PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to observe the influence of differential nutritional status on bone age (BA) change according to body mass index (BMI) and analyze the risk of advanced bone age in children with overweight and obesity. METHODS: In total 23,305 children from Beijing were included in this cross-sectional study. Childhood overweight and obesity were defined according to the China and World Health Organization growth criteria. The data were analyzed by the R coding platform version 4.3.0. RESULTS: Under the Chinese criteria, 29%, 15%, and 4% of boys with overweight; 33%, 33%, and 3% of boys with obesity; 39%, 25%, and 2% of girls with overweight; and 37%, 42% and 1% of girls with obesity had advanced, significantly advanced and delayed BA, respectively. After adjustment, overweight (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval, P under the Chinese criteria: 2.52, 2.30-2.75, <0.001 and 4.54, 4.06-5.09, <0.001) and obesity (4.31, 3.85-4.82, <0.001 and 14.01, 12.39-15.85, <0.001) were risk factors for both advanced BA and significantly advanced BA. CONCLUSIONS: Different nutritional statuses lead to differences in children's BA development. Children with overweight and obesity have higher rates of advanced BA under two growth criteria, and girls have more advances in BA than boys do. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for advanced BA.

Currently, the development of nonmetallic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts based on heteroatomic-doped carbon materials is receiving increaseing attention in the field of fuel cells. Here, we used enzymolytic lignin (EL), melamine, and thiourea as carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur sources and NH4Cl as an activator to prepare N- and S-codoped lignin-based polyporous carbon (ELC) by one-step pyrolysis. The prepared lignin-derived biocarbon material (ELC-1-900) possessed a high specific surface area (844 m2 g-1), abundant mesoporous structure, and a large pore volume (0.587 cm3 g-1). The XPS results showed that ELC-1-900 was successfully doped with N and S. ELC-1-900 exhibited extremely high activity and stability in alkaline media for the ORR, with a half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.88 V) and starting potential (Eonset = 0.98 V) superior to those of Pt/C catalysts and most non-noble-metal catalysts reported in recent studies. In addition, ELC-1-900 showed better ORR stability and methanol tolerance in alkaline media than commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Lignin is an ideal carbon source material, and lignin-based carbon materials have been widely used in electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and other fields. To investigate the effects of different lignin sources on the performance of electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, different lignin-based nitrogen-doped porous carbon catalysts were prepared using enzymolytic lignin (EL), alkaline lignin (AL) and dealkaline lignin (DL) as carbon sources and melamine as a nitrogen source. The surface functional groups and thermal degradation properties of the three lignin samples were characterized, and the specific surface area, pore distribution, crystal structure, defect degree, N content, and configuration of the prepared carbon-based catalysts were also analyzed. The electrocatalytic results showed that the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction performance of the three lignin-based carbon catalysts was different, and the catalytic performance of N-DLC was poor, while the electrocatalytic performance of N-ELC was similar to that of N-ALC, both of which were excellent. The half-wave potential (E1/2) of N-ELC was 0.82 V, reaching more than 95% of the catalytic performance of commercial Pt/C (E1/2 = 0.86 V) and proving that EL can be used as an excellent carbon-based electrocatalyst material, similar to AL.

Metformin has potential anti-inflammatory properties and accelerates wound healing by enhancing vascular development. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of metformin on pulmonary vascular development and the underlying mechanism. Newborn mice were subcutaneously injected with metformin from day 2 after exposure to hyperoxia. Pulmonary vascular development, inflammation, and Shh signaling pathway-related protein expression were evaluated by western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. M2 macrophage polarization was measured by flow cytometry. The effect of metformin on macrophage polarization was determined using RAW264.7 macrophages exposed to 90% oxygen in vitro. The role of metformin and purmorphamine on M1 and M2 polarization was observed by flow cytometry. M2 polarization of pulmonary macrophages was inhibited after hyperoxic exposure, and metformin increased the number of M2 macrophages in the lung on postnatal day 14. Metformin upregulated CD31 expression and suppressed inflammation in the lung of mice exposed to hyperoxia on postnatal days 7 and 14. Metformin downregulated the Gli1 expression in macrophages in the lung after exposure to hyperoxia on postnatal day 14. In vitro studies showed that metformin inhibited the Gli1 expression in RAW264.7 macrophages exposed to 90% oxygen, which was reversed after purmorphamine pretreatment. Exposure to 90% oxygen inhibited the polarization of M2 macrophages, whereas metformin increased the number of M2 macrophages. Purmorphamine reversed the effects of metformin on M2 polarization and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) upregulation in RAW264.7 macrophages exposed to hyperoxia. In conclusion, metformin regulates macrophage polarization via the Shh signaling pathway to improve pulmonary vascular development in bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

In 2020, China announced the "emission peak, carbon neutrality" policy, that is, China aims to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. The scenario of carbon neutrality will be significantly distinguished from the scenario we experienced since the industrial revolution. However, instrumental data are unavailable in the future carbon-neutral scenario. Earth system models and climate dynamics theory are needed to comprehend and project the climate change. In this paper, we illustrate our perspective of the issues related to "emission peak, carbon neutrality", including climate dynamics, climate-carbon feedback, interaction between China and global climate and carbon emissions and solutions, etc. We highlight that climate change has profoundly affected human production and life. The frequent occurrence of extreme weather disasters in recent years, together with the impact of epidemics, make the future "carbon peak & carbon-neutral" scenario more complex. There is whopping uncertainty but also a massive challenge to the scientific community. Thus, carbon neutrality is closely related to domestic production and lives, and there is little time left for planning. We believe that we will make a breakthrough in climate dynamics in the context of carbon neutrality with our joint efforts, which will serve our country's carbon emission policy at different stages.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that approximately 10% of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients die within a year of disease onset, and that age is an independent predictor. However, no predictive model has been developed. We aimed to establish novel prognostic models to predict the 1-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) of young, middle-aged, and older patients with NPC after radiotherapy. METHODS: The data of 2822 NPC patients who underwent radiotherapy between 2004 and 2015 were reviewed from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database. We divided them into young, middle-aged, and older people groups according to age (< 44 years, 45-59 years, and ≥ 60 years, respectively). Multivariate analyses were performed, and prognostic models were constructed. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses indicated that age, ethnicity, histological subtype, T, and M stage were independent predictors of 1-year CSS in the older people group. In contrast, ethnicity and age were not found to have predictive value in the young and middle-aged groups, respectively. Accordingly, three prognostic models with excellent predictive values were established for the three groups (C-indices: 0.791 [95% CI 0.722-0.859], 0.763 [95% CI 0.721-0.806] and 0.723 [95% CI 0.683-0.763], respectively). These predictive values are higher than those of the eighth edition American joint committee cancer tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) classification system. CONCLUSION: Three prognostic models for predicting the 1-year CSS of young, middle-aged, and older NPC patients after radiotherapy showed better predictive power than the TNM classification system. These models may guide treatment strategies and clinical decision-making in different cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: The immune inflammation-based score is recognized as a prognostic marker for cancer. However, the most accurate prognostic marker for patients with gastric cancer remains undetermined. We aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio for outcomes in gastric cancer patients after radical gastrectomy. METHODS: A total of 607 gastric cancer patients treated at three Chinese institutions were included. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated, and the areas under the curve were calculated to compare the predictive value among the inflammation-based score, lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio, C-reactive protein/albumin and neutrophil-lymphocyte, platelet-lymphocyte and lymphocyte-monocyte ratios. Cox regression was performed to determine the prognostic factors for overall survival. RESULTS: The median follow-up time was 63 months (range: 1-84 months). The optimal cut-off value for lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio was 0.63. The patients were divided into the LCR <0.63 (LLCR, n = 294) group and the LCR ≥0.63 (HLCR, n = 313) group. LLCR was significantly correlated with poor clinical characteristics. Compared with inflammation-based score, lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio had the highest areas under the curve (0.695). Patients with LLCR experienced more post-operative complications than the HLCR group (20.4 vs. 12.1%, P = 0.006). Multivariate analysis showed that a higher lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (HR: 0.545, 95%CI: 0.372-0.799, P = 0.002) was associated with better overall survival. The HLCR group had higher 5-year overall survival rate than the LLCR group (80.5 vs. 54.9%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio levels can effectively predict the short-term and oncological efficacy of gastric cancer patients after radical gastrectomy with a predictive value significantly better than other inflammation-based score.

Despite a globally uniform increase in the concentrations of emitted greenhouse gases, radiatively forced surface warming can have significant spatial variations. These define warming patterns that depend on preexisting climate states and through atmospheric and oceanic dynamics can drive changes of the hydrological cycle with global-scale feedbacks. Our study reviews research progress on the hydrological cycle changes and their effects on multiscale climate variability. Overall, interannual variability is expected to become stronger in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and weaker in the Atlantic. Global monsoon rainfall is projected to increase and the wet season to lengthen despite a slowdown of atmospheric circulation. Strong variations among monsoon regions are likely to emerge, depending on surface conditions such as orography and land-sea contrast. Interdecadal climate variability is expected to modulate the globally averaged surface temperature change with pronounced anomalies in the polar and equatorial regions, leading to prolonged periods of enhanced or reduced warming. It is emphasized that advanced global observations, regional simulations, and process-level investigations are essential for improvements in understanding, predicting, and projecting the modes of climate variability, monsoon sensitivity, and energetic fluctuations in a warming climate.

BACKGROUND: Whether or not EGFR mutation status detected by ddPCR in plasma predicts the effect of icotinib on patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma was determined. METHODS: Plasma and matched tissue specimens from patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma were collected prior to icotinib treatment. The ARMS method was used to detect EGFR mutation status in DNA extracted from tissue specimens, while the EGFR mutation status in ctDNA extracted from plasma specimens was determined by ddPCR. The therapeutic effects of icotinib were compared between patients with EGFR-activating mutations detected by ddPCR in ctDNA and ARMS in tissue DNA. RESULTS: EGFR mutation status was detected in 96 tissue and 100 plasma specimens. The sensitivity and positive predictive value of 19del detected in ctDNA by ddPCR was 70.97% (22/31) and 44.90% (22/49), respectively. The positive predictive value was 84.62% (22/26) and the sensitivity was 53.66% (22/41) for the L858R mutation. For the common sensitive EGFR mutations, ddPCR had a positive predictive value of 77.19% (44/57) and a sensitivity of 48.89% (44/90). Patients with sensitive EGFR mutations in ctDNA had objective response and disease control rates (DCR) similar to patients who had sensitive EGFR mutations in tissues detected by ARMS when treated with icotinib (57.14% vs. 51.51% and 92.86% vs. 90.91%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with sensitive EGFR mutations in plasma specimens detected with ddPCR had a higher ORR and DCR compared with patients with sensitive EGFR mutations in tissue detected with the ARMS method.

Small intestinal metastases from primary lung cancer are rare. Such patients have a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis of small intestinal metastases is difficult because of the low incidence of clinically apparent symptoms. The standard treatment for small intestinal metastases has not been established. A 69-year-old Chinese man presented for evaluation of a tumor in the right lower lung and mediastinal lymph node enlargement on clinical examination. The clinical stage was cT2N2M0 (stage IIIA). Histologic examination of the tumor revealed lung adenocarcinoma. He could not tolerate surgery; hence, he received two chemotherapy regimens. However, the disease progressed. He had bloating after chemotherapy and decreased flatus. An abdominal CT scan showed an intestinal effusion with local intestinal obstruction. Medical treatment was ineffective; hence, he underwent a diagnostic laparoscopy. The pathologic evaluation suggested an intestinal metastatic adenocarcinoma from the primary lung cancer. Based on an real-time PCR assay, the tumor had a ROS1 fusion and responded well to crizotinib. The progression-free survival was 7 months. Physicians must be aware of the possibility of intestinal metastases from primary lung cancer. With an accurate diagnosis and thorough evaluation, patients may benefit from targeted therapy.

The Paris Agreement proposed a goal of "pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels". The Community Earth System Model, version 1, with the Community Atmosphere Model, version 5 (CESM1-CAM5), designed a set of experiments that fulfilled the 1.5 °C warming goal. By analyzing the outputs, this study aims to present projections associated with warming in South China (SC). Interestingly, if the global mean temperature (GMT) overshoots to 1.7 °C above the pre-industrial levels in 2050 and back to 1.5 °C by 2100, additional warming in the SC mid-summer will occur when approaching 2100 compared to that in the scenario under which the GMT stabilizes at an increase of 1.5 °C after the mid-2040 s. In the final 1 to 3 decades of 21st century in most parts of SC, the multi-year mean warming differences, as well as the difference of extreme hot days, between the two scenarios are significant among the ensembles in mid-summer. Under the scenario in which the GMT overshoots an increase of 1.5 °C, the decrease of mid-level clouds leads to increased downwards solar radiation in the SC and warms the surface, resulting in increases in both outgoing longwave radiation and latent heat flux into the atmosphere and maintenance of the surface balance of the heat budget.

Liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP, FABP1) is a highly conserved key factor in lipid metabolism. This study was undertaken to verify whether the T94A mutation in the L-FABP gene affects fatty acid uptake and intracellular esterification into specific lipid pools. Candidate SNPs were recreated using site-directed mutagenesis and tested for physical function in stably transfected Chang liver cell lines. We found that the T94A mutant of L-FABP lowered FFA uptake but had no effect on FFA efflux. L-FABP T94A-expressing cells showed decreased triglyceride content and increased cholesterol accumulation compared to the wild-type control for cells incubated with an FFA mixture (oleate: palmitate, 2:1 ratio). In conclusion, our study provided additional indications of the functional relevance of the L-FABP T94A SNP in hepatic fatty acid and lipid metabolism in humans.
