RESUMO

Notions of nonstabilizerness, or "magic," quantify how nonclassical quantum states are in a precise sense: states exhibiting low nonstabilizerness preclude quantum advantage. We introduce "pseudomagic" ensembles of quantum states that, despite low nonstabilizerness, are computationally indistinguishable from those with high nonstabilizerness. Previously, such computational indistinguishability has been studied with respect to entanglement, introducing the concept of pseudoentanglement. However, we demonstrate that pseudomagic neither follows from pseudoentanglement nor implies it. In terms of applications, the study of pseudomagic offers fresh insights into the theory of quantum scrambling: it uncovers states that, even though they originate from nonscrambling unitaries, remain indistinguishable from scrambled states to any physical observer. Additional applications include new lower bounds on state synthesis problems, property testing protocols, and implications for quantum cryptography. Our Letter is driven by the observation that only quantities measurable by a computationally bounded observer-intrinsically limited by finite-time computational constraints-hold physical significance. Ultimately, our findings suggest that nonstabilizerness is a "hide-able" characteristic of quantum states: some states are much more magical than is apparent to a computationally bounded observer.

PURPOSE: Investigate components of care for rotator cuff related shoulder pain in workers' compensation in relation to claim outcomes (claim duration, total medical spend, total claim cost, return to work outcome). METHODS: Engagement with (had care, time to care) four components of care (prescribed exercise, imaging, injections, surgery) were obtained from auditing 189 closed workers' compensation files. Associations were analysed between components of care and claim outcomes. RESULTS: 80% received prescribed exercise, 81% imaging, 42% injection and 35% surgery. Median time to imaging (11 days) was shorter than the prescribed exercise (27 days), with injection at 38 days and surgery 118.5 days. With univariable regression analysis higher age, the involvement of legal representation and the presence of rotator cuff pathology from diagnostic imaging (partial thickness tear or full thickness tear) were all associated with increased claim duration, total medical spend, total claim cost and less successful return to work outcomes. After adjusting for these three associations, having an injection or surgery were both positively associated with longer claim duration and greater medical spend, and surgery with greater total claim costs. In general, longer time to receiving components of care was associated with increased claim duration and reduced odds of returning to full duties at work. CONCLUSION: Early management was not consistent with clinical guidelines for managing workers' compensation rotator cuff related shoulder pain. This may negatively affect claims outcomes.

The Petz recovery channel plays an important role in quantum information science as an operation that approximately reverses the effect of a quantum channel. The pretty good measurement is a special case of the Petz recovery channel, and it allows for near-optimal state discrimination. A hurdle to the experimental realization of these vaunted theoretical tools is the lack of a systematic and efficient method to implement them. This Letter sets out to rectify this lack: Using the recently developed tools of quantum singular value transformation and oblivious amplitude amplification, we provide a quantum algorithm to implement the Petz recovery channel when given the ability to perform the channel that one wishes to reverse. Moreover, we prove that, in some sense, our quantum algorithm's usage of the channel implementation cannot be improved by more than a quadratic factor. Our quantum algorithm also provides a procedure to perform pretty good measurements when given multiple copies of the states that one is trying to distinguish.

Kleiber's law, or the 3/4 -power law scaling of the metabolic rate with body mass, is considered one of the few quantitative laws in biology, yet its physiological basis remains unknown. Here, we report Kleiber's law scaling in the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea. Its reversible and life history-independent changes in adult body mass over 3 orders of magnitude reveal that Kleiber's law does not emerge from the size-dependent decrease in cellular metabolic rate, but from a size-dependent increase in mass per cell. Through a combination of experiment and theoretical analysis of the organismal energy balance, we further show that the mass allometry is caused by body size dependent energy storage. Our results reveal the physiological origins of Kleiber's law in planarians and have general implications for understanding a fundamental scaling law in biology.
