RESUMO

The pale cyst nematode Globodera pallida is a highly specialized, economically important pest for potato production. The specialized hatching requirements, ability to adapt, and the loss of effective control strategies such as methyl bromide fumigation increase the challenge to eradicate G. pallida in Idaho. Without a suitable host, this nematode can remain dormant as encysted eggs in soil for up to 20 years. In this study, we first demonstrated that Sinapis alba seed meal extract (SME) or 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (HBA), under laboratory and greenhouse conditions, enhances G. pallida egg hatch rate when exposed to potato root diffusate (PRD). This hatch rate enhancement in the presence of PRD is speculated to be due to an increase in egg-shell permeability. We then tested the efficacy of (i) Solanum sisymbriifolium following prior treatment with S. alba SME (0 and 4.48 t/ha) or HBA (0 and 0.12 t/ha) and (ii) Brassica juncea SME (0, 0.14, 0.56, and 1.12 t/ha) following HBA treatment (0 and 4.48 t/ha) on egg viability, hatch rate, and reproduction of G. pallida encysted eggs. S. sisymbriifolium alone reduced the number of encysted eggs compared to the nontreated control by up to 67%, indicating that this trap crop triggered G. pallida eggs to hatch. When combined with S. alba SME or HBA, S. sisymbriifolium significantly reduced egg count, hatch rate, and viability more than S. sisymbriifolium alone. The combination of S. sisymbriifolium with HBA or S. alba SME eliminated G. pallida reproduction on the susceptible potato. All the tested rates of B. juncea SME alone or with HBA reduced egg hatch rate, viability, and reproduction compared to the nontreated control. Combining HBA and B. juncea SME further significantly reduced egg hatch rate, viability, and reproduction than those rates of B. juncea SME alone.

RESUMO

AIM: The study was aimed at assessing efficacy and safety of endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms based on 11-year experience with implantation of stent grafts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed outcomes of treatment of 242 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm during the period from 2008 to 2019. Of these, 210 (86.78%) were males, mean age 69.32±7.36 years. Diagnosis was made using colour duplex scanning and contrast-enhanced multislice spiral computed tomography, with implanting the following stent grafts: Ella - 44, Ovation Prime - 33, Anaconda - 13, Endurand - 77, Aortix - 2, Zenith - 33, Seal - 39, with one endoprosthesis placement failed. Assessing safety of the operation, we took into consideration lethality due to aortic rupture/thrombosis. Efficacy was taken to mean technical success of the operation (implantation of all components of the endograft without switch to open surgery), the number of reoperations. RESULTS: Technical success of the operation was achieved in 98.35% of cases. In 1 case due to pronounced arterial calcification for technical reasons we failed to position the stent graft and in another case - the contralateral leg of the Ella prosthesis. The early postoperative period revealed: type A1 endoleak - 3.7%, type IB - 4.13%, type IIA - 6.6%, type IIB - 4.54%, type III - 0.83%, type IV - 0.83%. Repeat operations were performed in 20 (8.2%) patients within 30 days after the intervention and in 32 (13.22%) in the remote period. In the early postoperative period two conversions were performed: 1) iliorenal bypass grafting for restoration of blood flow through the renal artery occluded by endoprosthesis wall; 2) evacuation of retroperitoneal haematoma due to rupture of the common femoral artery. Lethality during the whole period of follow up amounted to 32 (13.22%) cases. Of these, due to aortic complications 4.54% (n=11) and due to accompanying pathology 8.67% (n=21). A direct correlation was revealed between the aortic diameter and duration of the operation which in turn increases the risk of complications requiring re-operation or resulting in a lethal outcome (RR - 1; 95% CD 1- 1; p=0.026). CONCLUSION: Our experience showed high safety and efficacy of stent graft implantation in treatment of patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms and high surgical risk.

RESUMO

AIM: The present study was aimed at assessing the results of a total of 40 vascular operations carried out using the robotic-assisted da Vinci surgical system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 2013 and September 2019, a total of 40 robotic-assisted vascular operations were performed at the Department of Vascular Pathology and Hybrid Technologies of the Centre of Vascular and Hybrid Surgery. Of these, 31 interventions were carried out for occlusion of the aortoiliac segment and 9 for removal of an aneurysm of the infrarenal portion of the abdominal aorta. The patients were arbitrarily divided into 2 groups: the first group included those subjected to aortofemoral bypass grafting procedures for atherosclerotic steno-occlusive lesions of the aorta and iliac arteries, whereas the second group comprised the patients who underwent aneurysmoectomies with linear prosthetic repair of the abdominal aorta. RESULTS: Altogether, elective robotic-assisted operations were successfully performed in 38 (95%) cases. Conversion to a laparotomic approach was required in 2 (5%) patients. The mean time of creating an anastomosis with the abdominal aorta amounted to 51 minutes (range 30-90), being 42±4.75 min for aortofemoral bypass grafting and 83±5.00 min for aneurysmoectomies with linear prosthetic repair of the abdominal artery. The average blood loss was 316 (range 50-1000) ml, amounting to 280±209 ml and 438±322 ml for group I and group II, respectively. With the exception of one case, all patients spent 24 hours in the intensive care unit to be then transferred to the specialized ward. The average length of hospital stay amounted to 9.8 days. One patient experienced haemorrhage from the central anastomosis in the early postoperative period and was emergently operated on from a laparotomic approach. Four (10%) patients developed nonlethal complications which were treated conservatively. During the 30-day follow-up period, no lethal outcomes, thromboses, nor infections of the prostheses were observed. CONCLUSION: From a practical point of view, the major advantages of using the robotic-assisted complex include minimal surgical trauma, reduced blood loss, a wide range of high-precision movements of the manipulators, 3-D visualization with a 5-fold magnification, thus making it possible to create a vascular anastomosis sufficiently fast in very tight spaces in the body. Our experience with laparoscopic robotic-assisted surgery demonstrated feasibility of using this technique for treatment of pathology of the aortoiliac segment.

RESUMO

An aorto-oesophageal fistula is a rare but life-threatening pathological condition developing on the background of diseases of the aorta and oesophagus, as well as after surgical interventions on the aorta. The article deals with a clinical case report regarding management of a patient presenting with an aorto-oesophageal fistula resulting from a thoracic artery aneurysm. The main clinical manifestations of the diseases included dysphagia (due to oesophageal obstruction caused by thrombotic masses of the aneurysm) and the occurring gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Comprehensive instrumental diagnosis was performed using roentgen examination of the oesophagus, oesophagoscopy, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the chest. The obtained findings made it possible to objectively assess the patient's state, to carry out timely treatment in conditions of a surgical hospital, and to avoid severe complications.

RESUMO

AIM: The study was undertaken to evaluate safety and efficacy of carotid stents Acculink (open-cell carotid stent) and CGuard (closed-cell type stent) in treatment of patients presenting with atherosclerotic lesions of carotid arteries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study enrolled a total of 50 patients diagnosed with haemodynamically significant stenosis of the carotid artery and divided into two groups of 25 patients each. Group One patients received Acculink stents and Group Two patients underwent implantation of CGuard stents. Ultrasonographic examination was performed in all patients before and after surgery, as well as at 6 and 12 months thereafter; magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was carried out before and after surgery (at 24-48 postoperative hours and on POD 30). The entire period of follow up included 5 examinations of each patient by a neurologist. The obtained findings were statistically analysed using the Statistica 12 software (StatSoft, USA). The level of deviation of the null hypothesis of the absence of differences between the groups was regarded as significant at p<0.05. RESULTS: The technical success of the operation amounted to 100% in both groups. There were no complications (such as haematoma, arterial dissection, etc.) in the area of the approach in either group. The findings of ultrasonographic examination of the extracranial portion of the carotid arteries demonstrated a significant difference in the form of a decrease in the degree of narrowing of the operated vessel (p<0.05) as compared with its initial parameters. The number of the detected foci of acute cerebral ischaemia in the postoperative period (24-48 h) amounted to: in the Acculink group - 14 (56%), in the CGuard group - 12 (48%), p>0.77. Of these, multiple foci in Group One were encountered significantly more often than in Group Two (p=0.02). The patients with the Acculink stent implanted were found to develop 2 (4%) episodes of acute cerebral circulation impairment: the first one occurring after 24 hours and the second one at 28 days after stenting, with no such complications observed in Group Two patients. CONCLUSION: Comparing the two stents (Acculink and CGuard) demonstrated no advantages with respect to safety and efficacy of either stent in endovascular treatment of patients with atherosclerotic lesions of brachiocephalic arteries.

RESUMO

Gaseous transmitters were assayed in rat blood during catecholamine-induced damage to the heart. Hypercatecholaminemia was modeled by single subcutaneous injection of 0.1% epinephrine hydrochloride in a dose of 2 mg/kg. The blood concentrations of NO, H2S, and CO were measured. The catecholamine-induced damage to the myocardium resulted in phasic changes in the blood levels of gaseous transmitters: CO concentration increased in 1 h, H2S increased in 24 h, and NO concentration increased in 72 h after injection.

RESUMO

Described herein is a clinical case report regarding successful endovascular treatment of a patient presenting with an abdominal aortic aneurysm combined with occlusion of one of the iliac arteries. Cases concerning elimination of such pathology appear to be reported only sporadically in the available literature. The patient underwent reconstructive repair in two stages. The first stage comprised recanalization with stenting of the occluded iliac artery on the right and implantation of the Zenith stent graft. The findings of intraoperative check angiography showed no evidence of endoleak, with the preserved patency of both the stent graft and iliac arteries on the right. The second stage consisted of balloon angioplasty of stenosis of the external iliac artery on the left. The results of the follow-up examination at 3 years showed that the iliac arteries on both sides and the aortic endograft were free from significant stenoses, with no evidence of endoleaks.

RESUMO

The comparative characteristic of indicators of thromboelastography of umbilical cord blood and venous blood for 1-3 days of life at full-term and premature newborns is carried out. The study included 40 full term and 68 preterm infants at 1-5 days of life. Body weight of children was 3413.8±54.6 g and 2039.4±75.9 g, gestational age - 40.0±0.3 and 33.5±0.33 weeks, respectively. Mixed umbilical cord blood and venous blood taken from the ulnar vein of a child for 1-3 days of life were studied. The obtained data indicate that the main focus in the performance of thromboelastograms in premature and full-term newborns in the umbilical and venous blood are preserved. In preterm infants in cord blood decreased activity of the plasma level and functional activity of platelets, as well as reduced coagulation potential in General. After birth, premature newborns in the venous blood showed a slowdown in blood clotting, a decrease in the rate of formation and strength of clots. There is also a decrease in the functional activity of platelets, coagulation index and a more pronounced change in hemostatic potential in the direction of hypocoagulation. In full-term children, changes in the functional state of platelets and clot lysis in the umbilical and venous blood after birth do not change significantly. Hypercoagulable orientation of hemostasis in these children at birth was established.

RESUMO

The high prevalence of chronic inflammatory oropharyngeal pathologies and a large variety of specific pathogenetic features of the persistent viral infections caused by the species of the families Herpesviridae and Papillomaviridae as etiological agents of the disease suggest the necessity of investigations with a view to evaluating the clinical significance of persistent viral infections with Herpesviridae and Papillomaviridae species in the patients presenting with chronic inflammatory oropharyngreal pathology. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the prevalence and clinical significance of viral infections caused by the pathogenic agents belonging to the families Herpesviridae and Papillomaviridae in the patients presenting with chronic inflammatory pathology of the oropharynx. We examined two groups of patients one of which was comprised of 174 subjects suffering from chronic inflammatory oropharyngeal pathologies while the other consisted of 31 healthy people. All the patients in both groups underwent the general clinical examination, real-time PCR diagnostics of the viral infections with Herpes viridae and Papilloma viridae using the scrapings of oropharyngeal mucosa, and the microbiological study of the oropharynx secretion. The study has demonstrated the high frequency of viral infections caused by Herpesviridae and Papillomaviridae species in the patients with chronic inflammatory pathology of the oropharynx in comparison with the control group of healthy subjects (81.03% and 45.16% respectively). It was shown that the certain types of pathological conditions were specifically associated with the concrete forms of viral infections. The results of the cytological study give evidence that all (100%) the patients with chronic inflammatory oropharyngeal pathologies had the specific changes in epithelium in the combination with the non-specific alterations. 63.6% of the patients with chronic inflammatory oropharyngeal pathologies and negative results of viral diagnostics using the real-time PCR technology were found to have non-specific changes in epithelium as opposed to 25.8% of the healthy subjects. The correlation analysis of the results of real-time PCR diagnostics and the bacteriological study showed that 45.1% of the carriers of the Epstein-Barr virus were infected with S. pneumoniae and 23.2% with Kl..pneumoniae whereas the mixed infection was documented in 31.1% of the EBV carriers. Moreover, 10.98% of such patients presented with Candida albicans infection whereas. 54.5% and 27.3% of the patients with HHV-6 were diagnosed as having S. aureus and S. pneumoniae infection respectively; the combined flora was found in 18.2% of such patients.

RESUMO

Presented herein is a literature review aimed at investigating the appropriateness and possibility of using nicergoline (sermion) for treatment of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. The analysis includes the most clinically significant results of scientific studies. The material to be reviewed was retrieved using the following key words: 'nicergoline', 'sermion', and 'diabetes mellitus' (with their respective Russian equivalents) in such databases as Medline, PubMed, ScienceDirect, PMC, Cochrane, as well as archives of both Russian and foreign journals, guidelines (clinical guidelines on rendering medical care for patients with diabetes mellitus, selected lectures on endocrinology). A broad spectrum of action and no significant side effects have made it possible to use this drug in various pathological conditions. At the same time, because of limited experience of using nicergoline for vascular diseases and an insufficient number of the carried out studies the precise role of this therapeutic agent in clinical practice has not yet been conclusively defined. Special attention is given to the analysis of efficacy of nicergoline in atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

The article deals with a case report regarding successful surgical management of late type IB endoleak caused by dislocation of the leg of the stent graft, occurring three years after endoprosthetic repair of an aneurysm of the aortic infrarenal portion with the COOK stent graft, aneurysmectomy with prosthetic repair of the right common femoral artery using the linear vascular graft Intergard 8Ч20. The patient underwent surgical treatment: endoprosthetic repair of the iliac branch ZSLE-24-90-90 ZT of the Zenith Spiral AAA stent graft. The findings of the check-up angiography and ultrasonographic examination revealed no evidence of endoleak, with the stent graft's patency preserved. The early postoperative period was marked with moderate manifestations of asthenic syndrome. The patient was discharged in a satisfactory condition. Cases concerning removal of similar complication in the remote period following endoprosthetic repair of the aorta are mentioned sporadically in the available literature.

RESUMO

Metabolic intervention strategy of epilepsy treatment has been gaining broader attention due to accumulated evidence that hypometabolism, manifested in humans as reduced brain glucose consumption, is a principal factor in acquired epilepsy. Therefore, targeting deficient energy metabolism may be an effective approach for treating epilepsy. To confront this pathology we utilized pyruvate, which besides being an anaplerotic mitochondrial fuel possesses a unique set of neuroprotective properties as it: (i) is a potent reactive oxygen species scavenger; (ii) abates overactivation of Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase 1 (PARP-1); (iii) facilitates glutamate efflux from the brain; (iv) augments brain glycogen stores; (v) is anti-inflammatory; (vi) prevents neuronal hyperexcitability; and (vii) normalizes the cytosolic redox state. In vivo, chronic oral pyruvate administration completely abolished established epileptic phenotypes in three accepted and fundamentally different rodent acquired epilepsy models. Our study reports metabolic correction by pyruvate as a potentially highly effective treatment of acquired epilepsies.

RESUMO

The article deals with a case report regarding successful surgical management of a patient presenting with an anatomically complicated aneurysm of the aortic infrarenal portion and iliac arteries. The first stage consisted in performing implantation of the Ovation Prime stent graft into the abdominal aorta. One month later, the second stage carried out for residual type IB endoleak consisted in implantation of the iliac components of the stent graft into the external iliac arteries on the right and the left. The postoperative period turned out uneventful. The findings of the check ultrasonographic examination showed no evidence of endoleak, with the stent graft's patency preserved. The patient was discharged in a satisfactory condition. The check multispiral computed tomography performed 30 days after the operation also demonstrated complete isolation of the aneurysm of the aorta and iliac arteries from blood flow, with the graft's being patent. The presented herein clinical case report is of sporadic occurrence and is of practical importance for extending the indications for aortic endoprosthetic repair.

RESUMO

The sampling of newborns (n=28) was examined. Out of them, 18 premature children formed main group (gestation age from 28 to35 weeks, body mass 2067,3±76,7g) and 10 mature children formed comparison group (gestation age from 38 to 41 weeks, body mass 3380,2±57,2g) born from mothers with physiologically occurring pregnancy without extra-genital pathology. In all children, the detection of endothelial cells isolated from umbilical cord vein in mixed umbilical blood and lysate was applied and indices of free radical oxidation of lipids, characterizing oxidizing stress as well and anti-oxidation activity using chemiluminescence technique. The study results demonstrated in premature newborns increasing in umbilical blood of indices of fast flash chemiluminescence (Imax), light sun value (S) and tangent of kinetic curve slope (tga) and also increasing of parameters Imax and tga in lysate of endothelial cells of umbilical cord. Al these occurrences testify in these children development oxidation stress being accompanied by compensation increasing of antioxidant activity.

RESUMO

When searching for alternative methods to animal testing, confidently rescaling an in vitro result to the corresponding in vivo classification is still a challenging problem. Although one of the most important factors affecting good correlation is sample characteristics, they are very rarely integrated into correlation studies. Usually, in these studies, it is implicitly assumed that both compared values are error-free numbers, which they are not. In this work, we propose a general methodology to analyze and integrate data variability and thus confidence estimation when rescaling from one test to another. The methodology is demonstrated through the case study of rescaling the in vitro Direct Peptide Reactivity Assay (DPRA) reactivity to the in vivo Local Lymph Node Assay (LLNA) skin sensitization potency classifications. In a first step, a comprehensive statistical analysis evaluating the reliability and variability of LLNA and DPRA as such was done. These results allowed us to link the concept of gray zones and confidence probability, which in turn represents a new perspective for a more precise knowledge of the classification of chemicals within their in vivo OR in vitro test. Next, the novelty and practical value of our methodology introducing variability into the threshold optimization between the in vitro AND in vivo test resides in the fact that it attributes a confidence probability to the predicted classification. The methodology, classification and screening approach presented in this study are not restricted to skin sensitization only. They could be helpful also for fate, toxicity and health hazard assessment where plenty of in vitro and in chemico assays and/or QSARs models are available. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

RESUMO

Empirical data on the behavior of radionuclides in aquatic ecosystems are needed for radioecological modeling, which is commonly used for predicting transfer of radionuclides, estimating doses, and assessing possible adverse effects on species and communities. Preliminary studies of radioecological parameters including distribution coefficients and concentration ratios, for (90)Sr and (137)Cs were not in full agreement with the default values used in the ERICA Tool and the RESRAD BIOTA codes. The unique radiation situation in the Techa River, which was contaminated by long-lived radionuclides ((90)Sr and (137)Cs) in the middle of the last century allows improved knowledge about these parameters for river systems. Therefore, the study was focused on the evaluation of radioecological parameters (distribution coefficients and concentration ratios for (90)Sr and (137)Cs) for the Techa River and the Miass River, which is assumed as a comparison waterbody. To achieve the aim the current contamination of biotic and abiotic components of the river ecosystems was studied; distribution coefficients for (90)Sr and (137)Cs were calculated; concentration ratios of (90)Sr and (137)Cs for three fish species (roach, perch and pike), gastropods and filamentous algae were evaluated. Study results were then compared with default values available for use in the well-known computer codes ERICA Tool and RESRAD BIOTA (when site-specific data are not available). We show that the concentration ratios of (137)Cs in whole fish bodies depend on the predominant type of nutrition (carnivores and phytophagous). The results presented here are useful in the context of improving of tools for assessing concentrations of radionuclides in biota, which could rely on a wider range of ecosystem information compared with the process limited the current versions of ERICA and RESRAD codes. Further, the concentration ratios of (90)Sr are species-specific and strongly dependent on Ca(2+) concentration in water. The universal characteristic allows us to combine the data of fish caught in the water with different mineralization by multiplying the concentration of Ca(2+). The concentration ratios for fishes were well-fitted by Generalized Logistic Distribution function (GLD). In conclusion, the GLD can be used for probabilistic modeling of the concentration ratios in freshwater fishes to improve the confidence in the modeling results. This is important in the context of risk assessment and regulatory.

RESUMO

The examined sampling consisted of 637 premature neonates in early neonatal period at 1-3 and 5-8 days of life. The analysis was applied to indices characterizing epithelium condition and regulating its function. It is noted that in premature neonates with respiratory distress-syndrome of derangement of regulation of function of endothelium are accompanied by increasing of hemostatic disorders and is characterized by increasing of thrombogenic and adhesive characteristics, decreasing of levels of VEGF, higher content of nitric oxide in the form of nitrites, cytokinemia and activation of complement systems.

RESUMO

The markers of endothelium dysfunction and factors of inflammation in pregnant women with hypertension with hypertension disorders of various genesis were analyzed. The clinical laboratory study was carried out on the basis of sampling of 158 women at pregnancy period of22-3 7 weeks. Out of this sampling 30 women had previously present chronic arterial hypertension, 3 0 women had chronic arterial hypertension and consecutive preeclampsia, 43 women had preeclampsia and 55 women had uncomplicated course of pregnancy without hypertension disorders (control group). It is established that in pregnant women with hypertension disorders of various genesis endothelial dysfunction and inflammation are developed/ This occurrence is confirmed by increasing of in blood of number of circulating desquamated endotheliocytes, C-reactive protein and homocystein in all groups; by increasing of serum level of t-PA, endothelin (1-21), MMP-2, sVCAM-1 and IL-6 under preeclampsia, including one consecutive to chronic arterial hypertension; by increasing of content of IL-6 in blood serum under chronic arterial hypertension with consecutive preeclampsia. The criteria are developed concerning serum content of t-PA, sVCAM-1, endothelin (1-21) and MMP-2 permitting to diagnose differentially previously present hypertension and preeclampsia, including consecutive one to chronic arterial hypertension.
