RESUMO

Many insect pests, including the brown planthopper (BPH), undergo windborne migration that is challenging to observe and track. It remains controversial about their migration patterns and largely unknown regarding the underlying genetic basis. By analyzing 360 whole genomes from around the globe, we clarify the genetic sources of worldwide BPHs and illuminate a landscape of BPH migration showing that East Asian populations perform closed-circuit journeys between Indochina and the Far East, while populations of Malay Archipelago and South Asia undergo one-way migration to Indochina. We further find round-trip migration accelerates population differentiation, with highly diverged regions enriching in a gene desert chromosome that is simultaneously the speciation hotspot between BPH and related species. This study not only shows the power of applying genomic approaches to demystify the migration in windborne migrants but also enhances our understanding of how seasonal movements affect speciation and evolution in insects.

PURPOSE: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and the presence of T2DM tremendously drives NAFLD progression. The use of transient elastography (TE) for assessment of NAFLD has been increasing due to its high sensitivity and specificity. This study aimed to measure liver stiffness in patients with T2DM and ultrasonography (USG)-diagnosed NAFLD and assess the correlations between liver stiffness and other clinical and biochemical parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed 205 adult patients with T2DM and USG-diagnosed NAFLD who were being treated at a specialized endocrine private practice in Bangladesh. All subjects underwent TE for hepatic fibrosis assessment, which was performed using a FibroScan® 402 device. A fibrosis score ≥9.7 kilopascals (kPa) was used to define advanced fibrosis (≥F3). RESULTS: Out of 205 (65.9% female, mean age 45 ± 27 years, 67.3% obese) patients, the frequencies of Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 fatty liver on USG were 46.3%, 51.2%, and 2.4%, respectively. According to the TE results, 41 (20%) had advanced fibrosis (≥F3). Subjects with advanced fibrosis had a higher body mass index (BMI), higher levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and higher frequencies of individuals with elevated ALT and AST and advanced fatty liver grades on USG. The fibrosis score (kPa) was strongly and positively correlated with age, BMI, waist circumference, obesity, serum ALT and AST levels, and the fatty liver grade in USG; the AST:ALT ratio did not correlate with kPa. CONCLUSION: The data showed that 20% of the subjects with T2DM having NAFLD on USG exhibited advanced fibrosis, demonstrating the need for early diagnosis and treatment of NAFLD in T2DM. The use of TE with other serum markers can be helpful for the diagnosis of advanced fibrosis.

The sustainability of the ship recycling industry strongly linked with the global shipping market and international commodity flows. More than 80% of the End of Life (EoL) ships are dismantled in South Asian countries, namely Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. Due to measures taken to minimize the propagation of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), an international supply chain is broken to a historic low, except for certain medical-related urgencies. Due to the disruption of global supply chains, the industry may submerge into uncertainty due to, perhaps, lack of adequate labor force to dismantle increased EoL ships and due to disturbances of vessel transportation to the recycling nations amid strong precautionary measures. Our estimate suggests that about 300 million Gross Tonnage (GT) available for demolition in the next five years and the inability to get them recycled would cost about 20 billion dollars. More importantly, South Asian recycling nations would suffer from economic losses and employment opportunities. In this study, we also apply a scenario analysis technique to understand the impact range of COVID-19 in the short term and in the long term. The disruption is viewed through a circular economy framework, identifying a critical lack of 'global scale' acknowledgment in the circular economy framework. This article suggests that a formalized global scale, paralleled with favorable policies, may reduce supply chain disruption and improve sustainable development in the receiving nations.

The antibacterial potential of essential oils and methanol extracts of sweet basil Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae) was evaluated for controlling the growth range of food-borne pathogenic bacteria. Essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation from the leaves and stems were analyzed by GC-MS. Fifty-seven compounds representing 94.9 and 96.1% of the total leaf and stem oils, respectively, were identified, of which methyl chavicol (36.7 and 29.9%), gitoxigenin (9.3 and 10.2%), trimethoquinol (10.3 and 8.4%), beta-guaiene (3.7 and 4.1%), aciphyllene (3.4 and 3.0%), alizarin (3.2 and 4.4%), naphthaline (2.2 and 3.8%), (-)-caryophyllene (2.0 and 1.9%), and mequinol (1.6 and 1.8%) were the major compounds. The essential oils (10 microL/disc of 1:5, v/v dilution with methanol) and methanol extracts (300 microg/disc) of O. basilicum displayed a great potential of antibacterial activity against Bacillius cereus, B. subtilis, B. megaterium, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Shigella boydii, S. dysenteriae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. mimicus, and Salmonella typhi with their respective zones of inhibition of 11.2-21.1 mm and MIC values of 62.5-500 microg/mL. The results of this study suggest that the natural products derived from O. basilicum may have potential use in the food and/or pharmaceutical industries as antimicrobial agents.
