RESUMO

Household and personal care chemicals (HPCCs) constitute a significant component of everyday products, with their global usage on the rise. HPCCs are eventually discharged into municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, the behaviors of HPCCs inside the Bacillus Bioreactor (BBR) process, including their prevalence, fate, and elimination mechanisms, remain underexplored. Addressing this gap, our study delves into samples collected from a BBR process at a significant WWTP in the northeast of China. Our results spotlight the dominance of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LASs) in the influent with concentrations ranging between 238 and 789 µg/L, much higher than the other HPCC concentrations, and remained dominant in the subsequent treatment units. After treatment using the BBR process, the concentrations of HPCCs in the effluent were diminished. Examination of different treatment units underscores the grit chamber removed over 60% of higher-concentration HPCCs, while the performance of the (RBC) tank needs to be improved. Except for the ultraviolet radiation (UV)-filters, seasonal variations exert minimal impact on the concentrations and removal efficiencies of other HPCCs in the BBR process. According to the mass balance analysis, the important mechanisms for HPCC removal were biodegradation and sludge adsorption. Also, the octocrylene (OCT) concerns raised by the environmental risk assessment of the HPCCs residuals in the final effluent, indicate a moderate risk to the surrounding aquatic environment (0.1 < RQ < 1), whereas other HPCCs have a lower risk level (RQ < 0.1). Overall, the research offers new perspectives on the fate and elimination mechanisms of HPCCs throughout the BBR process.

RESUMO

Emotional distress (ED), commonly characterized by symptoms of depression and/or anxiety, is prevalent in patients with cancer. Preclinical studies suggest that ED can impair antitumor immune responses, but few clinical studies have explored its relationship with response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Here we report results from cohort 1 of the prospective observational STRESS-LUNG study, which investigated the association between ED and clinical efficacy of first-line treatment of ICIs in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. ED was assessed by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale. The study included 227 patients with 111 (48.9%) exhibiting ED who presented depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥5) and/or anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item score ≥5) symptoms at baseline. On the primary endpoint analysis, patients with baseline ED exhibited a significantly shorter median progression-free survival compared with those without ED (7.9 months versus 15.5 months, hazard ratio 1.73, 95% confidence interval 1.23 to 2.43, P = 0.002). On the secondary endpoint analysis, ED was associated with lower objective response rate (46.8% versus 62.1%, odds ratio 0.54, P = 0.022), reduced 2-year overall survival rate of 46.5% versus 64.9% (hazard ratio for death 1.82, 95% confidence interval 1.12 to 2.97, P = 0.016) and detriments in quality of life. The exploratory analysis indicated that the ED group showed elevated blood cortisol levels, which was associated with adverse survival outcomes. This study suggests that there is an association between ED and worse clinical outcomes in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer treated with ICIs, highlighting the potential significance of addressing ED in cancer management. A major contributing cause to breast cancer related death is metastasis. Moreover, breast cancer metastasis often shows little symptoms until a large area of the organs is occupied by metastatic cancer cells. Breast cancer multimodal imaging is attractive since it integrates advantages from several modalities, enabling more accurate cancer detection. Glycoprotein CD44 is overexpressed on most breast cancer cells and is the primary cell surface receptor for hyaluronan (HA). To facilitate breast cancer diagnosis, we report an indocyanine green (ICG) and HA conjugated iron oxide nanoparticle (NP-ICG-HA), which enabled active targeting to breast cancer by HA-CD44 interaction and detected metastasis with magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and near-infrared fluorescence imaging (NIR-FI). When evaluated in a transgenic breast cancer mouse model, NP-ICG-HA enabled the detection of multiple breast tumors in MPI and NIR-FI, providing more comprehensive images and a diagnosis of breast cancer. Furthermore, NP-ICG-HAs were evaluated in a lung metastasis model. Upon NP-ICG-HA administration, MPI showed clear signals in the lungs, indicating the tumor sites. This is the first time that HA-based NPs have enabled MPI of cancer. NP-ICG-HAs are an attractive platform for noninvasive detection of primary breast cancer and lung metastasis.

Artificial electronic kagome lattices may emerge from electronic potential landscapes using customized structures with exotic supersymmetries, benefiting from the confinement of Shockley surface-state electrons on coinage metals, which offers a flexible approach to realizing intriguing quantum phases of matter that are highly desired but scarce in available kagome materials. Here, we devise a general strategy to construct varieties of electronic kagome lattices by utilizing the on-surface synthesis of halogen hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (XHOFs). As a proof of concept, we demonstrate three XHOFs on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces, which correspondingly deliver regular, breathing, and chiral breathing diatomic-kagome lattices with patterned potential landscapes, showing evident topological edge states at the interfaces. The combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy, complemented by density functional theory and tight-binding calculations, directly substantiates our method as a reliable and effective way to achieve electronic kagome lattices for engineering quantum states.

Heart failure (HF) can be caused by a variety of causes characterized by abnormal myocardial systole and diastole. Ca2+ current through the L-type calcium channel (LTCC) on the membrane is the initial trigger signal for a cardiac cycle. Declined systole and diastole in HF are associated with dysfunction of myocardial Ca2+ function. This disorder can be correlated with unbalanced levels of phosphorylation / dephosphorylation of LTCC, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and myofilament. Kinase and phosphatase activity changes along with HF progress, resulting in phased changes in the degree of phosphorylation / dephosphorylation. It is important to realize the phosphorylation / dephosphorylation differences between a normal and a failing heart. This review focuses on phosphorylation / dephosphorylation changes in the progression of HF and summarizes the effects of phosphorylation / dephosphorylation of LTCC, ER function, and myofilament function in normal conditions and HF based on previous experiments and clinical research. Also, we summarize current therapeutic methods based on abnormal phosphorylation / dephosphorylation and clarify potential therapeutic directions.

Helical nanographenes with high quantum yields and strong chiroptical responses are pivotal for developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. Here, we present the successful synthesis of novel π-extended double [7]helicenes (ED7Hs) where two helicene units are fused at the meta- or para-position of the middle benzene ring, respectively, as the structural isomers of the reported ortho-fused ED7H. The structural geometry of these ED7Hs is clearly characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Notably, this class of ED7Hs exhibits bright luminescence with high quantum yields exceeding 40 %. Through geometric regulation of two embedded [7]helicene units from ortho-, meta- to para-position, these ED7Hs display exceptional amplification in chiroptical responses. This enhancement is evident in a remarkable approximate fivefold increase in the absorbance and luminescence dissymmetry factors (gabs and glum), respectively, along with a boosted CPL brightness up to 176 M-1 cm-1, surpassing the performance of most helicene-based chiral NGs. Furthermore, DFT calculations elucidate that the geometric adjustment of two [7]helicene units allows the precise alignment of electric and magnetic transition dipole moments, leading to the observed enhancement of their chiroptical responses. This study offers an effective strategy for magnifying the CPL performance in chiral NGs, promoting their expanded application as CPL emitters.

The growth cone, a motile structure located at the tip of growing axons, senses extracellular guidance cues and translates them into directional forces that drive axon outgrowth and guidance. Axon guidance directed by chemical cues on the extracellular adhesive substrate is termed haptotaxis. Recent studies reported that netrin-1 on the substrate functions as a haptotactic axon guidance cue. However, the mechanism mediating netrin-1-induced axonal haptotaxis remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that substrate-bound netrin-1 induces axonal haptotaxis by facilitating physical interactions between the netrin-1 receptor, DCC, and the adhesive substrates. DCC serves as an adhesion receptor for netrin-1. The clutch-linker molecule shootin1a interacted with DCC, linking it to actin filament retrograde flow at the growth cone. Speckle imaging analyses showed that DCC underwent either grip (stop) or retrograde slip on the adhesive substrate. The grip state was more prevalent on netrin-1-coated substrate compared to the control substrate polylysine, thereby transmitting larger traction force on the netrin-1-coated substrate. Furthermore, disruption of the linkage between actin filament retrograde flow and DCC by shootin1 knockout impaired netrin-1-induced axonal haptotaxis. These results suggest that the directional force for netrin-1-induced haptotaxis is exerted on the substrates through the adhesion-clutch between DCC and netrin-1 which occurs asymmetrically within the growth cone.

The occurrence of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) was related to disrupted sex steroid hormones, and metformin (Met) had a clinical response to sex steroid hormone-related gynaecological disease. However, whether Met exerts an antiproliferative effect on BPH via sex steroid hormones remains unclear. Here, our clinical study showed that along with prostatic epithelial cell (PEC) proliferation, sex steroid hormones were dysregulated in the serum and prostate of BPH patients. As the major contributor to dysregulated sex steroid hormones, elevated dihydrotestosterone (DHT) had a significant positive relationship with the clinical characteristics of BPH patients. Activation of adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) by Met restored dysregulated sex steroid hormone homeostasis and exerted antiproliferative effects against DHT-induced proliferation by inhibiting the formation of androgen receptor (AR)-mediated Yes-associated protein (YAP1)-TEA domain transcription factor (TEAD4) heterodimers. Met's anti-proliferative effects were blocked by AMPK inhibitor or YAP1 overexpression in DHT-cultured BPH-1 cells. Our findings indicated that Met would be a promising clinical therapeutic approach for BPH by inhibiting dysregulated steroid hormone-induced PEC proliferation.

OBJECTIVES: With the popularization of chest computed tomography (CT) screening, there are more sub-centimeter (≤ 1 cm) pulmonary nodules (SCPNs) requiring further diagnostic workup. This area represents an important opportunity to optimize the SCPN management algorithm avoiding "one-size fits all" approach. One critical problem is how to learn the discriminative multi-view characteristics and the unique context of each SCPN. METHODS: Here, we propose a multi-view coupled self-attention module (MVCS) to capture the global spatial context of the CT image through modeling the association order of space and dimension. Compared with existing self-attention methods, MVCS uses less memory consumption and computational complexity, unearths dimension correlations that previous methods have not found, and is easy to integrate with other frameworks. RESULTS: In total, a public dataset LUNA16 from LIDC-IDRI, 1319 SCPNs from 1069 patients presenting to a major referral center, and 160 SCPNs from 137 patients from three other major centers were analyzed to pre-train, train, and validate the model. Experimental results showed that performance outperforms the state-of-the-art models in terms of accuracy and stability and is comparable to that of human experts in classifying precancerous lesions and invasive adenocarcinoma. We also provide a fusion MVCS network (MVCSN) by combining the CT image with the clinical characteristics and radiographic features of patients. CONCLUSION: This tool may ultimately aid in expediting resection of the malignant SCPNs and avoid over-diagnosis of the benign ones, resulting in improved management outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: In the diagnosis of sub-centimeter lung adenocarcinoma, fusion MVCSN can help doctors improve work efficiency and guide their treatment decisions to a certain extent. KEY POINTS: • Advances in computed tomography (CT) not only increase the number of nodules detected, but also the nodules that are identified are smaller, such as sub-centimeter pulmonary nodules (SCPNs). • We propose a multi-view coupled self-attention module (MVCS), which could model spatial and dimensional correlations sequentially for learning global spatial contexts, which is better than other attention mechanisms. • MVCS uses fewer huge memory consumption and computational complexity than the existing self-attention methods when dealing with 3D medical image data. Additionally, it reaches promising accuracy for SCPNs' malignancy evaluation and has lower training cost than other models.

BACKGROUND: RING finger protein 135 plays an important role in tumorigenesis and is associated with drug resistance. METHODS: Bioinformatics analysis showed that RNF135 was significantly differentially expressed in colorectal cancer. RT-qPCR and western blot were used to detect the expression of RNF135. Immunohistochemical analysis were used to measure the expression of RNF135 and Ki-67. RESULTS: The expression of RNF135 was up-regulated in human tissue samples and colorectal cancer and was positively correlated with Ki-67. Compared with oxaliplatin sensitive patients, RNF135 expression levels were higher in the tissue of resistant patients. The regulatory effect of RNF135 on colorectal cancer cells was further investigated in vitro. Therefore, inhibition of autophagy by down-regulating RNF135 can partially increase its susceptibility to oxaliplatin.

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have garnered significant interest due to their highly customizable physicochemical properties and potential utility in nanoelectronics. Besides controlling widths and edge structures, the inclusion of chirality in GNRs brings another dimension for fine-tuning their optoelectronic properties, but related studies remain elusive owing to the absence of feasible synthetic strategies. Here, we demonstrate a novel class of cove-edged chiral GNRs (CcGNRs) with a tunable chiral vector (n,m). Notably, the bandgap and effective mass of (n,2)-CcGNR show a distinct positive correlation with the increasing value of n, as indicated by theory. Within this GNR family, two representative members, namely, (4,2)-CcGNR and (6,2)-CcGNR, are successfully synthesized. Both CcGNRs exhibit prominently curved geometries arising from the incorporated [4]helicene motifs along their peripheries, as also evidenced by the single-crystal structures of the two respective model compounds (1 and 2). The chemical identities and optoelectronic properties of (4,2)- and (6,2)-CcGNRs are comprehensively investigated via a combination of IR, Raman, solid-state NMR, UV-vis, and THz spectroscopies as well as theoretical calculations. In line with theoretical expectation, the obtained (6,2)-CcGNR possesses a low optical bandgap of 1.37 eV along with charge carrier mobility of ∼8 cm2 V-1 s-1, whereas (4,2)-CcGNR exhibits a narrower bandgap of 1.26 eV with increased mobility of ∼14 cm2 V-1 s-1. This work opens up a new avenue to precisely engineer the bandgap and carrier mobility of GNRs by manipulating their chiral vector.

Pluripotent stem cell-derived organoids can recapitulate significant features of organ development in vitro. We hypothesized that creating human heart organoids by mimicking aspects of in utero gestation (e.g., addition of metabolic and hormonal factors) would lead to higher physiological and anatomical relevance. We find that heart organoids produced using this self-organization-driven developmental induction strategy are remarkably similar transcriptionally and morphologically to age-matched human embryonic hearts. We also show that they recapitulate several aspects of cardiac development, including large atrial and ventricular chambers, proepicardial organ formation, and retinoic acid-mediated anterior-posterior patterning, mimicking the developmental processes found in the post-heart tube stage primitive heart. Moreover, we provide proof-of-concept demonstration of the value of this system for disease modeling by exploring the effects of ondansetron, a drug administered to pregnant women and associated with congenital heart defects. These findings constitute a significant technical advance for synthetic heart development and provide a powerful tool for cardiac disease modeling.

Helical nanographenes (NGs) have attracted increasing attention recently because of their intrinsic chirality and exotic chiroptical properties. However, the efficient synthesis of extended helical NGs featuring a multilayer topology is still underdeveloped, and their layer-dependent chiroptical properties remain elusive. In this study, we demonstrate a modular synthetic strategy to construct a series of novel helical NGs (1-3) with a multilayer topology through a consecutive Diels-Alder reaction and regioselective cyclodehydrogenation from the readily accessible phenanthrene-based precursors bearing ethynyl groups. The resultant NGs exhibit bilayer, trilayer, and tetralayer structures with elongated π extension and rigid helical backbones, as unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray or electron diffraction analysis. We find that the photophysical properties of these helical NGs are notably influenced by the degree of π extension, which varies with the number of layers, leading to obvious redshifted absorption, a fast rising molar extinction coefficient (ε), and markedly boosted fluorescence quantum yield (Φf). Moreover, the embedded [7]helicene subunits in these NGs result in stable chirality, enabling both chiral resolution and exploration of their layer-dependent chiroptical properties. Profiting from the good alignment of electric and magnetic dipole moments determined by the multilayer structure, the resultant NGs exhibit excellent circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence response with unprecedented high CPL brightness up to 168 M-1 cm-1, rendering them promising candidates for CPL emitters.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of consolidation-to-tumour ratio (CTR) and the radiomic models in two- and three-dimensional modalities for assessing radiological invasiveness in early-stage lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with early-stage lung adenocarcinoma from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital and Shenzhen People's Hospital. Manual delineation of pulmonary nodules along the boundary was performed on cross-sectional images to extract radiomic features. Clinicopathological characteristics and radiomic signatures were identified in both cohorts. CTR and radiomic score for every patient were calculated. The performance of CTR and radiomic models were tested and validated in the respective cohorts. RESULTS: A total of 818 patients from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital were included in the primary cohort, while 474 patients from Shenzhen People's Hospital constituted an independent validation cohort. Both CTR and radiomic score were identified as independent factors for predicting pathological invasiveness. CTR in two- and three-dimensional modalities exhibited comparable results with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves and were demonstrated in the validation cohort (area under the curve: 0.807 vs 0.826, P = 0.059) Furthermore, both CTR in two- and three-dimensional modalities was able to stratify patients with significant relapse-free survival (P < 0.000 vs P < 0.000) and overall survival (P = 0.003 vs P = 0.001). The radiomic models in two- and three-dimensional modalities demonstrated favourable discrimination and calibration in independent cohorts (P = 0.189). CONCLUSIONS: Three-dimensional measurement provides no additional clinical benefit compared to two-dimensional.

Electrified membrane technologies have recently demonstrated high potential in tackling water pollution, yet their practical applications are challenged by relying on large precursor doses. Here, we developed a Janus porous membrane (JPEM) with synergic direct oxidation by Magnéli phase Ti4O7 anode and electro-Fenton reactions by CuFe2O4 cathode. Organic pollutants were first directly oxidized on the Ti4O7 anode, where the extracted electrons from pollutants were transported to the cathode for electro-Fenton production of hydroxyl radical (·OH). The cathodic ·OH further enhanced the mineralization of organic pollutant degradation intermediates. With the sequential anodic and cathodic oxidation processes, the reagent-free JPEM showed competitive performance in rapid degradation (removal rate of 0.417 mg L-1 s-1) and mineralization (68.7 % decrease in TOC) of sulfamethoxazole. The JPEM system displayed general performance to remove phenol, carbamazepine, and perfluorooctanoic acid. The JPEM runs solely on electricity and oxygen that is comparable to that of PEM relies on large precursor doses and, therefore, operation friendly and environmental sustainability. The high pollutant removal and mineralization achieved by rational design of the reaction processes sheds light on a new approach for constructing an efficient electrified membrane.

The complex progression of type-2 diabetes (T2DM) may result in increased susceptibility to myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. IR injuries in multiple organs involves ferroptosis. Recently, the clock gene Rev-erbα has aroused considerable interest as a novel therapeutic target for metabolic and ischemic heart diseases. Herein, we investigated the roles of Rev-erbα and ferroptosis in myocardial IR injury during T2DM and its potential mechanisms. A T2DM model, myocardial IR and a tissue-specific Rev-erbα-/- mouse in vivo were established, and a high-fat high glucose environment with hypoxia-reoxygenation (HFHG/HR) in H9c2 were also performed. After myocardial IR, glycolipid profiles, creatine kinase-MB, AI, and the expression of Rev-erbα and ferroptosis-related proteins were increased in diabetic rats with impaired cardiac function compared to non-diabetic rats, regardless of the time at which IR was induced. The ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 decreased AI in diabetic rats given IR and LPO levels in cells treated with HFHG/HR, as well as the expression of Rev-erbα and ACSL4. The ferroptosis inducer erastin increased AI and LPO levels and ACSL4 expression. Treatment with the circadian regulator nobiletin and genetically targeting Rev-erbα via siRNA or CRISPR/Cas9 technology both protected against severe myocardial injury and decreased Rev-erbα and ACSL4 expression, compared to the respective controls. Taken together, these data suggest that ferroptosis is involved in the susceptibility to myocardial IR injury during T2DM, and that targeting Rev-erbα could alleviate myocardial IR injury by inhibiting ferroptosis.

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) formula granules are highly praised for the advanced, convenient, and modern use of Chinese medicinal materials. The safety of TCM formula granules has long been a concern of regulatory authorities and the medical industry. A multi-center, prospective, open, non-interventional, and centralized monitoring was carried out for the patients treated with TCM formula granules in 252 medical institutions from February 5, 2020 to April 19, 2022. All the case data and the incidence of adverse drug reactions/events were recorded. This study evaluated the safety of TCM formula granules, aiming to provide a reference for the clinically use. A total of 20 547 patients were included in this study. Four adverse events were recorded, including 3 adverse drug reactions with an adverse drug reaction rate of 0.015%, all of which occurred in the digestive system. There was no serious adverse event, and no factors related to adverse drug reactions/events were identified. The incidence of adverse drug reactions/events associated with China Resources Sanjiu Medical & Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. TCM formula granules was rare, which proved their safety in clinical use. A comprehensive data mining and objective analysis was carried out for the medicines with high frequency in TCM formula granules, the commonly used medicine pairs and combinations, and departmental medication. The drug use characteristics, prescription rules, and departmental use of TCM formula granules were summarized, which can shed light on the prescription compatibility and clinical application.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Exposure to heavy metals has been widely recognized as a risk factor for human health. However, there is limited information on the effects of blood heavy metals on gallstones. This study aims to investigate the relationship between blood heavy metals and gallstones using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: 7192 participants aged 20 years or older with complete information were included in the study. Serum concentrations of heavy metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma kinetic reaction cell mass spectrometry. Gallstones were presented by standard questionnaires. Logistic regression, nonlinear, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses were used to estimate the association between blood heavy metals and gallstones. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression showed that the highest quintile of blood selenium (Se) was associated with a higher risk of gallstones compared with the lowest quintile (OR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.16-2.36), particularly in individuals who were under 65 years of age, females, non-Hispanic Whites, non-drinkers, obese, and had a college education or higher. There was no correlation between blood cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and gallstones in the total population. Restricted cubic spline curves showed that a negative correlation was observed between blood Cd (OR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.710-1.00), Hg (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.78-0.97) and gallstones when Cd < 0.302 µg/L and Hg < 3.160 µg/L. CONCLUSIONS: Blood Se was an independent risk factor for gallstones, particularly in individuals under 65 years old, females, non-Hispanic Whites, non-drinkers, obese, and had a college education or higher. Furthermore, blood Cd and Hg were associated with a reduced risk of gallstones within a certain range.

Hypertrophic scar (HS) is an unfavorable skin disorder that typically develops after trauma, burn injury, or surgical procedures and causes numerous physical and psychological issues in patients. Currently, intralesional multi-injection of corticosteroid, particularly compound betamethasone (CB), is one of the most prevalent treatments for HS. However, injection administration could result in severe pain and dose-related side effects. Additionally, the vacuum therapeutic efficacy of this treatment relies on the level of expertise of the healthcare professional. To overcome the limitations of conventional injections, a new method that is convenient, painless, and self-administrable is urgently required. In this study, we developed a methacrylate gelatin (GelMA)/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) double-network hydrogel microneedle patch loaded with CB (CB-HMNP) as an intradermal delivery system for HS treatment. The double-network structure conferred the CB-HMNP with sufficient mechanical properties to successfully penetrate scar tissue while also helping to regulate the drug's sustained release rate. Subsequently, we confirmed that the CB-HMNP had a pronounced inhibitory effect on human HS fibroblasts (hHSFs), whereas drug-free HMNPs had no effect on hHSFs, indicating its high biocompatibility. In order to assess the therapeutic efficacy of CB-HMNPs, HS models of New Zealand rabbit ears were developed. The administration of CB-HMNP three times significantly decreased the scar elevation index (SEI), collagen I/III, and transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) protein. Therefore, the CB-HMNP may offer an administration pathway for the treatment of HS that is less painful, more convenient, less invasive, and sustain-released.

PURPOSE: This large-scale, multicenter, retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological and molecular profiles associated with programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in precancerous lesions and invasive adenocarcinoma in subcentimeter pulmonary nodules. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with histologically confirmed atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH), adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA), and invasive adenocarcinoma (ADC) were included. PD-L1 expression was evaluated at each center using a PD-L1 immunohistochemistry 22C3 pharmDx kit (Agilent, Santa Clara, CA, USA). The tumor proportion score (TPS) cutoff values were set at ≥ 1% and ≥ 50%. RESULTS: A total of 2022 nodules from 1844 patients were analyzed. Of these, 9 (0.45%) nodules had PD-L1 TPS ≥ 50%, 187 (9.25%) had PD-L1 TPS 1-49%, and 1826 (90.30%) had PD-L1 TPS < 1%. A total of 378 (18.69%), 1016 (50.25%), and 628 (31.06%) nodules were diagnosed as AAH/AIS, MIA, and ADC, respectively, by pathology. A total of 1377 (68.10%), 591 (25.67%), and 54 (2.67%) nodules were diagnosed as pure ground-glass opacity (GGO), mixed GGO, and solid nodules, respectively, by computed tomography. There was a significant difference between PD-L1 expression and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) mutation status (P < 0.001). PD-L1 expression levels were significantly different from those determined using the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) grading system (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: PD-L1 expression was significantly associated with radiological and pathological invasiveness and driver mutation status in subcentimeter pulmonary nodules. The significance of PD-L1 expression in the evolution of early-stage lung adenocarcinoma requires further investigation.
