franz diffusion cells. These studies showed that the active ingredients contained in E. angustifolium penetrate through human skin and accumulate in it. Furthermore, the hydrogels containing E. angustifolium extracts showed a broad spectrum of activity. Therefore, they can be considered as an interesting alternative for dermatologic and cosmetic preparations.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most serious problems in modern oncological gynecology. The link between obesity (expressed in BMI, WHR, waist circumference, body weight) and ovarian cancer has been poorly studied. Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of bodily fat, exceeding its physiological needs and adaptability. Study results suggest a link between specific histological types of ovarian cancer with increased patients' BMI. Adipose tissue is hormonally active and secretes biologically active proteins called adipokines. Resistin and leptin may show proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects. There is currently increasing attention to adipokine levels in ovarian cancer research. The influence of adiponectin on the secretion of angiogenic factors by ovarian cancer cells has been shown. It has been proven that leptin is associated with a worse prognosis for patients treated with platinum compounds combined with paclitaxel/docetaxel. The relation has been observed between the level of resistin and the growth of neoplastic cells, their spread and the resistance to chemotherapy. The level of AdipoR1 may be independent prognostic factor in the case of epithelial ovarian cancer. The role of adipokine in the neoplasm development requires further investigation, in the view of fact that results of current research are still inconclusive. Considering increasing number of people suffering from obesity as well as the current analysis results, it is necessary to extend experimentation on the influence of obesity on the development and prognosis of ovarian cancer.
