RESUMO

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMOF) is a commonly used immunosuppressive prodrug in kidney transplant patients. However, it is not without side effects. The most common of these is diarrhea which inadvertently leads to colonoscopic and endoscopic evaluation when all other workup returns negative. Colonoscopies often show diffuse ulcers and colitis changes depending on the degree of diarrhea. In rare situations, MMOF-induced ischemic colitis may occur on gross endoscopy. We describe an unusual phenomenon of an adult male status post renal transplant with histopathologically diagnosed MMOF-induced colitis who developed gross endoscopic findings concerning ischemic colitis. Our case highlights the importance of recognizing that MMOF-induced colonic changes can rarely mimic ischemic colitis. With this in mind, we aim for gastroenterologists to better understand the varying endoscopic colonic findings of this immunosuppressive drug.

RESUMO

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was first reported in the early 1980s and a once untreatable and fatal disease has since allowed individuals to live healthy lives with the advent of novel antiviral medications. While the life expectancy of an HIV-positive individual has dramatically increased, a myriad of HIV-related complications such as pneumocystis pneumonia, candidiasis, renal disease, anxiety/depression, and cardiovascular disease have dramatically decreased. However, these patients are still prone to complex medical problems. In this case report, we aim to highlight a rare, complicated case of an HIV-positive patient with coronary artery aneurysms complicated by an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

RESUMO

Antennas are a vital component of the wireless body sensor networks devices. A wearable antenna in this system can be used as a communication component or energy harvester. This paper presents a detailed review to recent advances fabrication methods for flexible antennas. Such antennas, for any applications in wireless body sensor networks, have specific considerations such as flexibility, conformability, robustness, and ease of integration, as opposed to conventional antennas. In recent years, intriguing approaches have demonstrated antennas embroidered on fabrics, encapsulated in polymer composites, printed using inkjets on flexible laminates and a 3-D printer and, more interestingly, by injecting liquid metal in microchannels. This article presents an operational perspective of such advanced approaches and beyond, while analyzing the strengths and limitations of each in the microwave as well as millimeter-wave regions. Navigating through recent developments in each area, mechanical and electrical constitutive parameters are reviewed, and finally, some open challenges are presented as well for future research directions.

RESUMO

This paper presents a new planar feeding structure for wideband resonant-cavity antennas (RCAs). The feeding structure consists of two stacked dielectric slabs with an air-gap in between. A U-shaped slot, etched in the top metal-cladding over the upper dielectric slab, is fed by a planar stripline printed on the back side of the dielectric slab. The lower dielectric slab backed by a ground plane, is used to reduce back radiation. To validate the wideband performance of the new structure, in an RCA configuration, it was integrated with a wideband all-dielectric single-layer partially reflecting superstructure (PRS) with a transverse permittivity gradient (TPG). The single-layer RCA fed by the U-slot feeding structure demonstrated a peak directivity of 18.5 dBi with a 3 dB directivity bandwidth of 32%. An RCA prototype was fabricated and experimental results are presented.

RESUMO

Research on reducing the level of pesticide residue on a textile substrate has examined many variables under many different conditions. This study controlled fiber type and the use of prewash product in an examination of residue levels for a number of pesticides in different pesticide classes. For all pesticides examined, the use of prewash lowered pesticide residues regardless of fiber type. Differences in pesticide residue level attributable to fiber type were not consistent.
