RESUMO

Soil microbes make up a significant portion of the genetic diversity and play a critical role in belowground carbon (C) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Soil microbial diversity and organic C are often tightly coupled in C cycling processes; however, this coupling can be weakened or broken by rapid global change. A global meta-analysis was performed with 1148 paired comparisons extracted from 229 articles published between January 1998 and December 2021 to determine how nitrogen (N) fertilization affects the relationship between soil C content and microbial diversity in terrestrial ecosystems. We found that N fertilization decreased soil bacterial (-11%) and fungal diversity (-17%), but increased soil organic C (SOC) (+19%), microbial biomass C (MBC) (+17%), and dissolved organic C (DOC) (+25%) across different ecosystems. Organic N (urea) fertilization had a greater effect on SOC, MBC, DOC, and bacterial and fungal diversity than inorganic N fertilization. Most importantly, soil microbial diversity decreased with increasing SOC, MBC, and DOC, and the absolute values of the correlation coefficients decreased with increasing N fertilization rate and duration, suggesting that N fertilization weakened the linkage between soil C and microbial diversity. The weakened linkage might negatively impact essential ecosystem services under high rates of N fertilization; this understanding is important for mitigating the negative impact of global N enrichment on soil C cycling.

RESUMO

Soil available phosphorus (SAP) and soil available potassium (SAK) are important elements in the growth of plants. However, limited data are available regarding the vertical distribution of SAP and SAK in deep soil profiles. In this study, we investigated the vertical variations in SAP and SAK in the critical zone on the Loess Plateau (50-200 m), China, by using classical statistical and geostatistical methods. The soil samples were collected from the top of the soil profile down to the bedrock by soil core drilling at five typical sites. SAP decreased throughout the profile. Whereas the SAK exhibited an increasing trend at all sites. The mean SAP concentration ranged from 0.94 to 32.56 mg kg-1 at the sampling sites and the SAK concentration ranged from 44.51 to 229.31 mg kg-1. At all of the sampling sites, SAK was significantly positively correlated with the depth and clay content, but there was a significantly negative correlation between the SAK and the sand content. The exponential model could fit most variograms of SAP and SAK at all sampling sites. The results obtained in this study to improve our comprehension of the SAP or SAK distribution conditions on the Loess Plateau, which is important for reasonable fertilizer application and vegetation planting practices.

RESUMO

The objective of the research was to reveal the potential toxicity effects of methyl mercaptan on rat lung tissue. A dynamic exposure device and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were adopted. The exposure concentration of methyl mercaptan was 0.5 ± 0.1 ppm. The exposure procedure was 6 h/day, continuing for 30 days. The routine blood levels, oxidative stress levels in serum, immune molecule and cytokine in the serum and lung tissue were tested. Morphology injury of lung tissue was detected by Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE) staining. Apoptosis rate of alveolar epithelial cells were determined by TdT-mediated dUTP Nick End Labeling (TUNEL) assay. Reduction of body weight gain was observed in the male group during the exposure time, while there was no significant reduction of body weight gain in the female group. Pathological findings of terminal bronchiole constriction, alveolar congestion, and erythrocyte exudation confirmed the lung to be the main target organ. An apparent pneumonocyte apoptotic effection was also observed. Oxidative stress with lipid peroxidation, which affect blood antioxidant enzyme levels and induce apoptosis of alveolar epithelial cells, are recognized as a potential mechanism leading to terminal bronchiole constriction, alveoli congestion, and exudates of erythrocyte.Implications: The odor pollutants greatly affect the health of operation workers in the waste treatment plant, and odor complaints are becoming a major problem. The aim of this work is to identify the lung tissue inflammatory response of SD rats with chronic exposure to methyl mercaptan vapor at close to the recommended workplace concentration. In this study, we used a dynamic exposure device and chronic exposure model of rats to evaluate the potential toxicity effects of methyl mercaptan. The results showed that methyl mercaptan may cause lung inflammatory response and extensive lung cell apoptosis. Oxidative damage, with lipid peroxidation and alterations in blood antioxidant enzyme levels, was observed following methyl mercaptan exposure. This is recognized as a potential mechanism for terminal bronchiolar constriction, alveolar congestion, and erythrocyte exudation.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of shallow groundwater and deep groundwater in the Guanzhong Plain region of China, as well as the related health risk to humans. In total, 130 groundwater samples were collected comprising 116 from shallow groundwater (dug wells) and 14 from deep groundwater (drilled wells). The water samples were analyzed to determine the levels of As and 12 other heavy metals (Al, Cd, Mn, Cr, V, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Co, Pb, and Mo). The results showed that the concentrations of As and other heavy metals in the deep groundwater samples were lower than the safe limits, but the Cr concentrations in some shallow groundwater samples exceeded the safe limits. The heavy metal pollution index and heavy metal evaluation index both showed that As and other heavy metals were pollutants at low levels in all of the shallow and deep groundwater sample. Health risk assessments showed that the deep groundwater samples had no associated non-carcinogenic health risks, whereas the shallow groundwater samples had non-carcinogenic health risks due to contamination with Cr and As. Some shallow groundwater samples had associated carcinogenic health risks due to contamination with Cr and As, whereas the deep groundwater samples only had carcinogenic health risks because of contamination with Cr. These results suggest that local residents and government departments should be made aware of Cr and As pollution in shallow groundwater.

RESUMO

The present study was carried out to evaluate the hematotoxicity and respiratory toxicity of methyl mercaptan in Sprague-Dawley rats. A dynamic exposure methodology was adopted in this study following 7 days of exposure by repeated inhalation. The concentration of methyl mercaptan used in the exposure was 0.5 ppm and the exposure time was 6 h/day for 7 days. After exposure, the rats were sacrificed to collect lung tissue and blood samples. Routine blood and serum biochemistry were conducted. Morphological injury of lung tissue was detected by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Decreased food consumption and body weight gain in both sexes were noted in the exposure group compared with the control group. Several significant changes in hematological parameters were observed. The results showed that the blood urea nitrogen (UREA) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD) values were significantly decreased in exposed male rats. Malondialdehyde (MDA) in lung tissue was significantly increased in both males and females in the exposed group. In the histopathological examination of lung tissue, terminal bronchiole constriction, alveolar congestion, and erythrocyte exudation were observed, suggesting that the lungs may be target organs after inhaling methyl mercaptan and workers exposed to this concentration may cause some pulmonary stimulation and injury.

RESUMO

The Loess Plateau of China (LP) has the largest and thickest loess deposits in the world. Quantifying the amount of loess in the LP is crucial for investigating the accumulation and erosion of loess, and determining the regional soil and water resource capacity. We used loess thickness data, a pedotransfer function for bulk density (BD), and the clay content data observed in 242 sites across the LP to derive the BD of loess and then estimate the loess mass and its distribution across the LP. The results indicated that the average BD of loess between the surface and bedrock is 1.58 g cm-3, varying from 1.18 to 1.87 g cm-3. The total loess mass is approximately 5.45 × 1013 t, and the average loess mass over an area of 1 m2 is 169 t, ranging from 1.36 to 585 t. The greatest mass of loess is in the south-central of the LP while the lowest mass of loess is in the northwest and river valley areas. Our estimate of loess mass provides key data for calculating water, carbon, and nutrient storages in the LP, which improves our understanding of soil-water processes and ecohydrological systems in this landscape.

RESUMO

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) contamination of soil and its harmful effects on human and environmental health have been one concern. In this study, batch and column leaching experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of two EDTA-assisted leaching methods, continuous and intermittent (dry-wet alternate), on the removal of Pb and Cd from contaminated soil. Total content and fractions of Pb and Cd at every 1 cm soil column depth were analyzed before and after the leaching. The results indicated that continuous leaching removed 75.43% of Pb (19.370 mg) and 53.21% of Cd (6.168 mg) and intermittent leaching removed 78.08% of Pb (20.051 mg) and 57.37% of Cd (6.650 mg), which showed intermittent leaching removed more Pb and Cd, but didn't differ significantly (P > 0.05) compared to the continuous leaching. In both leaching methods, total Pb and Cd content in all soil depths reduced after leaching. The two leaching methods made no significant differences in Pb and Cd distributions at different depths of the soil column.
